Long term happiness
Had this truck for almost six years. Never had a vehicle anywhere near that long. Great power, pulls my horse trailer, my camper and has power to spare. Transmission started shifting erratically at about 150,000 miles, (although it was a tow vehicle since new) 5th wheel hitch was installed before I bought it. Best seats in a truck ever! Bottom not sore after trip to Iowa from Michigan. Wish it had more rear seat room, my family is outgrowing it.
Great design, poor build
On paper this is a great truck. Trouble is it could have been better assembled by monkeys. Biggest gripe is with the engine's plenum-pan gasket leaking. It causes the engine to consume oil excessively and ping heavily under load. I don't know of one of these trucks that doesn't have this problem (5.2 and 5.9L gas engines since 1994). It is neither cheap nor easy to repair.
Dependable blue sport
Good ride and great handling capability. Reliable. Those with bad experiences with the motor/automatic transmission, all I can say is proper maintenance goes a long way.103,000 miles and the motor and transmission (using the approved tranny fluid )are still strong. Not a dime spent other than fluids (oil changes) and 1 tune up on the engine, tranny. I would strongly recommend a tranny cooler added. The front seats are comfortable on long/short trips. This truck hauls loads with great braking and drive train capability. Only the evaperator, speed sensor, water pump, and light switch have been replaced .Not bad for 103,000 miles. Next truck will be another Dodge after this one wears out in 15 years or so.
Warning when buying used!!!
My girlfriend bought this truck out of impulse at a used car leader. It looks really good. But there are a number of things wrong with it and she has only driven it for 20,000 miles. it now has 171000. The transmission had to be replaced at ~160,000 which is really good for that transmission. Unfortunately the transmission is going out again. Also has an exhaust leak, heater core went out and doesn't have a block heater (which stinks in Montana weather) This winter the gas lines froze so don't forget to put Heat in the gas. The four wheel drives sticks really bad too. Just a warning for this year truck. Transmission usually go out between 50,000mi to 120,000mi.
Good Truck
I bought the truck new in 99 and have had good luck with it. I use it to pull a 3,000lbs boat all summer and do some intense off roading when ice fishing. I have had some warranty work for the intake manifold gasket and have changed brakes and tires from normal use. The suspension seems to be a bit soft as it sometimes will bottom out with load in bed and steering seems to have some extra play in it. The truck overall has performed good and has been reliable. I have always liked the styling which was the deciding factor to buy.
