I couldn't resist 37K on a 2008 Impala back in 2017. I've driven it about 50K miles since then. Fuel economy is good for the size of the car. It is quiet inside and it rides smoothly. But I should have resisted the impulse to buy. The first problem was a coolant leak where heater hoses go to the heater core at the firewall. It cost hundreds. Then, the transmission started acting up. The colder the weather, the worse it is. Upon stopping at an intersection, it fails to properly engage first gear and does so with a jolt. It is intermittent and unpredictable - been doing it since about 60K. I spent $300 on a "fix" that lasted 3 weeks. Now they want another $1K. I'm not a fan. And, it gets worse. I had a 60,000 mile used transmission installed. Guess what? It had the same problem. It finally went to the dealer who changed the pressue sensor inside the transmission - for another $900. It is OK for now and I hope to get more miles out of the vehicle.

This car is a great value! If you need a car that's not too pricey but gives great gas mileage and low repair bills, this is for you! I bought this car in 2013 and have had NO major repairs. I do standard maintenance pretty religiously (oil changes every 4,000 miles) and just had the transmission serviced (flush/fill) at 120,000 miles. The body is holding up well (Wisconsin winters); and the trunk space is amazing (plus you can fold down the rear seats as well). I love this car!

The Best Year For An American Classic

2008 was the 50th Anniversary of the Impala, and as such, they seemed to feel and handle a bit better than older (and newer) model years of the same generation. Steering is accurate, it has power on demand when you need it, and the maintenance is fairly easy. For a car that'll get you places, this is a pretty good sleeper car that grandma and grandpa have in their 2-car garage. PROS: - Spacious interior with wood trim - Smooth drive - Reliable stability on slippery roads - Trunk space for all the groceries - East to navigate dash cluster - Speaker system is STILL amazing regardless of newer head units CONS: - Gaskets tend to fail after 60k, usually sooner (Oil Pan, Timing Cover, Trans. Pan, etc.) - Soft/Cushy suspension hinders performance on curvy roads - Fuel cap/Evap issues are fairly common among all model years - Cloth seats feel cheap and wear quickly over a couple years of use - Poor Fuel Economy despite other makes and models with 6 Cylinder options CONCLUSION: The 2008 Chevy Impala LS is a fairly reliable machine that will get you from point A to point B with some fun in between. It's nimble for someone who wants something with a little more pep, comfy for someone who wants a more smooth commute, and spacious for those who need to run groceries here and there. If you can manage to find one with less than 100k on the odometer, you've found a gem.
