Could have really been great
Good: 1. It was pretty fast for such a big car (Used to laugh at civic SI's) 2. Got pretty good MPG at 23MPG all around and over 30MPG on the highway if you kept your foot out of it 3. The bench seats are awesome 4. Enough room to fit all your friends in the back seat.. (And it they pissed you off, they could all fit in the trunk on the way back) 5. It gives you a very protected safe feeling 6. Hitting huge pot-holes feels like running over gravel Now.. Why it got such a bad number of stars.. 1. I bought the car used; it had 68K miles on it. 2. The car started to have over heating issues.. I replaced the radiator with a triple core aluminum dragster radiator off of a chevy dragster. The Thermostat didn't circulate the coolant until it was too late, which at 236 degree's for the system to start to circulate is what caused the issues with the head gaskets on these cars. Pulling the Thermostat and buying one made for a different engine (shortstar) and using that one with a bypass on the two 26K CFM fans cured the overheating issues. (NOTE: you can't do the head-gaskets on the 98-02 Northstar, since the head is structural and the engine will warp when you pull the heads.. Entire engine must be replaced) 3. When it rained the tail lights didn't work 4. The alarm would randomly go off. 5. Replaced the power window motors with other Cadillac ones, Twice, before using Toyota Camry one's modified to work in the caddy frames. 6. Dealership wanted to charge me 150.00 for Windshield washer blades.. (Are they high?) 7. Exhaust rotted off the bottom of the car (Stainless isn't a choice on a 40+K dollar car?) (No matter though some Super40 flowmasters and two 3-1/2in chrome tips sounded great) 8. quality of the interior materials are made from cheaper plastics than rubber maid garbage cans. 9. car had electrical issues, and eventually randomly caught fire. (Ironically after the fire department put it out, all it took was some new ignition wires and it started right back up. ) Verdict: These cars can be fantastic cars for people who have some automotive repair skills, they are also fantastic cars for people who live in area's where there isn't heavy traffic. If you live in the middle of mid-town Manhattan, look for a Fleetwood, which while these look alike the fleetwood LT1 is a much better engine. If you however are stuck on one of these for whatever reason.. Keep an open eye for coolant leaks, oil leaks, transmission slips, and mostly overheating. Have the person start and run the car, wait for the coolant fans to kick in before you buy one. Most of these cars are marketed at needing a "head gasket" however, you can't replace the head gasket on the 98-00 Northstar, the head is a structural part, and pulling it will warp the block, which will result in leaking head gaskets as well as other issues. If you find one without the over heating issue, replace the thermostat with a lower temp thermostat immediately, and replace the coolant fan switch with a manual, or adjustable one, choosing to kick on the fans at a much cooler temp (201 vs 236). Doing this will enable you to have a car that will get you around at a very low price.

Dream ride
Have owned for 10 yrs, now at 100,000 miles it still runs and looks like new. Never had a major issue with this car, it's never left me stranded and always starts right up. Everything still works! Can't understand why everyone knocks American car quality!
1999 Cadillac D'Elegance
Bought in 2011 with 92k miles, had to have new front struts put on by dealer. Now at 120k miles, I have had to put new radiator fans, new radiator as fans ruined the radiator, torque converter, TPS sensor, a blower motor which took a week to get a 5 bolt since most are 3 bolt and just recently a water pump. All are expensive to fix. Good running car, but like everyone says, they can be expensive to fix. If you buy one used, make sure you like the car and have some money set aside to fix them. Watch your selling price, weak resale value for a Cadillac. Heated seats don't work. Had to convert rear suspension
What a deal!
I have two Deville D'elegance Cadillacs, one a 98 and the other a 99. I purchased the 99 with 89k and owner though engine head gasket was blown, tested engine, nothing wrong but the thermostat was rusted shut. New thermo, flush and coolant and it runs perfect, better than my 98 and it only has 65k, I can not explain it, the 99 engine is smoother and more powerful. I would recomend these cars to only someone who is willing to spend money if something goes wrong, its worth every penny when you compare it to modern cars at 50 plus thousand dollars.
I love it
For a car that's 10 years old it still turns heads. I did my research on the northstar before i bought it and heard nothing but horror stories. but at 143,000 miles it runs perfect. it runs so good i wonder if the engine or trans has been rebuilt.but with the high mileage I'm prepared for something to go wrong.
the true american luxury automobile
i recently purchased this 1999 deville concours with 73000 mi on it so far it is a blast to drive and very comfortable and quiet,i have driven mb's,lexus, infinity and bmers this car is equal to and even surpasses them as far as build, fit and finish and ride and performance this is the true american luxury automobile. i am sold and a convert from foriegn to american congrats cadillac.
