The car is a “Plug-in Hybrid”. The “Plug-In” part is a pure electric car. It needs to be “plugged-in” to an electric power source to charge its battery. This battery is used to power an electric motor to drive the car. Electric only vehicles are typically called “EVs” and I will use EV to refer to the car in electric-only mode. Separate from the EV, C-Max Energi is a “Hybrid” car. The Hybrid is a car with a normal gasoline engine, but also uses the engine to charge a battery, which powers an electric motor to either drive the car on its own or supplements the gasoline engine to drive the car. This improves gas mileage, especially in stop-and-go city driving. The battery for the EV part of the C-Max Energi is good for about 20 miles on a full charge and 550-mile range on a full tank/charge. Prior to getting this car, I had rented several Toyota Prius models and drove them for months. They have many plusses: first, they have been on the market for over 10 years so all the kinks have been worked out; next, they have 50+ MPG gas mileage and even higher in stop-and-go city driving. Also, there are probably 15 variations of Prius to choose from. And Toyotas have legendary reliability. So, why did I go for the C-Max, a Ford, an American car? The two minuses compared to the Prius are it has lower gas mileage - 45 MPG in my first two tanks of gas - and the reliability is unknown – the model has been available for about five years. Consumer reports has the C-Max 5-10% below the Prius in reliability. But, I felt the pluses where many. Listing them quickly: • It’s much quieter - insulation from road noise and a longer wheelbase and larger wheels means it rides smoother/quieter. • Better acceleration - while the engine is 2.0L vs. the Prius 1.8L, the C-Max is heavier cancelling out the larger engine advantage. But the C-Max combines electric and gas power when you want to accelerate, so getting on the highway quickly is no problem. • Roomier and higher - for such a small frame, its very roomy inside because it’s tall so getting in and out is easy. • Lower cost - because it’s an EV, there are a number of government incentives (below) that lower the cost. To sum up my view, the C-Max Energi has many plusses and only two minuses, which I can live with. And I’m buying American (paperwork with the car says it’s about 55% US, with the rest from Japan, Mexico and elsewhere) EVs qualify for up to a US$7,500 federal government tax credit and the C-Max Energi qualifies for a $4,007. It also qualifies for $1,500 rebate from California. These incentives make the car much less expensive and pushed me to get the plug-in hybrid instead of a normal hybrid. Combined with incentives from Ford, the price was very attractive and pushed me to get a C-Max Energi vs. the Prius. After being shown the numbers, there was no way I was not going to lease. Before I go into the numbers in the lease, let me describe the incentives (or discounts) from Ford that totaled $12,000: ⁃ $4000 tax credit for an EV. If I bought the car, I would be able to reduce my federal taxes by $4000. However, if I leased the car and Ford still owned it, Ford would take the tax credit and give me an immediate $4000 discount. ⁃ $4000 factory incentives - this was a $4000 standard discount that Ford had provided all year. ⁃ $2500 year-end incentives - combined with a few other programs, I get another $2500 off. ⁃ $1500 lease incentive - this one I don’t really understand. If I bought the car outright, I would get all of the above. If I leased the car, I would get $1500 more. The 2016 C-Max Energy had a sticker price of $34,000. Add to it about $2,000 of taxes and fees and subtract the $12,000 in incentives, right off the bat, the car is costing me $24,000. (34,000+2,000-12,000 = $24,000). $24,000 is the amount I am financing with lease. Then Ford took the $12,000 less the $2,000 tax and expense and used the remaining $10,000 as a down payment for the lease. So I had to put no money down. I drove off with the car, and except for paying for insurance, did not pay a dime. I looked at the monthly payments and the residual value, (the amount I would have to pay if I decided to keep the car at the end of the term for lease) for a lease of 24 months, 36 months and 48 months. It was clear that the 36- month lease was the lowest cost. The numbers are: ⁃ Price of the car: $24,000 ⁃ Deduct the end of three years’ residual value provided by Ford: $12,500 ⁃ My 36 payments, including interest: $12,000 ⁃ Tax on the payments: $1,000 So, I am paying $13,000 divided by 36 monthly payments (about $360 a month) and can give the car back to Ford at the end. If I want to keep the car, I pay Ford $12,500 plus tax of about $1,000 or $13,500. I have done the math and the interest rate I am paying 4.36% per year.

