If the standard 8 Series is too pedestrian for you, BMW has the more extreme M8 variant. Offered in coupe, convertible and four-door Gran Coupe (reviewed separately) body styles, the 2025 BMW M8 is the brand's flagship performance model. As such, it packs a prodigious amount of horsepower and torque, along with BMW's latest and greatest tech features. Since 2022, the BMW M8 has been offered exclusively in Competition trim. That package endows every model with 617 horsepower and a host of performance goodies, including an M Sport exhaust system, Track drive mode and performance-oriented adaptive suspension. In our opinion, the decision to only sell the most potent version of the M8 was a good one. In testing, an M8 Competition coupe rocketed from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and handled impressively well for a car its size. Despite all this power, it's easy to drive around town and offers exceptional ride comfort.

The 2025 BMW M8 competes with other flagship coupes and convertibles, including the Lexus LC, Mercedes-AMG SL and Porsche 911. The LC isn't as quick as the M8 but rivals the BMW in comfort and style. The SL is only available as a drop-top and is smaller than the M8, but the AMG SL 63 trim gives it a run for its money when it comes to performance. How does the BMW M8 drive? In our testing of an M8 Competition coupe, we recorded 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds and the quarter mile in 11.2 seconds at 125 mph. There's so much power. The brakes feel equally potent and stopped our car in 106 feet from 60 mph. They're also easy and smooth around town. This is a larger and heavier car than most in its class, but you wouldn't know it from these numbers.

The M8 delivers surprisingly agile handling, tracking through curves with a high amount of grip and confidence. The steering doesn't have quite the engagement of other sports cars of this ilk, but the M8 is responsive and it goes where you point it. When you're not trying to blast into orbit, the M8's effortless power and smooth-shifting transmission feel simply luxurious. So does the shockingly good ride, which proves BMW knows how to balance performance and comfort.

Visibility is hampered by thick pillars that can impede your view through left turns and when looking over your shoulder. At least there's a 360-degree camera system with a high-res screen. Other driver assistance tech is OK for the segment, with a solid adaptive cruise control system that boasts hands-free capability at speeds lower than 40 mph.

How comfortable is the BMW M8? Getting in and out of the front seats is easy except in tight parking spots due to the M8's long doors. It's challenging to access the rear seat, but that's typical for a two-plus-two coupe. There's an abundance of space for front occupants plus plenty of adjustment range for the driver.

The rear seats aren't very spacious or comfy, but they're still a lot better than others in this class. Car seat accommodation is not surprisingly quite limited, too, but at least the anchors are relatively easy to access.

The interior controls benefit from a variety of redundant input options: touchscreen, rotary controller, voice commands and even gesture controls. We wish the menu structure was a bit more coherent, but in general, there's less of a learning curve than in some more recently introduced luxury vehicles.

In-cabin tech

How’s the tech? The infotainment system features a crisp, responsive screen and multiple means of controlling the system. That includes voice controls, which are quite accurate, but because they're cloud-based, they can be slow to respond. There are two USB-C ports up front plus a standard wireless charging pad. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wireless.

How’s storage and cargo? Compared to the typical exotic, the M8 has a good amount of storage. It's a larger coupe for this class so there's just more interior space to start. The trunk's wide opening and low liftover height are nice, but the inside area narrows quite a bit between the rear suspension. Still, the seats fold down close to flat to help accommodate longer items.

Small-item storage space isn't abundant, but there's a small console in front of the cupholders, a nice-size armrest bin and glovebox, and decent-size door pockets.

Is the BMW M8 a good value? Every penny you spend on an M8 seems justified. It has superb build quality and has more to offer for the price. For instance, the M8 Competition is comparable to a Porsche 911 GT3 Touring but has more usable interior room and more luxury per dollar.

BMW's warranty and ownership perks are average for a luxury vehicle. Basic and powertrain warranties are for four years/50,000 miles and roadside assistance runs for four years. BMW also provides complimentary maintenance for three years/36,000 miles.

How’s the fuel economy? The M8 Competition coupe is EPA-estimated to get 17 mpg in combined driving (15 city/22 highway). This is respectable for the class. Admittedly, owners of these vehicles aren't likely to be too concerned with fuel efficiency.

During our 115-mile evaluation route, which covers highways, mountain roads and city streets, we were shocked to get 23 mpg. During our two weeks with the M8, we were able to average 17.2 mpg. That easily matches the EPA estimate, and we'd like to note that the onboard fuel computer was pretty close to our calculations.