Snowplow Caddy
I drive 80 miles round trip daily to work. I live in northern Maine, 2 hours north of Bangor, me. I've had to plow my way out of my driveway, and out of 2 other roads (2 miles) before I got to main road, at 3:30am. Sometimes i had to plow the main road for miles before it was plowed going through 1 to 2 ft. Drifts. That car never faltered once! I' driven through countless blizzards! That car is the most reliable car I've ever driven. The front wheel drive along with the heavy v8 northstar engine gave the car unbelievable traction. I never worried about being stuck in snow or heavy slush. It was safe consistent and dependable. If I hit a moose it would land on the hood and not on me. Car is bigger than moose!
Never Again
Bought this car in May of 2007 with 53,000 miles on it, and it has been trouble ever since. First power window motors went out. Second crank seal caused oil leak (At 62,000 miles). During repairs mechanic forgot to put a latch on the right front passenger wheel causing me to lose a wheel (Thankfully) in a garage. Dealership would not refund me the money of the repairs even though they were dangerously done. Now the car is in the shop due to two blown head gaskets. Cadillac Customer Service department is not willing to help out with anything.
Black Beauty
Pros: handles well and is a comfortable drive. Holds its shine very well. Very little engine maintenance required. Cons: side mirror too small when merging into traffic (especially in a construction zone). Power windows failed during hot weather. Automatic Antenna motor broke.
Too many repairs
4 motors in 2 years under normal driving conditions. They always ran hot and burned up. The car is great. The engine is worthless.

MY CADDY
I have bought this car last year. It is fun to drive and has good acceleration, save me gas. The only thing I ahve done to it is is fix the fuel pressure other than that just its regular oil change. This is the best car I had have in my whole life its smooth driving all the way. If I would of traded I will traded for a newer model, but I don't think I will sell it its my baby and I love it all the way.
Caddylicious
What a great car! I bought the 50th Anniversary Gold Package Edition 1999 Cadillac DeVille on Ebay recently and its a real head-turner. Not to mention the air-ride, lotsa room, a REAL trunk, power everything, comfort and the ride, ride, ride! I've had new Lexi, a few BMWs and Mercedes and its ride is head and shoulders above all of them put together. OK, it doesn't corner like the overpriced German junk or go 160 mph, and although the Japanese have most of it right they just don't seem to have it as good as the Caddys. I have a Corvette or two and its funny how when I get in the 1999 Caddy I start to drive real slow! It must be my way of enjoying the phenominal ride! Grab one up if you can!
Why buy japenese
Reliability has been a real problem, but than the dealer's service has been less than perfect. I have had to analyze two out of three problems for the service writer before they could fix the proble. Required a return each time. From a taillight causing a short, to winshield washers not covering full windshield, then an oil leak caused the engine to be pulled. Second leak, noise now from engine (valve rattle?). Forgot to hook up washer tank, anther return. If you are going to buy a cadillac buy two cause one will always be in the garage for service. My Lexus has been in for oil changes only.
Great Used Choice
I picked this car up as a lease return. I bought it instead of a new vehicle of another model and now I understand why Cadillac is the number one American Luxury Car. My car is used primarily for pleasure trip and aome short trips around town, but at 3 years old it still turns heads and gets compliments everywhere we go. I am sold on driving a Caddy and the dealerships sales and service have been outstanding. I am treated just as if I was the first owner who purchased it new.
Luv my Caddy
I needed a car with some good comforts for traveling as I drive long distance about 8 hours a day, 3 times a week. I had been driving other cars and noticed how stiff I was after getting out of the car. When I first got my Cadillac I noticed that my back no longer hurt. Oh what a relief, that alone was well worth me getting this car. I am looking forward to my next Cadillac.
Worst Car Ever
Bought the car with 90,000 miles on the odometer in 2006. Had major problems with multiple systems within 1500 miles of purchase. A/C non-functional. Overheating constantly. Electrical system had major flaws. Took it to dealer for repair, they advised me to dump the car, they could not provide any assurance that they could fix all the problems satisfactorily. WORST CAR EVER - RUN, Do not just walk away from any GM product.
Who's your Caddy?
