2017 Dodge Durango Citadel 4dr SUV AWD (3.6L 6cyl 8A)

In my previous reviews, my wife and I were very positive about our 2017 Durango Citadel. We still give it five stars at just under 30,000 miles. We keep up with the routine maintenance schedule, oil changes, tire rotation, etc. It has had zero issues and has performed flawlessly. We continue to believe it's the best, most comfortable and convenient SUV on the market. My previous review (below) was very positive. If anything, I'd say it's even better after 14,500 miles. The vehicle has performed perfectly and spotlessly. It fits our needs very well; for example, hauling things and pulling our ski boat. The V6 is well more than adequate and tows the 4200 pounds of boat plus trailer easily. We love the vehicle's comfort and features. It's super comfortable on long trips. And now that it's winter having four heated seats plus the heated steering wheel is terrific, as is the ability to start the car via Connect. The touch entry and locking are very convenient. The controls are easy, ergonomic, and straightforward. In short, love the Durango. A great buy! If this isn't the best SUV on the market, I don't know what is. The Durango Citadel AWD we bought easily beats the Honda Pilot and Volvo XC90, which we considered, researched, and drove. The Durango's ride, comfort, technology (driver assist and ease-of-use), quietness, tow capability, space, and value are all better than the other two vehicles. In particular, we found the Pilot's ergonomics to need a fair amount of improvement. We especially like the rear bucket seats and console, along with the ample number and variety of electronic plugs. The car's controls, both front and rear as well as buttons and electronic, are very straightforward and easy to use. Attention to little details and conveniences, such as the handy built-in flashlight in the rear or the tuck-away roof crossbars, is splendid on the Durango.

That thing got a Hemi?

Jim, 01/12/2017

The 2011-2017 Dodge Durango was designed by Daimler-Chrysler and is built on the same chassis as the current Mercedes M-Class sport utility vehicle. Being heavily German by design it rides and handles well but doesn't have the Swiss-Army like interior of a Honda or Chrysler mini-van. The seats are very comfy but the way they fold and stow is just average (we have second row captain's chairs). The front seats are heated and cooled. The Uconnect infotainment system is very intuitive and works better than any infotainment system I've ever seen, having a combination of touch screen, knobs, buttons and voice activation. The system also allows i-phone users to access Siri. The Beats speakers are adequate but not astounding. The RT sits lower than standard Durangos, the suspension is a little firmer and the brakes bigger making this 5000 lb+ vehicle handle extremely well for its' size. Its' weight makes for a great ride on the road and the vehicle is bank-vault tight with no squeaks, rattles or excessive wind noise. The hemi is just plain cool-it's been a long time since I've owned a V-8 and the sound and performance are worth the so so gas mileage. Around town mileage stinks, averaging about 15 mpg if I don't lead foot it but on the highway I've gotten 22mpg thanks to the imperceptible selective cylinder management. The 8 speed ZF trans. is spectacular. The rear shocks are self-leveling and included with the tow package I got (it's rated to tow up to 7200 lbs.). Haven't towed with it yet but plan to. I feel as though I purchased a Mercedes M-Class for Dodge money. In my opinion this SUV is an exceptional value.

great vehicle ,great value. My last SUV was a 2014 Honda Pilot . I was in the market for a new good size SUV ,with great towing features and capacity. Dodge Durango was the perfect fit. I use this vehicle to transport cargo and family . This vehicle covers all aspects of my busy lifestyle from camping, towing my boat ,bringing stuff home for my lawn and garden . I couldn't find a better fit for my lifestyle. I am impressed with the design and performance from this vehicle . If you are looking for a vehicle thats not going to put you to sleep The Durango is what you are looking for . I am very satisfied in my choice . I smile every time I get in and start this SUV.

We bought a new 2017 Durango AWD RT after having an accident in our trusty Jeep Commander HEMI. I drive a Corvette with 465hp and must say, this thing is a BLAST to drive (Keep sport mode on and "eco" mode off). For a family car, you just can't go wrong. The Commander was nice, but so much improvement in engine/transmission/electronics over the past 6 years means a MUCH smoother, faster, better sounding beast than I could have imagined. I love this truck and am truly happy with it. Highly recommended! PS, the kids love the extra room in the 3rd row over the Commander too. Great work MOPAR.