Went from the Civic Hybrid to the C-Max and WOW what a difference, not just in the EV mode, but in every aspect. I loved the Civic, but so far the C-Max has outdone it in every way. Full EV to work and half way back and in the past 1.5 months I have used only half a tank. It has unexpected power and I would consider it to be somewhat of a luxury vehicle, since it came with every option, except auto park. Both my wife and I love it and it was a great choice, especially since the Prius has gone a bit overboard on its styling and who isn't sick of seeing a grey Prius everywhere. Cargo space is the only downfall.

Way better than a Prius!

My last 4 cars were Priuses, my wife also drives a Prius. Her first response when she drove my C-Max was, "WOW!" I wanted a plug in, but the Prius plug in wasn't available yet in my state (plus, it's about 8 grand more than I paid for my C-Max), so I took a look at the C-Max Energi. SO GLAD I DID! I LOVE THIS CAR! It is better than the Prius in every possible way, except, possibly, reliability, which in the Prius is legendary, the C-Max could be too, just haven't had it long enough to know. It is faster, more quiet, much more comfortable, and the deal I got was unbelievable (especially when you include the $4,500 refundable federal tax credit!). I'm also getting more miles per charge than advertised, as much as 28 miles. Update: now that the cold weather has arrived, the range is down to about 16 miles, but I'm still averaging 76 mpg through the first 17,000 miles. You can charge it at home, fully charges overnight, with a regular outlet, as best we can tell, it cost about $20 per month in electricity, and, lucky for me, I have fast chargers available to me for free at my work (fully charges in just over 2 hours). I cannot recommend this car more highly! Crazy thing is, I never see any on the road? Ford, clearly, isn't doing a good enough job marketing this car, it blows the Prius away, and I know what I'm talking about, between my wife and me, we've had seven, never thought I'd by any other car.

Don't want my car/ Car is back after reprogramming

Joan, 08/21/2016

We signed the papers to lease this car on Saturday, August 13, 2016. 62 miles on the odometer. After sitting in the lot learning how to operate the car, we were ready to go! But the car would not start. Nothing! No one knew what to do, but finally they got it going. The salesman said that they reset the code. Drove home ( with a Ford employee following in case of a breakdown) and got home with no problem. On Wednesday, August 17th the car would not start again. Now there were 122 miles on the odometer. I had the car towed to the nearest dealership and there she sits. The service manager called and said that the "electronic control module for hybrid" needs replacing. This part is on back order. Does this mean that there is a run on this part?? I no longer want this car. I bought this car to replace my 14 year old car, because I wanted a reliable car. Ha ha. I'd like to be able to keep in touch with Ray Brisbine of CA. He seems to have had the same experience and I'd like to know if his problems were resolved. We got the car back from dealer service after 2 weeks. The service manager told us that Ford engineers called him and said the car did not need a new control module, but rather the computer needed re-programming. So, Ford engineers talked the dealer tech people through a complete re-programming of my c-max energi. We've had it back for 4 days and it is running well. We hope that this is "the fix". The service manager said that they have gotten a recall for all c-max energi cars, probably for this reprogramming. We still have a minor problem: holding the lock sensor area for a second does not work to lock the doors. However, unlocking does work. Also, if I lock the doors with the power door locks while exiting, the car locks, but about 15 seconds later the horn beeps loudly until car is unlocked. We found the Ford dealership to be very helpful during this period, even giving us a lender car to keep for the duration of the repair.

