Outstanding mechanical quality
We have owned this van since it was new on '94 and it just passed it's 19th birthday, has 288,000 miles, original engine and drive train. We have pulled camper trailers in 40+ states plus a couple of states without a camper. Only a few drips of oil and still getting just shy of sticker mileage. Too bad they quit making them. Only in the past year did it pop any rust holes but living in the upper Midwest that is fantastic too. Sold the Astro in fall of 2013, didn't need the larger size any longer but do miss it's versatility.

'94 Astro is Tough
I've had mine for about 70,000 miles now and only had a couple of significant problems: idler arms, and fuel injection needed repair. Neither left us stranded. It's got lots of room and from what I've seen, they'll run forever. Get a tranny cooler if you tow, or live in a hot climate.

Love our 1994 Chevy Astro
We purchased our van from family, its been in our family since 1995. Our van has over 330,000 Km on it and we love it. So many of our friends want us to buy new cars like them, these are the same friends who call us when their new cars need towed home when they break down. We love our old van, even with the rust.
Buy an Astro
My mechanic recommended an Astro to me and he did not steer me wrong. My van has been great, dependable easy to work on and easy to find parts. Good quality interior that stood up to being a true soccer team vehicle. 220,000 miles on the original engine and tranny and both still sound great. Plus with the seats out you can put a 4x8 sheet of plywood in the back.
Please Die, I wan't a newer one!
Bought because kids were fighting in car and needed more cargo space. Will tow anything, have taken seats out and put a cord of firewood, 30 sheets of plywood, dirtbikes, snowblower, appliances, you name it for the cottage. Will get 25 mpg at 60mph, one set of tires, brakes, shocks, and a muffler in 70,000 miles. Started outright dying on me 3 years ago, (got very excited) but only turned out to be a $11 pulse generator in the distributor. Sounds like a stagecoach on rough roads. I am trying to kill it by not changing the oil, 20,000 miles have gone by, why won't it die? I really wan't to buy a newer AWD model, but this one is worth nothing to trade in.I would buy again in a heartbeat!
Awesome Van!
This is my 2nd Astro both have been great! This one now has 200,000 miles and going strong. Typical minor repairs have been done over the years. Nothing out of the ordinary. Hubby's NEW car has had more repairs in 1yr than mine has had in 5! I get great mileage too on this van. about 24 on the highway 19 in town.
Astro Review
purchased as a used vehicle and we love it for family trips, roomy and entertainment for the kids. reliable vehicle. no major problems
It's a truck not a Car-a-van
Bought used from Dealer and have never regretted it. The 93's rattle here and there and have a stiff truck like ride, but we wanted and got a solid Chevy truck, not a wimpy half breed Car-a- van. When you need the power with the 4.3 it will put you back against the seat. Great for towing a boat and utility trailer. This year we changed the original fuel filter and battery. Replaced exhaust once and had new brakes and shocks 2 years ago. That's it. Still gets close to 25 mpg on freeway @ 60 and on cruise. 147,000 miles and going strong. Wouldn't be surprised to see her top 250 before it's ready to scrap heap. We love our Astro!
Fine van
I rescued this astro van ext from the yard of my neighbor after he died. It was not driven for three years. I replaced two freeze plugs changed the oil cleaned her up and put it on the road. It drives and handles great. Here's the kicker, it has 260,956 miles and can out run my 1993 Toyota corolla. I love this van.
Best vehicle I've ever owned!
We purchased our Astro in 2000 because we needed the extra room for our family. This vehicle has been abused in every sense of the word. We have 8 children, so there is little time to worry about vehicle maintainence. The van has responded beautifully to every chore we have thrown at it. I have moved our entire home furnishings three times as well as towed more weight than should ever be attempted. We have had to replace the fuel pump, water pump, and a starter. We now have over 220,000 miles on the original drivetrain and it still is going strong.
We got you beat!!!
The short story is We have 211,000 miles on our van. I have put in little more than a battery, ignition module, and front bushing. Less than $1,000.00 has been invested and she is still strong.
The Astroid
I have the 92 astro that me and everyone I work with the "ASTROID" this thing has been in the shop so many times after it hit 120K miles its not worth owning any more. The A/C went out, cruise, doesnt work, and the brakes are very sensitive. The brakes are horrible, when applying the brakes its like theres air bubbles in the brake lines because its not a smooth stop. The only good thing is the good gas mileage and the fine tuned stereo. It's had an oil change at 3,000miles and whenever it needs serviced.
