I have had my X1 for 2 months and love it. I like driving smaller cars but I wanted easy access and storage. I was debating on going with the CRV or the CX5 however when I compared the refinement and drive there was only one clear choice. I only have a few items I wish BMW would adjust, more safety features available (blind spot), standard LED headlights, add 1/2 inch to an inch to the seat bottoms, and easier option selections.

I wanted a small SUV. I test drove the Jaguar F-Pace, the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Evoque. I was completely UNDER whelmed by all three. Especially considering the price tag on those vehicles. I went and had lunch then decided to stop by my local BMW dealership, BMW of Mobile, AL. After explaining what I wanted to fit my needs, they suggested I test drive the X1. Before I got off the lot, I knew that was the car for me. Plus my 15 yr old son commented that the back seats had way more leg room then any of the other three cars mentioned. It is so much fun to drive. I love the control the front wheel drive gives around corners and driving in rain (we get a lot of rain). I have the upgraded driver assist package and love the LED lights at night that turn with the car. It gives me extra visibility during deer season. Mine came equipped with the sport seats which are extremely comfortable. I will also mention that the sun roof is fully operable. The other three cars mentioned only come with moon roofs - no fresh air on nice days. The interior is sleek and modern with LED lighting (can change red or clear) on the trim. Easy phone integration for bluetooth and connecting to Spotify for music. The best bonus - I am averaging 28.4 miles per gallon. I encourage anyone that is looking for a small SUV to test drive the X1 before you buy. This car has it all - Sporty and sleek modern luxury.

Researched and drove CRV, Tuareg, Escape, GLA, Q3. No comparison. The fit, finish of the cabin and exterior are flawless. It's fun to drive, has an insanely small turning radius and scoots around the city effortlessly. Have been driving for 3 months and love every minute. It's comfortable for my family, easy in and out, good on gas mileage, has a lot of great utility and storage and the 2018 looks great and sporty vs 1st generation which looked a bit odd.

Bought a CPO X1 after test driving majority of the available small SUVs on the market, both luxury and mainstream. Wanted a vehicle that was entertaining to drive, had good sound system, easy to use infotainment, Apple Carplay, decent room, and basic crash avoidance features. Chose the X1 due to its large cargo hold (fits golf bag without taking out driver), driving dynamics, fuel economy, and electronics. My second choice was a Golf GTI, which I also loved. This vehicle drives more like a lifted hatchback than an SUV. After 3 months of ownership, these are my thoughts. Way more affordable than one would have thought. I bought a well optioned vehicle with 11k miles on the odometer (service loaner) for at least 5-7k less than a comparably equipped CRV, Tiguan, or GTI. Likes: Great daily driver, fun enough and nimble. Stable at high speed on freeway, and easy to manage in tight quarters. Transmission is well matched to engine and there is no torque steer. Averaging 28 mpg in mixed driving, pretty good for the way I drive. Can use midgrade gas 89 octane if you are looking to save on fuel. Always get at least 400 miles to a tank and can stretch it to 500 if highway driving which is nice. Love the view out of the front windshield, it is wide and clear like a minivan, much better view than out of many comparable vehicles, and way better than your average car these days. Electronics/infotainment are really pretty good once you figure them out. You can program the preset buttons on the dash for just about anything, for example my preset 1 is set to navigate home. Preset 8 is for tone adjustment. If you forget, you just hover your finger over the button and it will tell you what is set up for. Take advantage of the BMW Encore program and they will help you figure it all out. Can set up memory settings for multiple drivers, etc. Back seats are very roomy given the size of the vehicle. Apple Carplay is free on this model year, but not the 2019 where you have to pay a yearly subscription. There is an active X1 forum where owners share their experiences, common fixes, etc. Love the heads up display of driving speed, speed limit, navigation directions. HiFi Sound system is good enough for me, although their are plug and play aftermarket upgrades if that is your thing. Interior is nice in my opinion. I prefer a clean, stark presentation over ridiculous contours and curves. Cool ambient lighting feature that you can configure however you like. Way too early, but mine has been trouble free. Many complaints about narrow seats from others, but they are comfortable for me at 160 lbs. Dislikes: louder than I would like, although much of the noise can be attributed to the run flat tires. At first I thought that I would dump the run flats for conventional tires, but now I am thinking that I will keep them. Reassuring to know you won't be stuck on the side of the road in bad weather or bad neighborhood. No blind spot warning. I don't rely on this feature, but am surprised that it is unavailable.