This is the 3rd pre-owned Cadillac I've had the pleasure to purchase, and they just keep getting better. I traded up from a '95 Concours to a '99 DeVille and now to a '99 Concours. As with most vehicles, the older the car the more likely issues come up, and Cadillacs are no exception. The '95 was on the verge of becoming unreliable, which I attribute to a faulty fuel injector and a starter that had an intermittent issue and would on occasion not function. The '99 Deville was (is) a beauty, until it got hit by an idiot running a red light and totaled by the insurance company. I used the funds to purchase the '99 Concours, and after replacing a malfunctioning alternator it runs & drives like new
Used Concours
I bought my 1999 Cadillac DeVille Concours in Reno, Nevada. It was a trust car before being traded in. It had 77,000 miles and now has 120,000. I have not had no problems except with a constant SES sign but the Cadillac forum tells me don't worry about it. It is a comfortable ride and a pleasure to drive on long trips. The only problem I will fix in the future is the oil leak that according to the Cadillac forum most Northstar engines have. I have changed the oil regularly, but have experienced no other real problems that have hindered my enjoyment of this vehicle.
4 Year '99 DeVille Owner
The high pressure power steering hose began to leak at ~77,000 miles. Also, the plastic dash top vent is warping due to heat damage from the sun. This has been a great all weather Colorado car. Each time (four to my recollection) I was pulled over for a driving infraction the officer had issued only warnings...never a ticket! All of the gadgets work perfectly. My wife complained that she slid about in the passenger seat. Also, I ran out of gas twice because the digital gas gauge begins to accelerate usage feedback the closer it gets from two gallons left in the tank.
Caddie Review
This has been an excellent automobile for us. Most impressive of all its attributes are its safety features. We came round a corner and almost had a head-on collision with a semi. And the Deville reacted perfectly. Braking, steering, and suspension all functioned superbly as we had to leave the road through a dirt/gravel turnout. Slowed the car to a stop, changed underwear, and continued on our trip. Never thought much about safety before. Always think of it now.
Great Car
I have owned this car for nine years. It has had A/C problems and the usual "service soon" light coming on frequently. Other than the usual replacement of belt/hoses, brakes. This is my 'baby' and still gives me a smoother ride than my new 2006 Caddy. Still has good pickup and I get 27-28 mpg on the highway..
99 Deville
In my opinion the 1999 DeVille is one of the best Cadillacs ever made. The comfort of its ride is surpassed by none. It has plenty of horsepower to float down the highway. The interior is full of gadgets and comfort. Need I say more?
Good car when new, but it's falling apart
Bought the car new in November 1998. It was great for about 7 years/50,000 miles then started leaking coolant. 16.5 years/135,000 miles into its life it overheats going 15 miles down the road. Happily traded it in a few days ago for a new Prius. Cadillacs seem to be great when new but don't stick around for the duration. Northstar engines are economical and powerful but have issues...done with Cadillac
I Feel Lucky
I bought this car because it had low milege and I was able to buy it very cheap because it was already 11 years old. I am sooo glad I found it. It rides like a new one. I have had it 2 years and I know it only has 60,000 miles on it but I can not say one thing negative about it. The power is wonderful, the traction is tops. The gas milege isn't even bad for it's model and size. The paint job is a beaut. It gleams! Thank you Cadillac!
Lemon
Got this car for my wife and ended up with a boat load of problems. At 157,000 The passenger side CV Axle, Left Front Bearing & Driver's side Hub Assembly, Heater Core and sensors showing probloem with Torte Converter Lock-up and Fuel Level Sensor. My advice stay away from this money pit.
Miss this car Already
I loved the design of the Cadillac DeVille since it came out. It is a large sedan and looks like a Cadillac, not some scaled down "whatever" style that they've come out with since. It provides elegance and comfort for the 50+ crowd - we are the "market" not the kids who can't afford a Caddy anyway. You are losing your market and don't know why? This car caresses the owner and gives max flash for your cash. Isn't that the point? Just bring back fins and no-draft windows and we'll all be happy. So sorry you don't care anymore, but this one was a WINNER!
This car is junk
This car has been nothing but problems. Odometer now reads 94K. Replaced AC system, radiator, thermostat, hoses, coolant reservoir. The fan for the heat and A/C has a mind of its own and usually decides not to operate. The driver's seat cushioning and leather surface has failed, needed complete seat re-conditioning. One quart of oil every 1000 miles. GM should be embarassed about the quality of fit and finsih on the car interior. The carraige roof rattles above 65 mph. The antenna motor has failed. Must carry replacement bulbs. I strongly advise anyone considering this car to proceed with caution. There is nothing about this car that would encourage me to consider purchasing a General Motors car ever again.
