Great Van!
I special ordered this van in December 2005 (I wanted a selection of options and color I could not find in stock); it arrived in April 2006. So far: I love it! It is comfortable and fun to drive (while keeping in mind it is a cargo van) The quality is excellent (only one defect--a trim piece the dealership corrected quickly without complaint); and the mileage has been from 24-29mpg. I simply don't have any complaints, and if anything happened to it, I would immediately order a replacement.
Dodge Sprinter 2500
If you need high cubes in a vehicle that provides remarkably good performance despite low rated horsepower, and unbelievable fuel economy, you can't do better than the Dodge (Mercedes Benz) Sprinter. The 158" W.B. SHC model offers 13 ft cargo length, a 73 inch standing height, yet has a short turning radius that will amaze. The 5 cylinder turbocharged diesel engine starts and runs like a gasoline engine, with no diesel clatter or smoke, all while achieving 25mpg or so. The seating position is very high, offering great visibility. The seats are 6 way adjustable, and include an adjustable air bladder lumbar support. Overall, this is a great vehicle that won't disappoint.

Why can't America build a van like this?
It may have a Dodge or Freightliner name but it is all Mercedes. Wht can't America build a 22ft long, 9 foot tall van, with a 3,000 ld payload and still get 23 miles per gallon. I love it, I just wish we could build the same. We can go to the moon, land a rover on Mars, but we can't defeat the Germans in the auto market.
Great van
This is the van for a service professional. You do not have to bend over to reach heavy tools and can stand up straight while grabbing parts. The first job I did after getting the van set with shelves and drawers involved removing an 80gallon solar storage tank. I hefted it out of the basement and stood it up straight into the van! What a back-saver. Got 27mpg one time, it averages about 23 all-around. It can carry broken concrete piled up about 3ft high in payload area.
Best Van On The Planet
Hauls like a tractor trailer, yet sips fuel like a VW. Doesn't get the 27 mpg as promised, but gets 21 mpg with it loaded to the max and an employee driving like he stole it. A little expensive, but worth it if you have the money.
Great Van Until it Broke Down
We (husband/wife)use our van to haul expedited freight. It's really nice for a work truck. Unfortunately the crank shaft pulley fell off for no apparent reason. When the pulley fell off, it may have damaged the crank shaft where the pulley attaches. We were 1000 mi. from home with freight to deliver! It is in the shop now & with our warranty expired, it looks to be expensive. I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem. We keep it well maintained.
DO NOT BUY IT FROM DODGE "DITTO"
We own two of these Sprinter vans. If you like having the bodies rust out, harmonic balancers fall out on the freeway, difficulty finding parts, long waits at the dealerships for service,THEN THIS IS THE VAN FOR YOU. Chrysler has no intention of helping it's customers when these things fall apart. And their Business Link program is not worth the paper it is written on. We have had both of them at different dealerships this week. Both sat over 5 days before even getting into the shop. Not worth the extra money you pay for these things.
Sprinter
The Sprinter is by far the best service vehicle I have ever owned. It is fun to drive and a pleasure to work out of. My Sprinter is loaded at about 6900 lbs, (gvw) right now and my MPG is averaging 23 mpg. I was getting about 10mpg with my p/up truck and service trailer. The fuel savings alone is huge for a small business owner like me. This vehicle is actually paying for itself.
sprint for the sprinter
i am impressed with its 22mpg and a range of 500 miles. the cab is roomy with a wide view windshield. its not a lexus level ride but satisfying for a cargo van. the only option i added was the left hand sliding door and a included right hand sliding door. the diesel engine purrs at idle, and get lil noisy once you open it up on the freeway. for a van its lively to drive and nimble.the 118wb is handy for tight allys and docks. tha cago bed is bare bones: owners retrifit the back for their needs. examples are hvac contractor, delivery for work, other owners retrofitted the back and a fun 'n sun surf van, or a mobile ham radio station for leasure.