Great gas mileage

Updating my CMax review, what a great car. Words can't explain the potential of this plug in Hybrid. To start I have 31,120 miles and have used 221 gallons of gas. Doing the math shows the mileage that is possible, it has achieved 140.27 mpg since new. My best tank of gas was 430 mpg and my worst tank was 32mpg. I went over a year without buying gas. I typically go around 30 miles on a charge. I have gone on a Sunday drive as far as 51 miles, while trying to see how far I could go. This 51 miles on a charge did take a lot of hyper mileing and slow speeds out on rural country roads. During the hot summer months in Oklahoma the battery still goes around 15+ miles on a charge. For anyone living in a small town or large city this is a car to consider. It is not at it's best on the freeways. Typically it gets around 40+ mpg on the open road. In city driving it's possible to never buy gas. Reading some test drives it seems that their purpose is to only focus on the low side of what the car can do. If you live less than 30 miles from your work and it does not include any high speed freeway driving you can go to and from work on one charge, this is a fact. I was so impressed with this car I purchased my wife a 2017 Fusion Energi. She has 11,300 miles and has used 62 gallons which is 182.26 mpg which is a 60/40 mix of driving on freeway and town. Her best tank so far was over 250 mpg and her worst was 34mpg. All I can say is this is a great car for anyone that wants to save on fuel and it does not take any trick driving to get great mileage. It will easily go 80 mph in all electric for a short distance, the trick is to not try to drive electric on the freeway save the battery for city driving by putting the car in EV later. I know of drivers that have gone over 11,000 miles on electric only. The ski is the limit if you really want to get a fun to drive little electric capable vehicle.

Beats Prius hands down

As an older shopper, all of the items rated, like interior comfort, ride height, comfortable seats were all important. The C-max just hits that sweet spot. It is far and away so much better than my 2011 Prius. The interior is downright PLUSH. The 10 way power seats are the most comfortable of all the hybrids tested, which included the NIRO, and Ioniq. The pwr tailgate is another plus. By the way, I have been getting 24 miles range on pure electric alone, which takes care of all our around town trips. We seldom use the engine on these trips so my fuel mileage rating is currently 68.6 miles per gallon! It takes abt 6 hrs to charge a fully depleted battery, and that's on 120 volt outlet. I am amazed how much better this car is as opposed to my Prius. The Ford cvt does not whine like the Prius, acceleration is way better, sound insulation keeps the entire car quiet. I don't know why the C-MAX was not on my radar when I first started looking for a new hybrid, but I am sure glad I stopped to check it out! Ford has definitely upped their game! 02/10/18- I have not changed my opinion, the Ford continues to be far superior to the Prius in all areas. We now have 3000 miles of mostly local driving. Since this is mainly battery, my average MPG is now reading 91.1 mpg!! I absolutely love the fact that I can charge from a normal 120 volt outlet. It makes it so easy. The electric stays all electric until the charge is gone. I have noticed a shorter range in winter where electric seat heaters take the largest draw during use. When it does move into hybrid mode acceleration is way faster than the Prius. The only thing I would like would be for more storage up front. I might also add that everything works as intended. That is quite different from the Continental we had back in 2010. That was such a poor car, we traded it in for the Prius! Like I said before, Ford has really improved a significant amount.08/12/18-update. We now have about 6000 miles on car with a couple of vacation trips. My mileage showing on dash is 76.7 mpg. I can routinely get up to 28 miles on battery power alone. When home, we normally run short trips , usually a round trip is ALL on electric. When we get home, I plug into a 120 volt outlet and fully recharge within 6 hrs. Having 120 volt plugin is convenient. On the plus side, we also received a 4500 credit on our taxes, so it was like getting the plugin capability for free. The amazing part is that I have not noticed any increase in our electric bill. I wanted a car were I could wait in car and run air and all electrical while waiting and NOT run the gas engine. With the lithium batteries, this allows me to do so. With the Prius, with the nickel metal hydroxide batteries, I could not do without running the gas engine at least 2 or 3 times. The engine/battery switchover with the Ford is totally invisible, you don't notice it at all, not so with Prius. All in all, Ford has produced a great car. It is a shame that 2017 is last model year. They really needed to promote better. I guess Escape is next to get electric??? 02/15/19-update. Everything I have said above remains true today. We currently have about 9000 miles on the car and have been driving it further without battery power so mileage is recording 62.8mpg. I feel that this is still fantastic. Battery mileage in the winter has been reduced by about 50 percent. Everything still works on car and it has not been back to dealer. This was my experience with the Prius too. It is a shame they are not building the Energi any longer, but I believe the Cmax without the plugin is still on market for this one last year. When I take the car to our other house, a 240 mile trip, the recorded mileage is between 39-42mpg.

