The devil is in the details

After nearly a year with the vehicle and 10,000 miles, the opinion has not changed much from what I wrote below. I definitely prefer driving my 7 year old MB E Class or a 10 year old ML. They are much better vehicles overall. Let’s start with the good stuff. The Q7 is a beautiful vehicle, handsome on the outside and beautiful inside a German, minimalist style. The seats are comfortable and there is lots of room. Visibility from the cabin is excellent, especially for my wife who is not tall. Cargo space is good. We were able to pick up 5 family members each with a large suitcase and carry on. Almost all systems are controlled on one of two touch screens. It takes some time to learn your way around, however. Once you figure it out, getting around is logical. We have the 2.0 liter engine which delivers good power and reasonable fuel economy for our purposes. Handling is tight and sharp. The ride is firm but comfortable. It is the sort of experience that you would expect from a German luxury vehicle. The screens including the speedometer and tach can be configured for different drivers. Before starting the car, the driver must select the profile that he or she wants. That can be good or a nuisance depending on your point of view. Ah, but the devil lurks inside. The lane keeping assist is really unacceptable. It kicks in too often and too aggressively. When pulling out to pass pedestrians, bicyclists, or stopped vehicles, it actively resists the maneuver trying to push the vehicle back into the danger area. It even resists turning into a curve on the road aggressively. I can easily imagine it causing a driver to respond improperly resulting in an accident. The backup camera lens is useless in the rain. Unlike other vehicles, airflow causes moisture to accumulate on the lens making the view opaque. The driver has to get out of the car and dry it before using it to back up. The center console is useless for storage. Under the armrest there is a pad for wireless phone charging and a small shallow tray good for a pen or two. That is all. There is no additional space for change, or other items that drivers typically carry in their cars. The door pockets, by the way, are very skinny compared to other vehicles. The cupholders in the center console are only large enough to fit a cup the size of a Yeti thermal cup. Don’t plan on carrying any large or off shape containers. The cupholders in the middle row are even smaller and almost useless. The owners manual was probably written by German engineers who speak excellent English. For example, the map light ca me on spontaneously one evening. The owners manual had instructions on how to turn it off on several different Audi models, none of which was a 2023 Q7. None worked on this vehicle. After 15 minutes of fiddling with the thing, the light went out. The bottom line, we will not be getting another Audi—or other VW based product. We are four months into a 3 year lease and would love to get out of it.

Buyer's Remorse

I decided to buy an Audi when I needed to hand down my Lincoln Aviator to an employee. Now I regret it. Below is my stream of conscience list of complaints. I don't like the jerkiness of the lane assist, so I turned it off. After starting the car a few times (and there's no pattern to it), it comes back on. There's no place for sunglasses except for a mini-glove compartment at my left knee. If you forget to shut the little door, you will hit your knee on it when you exit the car. The phone charger is in the console, so the console is literally 2 inches deep, and it's really only a phone warmer, which stops the phone charging. To put the car in reverse, you push the gear forward. :/ The cup holders are so tight, beware of puncturing a styrofoam cup when you put it in the holder. When I'm parking (straight in to a spot), the sensors don't warn me that I'm getting close to an object in front of me. With my phone on CarPlay, I can switch to the radio--yes, I'm one of those people who still likes the radio. Sometimes it switches back to CarPlay for no apparent reason. The adaptive cruise control automatically changes the speed based on the speed limit, so as soon as it sees the new lower limit, you feel like you might have a whiplash because the change is so abrupt. The Aviator camera issue was truly annoying, but I liked everything else about it. As soon as it's feasible financially, I will be selling the Q7. The main positives are the looks (complete strangers tell me it's a beautiful car, maybe because I had it wrapped in red), and the air ride model that I have makes for a very smooth ride. I would not recommend it to anyone.

Audi Prestige is the height of luxury in a SUV

I am thrilled with my Audi Q7 Prestige 2023 which I now driven the first 1000 miles. As a 76 year old with back issues I was looking for comfort and quiet and the Q7 delivers. The Q7 is better powered than its competitors and engine noise is smooth and almost unnoticeable. The interior is beautifully designed and worthy of the price. The information system is new to learn but once I learned audi's approach it was easy to use. I had tested several luxury models and found that to gain MPG manufacturers are under powering these heavy vehicles. Not the case for the Audi, particularly with the V6 engine.

Never again

Of all the cars and SUV’s I’ve owned in 50 years, this is the worst. I miss my 2016 Grand Cherokee. Confusing set up and use of everything. Even the trip odometers are a pain, the sales guy couldn’t figure it out. For $70k, I could have gotten a well set up Cherokee. The suspension is surprisingly rough over poor road conditions-our Dodge 2500 pickup is quieter. The lane control comes on indiscriminately, as we like to steer our own cars. And most annoying, the rear seatbelts flutter if you drive with the rear windows down (our dog rides in the rear cargo area). Our Cherokee has simple Velcro to stop the flutter, but not a German made Audi. Never again.

Flaky Electronics

Audi are built solidly, have nice amenities, and drive well. We had a 2020 we had leased and traded it in for the newer version. We are both super frustrated with the inconsistent behavior of the electronics. We disable lane assist (it is awful), and it will turn itself back on randomly - 1 our of 6 times is my guess. The e-brake is on when you start it 50% of the time with no rhyme or reason why. And it loves to tell me to connect a mobile device even when I don't want to (the message dominates the main display). Should be a really nice car but the electronics are just flaky in their behavior.