DO NOT BUY IT FROM DODGE
I have had it in three times for stalling out .The egr valve they tell me is the problum. The van only has 17,000 miles on it and it is now going in for the forth time. The seals on the doors leak so you get a lot of air coming in. The rear end is starting to make noise the MILE PER GALLON START OUT HIGH AND CONTINUE TO DECREASE AS THE MILES ADD UP. YOU ALSO CANNOT PUT A PALLET IN THE CARGO AREA ON A 3500. THE DRIVING LAMPS CANNOT BE TURNED OFF IF YOU ARE USING IT AS A EXPIDITER THIS IS A REAL PROBLUM ALONG WITH YOU CANNOT LEAVE IT IDLE FOR MORE THEN 15 MINUTES IF YOU ARE GOING TO BUY A SPRINTER DO NOT GO TO DODGE!!!!!!! GO TO A FREIGHTLINER DEALER
Great Van
I've owned this van for several months now, and I have just returned from a 3400 mile trip to the east coast. This van has met all my expectations. It is fun to drive, is well put together, and has good fuel economy (considering it is a truck). I got nearly 30mpg on one full tank of gas on the interstate with careful driving. I ordered the van with special options since I wasn't in a hurry to take possession and I wanted this to be my last van purchase. I ordered the cruise control and the power windows and door locks. These two options have been very accommodating and I would suggest them to others, though they are a bit expensive.
Initially pricey, but worth it
I live in Littleton, CO and use my van for garage door service and installation. I tow a 3200# trailer with about an additional 1000# payload. My Sprinter does well. Power is consistent even at high elevations, thanks to the fact that it is turbocharged. I did have a problem that took three service visits to correct. The outside temp sensor, located behind the rear license plate was the problem for its poor engine performance. Then they changed the oil with regular oil rather than synthetic at the first service interval. I will switch to a new dealer for service. My fuel mileage is between 18 and 19.5, with 17,000 miles on the odometer. It is really fun to drive.
Great Work Van
I have owned this van for past year and I never had any problems. It's great on fuel and cheap to operate. I highly recommend it.
After two I have had enough
My company purchased two Sprinter Vans, one in 2004 and one in 2005 with high expectations. Other than being almost impossible to get serviced at any of the dealers (bought them from two different dealers)these vans have been a big disappointment. Dodge customer service is worthless and their "Business Link" program is a total farce. Bad paint (rust), harmonic balancers that fall off, turbos that come apart, incorrect parts for brakes, electrical problems etc. We have both vans in the shop now and it will be 4 more days before they can look at them. One has 85K and the other 110K. The idea was better gas mileage (yes) and less down time....A BIG NO. Really bad in wind and snow.
2500 SHC 158
i would havve given the Sprinter a much higher rating if it wasn't for a couple of things. 1: The steering wheel doesn't tilt and so I have to sit closer (which I dislike) to the steering wheel in order to be somewhat comfortable. I drive for a living and so I spend several hours a day in my Sprinter. 2: Finding out after I bought it that I cannot tow a horse trailer. I raise horses and it would have been nice to know that it has a 5000lb towing max. 3: Not being able to idle the engine. But there is still alot I like such as oil changes every 10,000mi and the ease of handling a van of this size.
Best
It handles like a mercedes sports car!
Sprinter, It's about time !!!!
I bought this vehicle for work. I avg 240 miles a day, roughly 10 hours driving time. Most stop and go. This vehicle is fantastic!! Has 373 cuft of cargo space, gets an avg of 20.7 mpg. Drives better than most cars. Maintenance is a piece of cake. Oil change every 10,000. I put in new brake pads every 25-30,000, about the same for tires. Starts every morning, no rattles and shakes. I do drive on quite a few "goat paths" , where my 2000 Dodge Ramvan rattled apart. I would definetly buy another when this one dies. In about 300,000!!! , try that with a gas engine. Plenty of power even when slightly overloaded. No problem keepin up with traffic on the highway.