And buy gas every 1200 miles or so for 10 gal. I drive at 80 plus 20 miles each way to work and home. Charge at home and work So get a fair amount of elec use. I est the elec cost @ 85. A gal equivalent for the electricity But the best part is not going to gas station often and just quiet elec is

In energi model, battery takes up about half of the small hatchback area, but a cover over the battery gives a decent sized flat area for groceries, so can still fit a full cart load. Larger items, not so much. Rear seats fold down, but battery makes hump in what would be a large flat space. This cargo arrangement works for me, but really wouldn't work if I had full sized stroller or lots of gear.

A few weeks ago, I traded in my 10 year old BMW Z4 3.0si for the C-Max Energi with the higher trim level. The C-Max Energi is not the Z4. This will never be the impractical joy that my Z4 is to drive. But, the Z4 isn't the competition. The Prius is. So, I drove my friend's Prius last night. The C-Max really out shines it. The C-Max has more acceleration, better road feel, a better quality interior, more comfortable seats, and a nicer info-entertainment center than the Toyota. I learned how to drive a hybrid for mileage on a Ford Escape Hybrid (I love the Escape - 250K miles and only $2500 in repairs, and it tows 3,500 lbs). It taught me how to get good mileage in a hybrid. When driving easy around town with acceleration and braking which makes anyone following turn tomato red, I get around 50 mpg in straight hybrid mode. On the freeway, I get mid-30s to low 40s. With the car drawing on the big battery in pure electric mode, I get far better mileage. I drive with Lyft and Uber for some extra cash and have had people comment on how spacious the car is for a small vehicle and how comfortable the seats are. Another commented on how well the Bluetooth phone sounded. Several people have been thrilled and excited by the automatic parking system. With the federal and state money, combined with the rebate Ford offered and the deal I got from my local Ford dealer, I'm paying as little for this as I would for a base Honda Accord. Compared to the Z4, this is making the payments with gas and insurance savings and functionality. I'll still miss the Z4. But, this is much easier to get in and out of.

Reviewer error: says load floor above battery is 1 ft higher than laid forward seat backs, is actually much less than that. Plenty of room for shopping bags and closing cargo cover. This might be the greatest commuter vehicle ever. Plenty of room for groceries and even the monthly Costco run. The HOV sticker is convenient. 500 mile range all reviewers and EPA report is irrelevant and useless information. I typically go over 2000 miles on a tank. Engine could last half a million miles if it only is on 20% of the time! Down side is that the battery cooling system is inadequate for a 2 charge per day use. My battery capacity is down 25% from new. I monitor battery temperature and switch to EV Later mode if battery is getting too hot.

Using it almost exclusively on electric mode. I make a lot of short trips and can go about 24 miles in all electric mode. Great rebates from Ford, Federal government and State of California. My utility company will pay for charging the first year and after that on all-electric mode it is about 1.5 cents per mile. Very happy with the car.

We bought the plug in hibred because most of out shopping consists of 16 mile trips to the grocery store and to the doctors office. The car will go more than that distance on batteries alone so no gas costs. Also since the body is based on the wagon and sitting position is upright it is much easier to get into and out of for handicapped people like me, which was a big selling point. Also Ford gave very generous rebate and discounts, making it a realatively inexpensive car for what it is. We compared it with the Audi Etron and the BMW 320e, the only other plug in hibreds available. . After a years of driving, all in city traffic, it's a great car. We charge it up regularly and get about 18 miles on a charge in hot weather with the AC on. Getting in and out of the car is easy for old handicapped people. In hybrid mode it gets 44.3 MPG, in electric mode it uses no gas at all. We ar enot big users of electronics so can't judge the electronics such as bluetooth because we don't use them. The 120 V charger that came with the car charges in about 5.5 hours. I b ought a 240 V charger that charges in about 2.5 hours. Maximum milage on one charge has been 21 miles but 18 is average and winter is less, maybe 16 miles.

Ford Should Promote this Car More Widely!