My wife has a 2016 X1 x series and loves it. This 2018 s series is great. Ride is tolerable, not the smoothest, acceleration is great, but you get the BMW ultimate driving experience. I recommend ordering the sport seats, which we fortunately got with the car, the sliding rear seats ($300) and the LED lighting. There is not the high level of standard offerings like the X3 or X5 but there is a price point. Wish BMW offered more choices for ambient lighting as only red-orange and white is available, X3 and up offer many more color options. Can't complain as I got great deal on SAV, better than Honda or Subaru Touring models. Check summer offerings....

I cant express how much I love my 2018 X1 !! It drives fantastic and has the get up and GO I appreciate! Its very park friendly as well as family friendly! I am a short lady and it fits me perfectly. My husband is 6'4 and fits nicely into the drivers seat for long(7 hour)drives. Its sporty,practical and fun to drive! I have recieived many compliments in parking lots about my mineral gray X1. I couldn't be happier. BMW has checked ALL the boxes with a great looking,fun to drive, affordable SAV! Thank you BMW! I am a fan for life!

Sorry to return this car at the end of the lease. It was the perfect multi-purpose vehicle, surprisingly spacious and fun to drive (328 engine). This is a sweet spot in the BMW product line. We fit 4 adults + 2 70lb labradors in the trunk and added a trailer hitch for a 4 bike Thule rack. Clean off the mud and it’s fun to drive in sport mode. Enjoy driving these as much as the v8 turbo and straight 6 turbo BMWs we have owned.

I was looking at other reviews and can kind of agree on the tires. I had a horrible accident with my x1 ended up being a total loss and believe it could of been due to the tires. So that is why I’m not sure on my rating Regardless of the accident part, this car right away all the airbags popped out from the sides to the front and thank god protected me. A super cool feature was when I got in the accident with my x1 the cars computer communicated with a 911 dispatcher!!! Awesome experience from a bad moment.

A lot of fun to drive around town or on windy roads. Turbo has quick power and gas mileage is great also. Interior very rich and refined. It is a pleasant change from a regular car. It is stylish, plenty of cargo space and very roomy interior. I like the orange ambient lighting but agree with a previous owner more available colors would have been nice other than white. The maintenance warranty at 10,000 miles did not cover rotating the tires which I thought was kind of cheap for a classy BMW. Also I guess they reprogrammed the computer and the monitor does not turn off like it did before I took it in for maintenance. No big deal. The automatic tailgate open with the foot took some getting use to but after realizing it was how fast you brought your foot back and not kicking it under the SUV it became easier. I like the extra storage under the cargo floor too. Nice place to keep jumper cables and tool box out of sight. Overall, I am extremely pleased with my new SAV, SUV, whatever!

It’s one vehicle for city driving and a completely different vehicle on the highway. In the city, my X1 is comfortable, quiet, handles exceptionally well, has a great steering radius and is easy to drive. Over sixty-five mph, the vehicle skitches and requires constant steering to maintain a straight path. The road noise at high speeds is almost unbearable and makes it difficult to carry on a conversation, listen to music, podcasts, audio books, etc. Backseat passengers end up yelling in order to be heard. My ears ring after a highway trip as if I had been in a noisy factory or loud concert. It’s got 20k miles and I’m ready for another vehicle. . . and it won’t be a beemer!