Best Small Company Van I know
This vehicle has excelent power and pick up for its size. It is fun to drive except in strong gusty side winds. It is confortable for long rides and easy on fuel. Seems to handle the same regardless of load except that it feels better with a load than it does empty. This is the overall best vehicle I can think of for a small company. It haneles great, brakes saved our lives several times recently. It is a great marketing tool with our logo on the sides since it attracts a lot of attention. It is unfortunate that the Dodge dealerships in the U.S. don't appreciate the great vehicle they have. There is very little knowledge on the part of sales staff and service personel.
Serves the Purpose Very Well
Can't say enough good about it. It is fun to drive and performs exceedingly well, even over the mountains.
Very, very good, could be better
This is my second Sprinter. #1 was totalled in a collision. This van needs more comfort, seats, tilt wheel, better visibility from front windows (pillar blocks view badly). However, 24mpg is amazing, turn radius, efficiency and convenience is unbeatable. I would like to have the standard transmission (seen in Europe). We use it for transporting show dogs, it works great. Best in class. I did have a mysterious fuel delivery problem - needed some repairs. The electric door locks are quirky and blows fuses sometimes. Overall, I would buy a third one in a heart beat. Although barring any more collisions, this should hold
Sprinter Makes a Great Cargo Van/Truck
This van has a HUGE open cargo space, great features, similar pricing to competition but gets better gas milage and has a larger area to haul goods/machinery! This van has saved us multiple trips by taking it all- we have our solution to our once pain in the neck logistics problem!
Great vehicle
I use a power wheelchair for mobility and bought a Sprinter Van instead of a Chevy or Ford for the first time in 30 years. I did not have to raise the roof or cut up the floor. Sprinter is spacious, easy to drive, has great visibility and gets great mileage. It can be a little loud on the highway and has that rough cargo van ride. Overall, I highly recommend the vehicle.
Good Idea Gone Bad
Great space, great concept, but problems, problems, problems. Not worth the money. Any fuel savings have been dwarfed by maintainence costs. Lost motor to timing chain failure at 128000 miles. Not a happy camper.
NO BRAINER
Payload, fuel economy, comfort, life of vehicle. You do not need to be a rocket scientist to figure this one out.I have "WORN OUT" 3 Dodge Ram 2500 Maxi Vans with the 360 engine. Nothing against them, BUT there is NO comparison here. This is a Mercedes. The logo is every where. The key, the glass, the drivers seat base. The body style check out your International news to see it used as ambulances all over Europe.
company owns it.
the van is great. It is so dependable.it handles good going down the highway.could use a little more room around wheel wells.Ican start it easy.It run very well with a full load.also empty.doors need some improvement.the sliding door broke with it closed not being able to open the sliding door in this big of a van is very important had to take it in for repair.real nice windshield.good factory stereo.cuise is nice.
Cargo Van of the next millenea
I have just taken possesion of my Sprinter(from Freightliner, not Dodge) and am thrilled to report that it was worth the wait(6 months for custom order). This van is meant for work. It can be customized for just about any trade.
Do They Use A Torque Wrench?
I purchased A new 2004 HC2500 Sprinter Van in August 04. I love the van, though I am having problems. The fuel injectors started leaking badly. That was fixed. Now the trans has started leaking. The driver's side wiper fell off the other day, and the auto lock on the driver's door has stopped working, and the seat belt adjuster has broken as well. The remote locking system is very poor. I would expect better from the folks at Benz. On the positive side, the van gets about 22-24 mpg. It is very roomy and comfortable to drive on long trips. It is very quiet for a cargo van.
Some good, some bad
I have found that if you are not carrying a lot of weight, the Sprinter is not very good in the snow. Winter cold air will get into the cockpit. A little on the noisy side. Radio reception is bad. I use the Sprinter as a showroom on wheels. Insulation is very poor in cargo area, if you work inside. Need the extra rear heater which I did not get. Seats very uncomfortable.
Love the Sprinter
Just bought a 158" dualie 3500 SuperHighCab that is built for a touring band, with 4 luxury captain's chairs behind the driver/passenger compartment. It has the upgraded transmission cooler pump for towing and no passenger rear sliding door. Entry into the cargo area is through the back doors. Great standup height, lots of room to build custom benches/bunks in the back. Also, solid towing power and passing speed when towing 3500lb trailer.
