Excellent
Spent a lot of time researching smaller sporty high end SUV. Never owned a BMW before. Coming from an Acura RDX. The X1 is excellent. Drives like a sports car especially in Sport mode. Perfect size. Somehow Smaller than competition on outside but much bigger on the inside. Surprising how much room on the inside. Car is comfortable well appointed. Was headed for a bad collision and had to slam on break and jerk the wheel hard right then left. The X1 held steady with no skid or even a lean. Amazing. Shopped around and got the car with a lot of upgrades for under 39k. I have 5k miles and averaging about 28mpg as I use eco drive for long drives on highway.

Safety concerns
Just picked up my BMW X1 which has the M sport package. Although the detail inside looks very nice, my vehicle has a highly reflective chrome panel on the dashboard. During daytime and especially during sunny days this chrome strip is reflected on both side mirrors which makes it difficult to see anything other than this strip in the side mirror. Only way to see through the drivers side mirror is to put my hand against the side window to block out the reflection from this strip. I really feel this is utterly bad design which is a fairly serious safety concern.

still the best small SUV for some situations
Plus - peppy, agile, good interior space for this class of vehicle. 70" width makes for easy parking. Negative - Expensive - Some safety features only in top trim. Not the best MPG considering it needs premium gas. BMW long term reliability means you should lease v buy, but lease deals are fairly aggressive.

Best in Class - Perfect for the tech geek
I agree with Edmunds review of the x1. I drove all the competition in this class (Mercedes, Audi, Lexus & BMW) and the x1 checks all the boxes. Tons of extra high-tech goodies that you’ll be discovering long after you’ve taken one home. I agree with the mild noise and ride comfort issues, but the other manufacturers had the same issue, and the Mercedes GLA was much worse. We’ve had the x1 for for just over a month and are very happy with our choice. Shout-out for the totally wireless Apple Car Play that was not available in this class from any other luxury manufacturer - it sealed the deal.

Great performance, worst seats
High- great BMW styling; LED headlights; exceeds estimated mpg; handles like a sports car even in econo mode; generous cargo space. Lows- seats are very hard, worst BMW seats I've ever had; lacking BSM safety feature; braking not as good as previous X1 models; no Android compatibility.

My first BMW...loving it!
I’ve had my new 2020 X1 for a month. It is everything I was hoping for and much more. Clearly the best vehicle I have owned. I am a very satisfied customer! Thank you, BMW!

Great car
A year later: same review. Great car, balky pairing with car play. has been greatly improved with expensive software updates from bmw. I would say now that the Infotainment, although a bit strange design, is essentially functional and useful. We bought our X1 5/2023, 32K miles, certified pre owned and are super satisfied with this vehicle. Fun to drive, useful cargo space, great in cities for parking, looks good.

The performance is not as good as Honda lx.
It is just BMW name and faster acceleration, but not a good control.

Fun Car
It drives like a charm and handles easily. Looking forward to taking it on a road trip.
Great ride...but a few misses
My X1 is 2 1/2 years old and in general, I'm very satisfied with it. It still bothers me that it did not come with either blindspot monitoring on the side view mirrors or rear cross traffic alert for the camera, which was very surprising. I replaced the original run-flat tires with standard UHP tires and a tire repair kit for a much smoother ride. Just noticed that the cargo area light does not have an on-off switch which would have been preferred.

Lots for the Money
Like all of the tech offered inside, love the two tone interior color. I would have liked to have the blink spot detector but not offered. First time driving the AWD on icy roads and handled quit well!

Cheap
This car is noisy cheaply built terrible ride 34,000 mi breaks and tires needed to be changed I would give it minus one star that's how bad this car is because of this car I will never go to BMW again it rides like a Nissan Altima every single bump you can feel extremely uncomfortable when I complain to the dealer that the seats and the steering wheel does not get hot enough they tell me people complain and they have lawsuits against them that's why it does not heat up like an Audi or a Lexus give me a break