Entering a stereotypical male mid-life crisis, it was time for some major car- (and soul-) searching, whereby I decided to replace my incumbent car, a 2-door Honda Accord, with something equally sporty... and to satisfy that crisis knowing that my first replacement choice (a Mustang!) wasn't going to be practical given my town's winters and my uh..potential future responsibilities. So I ventured for a sporty compact AWD crossover -- with a badge even better than the Mustang's. After a pathological amount of online research, the X1 fit my bill. As a major mid-life crisis plus, it sits lower to the ground than its competitors (I shafted the otherwise much faster and sportier Acura RDX because it made me feel like a complete soccer dad). As far as price, the sticker might shock you when you try and equip it with Honda/Acura-spec tech, but unlike the former, BMW offers massive incentives which saved me more than 20% the price of the vehicle. Handling, gas mileage, and acceleration are all similar to or better than my old 4-cylinder Accord. The only thing I miss is the fact I went from a midsize (borderline large) car into a subcompact - You can feel the squeeze into the smaller seats, but that comes with the territory of owning a Bimmer without breaking the bank (or for that matter, feeling like a soccer dad).

I've owned my new 2018 X1 for exactly one month. I basically enjoy it, however the first week I got a very bad burn on my leg from the exhaust pipe as I was trying to place items in my trunk. Additionally the bumper get extremely hot, as if there is an over heating issue. Needless to say as a result of the burn and overheating I am taking my one month old car into the dealer tomorrow to check on this problem. Overall I enjoy my car, and hope the check up will reveal the origination of the overheating issues.

I came from being a Mercedes Benz owner to leasing a BMW. I never once had one issue with my MB. Since starting my lease with a brand new BMW X1 I have had issue after issue and the BMW Service department can never find anything wrong. However my trunk opens by itself all the time (just happened again yesterday). Also sometimes the car makes noises that aren't normal. It seems to be falling apart at less than 9,000 miles. The BMW brand logo on the FRONT of the suv is also chipping away. Wow I am sooooo disappointed in this piece of junk. I have called the BMW service department and have been called back saying they would do something but then never heard anything else. Its been over a week and I called again and was taken to voicemail, left a message and .......still guess what .....never was called back. I think they are worried about letting me out of my lease BUT all I want is a car that works!

Nice to drive,especially the turbo boost.Bells and whistles are way to access.One drawback is the Sensatec seats get uncomfortable on long drives.

I bought my X1 new in 2018 and have not regretted it I’m the least. It’s sporty, yet useful with the back storage area. Turns corners great and has the “sport” feature to give driving a fun boost. Sound system is awesome. Gas mileage is consistent with other cars in its class and driving in eco-pro mode helps even more. I can’t think of anything bad to say about the BMW X1.

My 2 versions of the 2nd generation of this style have been a pleasure to drive. Both have been X drives. Great mileage on the highway (34-36mpg), City not so great (lots of stop and go in San Francisco). Only complaint is road noise. Hard to hear radio in not smooth surface. Forums indicate changing tires can help. I will likely get the 2022, but research type of tires - even if it means no run-flats.

It drives great. I love that I can change from Eco, Comfort, and Sport mode. The car sits up high so I have a fairly good view of all the road even though I'm fairly short. Perfect compact SUV!

I have had Lexus and Audi and have never had a vehicle this bad. Leased new and had numerous rotor , brake and wheel bearing issues that BMW can not fix. Also Bluetooth on their entertainment system is garbage and doesn’t work. The customer service is also horrible and unprofessional from corporate.

