My 2005 Matrix, purchased new in 2005, shares this problem. The original tires were spent at about 31000 miles in the third year. The dealer had the same line that these stock Continental tires just don't last. The car has been reliable overall, so I didn't give it much more of a thought. I purchased a pretty expensive set of Sumitomo tires to replace the originals. In the past couple of ... Read More
My mechanic, who was a Toyota mechanic for 20 years before he opened his own shop, told me the cupping wear is not camber, alignment or any other mechanical issue. He said any of that will not really solve the problem, Toyota is very much aware of the issue and won't do a thing about it. I'm getting ready to change the rims on my Matrix 2005 with the hopes it ... Read More
First, the Matrix is a Toyota product. The Vibe was the rebadging. My 2005 5-speed was built in Canada. The transmission is outsourced, however. Aisin, I believe. Now, here is a warning for those who have not had trouble: Don't continue to drive until the tranny self-destructs. This will cost you $3000+. When you first hear a strange sound-like a muffled rattle, get the transmission repaired. I did this with a ... Read More
Interesting comment. However, I believe the Matrix transmission is outsourced. The supplier installed marginal bearings not for less weight, but for lower cost. The vendor gets to pocket the cost savings which will amount to many thousands of dollars over the years he gets away with it. The transmission was "redesigned" for my 2005, but the bearings were still marginal. As mentioned previously, mine let go at 117k miles. The replaced ... Read More
We have a 2003 Matrix XR with a manual transmission. Up until this past week, it's been great and I'd always say (when people asked if I liked it), "I'd buy it again, knowing what I know now." Then at a hair under 100k, the transmission goes. And then we find all these accounts of exactly the same thing happening to 2003 (and, to a lesser degree, 2004) Matrix pointing to ... Read More
Like I was explaining to "mw20" there is nothing wrong about the noise that you are hearing. It's totally normal. I've been hearing that noise since 1991 when applying the brakes on every vehicle I've owned, every time I apply the brakes on a icy or snow covered surface and even on dry or wet surface every time the brakes are applied hard I hear that (grinding/humming or ever) sound that ... mw20, You are the first person who has adequately described the awful ABS brake noise I get with my 2008 Matrix. I've tried to describe it here but no one seemed to believe me or thought I was exaggerating. I too have been told this noise is "normal" both by people in this forum and by others. It may be "normal" but it should not be acceptable! I think Toyota trying ... Read More
I don't own a Matrix but plan to buy one in the near future, that's why I come here often. In the past all my vehicles that had ABS system made a funny sound (grinding noise) or other sound depending on the model. My 2009 toyota matrix has an awful grinding noise when brakes applied in snowy, icy conditions. It sounds like throwing it into reverse while going 40 mph down to road. I rode with my local technician a very short distance and applied brake going only 10 mph and the horrible grinding noise was there. He told me that the grinding, slamming sound was normal not to worry about it. He said all ... Read More
Hey all. I bought my Matrix around two years ago almost new (11k miles). Now it has around 43K miles and the last few months my transmission has been showing increasing symptoms of unwellness. At first, the clutch just felt a bit mushy, and to what extent this feeling was real vs. my paranoia I do not know. However, now it is hard to shift gears any time the engine is ... Read More

