My Best Car Ever

Bought this car used in 1997 with <20K miles. I have maintained it myself and with the help of the Bentley manual found it easy to work on. With 145K it still has the original clutch. With snow tires and LSD it handles well in the snow. Other than ball joints, have done nothing but routine maintenance. Handles great (I added Bilsteins) and gets 30 mpg on my 80 mi commute. If you find a well maintained low mileage example, buy it!

I have been absolutely astonished to find how much I have loved this car, and what a reliable car it is, 12 years later. I am a bit scared of the cost of a repair when something goes, but I see no reason why anything should anytime soon.

BMW 3 series convertible

Excellent quality car that lasts and lasts. Very fun to drive, lots of pickup and very solid. I was hit sideways by a bus and I was not injured and the car did not require a major part replacement. It has room in the back seat for 2 adults, which most convertibles do not have. Trunk is small though but bigger than most sports cars. Maintain it regularly and get a good mechanic and it will provide you with many years of enjoyment. Paint job lasts well if waxed regularly.

An outstanding vehicle for the price (<10K). A good way to experience the ultimate driving machine at less than half the cost. Due diligence is necessary though as our vehicle was previously damaged and undisclosed/ignorance claimed by the dealership about the trunk and right rear quarter-panel. Despite this, the vehicle proved to be mechanically top notch with replacements necessary only for track use. This is our daily driver and it is solid. It averages around 21 MPG which is approx. the norm despite the occasional spirited driving.

Worth the money

I love the car in spite of its imperfections. It doesn't have enough power and the fuel mileage is horrible for a 4 banger especially if you really drive it. It is very comfortable and fun to drive. It is definately worth the $ paid for it because it looks more expensive than it is. It is a great looking car and gets a lot of compliments. It is also reliable and easy to work on. Over all it is a great value.

Vintage BMW 2002 Reinvented

Bought this 4-banging hard runner as a pup and have put all 89,000 miles on it in a variety of environments. I run it daily on n 11-miles commute, and then again have put as many 32,000 miles on it during one year (1998). It's a blast to drive, has never let me down, and I still get questions as if it were brand new - there just aren't that many around.

Bought mine around 2010. It's currently pushing 250k miles and running SUPER strong! Oil and plug change, Changed the wheel bearings all around and it's been solid! It does have some rather cheap things that wear easily, But its nothing expensive at the 100$ mark or more. Did need to change the alternator at 230k. Other wise, GREAT!!

This is the worse car I have ever owned

Bought this coming off of lease and have spend major $$$ from day one. Everything from steering to air conditioning problems. I have needed new brake pads almost annually and there is a strange loud noise while driving. Most of my problems started on day one but got continually worse as 100K miles.

This car is great to drive, lets make that one clear. It's just powerful enough to snap your neck back, but not so much so that it gets you noticed. It's handling is amazing, acceleration robust, and braking solid. If you love to drive this is your car. I take it out multiple times a week on local hilly and curvy roads and it eats them up. What they say about its maintenance costs are true - if you decide to make the plunge you better have spare cash. I bought mine with 130k for $4k and have dumped in 6k, EASILY over the past six months. If you're looking for a commuter car that just happens to be fun look elsewhere. This car is for those who want the rush and are willing to pay for it.

Good car but E46 is much better!

This car has been extremely durable so far and performance is still similar to how it was when new seven years ago. The engine and transmission and brake performance are still excellent, and comfort is still there. However, the new series is simply miles beyond this car, no comparison. Biggest problem has been the SRS - Airbag system, which has been out of action for four of the last seven years with multiple and expensive failures. Also lost the engine balancer and it took the dealer a week to get it back to me on this one. Dealer service has been generally feeble so have resorted to independents who have proven much better!

I bought a 1999 318i convertible while living in Germany and lived it! Back then, the car was 6 years old. Fast forward to the USA! My wife doesn't care for my motorcycle, so I had the crazy idea to get another BMW Cabrio! But this time, I found a 1995, black with sand and beige interior. Manually top, manual transmission and I love it! It's so hard for me not to drive it, but luckily I'm an over the road trucker so that makes it easier! I bought it from a dealer in Pennsylvania who displayed it and seldom drove it. It was the 2nd time it was at his dealership! The second owner bought it 18 years prior, then traded it in on a sedan for his son! Then I happened along. He told me that he could've sold many times except for one thing.... perspective buyers couldn't drive a stick! I drove it from Blue Bell, PA back to Concordia, KS last September, where she refused in a garage that I cleared just for her! She has needed nothing! I had the oil changed, replaced some plastic molding under the windshield, trunk lid struts, a K&N air filter and I changed the plugs! Next month I'll take her in to a BMW mechanic who specializes in Euro vehicles generally, but E36's specifically! My wife, who is also German, has yet to drive it! She's become accustomed to American pickups and automatics, plus, I think secretly she knows how much I love that car! Sometimes when we're driving, I catch her just looking at me. She says because I have this certain "look" when I'm rowing through the gears! I'm never getting rid of her! The car, I mean!

$$$ Repairs $$$

This was the best car I've ever driven and the worst investment I ever made. I had a love/hate relationship with this car because I loved the way it drove and hated the constant money I spent on repairs. And the repairs were weird stuff that I've never had happen on any car I've owned before: Brake calipers; ignition switch; door locks; window motor; auxiliary (electric) fan; etc... The list goes on and on, and everything seemed to cost about $500.00 to repair - not cheap. At the same time, I got the feeling that the engine, 5-speed tranny, & most normal wear and tear items would have lasted forever. It was well designed & a blast to drive, but...