We just turned in our leased Chev Volt (lloved the technology but interior was way too small) and went looking for a roomier electric and gas car. We live in Alaska so a full electric car is a too hard to manage (few charging stations). These Energi combo vehicle works great. After looking at the new Prius and testing higher end hybrids (Avalon, Malibu, etc.) we settled on the CMax Energi for two main reasons: (a) comfort - this is a great vehicle for us and has plenty of headroom (I'm 6'2" and could not physically fit into a Toyota Avalon) and (2) Price - we got a fantastic deal on the 2016 model in January 2017... oh, and the amazing feud economy is also a given... After one month driving in temps from -20F to 37F we couldn't be happier - the car has great winter features and gets better mileage than the Volt! Oh... and I finally get to sit upright again... so why doesn't Ford promote this vehicle more actively?

Second CMAX Energi - Love IT

I now have a 2017 and I had a 2014 CMAX Energi Titanium and SEL, respectively. I am getting 60 plus mpg with 70% highway and non local trips. I save the EV for stop and start situations and generally match the speed limit. Comfortable interior, great visibility and great handling. Quiet car for a wagon like vehicle. Despite the loss of cargo space due to the larger battery pack vs .regular CMAX, I get a lot of furniture, goods and material into the car with the rear seat laying down. The loading area is not flat but I can put many things in thru the rear hatch and place them on the rear seat area, plus fill the nooks and crannies with loads of treasures. Only downside is that the Ford Navigation System is woeful in so many ways compared to my friends vehicles. Rarely can I use the factory navigation and I resort to my smart phone for directions and maps. I put 45,000 trouble free miles on my 2014 CMax Energi and now have 25,000 miles on my 2017. Minor warranty issues in first 5,000 miles otherwise smooth sailing. I am planning to buy my 2017 at lease end in 2020 as it is such a nice vehicle for me in every way and I feel very ecologically positive charging at night and at power company sites plus I get great gas mileage.

I went to the dealership looking at Escapes - I wanted a hatchback, "decent" gas mileage, and lots of bells and whistles. My salesman asked If I'd considered a C-Max - I was anti-hybrid prior to this but he showed me a 2015 lease turn in. First, LOTS of options! Second - Sits like a small SUV, plenty of pep, and handles beautifully with the wider tires and bigger wheels! Third - 80+ MPG is not out of the question - and between initial charge on the Energi and Hybrid backup, I see this on a pretty consistent basis. After 2400 miles of ownership, I just filled up for the 3rd time. Everyone who has ridden with me compliments the interior, quiet ride, and comfort - and then I tell them the fuel economy and they are shocked! No regrets here, I'm in love with this car!

I just bought a C-MAX Energi and compared it to a 2017 Prius V and drove a 2013 Prius before. I never thought that I would even think about "fun" when driving a car until I drove the Prius V and realized what I was missing, it dives like a van and acceleration is non-existant. The C-Max is very different, it can drive it like my 200hp Passat, then the milage drops considerably but there is also the option to drive it more carefully and Ford has integrated a lot of tools to monitor efficiency with to get very good mpg. For me it's the perfect compromise of both worlds, although the mpg is somewhat lower than a Prius. Interior quality is much better than a Prius V and the regular Prius's outside is just hideous, IMO. - The plug-in Energi will be discontinued in 2018 and eventually be replaced by an Escape version (according to Ford). Currently the price for the C-Max Energi are below the regular hybrid after the tax deduction. The price will be largely influenced by the extras since the discounts are not applied on these. I decided I needed heated seats (cold weather package $300) and the reversing sensors and camera with bigger screen (package 401A $1200) you can get both and leather seats with package 402A ($1600). I stayed away from the Navigation which is another $800 since this is included in every phone and thus useless since the C-Max support both apple carplay and android auto.

