Do your homework before buying a 2015-2019 Suburba

2015 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 4dr SUV 4WD (5.3L 8cyl 6A)

I've owned 16 GM Tahoe/Yukon/Suburbans over the past 20 years as I worked for GM out of college. My current 2015 Suburban has been by far the least reliable vehicle I've ever owned of any make or model. The first issue was that the transmission won't shift into or out of 4 wheel drive when the temps is below freezing. This is major problem as I live in Boston and got a 4wd car for the winter snow. This problem has not been fixed and I've been told there is no way to fix it. So far the car has had eight recalls which is higher than any other car I've owned. In addition I've had to replace the alternator, both AC compressors, tailgate actuators, side mirror motors, airbag, ECU, and the power steering pump. The car is currently at the dealership and I've been told now the high pressure fuel pump, the strut mounts and all 4 struts need to be replaced. The total cost to all of these repairs to me excluding what was fixed under warranty is well over $15,000. There is no point arguing with GM at to whether this car is a lemon as all of these problems are well documented and know to GM. They simply refuse to recall them as it affects every one of the 2015 models made. Do yourself a favor and steer well clear of the current model Suburban.

Exterior design it's very bad

The old model was way better because the exterior design didn't have any removable applique in it , from 2015 though now GM changed the exterior design trying to make this vehicle look better yes it is looking better but it's a bull trash because if you buy this vehicle get ready after your warranty expires to spend money on it because the little peaces outside located exactly by the doors they giving a name ( applique) going to missing all the times when you're driving in windy season, they are 6 off them and cost $74 each just for the parts I called GM about that I talked to someone he said I'm sorry about that because your warranty just expired. Guess what buyers longest you have those vehicles get ready to spend money to replace new applique at least every 6 months

I bought a 2015 Chevrolet Suburban 2LT, used in 2017 with 17,000 miles on it. The car was nice and it seemed like a good deal at the time because the brand new ones were pushing $60,000-$70,000. The car seemed very nice until the a/c unit stopped working to which the dealer where I bought it said "a slight leak in the line we fixed it". This is interesting now because I took it in for regular service (free oil changes) and I asked them to top off the freon because the a/c was not blowing cold. The service advisor came out when the car was finished and said "it seems like one of the a/c lines is bad so I don't know how long this will last", and yet he still charged me $108.00 to refill the freon. When I had barely had the car 4 or 5 months the trim piece on one of the windows came loose and was getting worse by the day. The service advisor at the dealer flatly refused me on the chevy warranty and the extended warranty the con man up front sold me (which was also worthless). Luckily a deer ran into my side and while in the bodyshop they fixed all of these trim pieces called appliques' and I haven't had a problem since. I have experienced some of the other problems that have been reported here like wind noise and sometimes the engine does bog down searching for a gear which wasn't a big deal but is now. The biggest thing is that I tried to trade it this past June because of the 0% and the look of the new silverados but the chevy dealers I tried to deal with were giving me trade in values at around $20,000!!! I paid twice that for used and I understand that I will not get absolute top dollar for trade in but it could have been a lot closer. I was looking at another new car last January and I was given a trade offer of $28,000. which was much better and a lot closer to what I had in my mind. The car is beautiful and I really enjoy it and I have gone to great lengths to upgrade it and protect it(carwash memberships, weathertech mats and rain guards, hood protector). My most recent problem is rail dust rust spots. I only know this because I have a good friend that had the same thing on his 2015 Silverado. When a car is shipped by rail the hot steel wheels on steel rails cause hot particles to rise and embed in the clear coat on the vehicle. The friend had it repaired at the dealership for free. I didn't even know this was a thing until I searched it. I still love the car despite all of these things and the other things that make me nuts(the valve tick at idle, the faulty telemetrics, etc. The plan was to drive this for four more years until retirement as I believe it or not, commute with it(cruise control set at 74 mph gets me 19-20 average). Again, I love the car but not the build quality, the monstrous depreciation by giant chevy dealers, and the nit picky stuff too numerous to mention here. If I were to by another SUV of this size (which I wouldn't) It would probably be a Toyota Sequoia. I will likely buy a Toyota Tundra or Tacoma. I am a life long GM/Chevy man but this suburban has totally let me down and will likely be my last chevy. The wife just traded her Buick for a volvo and sooner or later I will trade this Chevy. I still have the car and I now have 110,000 miles on it and was ready to trade again and getting a much better trade in due to the used car shortages but I am again keeping it, maybe not til the wheels fall off but still definitely not buying another. The new suburbans are beautiful but way too expensive for me.

Nothing beats a Suburban for hauling lots of stuff

Our 78,000-mile 2015 Suburban LT continues to perform the tasks we bought it for without any issues. No repairs. We found an all black, leather interior, bench seat second row, LT - the bench seat is hard to find and much more useful. We move seven people, two dogs, and all the luggage for a holiday weekend 150 miles each way to the lake while getting 17-19 miles per gallon on the highway. This is our third Suburban and follows one Ford Expedition EL Limited. I liked the Ford but the redesigned-for-2015-Suburban rides better, is much quieter and gets much better gas mileage. The earlier Suburbans were very poorly designed and put together, very noisy (there must have been a time when Chevy thought owners WANTED to hear engine exhaust noise), and got 12-13 miles per gallon on the highway. It is amazing how much storage space is behind the third row seats when they are up. The quality of the leather is much better than before, and the seats are much more comfortable. GM has a hit with the driver's seat that vibrates different edges of the seat to let the driver know about proximity to objects and lane departure. Every steering wheel should put the heated wheel button on the wheel, but they don't. Cruise control is accurate and very easy to control with the left thumb on the steering wheel. The transition between 4-cylinder and 8-cylinder power is seamless and virtually undetectable unless you're looking at the information screen on the dash. One can't help but be aware of the many reported problems with 2015 Suburbans (even Consumer Reports finds great fault with them) but we have been lucky and love this vehicle. It is the Swiss Army Knife of family haulers.