Low Mileage Used Bargain!

2017 Dodge Durango GT 4dr SUV AWD (3.6L 6cyl 8A)

Our family drives them until they die so we looked hard and ever vehicle before we bought. We bought a used 2017 GT AWD with very low mileage on it. BARGAIN! 12K under new cost! We added the extended Warranty for $1,500 (7 years 100k miles bumper to bumper) for sanity sake. Be aware that on ANY new vehicle if any part of the electronics goes out....A 3K bill will be waiting for you!!! So far we have had zero issues. Vehicle is tight, no rattles, clangs, or bangs. We paid close attention to the Carfax and where the vehicle came from so we knew what we were getting. For the price you can't touch the features this comes with. It's loaded!! Nothing comes close. We looked and looked an compared and compared and again nothing came close. My wife loved that it doesn't look like every other SUV as well. It does ride a bit stiffer than other SUV's, but not an issue for us. The infotainment system is by far the most user friendly to use compared to others out there. It all makes sense. As an FYI, this vehicle is the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Mercedes GLK. We spent a lot of time getting in and out of many 3rd rows. This could seat adults fairly comfortably (Equal to a Ford Explorer). The second row heated seats are such a bonus too. I wouldn't pay the price for new one(let someone else take the hit!), but as a low mileage used SUV it's a standout for Price/Features. If you add a trailer hitch can take it to the dealer and have them add the towing feature to the computer.

First American Vehicle ever bought

Yup, I've had Volvos, BMWs, Lexus, Nissan, Toyota and Mazda in all the years I've been buying cars and this is the 1st American car I've ever owned and so far, so good. I love the vehicle and the entertainment system is very good. The one thing I'm wondering about is the feature for shutting the engine off automatically when the car is stopped. It's an auto stop feature for the engine and I'm wondering if this will cost the engine premature wear and tear. Yes, it can be shut off but I like knowing it helps to preserve gas and can bump up your MPG by 1.

The only con I’ve found so far is that it’s taller than our Trailblazer was, so it’s harder to get in the front seat. It has lots of pros so far. The ride is quiet and comfortable. It gets great gas mileage, 24-27 mpg. The gps is easy to program and easy to use. After owning this Durango for over a year, I think auto reviews under rate this suv. With great gas mileage, comfort and space, it has everything the owner could want. Extremely well equipped and we get compliments on it frequently.

This is the 3rd Durango for us. I mainly drive my Ram 1500 sport and my lovely wife drive this new Durango. We opted for the 3.6, the Ram does the heavy towing, because the family is pretty spread out. We wanted comfort, good looks and descent gas mileage. Having the Hemi in the Ram, I thought I might be disappointed in the performance... Nope, the 3.6 is plenty stout, reaching 60MPH in 7 seconds. The AWD is outstanding, push the sport mode button and back roads are a blast. Oh, did I mention that the styling doesn't look like pieces of the body are glued on. Most other SUV's, to me, look godey... I'll take good old American "Brownie", unibody, tough rugged stance any day.

