Maybe I bought a Honda, expecting an Acura?

I bought my 2014 Accord Coupe in the beginning of November and got a great deal on it. I went looking to buy a black 4-Door with black interior. Left with a white 2-Door and Tan Interior. Seen it and absolutely loved it. And I still do. It has almost 5,000 miles on it now. I regret buying a 2-door but, that's my fault. I had problems with the brakes sticking when I first got it, and I'm going in Friday to have the "shimmy" checked out, that I've had in it sense day 1. This is a great car with great mpg, but I feel the build quality isn't that great compared to my old 2005 Maxima that I had. Already have several rattles, and the electric steering now makes a quiet tick when turning left.

I bought mine in Nov 2016, with 22,000 miles. Put on 33,000 since. Outside of oil changes, I've replaced the air filter, cabin air filter, the battery recently and the OEM tires were dumped when I put on snow tires. I love how it drives and handles. The manual transmission is smooth. Gas mileage has been about what I expected though I just got my all time high of 37 mph earlier this week driving about 65 up to Vermont and back. Routinely getting 29-30, 20%highway, 80% local roads/small city roads. The bluetooth isn't always easy to set up but it works. And I've been able to add my daughter's phone w/o losing mine. Now for my concerns. My prior car was a 2003 Accord EX sedan. Which had better quality materials. Thicker carpeting. More secure interior parts so there were no tiny rattles. The inside sunroof cover (the one you move manually) was more substantial. This one feels like thin plastic. While I like the design of the coupe seats, the quality isn't as high as the 2003 sedan. The rear defrost is a little slower to get going. Speakers were better on the sedan. The tensioner belt on the driver's seatbelt is no longer tight. I've followed the style changes from 7th generation to 9th gen and I know that Honda use to put better materials into the EX 4 cylinder. Heck, the 7th generation 4 cyl EX-coupe had leather heated seats. Only the 6 cyl EX coupe has those now in the 8-9th generation. So I assume that Honda started to keep the higher end materials for the 6-cyl coupe so those buyers would feel like they were getting the best. But really, in an era when Hyundai throws in a lot of extras on their vehicles along with the 10 year/150,000 warranty, can't Honda do better? Please, Honda, stop relying so heavily on the reputation for reliablility and spend a little extra to improve the materials. It's sad that the coupe is no longer in the lineup. I'll be looking more closely at other cars next time around. One thing I want to point out: the seats are the most frequently complained about item on the Accords, sedans or coupes. Do a test drive that's an least an hour long and see how you feel after. That's what I did.

I have a 2014 EX-L Accord that 15 years ago would have been pure fantasy (esp,, the gas mileage, engine technology, etc). I just don't see where you can nit-pick too much an a car that was built with the minds of a likely very anal retentive group of designers. Here are a few sill examples: 1) On the shift handle, the button you depress initially felt kinda chintzy; however, over time you realize the lightness of design makes it just a little bit easier to depress - it almost floats. I think this design esthetic pervades the car. It seems like everything works very well. Oh, my one update is somewhat paradoxical. The Accord "feels" a little exposed (from the occupants viewpoints) and in heavy traffic you sense the surrounding traffic more than some other vehicles with less glass and thicker A/B pillars. However, it's this enhanced visibility that actually makes it a safer car to drive.

Its a Lemon by Honda Standards

Canadian Honda Accord Owner, 09/30/2021

Where can I start? My 2014 Honda Accord Coupe with 140,000 km has had its Starter replaced ($700), Rear Right bearing ($500) all below 65,000 km on the vehicle. Next the rear brakes have been replaced twice with rotors to the tune of $1200 total, the calipers still need replacing ($900) and now the A/C Compressor unit needs replacing ($1500) (if honda did it it would be ($>2,200). The cost of parts and labour at the low mileage of the vehicle makes it a lemon in my books. I have owned Accords previously and this will be my last Honda product.

Long-term Ownership Review

Luke, 03/17/2019
2014 Honda Accord EX-L 2dr Coupe w/Navigation (2.4L 4cyl CVT)

I purchased my CPO Accord Coupe in 2015 with 28k and it now has 116k, so I know this model well. I'll list the pros then the cons of this car from my experience. Most people who buy Accords place value, safety, fuel economy, and reliability as their top priorities when searching for a car and I'm pleased to say this vehicle excels at those criteria. I haven't had a serious problem occur since I've owned it which has been very nice having come from a 15 year old Mercedes S-Class. My favorite aspects about the car is its objectively good looks, the quality of the paint and exterior trim, and the seat comfort (front/back). As for the driving experience, it about what you'd expect in this segment. The 2.4 is quite smooth and as other have said it feels like it makes more power than Honda's stats suggest. The ride is smooth (especially with Michelins) and the steering is nicely weighted for having an electric power steering system; however, if sporty driving dynamics is what you're after, get the manual. The CVT simply doesn't have a nice feel to it and the droning sound it produces from maintaining revs is also less than satisfying. In fairness, my non-car guy friends and family don't notice it. Aside from the CVT I have two other gripes, and they're pretty big ones in my opinion. The first is the interior quality of the Coupe specifically. The back seat area is surrounded by yards of hard black plastic that's reminiscent of a mid-2000's Chrysler product. There's always a rattle coming from back there, if it's not from one spot it's from another, and sometimes its from multiple spots at once. Also, the seats themselves aren't real leather in the Coupe, just a leatherette that poorly simulates real leather. My other gripe is with the brakes. My brake rotors have gone 10,000 miles at most before having to be resurfaced. They warp which causes the brakes to pulsate. I'm not hard on my brakes, so I consider this to be unacceptable. No other car I've had has had this issue. Otherwise I've just had to do normal maintenance. Though not perfect, this is a good car overall that will mostly please anyone looking for a car in this segment. I hope this review helps in your purchase decision. :)
