M5 vs. M3

I traded my 2002 M3 conv. for a 2003 M5 and I've never been happier! Why did I do this - I don't like the new "5" styling and I wanted to own one of the last true great BMW's. What a car! I've owned everything from Cobras, Shelby GT 500s, turbo Porsches, Corvettes including the ZR-1 and other fine, go- fast vehicles but quite honestly, this is the best car I've ever owned!

M5 Satisfaction

The E39 version of the M5 handles and performs superbly. Though it is no longer the "king of sedans" when it comes to horsepower (its successor has that title), it is one of the best car designs of all times. Many BMW enthusiast prefer its design (manual 6 speed and exterior styling) to the newer (more potent) M5.

E39 M5 The Ultimate Sedan

I owned a 2001 540i Sport 6 Spd and a 2003 M3 when I test drove a 2003 M5. I was instantly hooked. I searched and found one of the last remaining new 03s in CA. I have had the car for 3 yrs and it is the ultimate balance of performance, handling, comfort, reliability, and craftmanship. Furthermore, considering it is a 400 HP, 4000 lb sedan it is remarkably fuel efficient. I have averaged 21.5 MPG over the past 3yrs w/30K miles in mixed Bay Area driving. If you are looking for a remarkable automobile don't hesitate. You can pick up an immaculate and low mileage 2003 M5 for < $50K. This is a no brainer considering this is less than a new 530i or 335i. I have driven both and it is no contest.

If you want only one car...

The M5 concept isn't new to Americans. Stick a big V8 in a mid-sized car and beef up the chassis. Pontiac GTO, Plymouth Road Runner, The Bluesmobile...but the M5 is the full development of the concept. It's fast, roomy, comfortable, fun to drive, gets great gas mileage on the highway (25mpg +/- ), and gets lots of comments from strangers. People know what an M5 is and respect the car for what it is. I stopped at an out-of-town BMW dealer to buy a quart of oil and was asked by them to sell my M5 to them!

I had a 2003 BMW 330Ci, and I decide that I wanted more space, but at the same time I wanted more performance, and that’s why I opted for the E39 M5. I wanted the E60 M5, but this one was more on my budget! Was a deal of the century. So far I am really satisfied with the vehicle. The ride is out of this world when in sport mode. It is a real sleeper. It moves like a rocket for a 4 door sedan, despite the car being 7 years old.I had to replace a few things, but most of them were tear and wear. So I am not complaining. I do recommend that before anybody buys one of these to check the clutch, bushing, get the carfax and try to find out the kind of maintenance the car received before you buy it.

I'd looked at the M5 in '90, but passed it up in favor of the V8 in the 90 Q45. Well, 13 years later I snapped up the last of the E39 design. It is, in a word, the ultimate 4 door sedan. Styling is georgeous, power is phenomenal, handling is crisp and reassuring. I've still not explored the upper limits of handling, probably cannot really do it on an open road. Perhaps track time this spring? Interior comfort, fit and finish are outstanding- rich but sporty, not 'plush and tufted'. Radio is fantastic- better reception than my two other japanese radios. But who listens to radio? Just installed Sirius Sat Radio with BMW oem components (displays on the nav screen). Mine has the MAudio

One of the Best Cars Ever Made

The E39 M5 gets an automatic entry in the debate for best sedan ever made - if not best vehicle period. The design is timeless. The build-quality is superb. The performance speaks for itself. This is a car that does EVERYTHING right. Press the "Sport" button to invoke mind-bending acceleration and seemingly inexhaustible grip. The braking is par excellence. The frame has a rigidity akin to the Hoover Dam. Response, whether throttle or steering, is instantaneous. Every moment in an M5 can make you aware that this is, truly, a very special machine.