it seems to me that Toyota gave you one of the trannys from the bad lot of bearings they received, in speaking with a transmission shop here in southern california they said that they use rebuild kits that are not toyota original parts and should hold up better. if you have another new transmission you might be able to find out when it was manufactured and if it was after 2005 ... Just bought 2009 Matrix - while I did research BEFORE I spent the money, I didn't catch this forum - I relied on the mainstream stuff (Consumer Reports, etc.). Is this your first experience with ABS? ABS should kick in if you are skidding. There is pulsating, and you should hear a grinding sort of noise. Take a technician for a ride and put the car into an intentional skid. See if he/she says it's normal.
I purchased a 2005 Matrix at the beginning of 2006, with 20,000 miles on it. The dealership had put new tires on it when I bought the car. I drove it till 54,000 miles and needed to replace the tires, now it has 70,000 miles and it needs tires again. I bought Pirelli's and made the tire shop take them off because of the rough ride, they put Mastercraft on it ... Read More
We have a 2005 Toyota Matrix and the ABS brakes have a terrible grinding noise which the dealer says is normal as the brakes have to pulsate and consquently a noise. However this is an excessive noise that grinds when the brakes are applied during snowy or icy conditions. Any suggestions to fix the problem. Charles
I just leased a 2009 Matrix S today (10/31/08). 36mo/12K per year. This was from Walser Toyota-a pretty well-known 'fixed price/no negotiation' dealership chain here in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. since you Canadians get to build most of the Vibes/Matrixes/Corollas it would seem that you are getting some model choices not available down here in the States - heck even the 'luxury' Corolla XLE is sold with the new 1.8. No custom bearing is needed. There is a updated kit. The problem is a defective main bearing from Japan. Not sure where the revised kit bearing comes from. I have heard of some going up to 200K before failure. As it only affects a ... Read More

Well of course, there was the TSB and later production change to the twilight sensor in the Matrix that the Vibe never got (headlights flicking on and off every time you went under a tree, it was really annoying in the early Matrixes, thank goodness Toyota offered a fix). I thought they parted ways after 2005, each taking over the evolution of their own version of the platform? If so, then stuff like the liftglass could easily be different between Vibe and Matrix. And given the fact that Toyota has just introduced liftglass on the Highlander, I can't imagine they would remove it from the Matrix for the redo.
By the way, the repair bill for a new transmission is $5000. Luckily i only had to bay $2000 because I had mine serviced at Toyota and my dealer called Toyota Canada directly. The problem seems to exist only with 2003-4. The transmission and engine was changed for 2005. So if you want a Matrix get a 2005 or later and you may be ok. I probably still won't get one ... I have had an ongoing battle with Toyota Canada over my '03 Matrix after the manual transmission went at 108k (km) in Dec of 2005. If you care about gas price, you shouldn't buy Matrix. A V4 Camery is more fuel efficient. It sounds very strange, but it is the absolute truth. Still missing your Trix, I see :) just j/k of course.... In 2005, it will appear that I'll be trading out of my Matrix for a 330ci. Had an unforgettable drive in a friend's 330ci recently, and cannot get over it. It is definitely a keeper for me - the Bimmer of course. After being a huge Toyota/Lexus-ophile for years, I'll be buying my first German car, and only the 3-series ... Read More
I wish you better luck than I had with trying to special order a Matrix. After researching several vehicles for over 1 1/2 years for the specifications, equipment, and reliability I desired I wasted nearly 2 months with a dealership who just wouldn't be honest with me about supposedly putting in a special order for Extra Value Package #2 (QP) plus side airbags (BE) on a 2004 Matrix XR FWD. All ... Read More

The radio is now a Toyota radio, no longer GM. This also means no more navigation system Matrix will be made. They have a new sound system with an integrated subwoofer option as well. On the safety ... Read More

The grill is slightly different, the honeycomb look is broken up by a solid line in the middle (don't like it), the fog/driving lights are now closer to the edges of the newly designed front bumper (similar to the Vibes) as opposed to the current design ... Here are my bets, in order of priority: 1) AWD comes with bigger motor and manual tranny as standard equipment by 2005 2) Base Matrix remains with the 1.8L Corolla engine, but upped in hp a tad (maybe 10% more hp and torque) 3) XR gets the bigger motor on the AWD trim as an option. Base 1.8L engine remains standard. 4) XRS trim gets upped low-end torque with a bigger ... Read More
Hurler, yes, what I meant was fake carbon, it is easier to get, because of the demand. Some think it looks cooler than fake aluminum and it should be definitely more scratch-resistant. But I do not see why someone would not make more traditionally looking panels. The only question is, does demand for such a panel would justify the production? Do not think so :( Now, anyone in the mood for ... Read More