Excellent
I have drove ths van for 10 years and have never had any maintance but normal oil change, tires. Was extremely impressed when I recently was in an accident with the front end and also rear-ended. Strenght of van saved my life in the 50 mph crash. Front end tore off but barely into radiator. Highly recommand this vehicle in every way!
ASTROSMASH
PURCHASED I OWNER ASTRO W/50000 PUT 110000 ON IT SINCE NEVER A MAJOR PROBLEM JUST BRAKES TIRES AND FLUID DID ONE COMPLETE TUNE UP AT 100000 RUNS GREAT CARRIES HEAVY LOADS W/ EASE
whats this
I have had this vehicle for 4 years and there was only 1 owner before me. I have really enjoyed this vehicle and had little trouble with it.
hard to service
to change spark plugs pull tires off for 2 ,then two through hood, 2 through inside engine hood. mechanics hate them because you cant get to any thing on the engine,150 dollars for labor to put manifold gasket in.doesnt have half the passing power of my 6 cylinder dodge caravan.would never purchase another one
Best Vehicle Ever Owned
This little truck has 165,000 now and the only major money ever spent was when the A/C went out (while towing a U-haul). All I have ever had to do is regular oil changes and maintenance. Dependable to a fault. This truck made 10 trips hauling trailers between Atlanta and New Orleans after Katrina. My house was a total loss but the Astro was something I could depend on. Unless you have ever been in that position, you have no idea how important such dependability is. I would strike out across country in this without a worry. I will keep this until the wheels fall off...and then buy new wheels.
its just great.
My family has had this car for 9 years and its been nothing less than great. We have taken many long trips with it and it has never failed even with 135,000 miles on it, its just excellent.
Old Bertha's still going
We have had Bertha for eight years. She has hauled, kids, dogs, lumber, trash and everything in between without complaint. She has over 170000 miles on her. We plan to keep her till the wheels fall off.
93 chevy astro
As you can tell from the milage this van did not set in the repair shop often. This has been a car I could always count on and gives me 21 miles to the gallon on the hiway. I know that's hard to believe but I custom ordered it with a towing package and a lower ratio rear end with positraction. living in western new york (Buffalo) I have never gotten stuck in the snow.
Great Grocery Getter
My Astro has been a great vehicle. Other than the idler arms needing replacement at 50k miles (typical for that vehicle), the only major repair was an alternator at 80k. With 105k on it now and no rust, it still looks and drives wonderfully. I've had the carpet covered since it was new so you'd never know this van was 10 years old.
Solid powertrain / Weak electrical
This Van has never left me stranded. I played in a band and used this vehicle to tow 4000lbs of equipment for 40,000 miles. Ive had to replace the AC compressor because of GM's poor quality. The electrical system is now going a little haywire and the plastic AC vents break easy. The rearview mirror falls off every winter. Some of the power locks will not lock.
mulitple problems
Absolutely no leg room for the front seat passanger. The wipers had several problems mostly stemming from cold solder joints on the control board.(this is a $45 fix from the dealer if you change it yourself) The AC fan switch is under-rated for the blower and burns out often. There is also a check valve for the AC system that plugs up about as often and causes the AC to blow out the heater vent when accelerating or driving above 55 MPH. I have also found out that the front seats do not provide enough back and shoulder support on long trips and there is a sharp edge under the front seat foam that will eventually cut a hole in the driver and front passanger seats.
Astro Wagon : Reliable and Strong
I bought my Astro LT Wagon new, and have accumulated over 133,000 miles to date. No engine or transmission troubles, no air conditioning problems, only a power window motor and wiper relay have failed in service. This is a great work record, for a reliable and strong van. Plenty of 4.3 V-6 Power for any driving condition too!
Reliable large capacity minivan
AWD extended minivan which has served well hauling kids and dogs on short and long trips and moving furniture in all types of weather. Well powered, Construction is solid. Good sound system and interior quality. No mechanical problems at all in 130,000 miles.
Solid rig, no problems at 200K
Runs like a top at 200k. Everything works and is original. Original motor, running gear and transmission all quiet and strong. Even the flimsy exterior handles are okay.
DON'T DO IT!
Terrible terrible terrible! Wish I'd researched a little more before purchasing! Granted, a 1993 can't be expected to be stellar. That said, I didn't know a used car could be this awful! My Subaru with 260,000 miles has always run like a champ with routine oil changes and a few small things here and there, so I assumed I would be as lucky with this van. Not so! It only has 140,000 miles, purchased with 133,000. I've already put thousands into it and just trying to get rid of it now.
