I've fallen in love with this work horse

I bought this car cheap roughly 6 years ago with the intention of just using it for the snow. Now I don't think I ever want to trade it in. It's got 140k miles on it and the engine still purrs like a kitten. The interior is comfortable and the controls are simple (perfect!). Best of all: this thing is a god in the snow. For people looking for a great snow vehicle, you can't beat this suv. Nothing scares me while I'm driving this. I abuse this car massively - driving over curbs, off-roading, putting the "top heavy" feature to the test on these curvy roads, and treating it like my own personal toboggan in the snow. Did I mention it also has tons of space for hauling? Love love love it.

Literally drove through a blizzard.

I bought this Blazer in October of 2015, for $4k at a local used car joint, as is, with 89k miles. I bought it because it was a Chevy, it was cheap, it was built on a truck body, and it had real 4WD. It hasn't let me down. Since I bought it, I DID have to replace the master cylinder and I have a starter being shipped right now (she still runs reliably, the starter is just temperamental so I'll replace it for $45 brand new, no big deal). Both parts were cheap, because the Blazer is basically an S10/Astrovan, and parts are everywhere for it, which is part of why I bought it. I drive twenty miles to work, over mountains and hills in northeast Pennsylvania, rain or shine. I had a Nissan Maxima (which was equally awesome, if it was dry and sunny year round). I NEEDED something that could cart me to work in the winter, and I was NOT DISAPPOINTED. This January, we had a pretty massive Blizzard overnight into the next day. That morning at 6AM, I started driving to work in my Blazer. I couldn't see the road for all the snow, visibility was poor... I made it only 10 minutes later than usual. When 2pm rolled around and we closed early, I drove two coworkers home, and started my uphill trek home. I made the 25 minute drive in 45. I did not slide once. NOT ONCE. My husband's 2009 Silverado looked like a beached whale in comparison. He got stuck in the driveway, while my Blazer just crawled right through. This little thing is a BEAST. I've never felt so safe in a snow storm, and it was a literal BLIZZARD and I have horrifying anxiety. Sure, it's 12 years old. Sure, it looks like an S10. Sure, it's not that fancy. Sure, you might need a low cost part here and there. But, and this is a big but, if you want a cheap, reliable snow tank... buy a Blazer. I just wish Chevrolet hadn't given up on them, the world needs SUV built on truck bodies. And everyone complains about the gas... I fill up once a week maybe an extra $5 if I went above and beyond that week, but it uses about as much as my 6 cylinder Maxima did, slightly more. Mostly it seems as though they should have just made the tank itself a bit bigger. After having made my commute in my husband's Silverado, this thing might as well be a smart car lol.

Love our Blazer, it has survived: front collision, hitting a tree, then the tree falling on it, hulling trailer loads of wood, pulling rocks and stumps, getting stuck in the snow to the point the front bumper was ripped off. We have the opinion that you buy a vehicle to serve you and this SUV has taken everything we have had to offer just fine. After everything it is still our main vehicle 2 car seats fit pretty nice in the back (you can’t put the front seat all the way back). The interior doesn’t stain or scratch very easy. We do a lot of traveling and we feel very safe in it. We are excited to see how many Blazers make it well past 200,000 miles, we will be keeping ours.

A Well Proven Durable Truck based SUV

Garth, 07/12/2009
2004 Chevrolet Blazer LS 4WD 4dr SUV (4.3L 6cyl 4A)
13 of 13 people found this review helpful

Chevrolet based this compact SUV on their S10 pickup. This means that it is a truck based SUV which is some what of a rarity in today's world. The down side is that this adds weight but to me, I plan to own this truck for a long time and the frame offers some great jacking points. The power trane is based on the Chevrolet 350 V8 minus 2 cylinders so the basic design has millions of development miles under its belt. From a service stand point, the push rod motor eliminates the need to replace a cam belt which is an expensive requirement on many of its competitors. The automatic transmission offers electronic control which helps with drivability. The truck is a proven design which I prefer.

