A8 my dust
fun. fun. fun. esp for such a large luxury sedan. we wanted a high performance car as well as something large enough to travel with small children. I cannot say enough about the performance for such a large vehicle. this car purrs like a cat at 2500-2800 rpm (95 mph) which is about the perfect cruising speed. Too bad we dont have an autobahn. fuel economy is good 17.5 in town 25.5 hwy w/ lead foot. minimal upkeep, great service and the finish/ trim is immaculate, even after 2 yrs
Objective Review
I've driven Mercedes, Lexus, BMW's, Cadillac's, and although some of them had more gadgets, more power or were more quiet, none of them felt as solid and rigid as the 2001 Audi A8. Personally, the rarity of this vehicle is a big plus for me, and that is complemented by a solid ride, more than average comfort and very acceptable performance for such a heavy car, not to mention the Quattro, which shines in every aspect. Its fuel economy is not great, but frankly which car in this category gives more than 15 mpg. This car may not be a rocket, or turn on a dime, but whatever performance number it reaches, it does in a very smooth and effortless way. Add to this a warranty until 2007 or 100,000 miles.
Give me a brake (yes brake)
To be in the big league price category you need a reliable well riding automobile. My A8L had brakes replaced 4 times in 50,000 miles. Navigation had to be replaced. Tire pressuer monitor never worked properly. I disconnected it. The timing chain had to be replaced at 51,000 miles. Noise level high, I used to think a window was open. Still do. Forget about the suspension, My sons Civic takes the bumps better as well as the curves.
I love my Audi
This is a great vehicle for a full size sedan. It has plenty of power and drives like a sports car.
Great car, but make sure it's certified
Over the past three years, it seems like my A8L has been in the shop as much as in the garage. Fortunately, it was Certified, so except for the $50 deductible and inconvenience, it has been relatively painless. Here is a listing of problems: Thermostat (replaced along with timing belt @ 50K miles), vacuum hoses/connectors, Torque converter/Transmission (required replacement), peeling console material, etc. etc. etc....