Waited patiently to replace my '08 Ford Ranger with a new one, but, when they finally came out in '19 it was a HUGE let down - because they're so huge. When I considered all the options, I found an off-lease '16 Ford CMax energi and bought it. I had rented Prius hybrids in the past but thought they were noisy, rode like a buckboard and a cheap/cheesy interior and no acceleration if needed. The CMax energi shares none of those traits! It is quiet, good firm ride and comfortable leather interior. I have averaged 103 MPG even after two high-speed turnpike round trips - not disappointed at all with mileage and performance. Merging onto a 70 MPH highway is a snap! Yes, I miss my Ranger but am learning to really love the CMax energi. It is a great car and fits my driving scenario well. I would have bought a 2019 but the Wayne, MI plant was retooled to build the new Ranger. So, CMax, CMax energi and Focus took a hike. The new Ranger is just too big to fit in my condo's 2 car garage...it's almost 2 ft longer than was my '08 extended cab XLT - which just fit. If I'd wanted a Monster Truck, I'd have bought an F150! UPDATE: I've shown my MPG because of Maine winter driving. To have heat and defrost, I must run the engine in EV-later mode a lot, so the MPGe is down to mid-seventies because of that. Still costs less than half of what it did to run my Ranger in the winter months. Completely trouble-free car that is great in snow (with snow tires) and still fun to drive. UPDATE- In the past year I have started to use the Parking Assist . Being "old school" I felt it was a useless feature, however, since trying it I find works so well that I use it constantly now! I still feel this was the best plug-in hybrid, ever. Update - still have the CMax energi and it's going on 7 yrs. old. The vehicle is still impressive. and it fits my driving purposes well. It's fuel mileage is logging about 105 MPG. I did swap out the small 12 VDC battery last fall because it was original and they recommend replacement every 5 yrs as a rule of thumb.

...is a vehicle that delivers more than the promised by the looks or the name. It's the driver's little secret. That's my 2017 C-Max Energi, an overachiever. Let's get this out front- for the first 16 months and 20,000 miles, it's recorded 65 mpg, not counting the 74 cents of shore power I've fed it every night. Plug-in hybrid mileage varies enormously by usage; I'm met owners claiming 200 MPG, but they're using another car for every long trip. You can squeeze out about 7,500 miles of EV driving per year, but that's not my style. This is my only car, and every week I take several long drives of 100-200 miles. Typically a tank of gas lasts 650 miles or so. So it's an excellent Economy Car- but it's also a great highway cruiser, quiet, stable, comfortable, well equipped. And, if you care to, you can go 0-60 in under eight seconds. It's not a truck, a van or an SUV, but it does the job of "car" better than any other I've owned. My net cost was about $20k, after $9000 of Federal and state tax credits- that's one factor that leads to a low resale value. 45,000 mile update- with 3 1/2 years under its belt, the C-Max is still running strong. The only issue i'm having is a balky infotainment unit. It's sometimes slow to respond to touch commands, and the bluetooth connection to my phone is now unreliable. I plug my phone into the car's USB outlet as a workaround, and this also charges the phone while I drive. My OEM Michelin energy saver tires lasted 40k miles. I replaced them with Michelin Primacy runflat tires, and my overall fuel consumption dropped to 60 mpg. Well worth it, I think, for that added assurance (the C-Max has no spare tire), plus better adhesion to the road. I enjoy driving this car so much that I have no idea what could replace it.

Incredibly surprised by this car. It could be because we've had Three Siennas (Great BTW) 5 Prius's or Prii, not sure don't have an issue with ambiguous plural for Prius, and a 15 year old Thread with over 200k on it that we were so hesitant conceive let alone buy a non-Toyota. That changed dramatically when we took this CMax for a drive and the transmission changeover from Electric to gas is almost imperceptible. The car handles really well and the Sync system and dash electronics really sealed the deal. Granted we only have 5800 miles on it and it was a New Car despite being a model year old, we really are completely satisfied with this car. For some reason getting in and out is easier than the others and the noise levels at highway speeds are really much quieter than were used to. We read all about the horrors of Sync and really worried about that as well. Whatever version ofnSync is in our 2017, it is by far among the best we've used. Combined gas-electric MPG is 69.2 and we do drive it in EV Priority mode around most days. We really could not have both been so shocked at our satisfaction with our purchase. Don't get me wrong, we still have two Prius's spin the family as college cars, but We would not hesitate in recommending a CMax to someone in this category. Maybe we need counseling?????

This is not a Volt. A Volt has a bigger battery and we can go all summer on about 5 gallons of gas. Energi has a much smaller HV battery and that’s ok. I think the theory is you can drive an Energi about 70% of the time on electric. Very good road car. Engine and cabin are very quiet on highway. Great headroom. Only have 7000 miles on it so no problems so far. Nice tight car. I’d buy it again.