Took the SUV on a mountain road with lots of snow. We were the first ones on the road. It was awesome. The car climbed the steeps very well and did a u- turn with ease. One the way down, the car geared down low enough so we didn't even need to use our brakes. What a fun car.

This is the second Blazer that I have owned. I found them to be reliable, and easy to maintain. I have had no major repair work, in fact other than an alternator on the other Blazer after 150,000 miles. Currently other than tires and general maintenance (oil changes, tires, wipers, there are no problems. What a super truck.

ZR-2 is made for ANYTHING!

Whether its hot and humid or snowing inches at a time, the ZR-2 Blazer is made to have fun and look good doing it. After owning some jeeps here and there I found out that while the off road performance was outstanding the crudeness of the ON road and the lack of comfort and features was too much to stand. The ZR-2 offers the best of both worlds. While providing confidence on the trails, the interior and suspension will take care of you on the way there. The seats in the back can be set down allowing for huge cargo space...and as the owner of a English Mastiff...I need it. If your looking at a small, fun to drive SUV that will last a long time, the check out the ZR-2...I think you'll like it.

Good Value Especially When Used

This SUV is quiet and comfortable. The front bucket seats are soft and very comfortable. GM improved the engine design over the years and my 04 has port fuel injection which helps the throttle response and mileage. Power is adequate. The 4 speed auto tranny is well proven being developed in 1997. It has electronic control. I added a tranny oil cooler to extend life. The car has good visibility. I am impressed with the under carriage fiber glass covers, which will be useful for keeping snow off critical parts although they will not offer the protection of steel components. The Billstein shocks are outstanding! Front brakes with ceramic pads and dual piston nice with ABS! Average stereo. Buy!!

There is a reason that the 04 Chevy Blazer is affordable and that is due to the reliability of it. The style remains unchanged as you are unable to tell an 04 from a 2000. I've had to put brakes numerous times, ball joints, engine sensor (2x), oil coil line, smell on anti freeze despite no leaks, leak on driver side floor. In addition the 4WD switch went out and apparently that is fairly common as well. I perform regular maintenance but after purchasing in 06 with 25K miles on it, I have estimated that I have put close to $3000 in repairs, parts, and labor. That is conservative. The trade in value is horrible and I will need to keep it until the last loan payment to get money in trade

Having owned my 2000 4 door Blazer for a year, I have been pleasantly suprised. The build quality was better than the many GM vehicles I had previously owned. The ride is comfortable, and doesn't jar you, as a truck ride usually will. The interior build qualitly is good, if not a little drab in monotone grey.

I don't agree with anything less than this vehicle being a great value for the money, compared to all the other SUV's. It has great ground clearance, smooth running engine, reasonable fuel economy, and general overall quality. I didn't purchase the leather interior, but am happy with the cloth interior. I prefer the 4 door version as it has a longer wheelbase that contributes to a nicer ride. I am not a SUV owner that doesn't need off-road capability, as most owners are. I use my Blazer in the Mountains of the Northwest and it has never let me down.

Its the perfect size for someone like me afraid of bigger SUVs (for now anyway). Its very hip and stylish inside and out. I got a great deal on it. Like I said i have never driven a Chevy but i am confident in thier quality and dependability. I am a happy Blazer owner and would serioulsy recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for a fun and reliable suv.

The ZR2 suspension is the best I have used from a stock SUV. The vehicle has a slight tendency to oversteer on gravel or snow, but the base width lets you carry the slide an recover easily. The mileage for an SUV is average and the interior has some cheaply made plastic moldings, but just look at the exterior style. It is a great looking SUV. The 190 horses from the 4.3l V6 is not the greatest derived power from a modern internal comb. engine, but the gear ratio provides some awsome torque. For a 4850 lb vehicle it can pull just 150 lbs under its gross weight.

