Beware of the Good Looks.
I rented this car for a week and can't figure out who would buy one. We wanted a vehicle that could comfortably seat 4 people and 2 children in car seats. We could not install the car seats and have access to the rear seat. The middle seat does not slide. Rear seat too small to hold car seats. My 6'4" son had to crawl in thru the liftgate. My Ford Touch System - Overly Complex. Transmission had a constant wine. Turn signals needed to be pushed 2 clicks up or down to stay on. Large Turning radius made parking a chore. I own a Mazda CX9 - this SUV can't compete with it. Check out and drive the competition before you buy this. Beauty is only skin deep.
Worst car I have owned!!
I bought my 2013 Ford Explorer Ltd. used and I should not have rushed with the buy. We needed to get a car bought before the first of the year and were literally on our way for Christmas vacation, so needed to get it done! Found my car, test drove it and decided it was the one. All the other Explorers we were looking at had sold by the time we got to the places. Bought it, did a CarFax on it and went on our vacation. Within a week of getting home, there was a horrible noise in the front end. Took it to my FORD DEALERSHIP to get it inspected. The struts were shot! Not disclosed by the company I bought it from. Paid Ford, over $800 to replace. .. ok, a small bump in the road. Drove it for another week, and the sound was back. Took it to another mechanic that we use often. Struts were broken. Replaced them again. Over the course of 6 months, we had to replace the struts 4 times! Ford did not seem to care that their parts were defective and acknowledged that it WAS defective struts. On the 5th try, we apparently got good struts. Another 3 months and a loud banging started in the front end. Sway bar busted. Another $2,000. Got that fixed and now, my radiator has split and upon examining the engine, it appears that all the belts, hoses and everything pretty much under the hood, needs to be replaced. I have had the car for less than a year!! OH and the rear wheels cracked! That cost me another $400. How the hell do you check for that when buying a used car?! This car had under 60,000 miles when I bought it!! OH.. and the A Panel, flew off half way to Memphis! Just flew off at 70 miles an hour. That cost another $300. and a tree dinked the rear panel above the brake lights. Because of the way the car was designed, they would have to remove the window to replace it. So that was gonna cost another $800!!!! Ridiculous!! The car design SUCKS! Just when I was ready to accept that somethings on the exterior were going to fail, but the engine was strong, now that is failing!!! Bout done with Ford, which is all I have ever owned!

Love it but check that middle row for rattles
Love the explorer and would give it 5/5 if not for just one very annoying problem. The middle row passenger side seat vibrates and rattles. Every bump or rough road provides an irritating rattle. Headed back to the dealer for a second try at a repair. I found the suggestion to put something heavy in the seat funny but disturbing.
What else can go wrong???
I bought my 2013 explorer with 20,000 miles and 2 years old. The dealer talked me into the maintenance package. In January 2016 I took vehicle for first oil change pointing out surface rust to service guy( was he unaware of 3 yr. corrosion warranty). I was. Then at 77,000 miles front end got LOUD!!! Hub bearings shot-----1,000 dollars. Then vehicle would die while driving----throttle body bad, 275 dollars. Now at 110,000 miles front end is LOUD AGAIN----moog bearings are going bad---3 year/36,000 miles. Add to this the Michelin Premier(1,000 dollars) tires that I nearly got 40,000 miles out of. I drive like an old lady---ask my 78 year old mother. First and LAST ford!!!!

Junk Wheels
The plastic coating started to let go with 37,000. I had purchased the extended 4/48 warranty. But when I took it into the local Ford dealer was told that it covered everything but the wheels. Also the edge of the hood is bubbling. Was told that the hood is allumium so its not corrosion. The paint is just letting go. This is a major problem that Ford has with this year Explorer. They are all doing it. Should be a recall.