THIS IS THE BEST CAR
I bought this car in November 1998. It has 66000 miles on it. It also includes the 50th anniversary edition package. This package includes white diamond paint, elegant chrome wheels and sewn in 50th anniversary in the seats. This car is a fully loaded vehicle even if you buy it standard. Most have heated seats, lumbar support, and massagers.

lemon from the beginning. Poor quality in assembly, poor dealer support, in fact dealer support borders on legal theft. attitude of customer NO service deplorable. Very uncomfortable for extended trips
my ;'99Caddie
overall I liked the car But the vibration and hard suspension was wearing. Drive 900 miles and you are exhausted. My '93 Cad. drove like a dream I could drive 1000 miles and get out and still be able to walk! This one -forget it! I'm exhausted! The road control is not as good as the '93. More swerve on curves. I had A/C problems that my dealer was not able to correct purchased the car from. problem I now After $859.00 I still have a car that misses or a bad transmission. I love the space this car has but don't like the dealer I have and he is the only one in 50 miles. The Cdillac deVille is not the car it once was. I've owned 3.
Dream Ride
I have owned this car almost 9 years and it has been a great car to drive. At 62,000 miles new head gasket, transm. 70,000, other then that no problems. Other then usual wear and tear. Vehicle is clean, get's 18 miles in town, & around 28 on the HW. Everything works fine. Vogue tires with 6/32 on front and 7/32 on rear tires. Driven mostly on HW, Paint has great glow, garage kept, and had paint protection done first 5 years. Most driving done with other car in the city.
Fine design - but Premium Fuel
I inherited this car and while it wouldn't have been a car I would buy personally, I found it a definite pleasure to drive. The leather and power seats were comfortable to my sore back. The front passenger amenities were 1st class. Driving conservatively gave 28 mpg highway. As a touring car, the quiet smooth ride delivers an elegant driving experience.
Three years of Joy
I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed this car. I'm six feet tall and long waisted so the head room was one of the great features. The ease of driving and ride are also very good. It is the only car that I am comfortable in on a trip. I've had three back operations and still can sit with ease when I drive. I get 26 mpg highway miles and 16 in the city. My wife's 2005 PT Cruser does't get that.
hard to beat
The northstar engine is like a modified rocket! This car has performance like you would not believe. If you do not like to creep while going onto a highway ramp and waiting for a large gap to appear, this car will get you in traffic and merged in a split second. Enough about the engine, my car is fully digital, telephone, handsfree phone, heated seats/mirrors, great stereo, lumbar, passenger side mirror tilt, rag top, vogue tires and memory package. Easy handling at low and high speeds in turns. Car does not move much with high cross winds. Ample leg room for four 300+ men. I could go on and on, but i'll stop here.
clear
My 1999 cadillac deville has been great. It is loaded has 60,000 miles. it is the best car you can buy. Great car for anyone who wants luxury.
Buy Junk? Buy car from r kitchen!
No lemon here. White Diamond with excellent looks and great performance for us 40+ somethings in the world. Still like the de Ville for sure. Would love to have more time on my warranty, as I only have 25000 miles on the car!!! And I bought the certified extended warranty!!! Every forty something should have one!
Our '99 DeVille
Driving the Cadillac DeVille is great. We took it to Tennessee in Dec. '05 and I couldn't be happier with it. It has plenty of room, is quiet and has an awesome engine! For a heavy car it really runs. I like how the power takes you over hills with the cruise on and only slows down a mph or so. Its fuel mileage was right at 26 mpg, now that's good. My only complaint really is mine has no OnStar, and the stereo isn't luxury car material in my opinion.
My Caddy
I bought the Std version. I got fed up because the dealer either made a mistake or scammed me telling me it's a Concours (not an official GM/Cadillac dealer), but a Caddy is a Caddy and it is a dream.I bought it for $6900 CANADIAN (at the time i bought it it was worth 10,000 US). On my first drive from the dealership I had to go on the hectic and jammed 401 on a snowy november night, and it felt like I was driving in my neibourhood on a sunny day in may. I was amazed by the performance. I mainly drive on highways and at one time it gave me 28 miles to the gallon, that's pretty impressive for a 4-ton Cadillac running on a 4 and a half liter Northstar engine.
Love this car - fun to drive.