Well, Almost. No where else are you going to get 400 Horse Power, and will seat 5 comfortably. The BMW M5 is the Apex of the Super Sport Sedan section. No other Sport sedan can do what this machine can do. But, i've heard the M6 will come out soon, same as the M5, but with 2 doors, a V10 and 500 horses!!!!!! Only bimmer can do that.

this is a true racecar for the street. last year,as a benefit of buying the M5,i attended the performance track day in south carolina where we got to thrash M5s around the rack and skid pad for a day. these cars just keep giving and giving....power and control at the same time. i love this car it doesn't turn heads like a ferrari would, but it elicits appreciative glances and thumbs up from knowlegeable car folk. and it ran nose to nose with a ferrari 360 one sunday morning on interstate 95 from the entrance ramp to well north of 150mph. the ferrari quit

With 20,000 miles over 14 months, this car is incredible. Haven't had a bit of trouble. While the car is unbelivably doclie and easy to drive around town, step on it and the acceleration will peel the skin from your bones. Only car on the planet to combine superb luxury for 5 adults and and still blow away most anything on the road.

Far better than I expected. The nicest car I have owned. I have a 90's M3 and an 80's M5, but this exceeded my expectations. Most impressive is that it offers confidence-inspiring road feel while still providing a ride that is not jarring to passengers (unlike my Honda S2000 which can occasionally tire both driver and passenger). The engineers at BMW have achieved a suspension that provides appropriate feedback without undue harshness. The engine winds up like a turbine with an exhaust note that only hints of the power available. The interior is beautiful and uses leather on every surface save the cieling.

It's amazing how vault-like the M5 feels when you get inside and close the door. The interior feels great, the seats are the best I've ever had. I find the dash--with its silver aluminum trim and black padding--a litte too Teutonic for my tastes. It's a (dark) look I'm slowly getting used to, but not really warming up to. Surprisingly, the car is quiet under all conditions, even full throttle is a bit subdued. It's absolutely effortless to drive. It doesn't handle as well as my M3, but with 800 more pounds, I guess it isn't meant to. Still, it's no slouch going into the twisties. It feels so composed under all conditions.

This is my first real fast car that I have ever had. Its been a 1 1/2 years now since I got my M5 and I still get as excited to get in it and drive it as I did the day I got it.If you own one of these cars and get the opportunity to have a professional show you what it can do on the track, DO IT. The cars limitations are well beyond what most people think. I then had the chance to have the instructor sit next to me and teach me how to drive the car. Just unbelievable what this car can do but yet I can throw my 2 kids and wife in it and go out. I love it.

All my life I dreamed of a car that was so perfect. The drivetrain is outstading, braking is phonomenal, and build quality is very impressive. I drive the m5 alot through towns and on highways and it is always a pleasure. The gas miliage is not very good, but it is all made up for. The sterio system is very high quality and all interior materials have a nice feel to them. This is a luxary car that drives like a smooth, slick race car. In the world of sports sedans it can't be beat.

The M5 is a perfect balance between the family sedan (fits our two car seats nicely. Superior safety feature) and a Winston Cup car. This car is overflowing with luxury. The sound system rocks (except you can't add satellite radio with DSP). The navigation is great. Most of all this car flat our hauls you know what, and holds the road like glue! Forget about buying a Porsche and a family car. This car has it all!

Car handles like it is on rails. Awesome performance. The radio has electronic gremlins that shuts it down from time to time. I have the standard audio system which is satisfactory but not as good as in my previous Lexus. Cupholders are poorly designed and appear to be an afterthought by the design engineers.

This car is simply incredible. Have 3 passengers to take in style, no problem. Need to haul something, fold down the rear seat, no problem. You like a great stereo, it's there. This car does not behave like a 540i with extra power. This car is a precision driving instrument waiting to respond to how you'd like to drive it. It is the most fun thing to drive I have ever owned and in day to day driving is practical. Yes it has a 6 speed manual, but the clutch is easy to engage and the engine has so much torque that you can mininize the number of shifts you need in traffic. This car is an incredible piece of automotive artestry. The engineers at BMW got this one just right.
