Used 2001 Ford Escape XLS 2WD 4dr SUV (2.0L 4cyl 5M) Consumer Reviews

Coolant light too closely resembles battery light. Gear shifter gets in the way of changing the radio...that's about it!
Starting to show its age/
We've got 33K miles now and things are starting to go wrong. The driver's door is sticking, the car stalled at 45 mph and it's getting harder to start in cold weather. Overall it's a good vehicle, but I wouldn't get the V-4. Stick with the V-6 and don't pay more than $22,000.

Bought v6 in April 01, Paid the 1st visit to the service dept for a check engine light by Aug '01. This started a series of diff lights coming on at diff times and many visits to the dealership-(thank goodness for warranty). Each time I'd take it in and they'd fix a light of the month but no guar it would be "fixed". 27,0000 miles later and 10x to the dealership in 2 yrs was all I could handle. After it being in the shop 8, 9, 11 '03 I traded it in and got a Nissan. The less than reassuring attitude from the Service Dept and Ford left me no choice but to find a reliable means of transportation for my family.
Problems
With 47555 miles, the V6 4WD has lost the torque converter says the dealer. Also the sun roof quit working and the dealer quoted over $1600 to fix it because the factory sun roof is the only option available. The left front wheel bearing is gone and the front right idler arm needs replaced. Seems too soon for these types of failures for a SUV that has never been off road and used on the freeway mostly.

really enjoy vehicle overall. power is a bit weak with 4 cyl, not a good trade off but saved $$$$ over purchase price. very comfortable for adults in front & back. now have 40k miles runs great and still tight. great value