If you do the service when its supposed to be done then your blazer will last forever. For all you Blazer owners, just remeber these few words. Respect the Blazer. They have been making these great vehicles for about 50 years. Treat it like you would treat your child. I wash mine 4 days a week. bring it to the park 2 days a week. when she needs love i give it to her. she treats me well so I treat her well. she is my pride and joy.

I have been a Jeep Cherokee owner for years, multiple Jeeps. Never owned a Chevy in my life, my family drives nothing but Chevy. I Decided to test drive the Blazer on a whim. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It's a very comfortable car, handles very well. Much smoother than my Cherokees ever where. Drove it on vacation right away; great space & gas-on the highway and in the city. Then when you consider the savings on price, it was a no brainer, you save a bundle just for staying out of the popularity SUV race. (unless you want to impress people with paying more, that's another issue).

I got this truck almost 2 years ago and am still in love with it. I normally wouldn't buy a Chevy, but was taken by a black Trailblazer with chrome rims, on the car lot. I thought I was going to end up with it, but it drove like a station wagon (yuk)and was very uncomfortable. I took the Blazer ZR2 out and knew instantly it was the truck for me. This is a TOUGH truck! It is an absolute beast in the snow/rain. It's one of the pricier vehicles I've had, at $32,000. Sometimes I'm even shocked at the price when I think about this little American made truck, but it's definitely been well worth it.

I purchased and as I was leaving the lot I found out it had no power! (windows, seats, doors)Cost $32,000. I had to have the brakes replaced at 1000 miles they were all rusted out. The rear seat I was told seats 3 accross. It seats 3 very small adults squished. It would seat 2 adults across. It has many blind spots, this surprised me because of how high it sits. It handles well on snow/ice in 4wd. this is not a on the fly switch however.

Since I got this vehicle I have loved it and have treated it with tremendous care. The 4.3L MFI V6 has a lot of power on tap, and the overdrive kicks in at just the right time to save me some gas money. It is a great highway cruiser, and the exhaust note is great. There are tons of aftermarket parts for this vehicle. I have installed a Flowmaster 40 Series Delta Flow exhaust system, and it sounds great with the already good exhaust not of the 4.3.

With the Factory 3" lift and 3" wider wheelbase, the ZR2 is the most stable SUV, that I have ever driven. The Chev Blazer ZR2 is a total fun SUV to drive !

Excellent off the pavement. The lockup rear differential is a nice touch. Goes great on snow and ice, as well as mud. Good low end power for off road or towing at average hiway speeds. Top end is a little week, but will do in most cases. On the road, it's a bit average. Handles ok, nothing to bragg about. Some body roll. Mileage is average, for a large V6 4WD, at 15mpg or better in town. Style is good. The ZR2 anyway. Interior is comfortable for anyone under 6'1". Build quality could be better. Mostly solid except for some interior parts. Overall I'd give it a 7.5 rating. Mainly for it's 4WD capabilities.

I love my Blazer. The ride is comfortable but not too soft. The engine is strong and has power to spare in about any situation. It will turn on a dime and parking is a breeze. It has a lot of hidden features you don't know about until you have driven it a few days. It isn't a family car but it's great for two people. It's a nice in between vehicle. Somewhere between a utility vehicle like a Jeep and midsize family SUV. To compare this with mini SUV's is unfair because really it's in a class of is own.

This was the second blazer for me and i can't be more pleased. It has the power to pull my boat yet i get high teens in town and hit 26 when kept at 65 mph on high way.I still find them very nice looking.I think the door hingesneed improvement.

I've had the SUV over six months and have no problems with it. I wish the fuel economy was better but other than that it has been a good vehicle.

I own a solid black 2004 Blazer,I traded in a 1987 blazer. You just can't kill them!! i have owned it since Jan. and have had absolutly no problems with it,not even in the breaking in period. The ride is very good,it has great pick- up...It wants to go,,your doing 70 and don't even know it!!

I made a haste decision to purchase this vehicle because of the rebates being offered and the fact that I really wanted an SUV. I wish I would've look harder and weighed my options more before purchasing. It is not a vehicle I see myself in long term.