Citadel V8 after 3 years

2017 Dodge Durango Citadel 4dr SUV AWD (3.6L 6cyl 8A)

We’ve owned a loaded Citadel with the Hemi V8 for three years. It has all the options except for the appearance ones. Overall we still like it. It’s roomy with a truly usable third row, combined with adaptive cruise control and a rear Blu-ray system, making it a great family road trip vehicle. It’s fairly smooth and stable on the highway, but not luxury car quiet. The suspension is on the firm side, so the ride can feel busy on rough pavements around town. It is fairly tall and long for a crossover, so it’s not very nimble around corners. But its reasonable width makes it fairly easy to park. Running boards help ease entry to the high step-in. Given the vehicle’s weight, the V8 is almost a necessity. The Hemi is strong in the mid-range with a nice growl. But it drones a bit in mundane local driving. The transmission up shifts smoothly but has occasional rough downshifts when slowing down. Handling is decent considering the weight and height. The AC, heated seats/steering wheel, and cooled seats have all worked well. Rain sensing wipers do not go to the highest speed automatically. The rear Blu-ray system works well, but the Beats sound system sounds muddy. Third row is roomy and has good visibility and is easy to access with second row captain chairs. Interior is logically laid out, but the materials are poor. It’s showing a lot of wear after 3 years of gentle use. Our 5 year old Lexus looks almost new in comparison. There aren't many storage bins. When the third row is up, there's not much cargo room behind it. The rotary shifter design is just stupid and can be confused with the AWD dial. Reliability wise, the original water pump failed and was replaced under warranty. Also had a couple of recalls performed for free. I had a hard time getting the OEM Bridgestone tires balanced. Gas mileage isn't great, unsurprisingly. 13-14mpg in local driving. 20mpg on long road trips. On the tech side, it has all the modern safety aids. The infotainment system is easy to navigate but the screen is low resolution. Ours doesn’t have Apple CarPlay but I think it comes standard in 2018 and later. I also wish it had front parking sensors. Overall, it's a well-designed family SUV that is the right size for us. The Hemi and RWD bias makes it fun to drive. It has a 4WD Low option, as well. But if you want a smooth and refined crossover that drives and sips gas like a sedan, this is not it.

My Red R/T Durango a Muscle Car SUV

If you are looking for a stylish race car but need an SUV, the Durango R/T is for you. With its dual tail pipe roaring exhaust which will get louder and more race car sounding in Sport Mode. The 360-365 HP, 5.7 liter Hemi engine is very responsive and sounds incredible with its roar in sport mode and is also a daily driver vehicle in eco mode. The Durango has incredible room for hauling stuff and family when needed and can be a muscle car also. The Durango is just the right size being not so huge and clumsy like some of the bigger SUVs, yet not so small like the compact ones. It is also a very exciting and fun vehicle to drive from the acceleration of the 5.7 liter Hemi, to the muscle car interior and styling. Give it a test drive!

Overall I have found the Dodge Durango R/T's a perfect fit. Original 2013 version had the V6 engine and I personally found it under powered. Within 6 months I traded it for a 2013 Durango R/T for the Hemi V8. Loved this car and had no problems at all over the 2 years I had it. The 2017 Durango R/T has been even better performance with the 8 speed transmission. Don't expect good town mileage, but highway mileage is in the mid 20 mpg.

I purchased my 2017 Dodge Durango 5 month ago and it has been in the shop 4 times for repairs. Getting ready to go in for the 5th repair. Very unreliable vehicle and definitely not worth the money. Chrysler is no help and dealership just keeps fixing it. Average MPG was reported to be 22 MPG, I get 18.5 MPG. At almost 3 miles per gallon less it averages out to be 15% less than advertised. **update-after this bad experience we dumped the lemon at an $8000 loss 😩😭

Company Leased SXT Love It

Company leased Durango V6 2 wheel drive base model. Has a few upgrades like heated seat, wheel, tow package and 2nd roe buckets. We had no input on options for this vehicle as the company picked it out. We have 5 in our fleet. Grateful to have such a nice vehicle to drive. Biggest pain is the auto stop start. You can turn it off but it must be turned off everytime you start the car. Has a small radio screen, which is part of the sxt package. Have not really had any major issues. 3 minor recalls no big deal. The rear racetrack light had a bad seal and had to be replaced out of warranty.$1,350 to replace, Enterprise lease paid for it. Overall love the vehicle. Getting around 22 mpg city 26 highway. Right now have 45k and had it about 1.7 years. Just replaced tires from Michelin to Cooper.Load lots of tools and material in back no issues. Very secure on the road and great ride. Would recommend over an Explorer or other suvs, lots of room inside.

Bought 2017 Dodge Durango in May 2019 and only had 30k miles on it. It has been in the shop three different time in seven months. First time in the shop was without car for two weeks. Three months later was back in the shop. Second time in the shop it took four weeks to get it fixed and back. Then two months later back in the shop for the third time. Keep telling me it’s an electronic issue but obviously three different places can’t fix the problem. Wish I would have never bought this vehicle. People warned about dodges but I didn’t listen because I liked the sporty look of this vehicle. Would never buy another dodge again!!!