My fully tuned 2016 3 series sedan was getting high in mileage, I loved everything about that car, from the fit, to the throaty exhaust, the speed, and of course how all BMW vehicles feel like a literal extension of your body. As sad as i was to do so, i decided to trade it in. First, I went to Land Rover/Jaguar, and ended up buying a fully loaded 2019 FPace. It was nice, the luxury features inside made me feel very bougey, until they started to fail, and that didnt take long. ALL the electronics gave out within the first 3 or 4 days and I brought it back. The dealer then put me in the fully loaded 2024 evoque, and wow that felt nice. Luxury feel throughout. But... With both those vehicles it felt like something was missing. There was an older BMW X1 that had just landed on the lot and I brought the Evoque back and test drove that. As soon as i sat down in the (far less) luxury BMW, i knew this was the car I wanted. Before i even left the parking lot, I knew this was the one i wanted. Yes, it didnt have all the bells and whistles like the bigger x5, the evoque or f pace, but the difference in drive was immediately apparent. Responsive, tight turning radius, the steering wheel had the perfect level of feedback and the 12 way driver and passenger seat molded perfectly to me. And... its zippy. Maybe not as quick as the sedan, but this car lives at 140, effortlessly. In fact i drove this x1 all the way across USA and Canada nonstop, twice at an average speed of 110mph, or around 180km/h, averaging at around 700km/tank (or around 5.5l/100km and never once felt driving fatigue or had any issues. BMW knows how to do cars right. I think the biggest thing most people will think when buying a bmw is maintenance, but as long as you dont buy parts from the dealership and do all the proper maintenance (3rd party bmw mechanics are true enthusiasts who know BMW better than dealership mechanics) you will be fine. ie: MAF from BMW 800$. The same part number not branded with bmw at any other store, 30$. ive been thinking about tuning this car aswell, but honestly, it is almost a complete package and doesnt really need it. This is a perfect grocery getter, long distance travel car, short run vacationer, everyday ride that will keep you happy. The b48 engine is legendary. truly.

Went from a smooth riding Lexus sedan to X1 and I love it. Call it mid-life crisis or whatever...but wanted to drive a fun, sportier car with cargo room and decided on the BMW X1 after researching several other cars in this class. The interior is roomy enough, cargo space is great and I love that it"s not bulky like many other SUV's. Has great power and handles well. One con, if you want to call it a con - the hands free entry is a bit slow to react compared to the Lexus, but I'm sure I'll get used to it - only had it for 2 weeks. All in all, a really cool SUV!

Excellent purchase experience at the dealership set high expectations for the vehicle. So far, so good, after only two months. Ideal town car for my driving needs. Visually attractive exterior and interior. Very smart design. Very satisfied and looking forward to many years with this vehicle.

I have a 2017 X1 sDrive28i and it has been the worst BMW I have ever owned. It has spent more time in the BMW service department than I have actually driven it. I have had constant problems, the brakes have been replaced FOUR times and it still doesn't qualify under CA State lemon laws. So many recalls, insufficient power if u need it, IT IS FRONT WHEEL DRIVE, WHICH IS AWFUL (<I>unless you get the AWD version</I>). The Goodyear RunFlat tires wear out extremely too fast, had to replace mine at 23K miles out of 50K they are guaranteed for. There are way too many rattles, creaks and a lot of interior materials are very cheap quality; the suspension is showing signs of being a 10 year old car, not a 2 year old one. The brake calipers are rusted (<i>after 11K miles, and I live in CA where it doesn't rain and no harsh environmental conditions like back east</i>) <b>and BMW will not cover them under the factory warranty</b> (<i>which should be due to the low quality material they are that makes them rust so fast</i>). I have ultimately concluded that if I had to get another one, or recommend this model to anyone, I WOULDN'T. <b>I am so unhappy with it.</b> It has been so frustrating to own, the worst BMW I have ever had (<I>I have had 5 before this one, all 3 series</I>). BMW needed to work out all the bugs - this is the 2nd year of this body style - so I thought they had. Every single person I see at My BMW Center who owns an X1 agree with me: the X1 is a great temporary loaner vehicle when your BMW is being serviced, but NEVER to own yourself. The X1 ages and wears out absolutely way too quickly. <b>Avoid the X1 at all costs.</b> Thank god I leased mine - <b>cannot wait to get out of it!!!!</b>

