A good car that stills need improvement.

This is the 4th Taurus I've owned, though may be the last unless some improvements are made in the base power and noise level Not as nice as the '93 LX I owned but much quieter than the '97 (sold after 2 weeks because of unbearable road and engine noise). A very sporty feel and tight suspension makes it a fun car to drive with a feeling of safety and comfort. Car has a cozy yet sporty feel. The 155hp Vulcan engine is underpowered, but does get you moving and is "adequate." (I've tested the 200hp Duratec engine which is like a rocket.) Paid $3300 from a dealer, and I consider it a very good deal. But would not buy another one without improvments.

I posted a review 8/29/2006 on this car when I was 16. I am now 18 and have recently wrecked my precious Taurus. I was turning down my street comming home from school and spilled my soda, I over compensated and hit a brick culvert in a diitch, at a pretty good speed. I was shocked when I wedged the door open. I couldn't believe I came out without a scratch. The car is so safe. My grandfather came to me with a tractor and rope, we didn't need it. I turned the key and it started like a new one, I drove it home, still drove straight and true. I fixed it myself. You can't even tell. This car is so safe. When it's washed, it's the best lookin' car on the block!

Low score on reliability

Shortly after purchase, I found the A/C barely functioned on a trip from CA to AZ. Spent part of my vacation taking care of this problem. On another trip, eng coolant light kept coming on. Turned out to be a sensor, but I lost travel time checking it out and it took the dealership 1 1/2 days to fix. On a recent trip to Las Vegas, a/c was making a terrible noise. L.V. dealership said it was O.K. to drive back to CA, but local dealership said this was bad advice because a/c was "coming apart" and parts could have gotten in my engine. Took them 4 days to pretty much rebuild the a/c.

What is all the fuss about?

Bought this car new because of the less than invoice 'ad' in the paper. Car has been great except resale. Now has 49k and no repairs, just keeps purring along. Only complaint is engine pings in winter. Maybe because it is an LX, I have no options that can go wrong.

Underrated Car for the masses

My Duratec 24V engine Taurus has been utterly reliable. I've covered 39,000 miles since 11/02. I service it myself and use synthetic oil and high quality filters, which I change every 10K miles. I got a repair shop to change the serpentine belt, changed brake fluid and auto-fluid too. This helps maintain the car's life and reliability I feel. Regarding performance, only use the overdrive 4th gear on freeways, stick to the 3 speed around town, gas mileage will improve as the box is not hunting up and down all the time. Great road holding and comfort. Seats are hard, but good for my back and there is oceans of space inside. Controls are easy to use. Brakes are appalling, as is wind noise.