After having the suv towed to the dealer, it turns out that the system update performed 2 days earlier, removed functionality from my suv!!! I only use this vehicle for towing. While hooking up or parking, I am in and out of the cab a lot. Mostly its moving the vehicle a few inches one way or the other - so I need a frame of reference on the ground - thus the open door!!!! Now the imperious Dodge brand has decided to remove the functionality I paid for!!! I can't wait to dump this suv! Chad was great taking care of the situation! I give Chad a 5! I give the Dodge corporation a 0!!! would be a minus if I could!

Great family SUV/Musclecar. I have enjoyed my 3 years with my Durango RT lease. I came from an Audi S4 and needed a little more room for my growing family. Having full time all wheel drive and snow tires was great for winter trips up to our ski house. My only wish was that the front seats were a little more comfortable, but other than that, I have fully enjoyed my time with the Durango. Other than oil change, tire rotations, I had no service issues with the car whatsoever.

I've always loved my old 2000 Durango and it was time to purchase a new one. After reviewing all mid-size SUVs I stayed with the Durango. It takes a little getting used to all the new technology but this is a lot of fun! I've read reviews due to the weight of the Durango acceleration was not that of other SUVs but I have not noticed and have no concerns. The comfort and spacious seats will not disappoint. Highly recommend!

I had a '98 for 12 years and regretted selling it and buying a chevy. I have the R/T with the 8 speed and 5.7 4-6-8 you can get 29 mpg if you keep the cruise on 55-60 traveling from Tampa to Jacksonville on Hwy 301. Just remember it take 89 octane!

Just bought it yesterday. We love it. Best riding vehicle I have ever had. My first car was a 1978 Chevy impala v8 and have been wanting to get back into a 8v engine. To me v8 are the only way to go. Love the front ventilated leather seats. Still reading the owners Manual to see all the great features it has In it. We have the tow package and it can tow about 7,500 pounds. The seats are extremely comfortable. Good sounding auto system. It should last 250,000 to 300,00 miles. Love the powerful hemi v8 engine. I give it 5 stars.

Car is like new. Has all the options of a brand new vehicle, without the new car price. Handles great in the snow.

I loved this vehicle when I first bought it used in 2020. It was 3 years old. It's now 6 years old and while it's been great with my 2 kids and 3 dogs for size, it's blown a head gasket. Our local mechanic said he's been seeing this a lot in this engine and to check the power train warranty. It's 5 years or 60K miles. This is 6 years old and at 80K miles I'm out $4400 to fix this. The market is INSANE right now with vehicle purchases but I'm going to start the search for a new one because of this is going to start breaking at 6 years old even with all the daily maintenance requirements I'm all set owning another Durango. I still owe a decent chunk of change on this as well and fearing how much more is going to start breaking on me. Beware of your warranty when purchasing this.

Very poor gas mileage. High road noise. Stiff ride. Not recommended at all. Lots of noise in the cabin. Subpar plasticky interior. There are much better SUVs out there like the Honda Pilot.

This is the biggest of the midsize crossovers on the market, with 3 rows of seats that actually have leg room for everyone and the base model has a powerful 3.6L engine rated for 5000 pounds of towing! The only thing that I miss with the SXT trim level is a power rear door. I thought it was a bit a of a luxury, however with so many stores offering curbside pickup this feature is more important than I once thought. Some people wait for you to open the liftgate, while others assume you will click the button to close the door as they walk away. The only thing worse than either of these scenarios are the people that don't realize their own brute force as they SLAM the door closed. The big plus with this vehicle though is drive most anywhere a truck would go without fear of getting stuck. The size of this SUV is more than most, making it a great choice for MN winters and unplowed roads. The AWD took me through 10" of snow without fail, the stereo was a joy to listen too and the sound deadening material in the body kept road noise to a minimum. I'm very happy with this ride and have been for over 72000 miles so far!

I'm still loving my 2017 Dodge Durango R/T. I've only got 70K miles, but I've had zero issues with it. It's still a powerhouse on the road, has all the bells and whistles I need, and is a mean machine (mine has the black top package and Beats audio...which doesn't exist anymore). I take VERY GOOD care of my vehicles and do not scrimp on basic maintenance. Oil changes every 3000+ miles, preventative maintenance, etc. Absolutely love this vehicle and am so sad Dodge is no longer making it.