Averaging 64.4 MPG and Climbing!

The Ford C-Max Energi is a wonderful and economical automobile. It has incredible fuel economy, especially if one lives in an area where one's commute is short. The advertised all-electric range of the car is 19 miles. However, given the right conditions, I have occasionally gotten 30 all-electric miles from a charge. More commonly I will get 23-25. In the winter, it's mid to high teens, since batteries don't work as well in the cold. As for the gasoline hybrid mode, I have also found that the car consistently gets better mileage than advertised. Typically, I get 41-46 mpg when the car is shifted into hybrid mode. And the really cool thing about the C-Max is that it is able to do this without sacrificing power. It's quick off the line and can get you up to highway speeds in around 7 seconds. Now, if you floor it, you will probably pull some gas, but that's that. The dash display is really nice; it's visually very refined and provides a number of helpful performance metrics. I would say the vehicle really only has two major downsides. The first is obvious: the PHEV battery takes up half of the trunk, so cargo space is restricted. The other is not as obvious. The turning radius on this car is really pretty awful. My wife's Jeep Patriot can probably do a full turn in half the space. With that being said, I would still highly recommend this car. Very economical!

Love love love the car. I bought it specifically for my wife who drives under 20 miles a day, so total electric. But she's heading off on spring break vacation to NY (covid secure!). The car will get her all the way to Syracuse for a total of 20 gallons of gas. The last car took twice that. Very solid car, great road manners and MPG, plus total electric around town.

This car was purchased June 29, 2016 .From Livermore Ford in Livermore California...drove the car 39 miles--there are 84 miles on the speedometer. In less than 24 hours, the car would NOT start! Two weeks plus and Ford still has NO fix for this problem. The car is still sitting at the dealership and cannot be started. The dealer service dept. is still waiting to hear from Ford Motor Co. for some type of "fix". The Customer Service Rep. from Ford Motor Co. had only one suggestion "give them time to fix the problem." Wow--we have no new car to drive, and Ford has our money which paid for the entire price of the car in cash! We are home now--900 miles from the new car, which we could not drive home, and no one seems upset by this problem except for us and the dealership which has the car..Ray Brisbine [contact info removed]..[ July 24 and still do not have car ] Update--Took Ford Motor Co. & Livermore Ford 10 weeks to resolve this problem! Car is fine, but dealership & Ford are NOT customer friendly in any way Update: left two messages for Dianna Duke, the Sales Manager at Livermore Ford, and she has not returned my calls. The original problems were magnified by the total and complete inaction of Livermore Ford--which apparently continues today!

Update: My 2016 Ford C-Max Energi SEL is now four years old. I have replaced the APIM at a cost just under $1300.00. I still sometimes get a seemly false no GPS symbol occasionally. But the moving map still operates correctly. I bought a map update but, the ESN number for the new APIM was different from the records I had a hard time getting maps compatible with the new APIM and had the correct ESN number. The most positive thing I can say about it is the fuel economy. My average MPGe is right now 67. I now have passed 43,000 miles. I have recently made a seven to eight hour trip from Texas to Louisiana. I drive on electric/auto gas setting and I charge frequently. My electric bill has probably gone up $5 to $8 a month approximately. I have found the electric miles I get per charge depends a lot on temperature. This November in South Texas has been warmer then usual and I have gotten at times 18 to 20 electric miles per charge. The noise it makes when running only on gasoline and travelling at low speeds has now almost gone away. But, the manual says the noise was normal. At highway speeds the cabin noise is quiet except when doing extreme acceleration in hilly terrain but, the pick-up is good. Also, when on cruise control it does lose the set speed more than I would expect when driving on hilly terrain. I think this is suppose to be a gas saving feature as I read the manual. This is not desirable.

This the best overall car we have ever owned. Quiet, fun and economical. Update: 4-2-20 We now have over 25,00 miles on the car and still love it. We have recorded the mileage after ever fill-up and to date have averaged a little over 52 mph. Of course that includes gasoline and electric charges. But it makes us feel good. Our only problem has been a screw coming out of the bracket which holds the left visor. They replaced it for free.