This is my 8th Cadillac and it drives like a dream and has lots of reserve power. At regular town speeds the Northstar engine purrs but out on the highway, when I need to pass someone - it roars. This car is like a computer on wheels with everything automated for the driver's comfort. Just set it and forget it. The driver's manual is a bit complicated but GM also provides a "short-cut" manual with the car for people who don't like to read a novel. Everyone who rides in this car says it's a "dream car" to own.
I currently own three
I currently own 3 all purchased on ebay, 2002, 2006, 2008. Only one has the need for a qt of oil every 1000 miles. Two of the three the drivers power window went, the power antenna went and the air conditioner compressor on one went at 160,000 miles. I use regular gas and get the fuel injectors cleaned for twenty dollars at Wal-mart. Get 17 to 28 mpg.avg 20. Two of the three have Michelin tires and get a great quite ride. Cheap tires effect the ride. Had one since 2002 drove 70,000 miles without ANY repairs other than window, brakes and now the AC. You can get a great car, great ride for under 5000 in 2008 dollars. My son is 22 and he likes it better than his brothers Audi. will go 200,000+mi
'99 deville concourse
This car is a dream! Rides like a big car, handles like a mid-size. Great engine,...never a problem.
Thought I was too young for a Caddy
I LOVE THIS CAR! At 38 yrs, I loved my Volvo Turbo, but at 137K miles, it was time to move on. In search of a luxury SUV I could afford, I stumbled upon a Cadillac lot and this DeVille just seemed to call my name. I drove it, and bought it. No regrets. Great city ride, great highway ride, great country roads ride.
99 Deville
One of the better Caddys I have had since a 1979. Forget the 80's they didn't happen. I like the performance and style. At least you know it's a caddy from the rear i.e tailights! I had a few problems with engine mount bolt and oil leak, but the warranty covered it. Emissions service I feel should not be an issue with under 50,000 miles. Michelin tires and brakes all made 55-60 thousand miles. Not a bad vehicle for the money. Took a few long Hwy trips 25mpg at 70 plus mphr Great ride.
This is one... Nasty Momma !
This car... "is all that" in the styling department! the new models don't talk to me per say. This beautiful "Guppy" says CADILLAC! all over it, from it's rear tail fins to it's bold front finders! The new DeVilles simpley lack the Caddy ID And the sad part about it, on the 2000 and up models, the rear view of the car at dust to evening at a "glance" says Cadillac until they mash the brakes...then "it's all over" We forty and up like a Mature, Bold, Sassy look, Like a fine wine. Crisp, Delicate, yet STRONG! Oh and by the way the performance speaks for it's self! "Simpley CADILLAC"!(Grrrrrr)
LOVE THE CADDY
GREAT CAR AND GREAT SERVICE THEY TREAT YOU LIKE A KING WHEN YOU NEED SERVICE AND IT RARELY NEED SERVICE
All beauty and nothing else
There is no doubt this car is beautiful, comfortable and can blow the doors of most other cars, but it is the most unreliable car I have ever owned. The eternal "service Engine Soon" light is annoying. It constantly needs sensors and things to be replaced only to have engine light come back on in a month or 2. I also don't understand how a modern car today can burn up so much oil. What does it do with it? It also is absoultly terrible for winter driving. Step on the brakes on a snow covered road and it turns sideways every time. The traction control on a FWD is useless. Trading in for an 05 Grand Marquis. Had a 94 Town Car previously never had any major problems in 6 yrs.
Beautiful but disappointing
No doubt this Deville is gorgeous, fast and comfortable, but it would have been better if it was RWD. It is absolutely horrible for winter driving. It turns sideways when brakes are applied on snow cover roads. I can't figure out why it guzzles so much oil. The eternal "service engine soon" light is annoying. There is constantly some part that needs to be replace to make the engine light go out for a few weeks, then its right back on again. I'm sorry to say it, but I have a love/ hate relationship with this car.
What A Pain To Fix
The fan blower needed replaced, the North Star uses 1QT of oil every 1000 miles!! It is not burned or leaked out, Cold AC blowes out driver vents and extreme heat on passenger side!! Dealer cant find anything wrong?? Read a review where the rear axel can need $1500 in repairs at 65000, In turnes the wheel shudders, drifts on road from power shifts between front wheels, passenger side air-bag was recalled because of unintentional discharges, radio reception is terrible, GM should have gotten all of the problems worked out of this car before the 1999 end of production for this style. I know now why they changed!!!!!!!!!!!!!
