Finally, back in an Audi !! Bye bye Mercedes , BMW
About 2 years I bought the (sexy) Mercedes GLC 300 Coupe. I really thought (and still do) that it was one of the more eye catching cars on the road and I'd frankly rarely see one, but the controls drove me crazy. I had originally looked at an Audi Q5 but they hadn't brought some of the driver safety and technology features down into the car. Fast forward late 2018, I traded in my Mercedes for a Q5. The fully loaded Q5 is a thing of beauty, the classic Audi high end design (I had an A7 when they first came out) has finally translated into a mid-size, city friendly form factor. I found this was large enough to haul my dogs and tons of baggage cross state, while nimble enough to kind of make me feel like I was driving a sports car when on windy roads or empty city byways. Things to like: Voice recognition for navigation entry really works well (I've owned BMW, Mercedes, Infinit, etc. -- this is definitely the best). However, the Nag (at least here in Chicagoland) picks weird routes. There isn't a "fastest" versus "shortest distance" option and I find it seems to gravitate to the shortest distance. Android Auto is fabulous, the integration really works amazing, having the stereo lower it's volume to announce a speed trap ahead is just too cool. The dual clutch automatic truly is wonderful. Much faster than my Mercedes, however the auto-start feels a little half-baked, like MBW's. The Mercedes was the only auto-start that I never even noticed. While I like the MMI, it's time to get a touch screen. I always gravitate to turning the knob the wrong way. The stereo is simply the best sounding factory radio I've ever heard. The full length panoramic roof is the first I've ever owned and I love it -- and I hate sunroofs! My Mercedes had a standard size one that when you closed the cover still allowed sun to hit me square in the eyes through the louvers. Some of the automation on the Audi is more adjustable -- and thus a little less refined out of the gate. Where in the Mercedes I didn't notice it, on the Audi it sometimes annoyingly raises it's head (but generally if you read the manual you find a setting to adjust it to your liking). The ride definitely feels a little more "road like" then the Mercedes, kind of in between a BMW and Mercedes, more sporty than not. Believe it or not the auto-highbeams are the best I've ever used, I drove this through some Michigan roads with turnabouts and it was amazing how quickly it would turn them on and off. The interior style is beautiful, especially at night. I head the HUD which I love, but I have to admit having three displays with different Nav (virtual cockpit, center display and HUD) sometimes leaves you wondering where to look for the best directions. It definitely took me a few trips before I quite got the feel of when it was going to give me the next direction (and I really wish they'd toss the next turn street name on the HUD, seems like they should be able to do that by now). The virtual cockpit and internal LED coloring combined with all of the lighting refinements is a thing of beauty. Even the read compartment has lights in a surprisingly sexy and useful locations. Having the ability to change the mood lighting is sweet. Seats are about an 8, I never quite get 100% comfortable (but then I think I'd say the same about Mercedes too). This is the most technologically advanced vehicle I've owned -- and I've had a few -- and I'm impressed with the integration and style. Audi never fails to impress with the attention to detail, the knobs make other cars look cheap, the use of red and blue LEDs for cool and hot, the right amount of silver on the knobs and buttons all makes the vehicle feel refined. Hiding the SD card player in the glove box isn't the most convenient but it works -- and I was pleasantly surprised when I realized that incoming calls displayed the caller's face from my phone records. Just another one of those "wow's" you see after riding around for awhile. You have to twiddle with the auto-cruise settings or long trips can be tiresome (you end up fighting the car's lane assist until you realize it has different settings); the pre-sense in my A7 saved me once from a duffus in front of me on the highway once who slammed on their breaks unexpectedly and while I haven't had the opportunity to test any of these features, I trust Audi's engineering in this space. The city traffic control is great for stop and go traffic. I wish this car had been available 2 years ago and I wish that a heated steering wheel came with heated seats (how stupid to make that a separate option, I regret missing that every time I grab the cold wheel). Sight lines are fantastic for a car this size, I'm able to back this into a very tight garage quite easily, though the fact that steering doesn't automatically straighten out seems like a weird oversight.

On my 2nd Q5, and love it more
Had a 2014 Q5, for 3 1/2 years, that was totaled (other driver ran a stop sign and plowed into me). That car had not given me any issues so for me it was a no-brainer to buy the 2018. It's now been 28 months, and I still I love this car. I like the safety features (pre sense, rear traffic alerts etc.) . Engine performance is better than the 2014 - peppier, more horsepower, and so far I'm seeing better mileage than my 2014. I generally get 22 or so in mixed driving, and roughly 27 highway. I've seen some of the bad reviews and frankly I'm surprised. I can't say whether I'm lucky or they are unlucky but in any event I'm a happy owner.

Gave up my 2018 Audi Q5 after 2 months
I like a comfortable riding car, I'm in it for long periods of time, so it should be comfortable. I made the switch to the 2018 Audi Q5 from a 2013 Lexus RX350. This Audi is definitely a beautiful luxury vehicle, and I love bells and whistles in my car so I got the Prestige version. If you have any personal padding in your backside, you will hate these hard seats. I just could not get comfortable no matter what I adjusted, it cut me in the back of the thigh. Driving for any period of time was painful. It drove beautifully, and was responsive, but I just didn't click with this car. Technology wise, I love the heads up display that kept me informed of the local speed limit, and how fast I was going right next to each other. But, I found the center console technology had to get used to, dial this, push that, if there a 3 lines on one side there's another menu, a plus on the other side of the screen meant another menu. Dial, menu, dial, menu. There is NO room in the console, no place to put your phone, very hard to reach cup holders, and a center console box that is so small it wouldn't hold a small box of Kleenex. The shifter moves back and forth for reverse, neutral, and drive pressing one button, but there was a separate button to push for park... and no noise alerting you to being in park. The car is so quiet, and the radio is still on until you open a door, half the time I didn't remember if I turned the car off. And the worst thing I could not get used to was no memory seats that side back when you get out of the vehicle, and no remote start. Remote start is not available in any Audi. I traded it in after only 2 months, and it lost $10,000 in value! I absolutely would have gone back to a new Lexus if I liked the grill on the last few years versions, if they change that it a few years, I will go back to Lexus. In the meantime, I went with a Nissan, next best thing to a Lexus.

Dreamboat
Bought new. Paid cash. 10K miles in less than a year. Mileage average 29.1. Quiet, comfortable, great tech. One caveat. Get instruction from your dealer's techie. I'm fairly savvy about such things, and figured out much of it. Consult with dealer's techie revealed things I hadn't discovered on my own. The owner's manual reads like a tome on German theology, and as a seminary grad I should know. The clicking sound you hear when first starting off is the turn-on of the ABS. Well into year 2 and Doody the Audi is still the car I thought it would be. MPG still around 29 and still very quiet.
