A Safe, Comfortable, Practical Luxury Car

My vehicle priorities have included safety, comfort, durability/fuel economy, and carrying capacity (cargo, dogs etc.), in about that order. This is our 4th Volvo since 1990. The other 3 were wagons (a 240 and 2 V70s). The last one we bought now is about 12 years old with over 220K miles; until this past month it has required little more than routine maintenance but now it is starting to show its age. Good price incentives in July encouraged me to buy new. I chose the XC60 over another 70 series mostly for the styling and extra ground clearance in the XC60, and because cargo capacity isn't as big a priority for us anymore. The XC60 is a very comfortable car with supportive front seats and enough leg, shoulder and head room for my above average male body size. The drive-e engine delivers surprisingly good fuel economy for a car this heavy, yet acceleration also is more than adequate for my needs. The leather seats are beautiful, although I would have preferred the cloth upholstery that has held up so well in my old V70 for 12 years. Another thing I miss is the fold-flat front passenger seat in the V70, which allowed me occasionally to carry long items such as lumber (but then, I wouldn't want to do that in a car this nice). The infotainment system keeps me entertained and informed with more choices than I really need. It's a little more complicated than I would have preferred and I'm afraid it will seem dated within a few years. The "premier" version is nicely equipped as-is, without adding expensive options. If you're comparing alternatives, Subaru is another (less expensive) make I'd consider, especially if you want AWD. Volvo prices seem to run lower than you'd pay for most Lexus, Audi, BMW or Mercedes models (unless you get into the bigger, more expensive 90 series, which would've been more than we need).

Never buy this car

Purchased this volvo from dealership and it was nothing but trouble. I have had to replace the A/C motor with 40, 000 miles. The driver side seat actuator broke a couple of thousand miles after replacing that. At 50,000 miles had to replace USB adapters and had to replace the window controls on the drivers door. To top it off, at 62,000 miles the timing belt slipped and cause the motor to lose time and caused catastrophic damage inside the motor. Volvo Of Winston Salem, NC said they would be happy to replace that motor for $16,000. Talked to Volvo USA and Volvo Sweden and they would not do anything to assist. Volvo USA told me that the reason the timing belt slipped was because they spark plugs had not been changed when they were supposed to be changed. That is a mechanical impossibility. I researched and found almost 200 cases of the timing belt slipping and causes catastrophic engine failure. I have never experienced the type terrible customer service I experienced with Volvo of Winston Salem, NC and Volvo USA. DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!.

We bought our 2016 XC60 T5 Drive E used, certified at 41,000. Now we have 71,000 miles. It replaced a brilliant 2002 BMW 325it wagon. As fantastic and reliable as the BMW was, I haven't missed it a bit. The Volvo, especially our trim, has an exceptional amount of features for a car of its age. Note that ours is very well equipped (some have less) with dynamic cruise control which brakes the car and re-accellerates it in traffic, it's a stress saver. Plus, safer since it near-guarantees you won't rear end someone. Other niceties, are oversized, opening sunroof, power-fold side mirrors, power tailgate, navigation (which I've never used, since the iphone is brilliant). Surprising delights: The interior lighting is tasteful yet functional. Tiny pinlights overhead illumnate cupholders, door pockets. Put it in reverse with the front wipers on, rear wiper comes on. Great gauges, with variable display options. MPG is outstanding. I'm 52, and I've driven plenty of fast cars but now, I'm a little more eco concious and take a thrill in saving gas. It's weird but I'm proud of it. The ECO button really saves gas impressively. Shift points are shortened so you get into a high gear asap, yet in a need-for-speed, you can flop the shifter into "Sport" and get rocket acceleration. One more rarity, this vehicle has a spare tire. If you've shopped BMW, Tesla, Mercedes, even the Volvo V60 wagon, you likely don't get a spare. To me, that's bull. Having to flatbed a car with a flat in 2022 when you never had to in 1970, '80, '90 seeme regressive. I get that they're heavy, yet towtrucks are heavier. Duds: The interior storage up front is only ok. The "floating console" leaves room for a pair of sunglasses behind the controls, but one turn and that item flies into the foot well. Somehow this car has the rattliest door pockets ever. I've even lined mine in neoprene and there's a propencity to have items in it clatter. Favorite items: The controls for volume, media and heat/cold are BRILLIANT. They're these things called knobs and buttons and lemme tell ya, you WANT them. I'm kinda itching for an electric car and the concept of VW ID4's silly sliding haptic controls, or even Volvo's screen stuff, it's a distraction and possibly unsafe. The 2016 XC60 has such smart controls, you truly never need to take eyes off the road, once you're familiar. Love it. Repairs: In 30k, we've replaced a battery and some sensor in the wiper fluid reservoir is going out. That's it. And the lights under the power window buttons are burning out. Otherwise, it's been flawless. I love Volvos but from what I've read here and elsewhere, I'd LIKE my next car to be an XC90 yet it won't. It just sounds as if they've lost their reliability and that's too bad. This car, with its incredibly comfortable seats, great infotainment and smart MPGs and.. well, Swedish chicness is a treasure. Update: Our XC60 now has 88,000 miles. No additional repairs since the last. It's really been exceptional. (For what it's worth, our 2019 Sienna Limited has had few, but more costly problems). I will note, it's always been to the dealer for service, but there's been so little service, it hasn't been a challenge. We'll probably replace soon with an EV (not likely to be a Volvo, sadly). I do want to add, as I try newer cars with touch-screen climate and audio, this evolution of control was EXCEPTIONAL. Knobs are the best. In split seconds, without even taking my eyes from the road, I can change radio stations, lower the fan, up the temp, speed up the wipers, turn on the seat heaters withhout ever looking at a screen. When we sell this car, I will miss that brilliance of design most.

2016 XC60 Needs a new engine - and Volvo USA is tu

48,100 miles on a XC60, all the service records intact, barely out of warranty, and the engine dies. Whether the problem is in the head or the cylinder is not clear, but the Volvo dealer is quoting me a new engine at $17k (note: the book value of the car is $16k). So logically we asked Volvo USA to review our case and, ideally, help us out somehow. Isn’t that reasonable? They flatly denied us, it took them all of one day to decide, so I guess we weren’t even close. Can you believe that? The car was taken care of, and the service records prove that, and their product failed us ... massively. What kind of company would leave us 100% on the hook like that? I’m sure these things happen now and then, but not to us, and not so massively, and not a couple month out of warranty, and not without the mfg showing some degree of concern. I’m telling you, my other car is a Tesla ... just get a Tesla and don’t waste you time with Volvo. The are beastly overweight dinosaurs and based on my experience ... unreliable.

Why did I wait so long to get a new-to-me Volvo

I had a 2010 Volvo XC-60 with 137,000 miles; I kept putting off buying a new or new-to-me car because I did not want a car payment after I paid of the 2010. I started looking for vehicles Summer 2018, test drove 3 cars, but they were all Dark Blue and had more miles and more dings, scratches, etc. One had low miles, but a long of dings on the passenger side of the vehicle. Still putting it off after my work started, I was determined to find a car over Thanksgiving break. There were two vehicles that caught my eye. I went to look at one on Sunday and sent in an internet interest request. I got a call on Monday, let them know that I would be there Wed. at 1 p.m. (appointment). By the time I got there, they had sold the vehicle at 11 a.m. or so. The internet contact let me know someone was taking the car for a test drive at 10 a.m. or so. That was a 2017 model with 21,000 miles. So, after that did not go well, I began re-searching and looking at my next choice, which was a low mileage 2016 model. I have had it a week and I don't know why I waited so long to upgrade! :)