BMW X1
Love this suv so far! Perfect size for me, I am 5’0 female so if you’re on the petite side but still want an suv this car is for you! Got the convenience package that comes with a lot of upgraded features, so being an X1 it still is very nice. Smooth ride & amazing gas mileage!
Much better than expected
I was on the fence about purchasing a smaller SUV. I am a BMW sedan owner and have been for a few decades. BMW is my choice. I even tried out other vehicles, but none of them compaired the BMW. So back to the X1. I gave it a go on a test drive, I also drove one for a few days as a loaner car as my 330 was being serviced by the dealer. The X1 had all the nuances that I expected, blew away the others in acceleration and handling. I was worried about the room in the back seat. As i sat in the back seat, I was amazed, absolutely amazed. It has so much room , more than I expected. Plenty of head room , hip , shoulder, and leg room. I am able to get golf clubs in , tennis ball machine , art work , and more in the cargo area with the back seat down. Perfect in a compact SUV. I was delighted with everything about my X1. All wheel drive is phenomenal on turns and gravel roads, not to mention in snow. A great fit for me. UPDATE: Ok , I have had my BMW X1 X drive since 2021. I got a great deal on the X1. I was looking for a bronco sport , but was not going to pay $4000.00 over sticker for one. " No Way ! ". I negotiated with BMW and received a great deal , being a current owner of a 330i. I got an incentive from BMW. I was a bit amprenhensive about the size. I dont need a big vehicle , it is just me. I am retired and not carrying around a family. Plus I have another BMW in the drive ay. I was pleased with the seating in the front and back. The rear cargo area is ample, with a bonus smugglers compartment where a spare tire used to be. RF Tires , dont need a spare. Also you can lay down the back seat for more room. The X1 has some get up and go. In sport mode it gets it. Handling , nothing like a BMW. I have had 12 of them so far and never have been dissapointed. But.......... This is the first X1 I purchased. BTY : I leased the other ones for 3 years. The X1 I purchased. BMW has a message center to remind you of your maintenance on the vehicle. Around 32000 miles my brake message came on. the app said rear pad brake replacement. I know the pads are softer than most other vehicles and the stop the vehicle a few inches sooner. I called the BMW dealer and had them done for $526.00. I now have 70,076 miles on my X1 and the brake message came on again. I have to have this done again. I found out the rear pads are thinner than the front and will wear out sooner. You would think BMW would make these pads thicker. I am not real happy wityh this. Other brands that I have purchased in the past, Lincoln ( had 6 of them ) Audi ( had 3 of them ), Ford ( had 23 of them ) Porshe ( had 1 , lots of maintenance requirements ). I always got 60 to 75 thousand miles on the brakes . ( except for the Porsche ). I am easy on the brakes. So you see why this is something I do not understand with BMW. It is such an easy fix. I love my BMW's don't get me wrong. I do expect a higher cost of maintenance on a BMW. But a brake change in less than 30,000 miles from the first one ???? This will not prevent me from purchasing another one, just beware of this rear brake situation.

Nice design
Overall the 2021 X1 was smooth. Had decent tech and good performance. The moon roof feature is very attractive as well. My only draw back is that it could have a bit more space in the trunk. Perhaps the X3 would checks that box for a higher price.
Smooth ride
This car drive smooth and still has the get up and go when you give it the gas. Lots of luxeries and comforts of a high priced car. I would recommend to anyone looking for a sporty luxery car

Wish I would have read reviews before I purchased!
Likes- size, style, heated seats and steering wheel are great, rear cargo space is unique and more than you would expect, good gas mileage Dislikes- Here we go... Seats are not as comfortable as I would hope in a luxury vehicle Requires mid-grade gas (my bank account hates this one) Oil changes are super pricey Back seat is difficult to exit due to the rear wheel well Center console may as well not exist, it's TINY If you don't read the manual, you won't even know that you have a heated steering wheel (the control is in a odd place) THE CUP HOLDERS!!!!- They are in the most ridiculous spot (under the a/c controls). If you have a tall cup or bottle, you have to tilt it to get it in and out of the cup holder. I know to some people this may seem trivial, but I spend a lot of time on the road and now look at cup holders in every vehicle wondering why BMW made the decision to make them so inconvenient.

UPDATE: Purchased a 2020 BMW X1
Using the Edmunds site I was able to compare makes, model, features over several years for several makes. I was in no hurry to purchase a car and found just the car I wanted with a greater ice for my trade in. (More than the purchase price).

Poorly executed vehicle
Awful. The brakes are non-linear. They present a soft pedal and then grab hard and abruptly. The transmission engages roughly from a stop. The engine restarts roughly after automatically stopping at places like stoplights. The navigation system refuses to reroute the trip when you clearly chose another route. Instead it bitches at you to do a U-turn at every opportunity until you reach your destination or shut it off. Just a week earlier I had rented a Malibu (not my 1st choice). Surprisingly, this BMW was inferior to the Chevy.
