Cross shopped with BMW X5 and considered others.
The Volvo won because it combined good styling(inside and out), good handling for a crossover, great (prob the best in class) safety, a 5 year warranty with free service, and finally, a quality dealership experience that was close by.
If you can swing it, I definitely recommend the T6 version with the 300hp, 325 lb torque turbo inline 6 engine.
It is buttery smooth, has no real turbo lag.Much better power delivery than a similar hp Infiniti engine, with a lot less vibration and noise.
We got the R design version for the tighter handling and steering, plus the design elements which make the car look better.
It handles quite well.
Interior styling on R design, nice exterior lines, smooth ride on good roads, very quiet for the class, good turn-in and handling, excellent brakes, confident feel at speed, good storage areas, seats fold fully flat,
city safety, fit and finish, materials quality, awesome bending xenon lights, good visability, 5 year warranty, excellent dealer experience with no games.
I also like that unlike flashier premium brands, it does not scream "look at me, I'm rich, so follow me home and rob me" or engender envy issues with others.
I'm fine knowing it's a nice choice, I don't have to prove anything to anyone.
R design sport seats are a little narrow for max comfort for wide backs.
Steering feel and precision is not like a BMW's.
I wouldn't mind another 2" of shoulder room.
Drivers leg well is a little restricted in width, forcing left foot a little too close to pedals for max comfort with tall drivers.
Infotainment options could be more modern (fixed on recent build models) and integrated.
Dealers add too many option packages on vehicles in inventory.
Passion Red hard to find w/o $6,000 extra in options.
NAV not great and required on package to get rear camera and stereo upgrade.
Volvo now owned by Geeley. R design should be just under $40K
by dropping some features that are not needed.