Overall I like it, particularly the fact that I buy gas about every 2 months except when I take a trip -- I'm retired and so most of my driving is around town, but still do some road trips and its quite comfortable on those. My main complaints are actually related to dealership. For a couple of years I've had an alarm problem and they can never fix that, I also have a rattle in cold weather that they never seem to have the 'body' people in to look at that, and there's a flap in the front that falls open and is very poorly designed. I also find the ventilation system very frustrating -- when used in automatic mode, it runs the fan so fast I can't hear anything.

We bought a new 2015 C-Max Hybrid. Found it to be very comfortable, easy to drive, peppy, fit nicely into parking spots, good mileage (not like a Prius's mileage but much nicer to drive IMO). The hatch had plenty of room, I could fit my bike in there without taking off the tire! We liked it so much but when we got solar panels on our roof we decided to get the PHEV, so we bought a 2017 PHEV. And gave the 2015 to our daughter. The C-Max Energi does not have as much room in the back, but the front is just as comfortable. We were happy with both of them and probably would have kept buying C-Maxes, but they stopped making them. I still don't know why. It does not have high clearance like an SUV but as long as you know that you should be fine. Update June 2022. Still love it and feel this way! Updated December 2023. Still like the car—our daughter is still driving and loving hers (non-Energi). It has over 130,000 miles. The battery on the PHEV is now charging to about 2/3 of what its capacity was a few years ago. I don’t know much about how long that should last.

Gas mileage no better than previous car-a 2012 Ford Focus. Low to the ground so hard to get in and out of-regularly hit head. Batteries reduced cargo area. Shift stick was in the way of some dashboard items making them hard to see/reach. But a comfortable drive, good brakes and excelleraton. Needed no major repairs in 2 years.

It takes a lot of battery to power the heater and the fans... and it takes a long time for the car to warm up which makes the car on short 10 mile trips get 23mpg most of the time... 4 months out of the year. during the summer the car averages out at 43mpg and in July I did not even go to the gas station. but the electricity bill was $40 higher too. in the winter its not worth charging the car because it don't use it anyway... it says the engine needs to stay on for performance when I try to go to 100% EV mode. so I don't even try. the hybrid mode doesn't even kick in below 20 degrees on the short trips. so that's something to consider before you buy a C-Max and that the dealership wont tell you. the battery has an 8 year warrantee and will die soon after... the battery is a lithium ion they only live for 10 years or so... yes they can live longer... and if you take care of them most will but... a lot of people wont... if you don't keep a lithium ion battery between 40% and 80% for most of its life and you let it die and over charge often... your battery will die at the 10 year mark probably. but if you take care of it... keep it charge between %40 and 80% it might last the life of the car. its a good car... but I regret getting it and the competition has better cars than this.

The C-Maxi Energi is a great platform. It has a beautiful ride and is very comfortable. Very nice handling and performance. Real-world gas mileage is 41 mpg. One downside with the C-Max is the high replacement parts cost. One headlamp is about $1300 plus labour. There's lots to love about this car. Too bad Ford decided to stop producing them with this model year. Just spent our first cold winter with the C-Max (we are usually in warm weather for the winter). Electric range was down to 18 miles, fully charged. Using electric only in cold weather has the problem of drawing down the battery for the heater and seat warmers. Suggest switching to motor only to save the battery for use later.

2017 Chrysler Pacifica Mini Van Turning Radius 19.85′ + 2017 Ford C-Max Turning Radius 19.19′ !! The Handling of the C-Max leaves alot to be desires, the U turn is so wide you feel like your driving a Truck or actually the Escape SUV made the U turn better !! Why it gets 40 mpg the salesman said, gee I get that on my Honda Civic gasoline engine older car !!

I have a Ford C-Max and truly love it more than the Toyota Prius I owned. It has comfortable supportive seats, seat warmers for on cold days, great front window view, better gas milage and more comfortable seats than the Toyota Prius I previously owned. The keyless access to unlock the doors is the best ever! The sensors can detect the key in your pocket and unlock the door. There are many other positives about my Ford C-Max that I absolutely love as well. If I live long enough, I will purchase another one without hesitation.