Now one-year old with only 3500 miles (I don't like driving the car), the X1 drives very skittish, perhaps due to the short wheel base. Every bump on the road is felt (even in comfort mode). Going around corners throws the driver around in seat. Acceleration from a standing stop is unfortunately rabbit-like, and stopping is too sharp rather than a softer touch. There is too much of a "mommy" in the in-cabiin warnings, because you are constantly reminded do this or do that that really gets on my nerves. I suppose constant warnings are a result of BMW wanting to save their bacon by alerting you to every little thing. Resetting the low-tire warning is a pain (i.e. takes multiple steps). I could go on, but in short the car is an overpriced vehicle. (And expensive to repair - did I mention $500 and 1/2 day to put in a new battery? Fortunately it was in warranty.)

Fantastic small SUV that's fun to drive. We bought in Germany w/a large discount and free shipping to the US offered- it was too much to pass up. Dealer provided $600 in gifts and 1 yr Sirius radio for free. Used the heated seats and heated steering well extensively in Germany and now in the US. Nav system is terrific, although was expensive to load the US maps once we returned to the US. Very comfortable on long trips, love the ambient lighting, sun roof, and safety features. Only "complaint" is gas MPG isn't great- mid 20's around town and max 29-31 MPG on the hiway w/89+ octane fuel. As a US MX clerk said, "you don't buy these cars for gas mileage". A keeper for years.

The overall package seems promising a smaller SUV package that works for people that don’t like big cars(me). Pro: Smaller but with good features, sharper handling than most SUVs, okay-ish mpg, AWD capability, maintenance won’t break your bank. Con: rebadged Mini reliability(not too great), mini parts in a bigger car means more wear/maintenance(especially breaks, tires, etc), bad engine mount design, overwhelming BMW electronic/sensor comes with cost and time when dealing with, electrical problems come and go with no reason. Smaller backseat and room than a similar size sedan.

BMW has gone in the direction of high reliability with this car. The B46 engine is derived from its partnership with Toyota to build the Toyota Supra. I understand Toyota worked with BMW to create a smooth, reliable engine. Even the transmission is a Japanese Aisin. The drivetrain has been bullet proof and still feels new. The X1 is fun to drive, light and agile. We see 9.1 liters/ 100 km fuel consumption in our driving which I consider economical. In Canada the X1 is the only model in the X line that is German made. In the 100k we only needed to replace the front brake pads, and spark plugs. I also did oil changes, a coolant change and spraying valve cleaner. I used a coding service to add Carplay to the Connected Drive media system. This integrated perfectly. This has been an excellent car to own. The design is exceptional inside and out - the 2018 design cues were a high water mark for the X1. The equipment the X1 came with gave impressive comfort and performance that has held up well over 5 years. My wife still loves driving it. Her only issue is the visibility in the rear view mirror. The 2019 X1 went heavier on driver assist features to help.

I bought mine brand new and it has 10,000 miles. The crazy part is I already had to change new tires after 10,000 miles! The Pirelli P7 CINTURATO P7 ALL SEASON RUN FLAT - SIZE: 225/50R17 that came from the factory do not have any warranty and I was shocked that they told me I have to replace mine after 10,000 miles. Also the backup camera is constantly not working, I suspect it has to do with Apple Car Play compatibility. The dealership cannot do much to fix the problem. The drive is rather rough but I suspect that's just how it is with a mini SUV. Overall I don't recommend it as it has too many problems for a brand new car and the ride is not great.

I have owned this car for a week and have a bit of buyer's remorse. I test drove the car but not for long enough. It seemed fine on a short drive but the model I bought can be described as stiff and hard to steer. It has 220 horsepower but it sure doesn't feel that powerful because it is not smooth or responsive. Should have held out for the new Audi Q3 that is coming out this fall. Maybe I need to break it in more but wish I had shopped around more and not have relied so much on the reviews.

Only one possible problem is size. Have to work a bit to get 4 adults comfortably in auto.
