I have had this car for about 2 years and it has been in the shop at least 8 times. The latest debacle caused us to have to rent a car for 2 weeks in order to keep our vacation reservations. The “propulsion system failure” came on and I could only drive 22 miles an hour tops. Volvo has done nothing to right this problem we were faced with. In fact, their answer was,”it’s now working.” We had to have it towed to the dealership and all they did was tell me they drove it for a mile and no warnings came on. No one even looked it over! TOTALLY let down. This was our third Volvo purchase…..never again!!!

All the features, luxury and tech we wanted. Not the greatest selection of exterior or interior colors, but the Denim Blue with Blond interior is quite acceptable! Leather seats are infinitely adjustable, and the most comfortable of all the many, many other comparable small SUV's we tried. The AWD T5 is sufficient for the wife. I'll no doubt add the Polestar tune at some point. Wish they offered the T6 or T8. UPDATE: Went looking for an S60 sedan. No Chicago area dealers had one even close to what we wanted. Fortunately, we found this XC40 that had just arrived. It's a T5 Inscription, in Denim Blue (so sick of all these black, gray and white cars on the road!), with the blond interior and AWD. Gorgeous! Hate the electronic shifter that replaced the mechanical shifter on our old XC60 (and my 2013 S60). Hate it. Loving the Apple CarPlay and wireless charging. The touchscreen is not well implemented, requiring navigating through endless hierarchal menus for just about anything. But the voice recognition and steering wheel controls compensate pretty well. Seating is the most comfortable of any we tried, including Audi, BMW and Acura. As for performance, meh. My 5 cylinder T5 has way more low end torque, and faster 0-60 times. Once the RPMs get up to around 2,000-2,500 though, acceleration picks up nicely. Came with both carpeted and rubber floor mats. Steep learning curve from the 2012 we had, but we've adapted well. Not mentioned in reviews is the ground clearance, which is excellent for a small SUV @ 8.9" a big consideration in Chicago, which routinely snows at least that much almost every winter.

Good on tech, bad on gas

I really like the XC40 but gas mileage is subpar. I’m averaging about 13 mpg city and 23 mpg highway for a combined average of about 20 mpg on each tank of gas. The pros are the technology and features. The car is also comfortable to sit in and fun to drive.

Not perfect, but I love it

Unlike another reviewer’s comments, the HVAC is very quiet and effective. Super easy to change temp or other options with a couple of taps. And at least in the R Design, the materials are excellent and it feels minimalist but high quality. Love all the thoughtful storage compartments and built in trash can. Fun to drive, and in the normal comfort mode I get slightly better than advertised mileage. I do have a small issue where occasionally the car doesn’t recognize the remote. But pushing the lock or unlock button resolves it, and I do have an appointment next week to take it in for investigation. Also wish it had wireless CarPlay it found a great adapter and it works flawlessly.

When our new Volvo was delivered, I wanted to make sure that the automatic back-up braking system worked as described. My wife was backing up and I walked past the rear of the car. The car did not stop. I tried again. The car did not stop. The person who delivered our car called the Volvo dealership and was told that if my wife had her foot on the brake, that the automatic brake would not work. We tried again without her foot on the brake. I walked past the rear of the car (walking a bit faster) and the car did not stop. We tried again with the same result. Then the dealer said it only works if you're accelerating. After two attempts, the carr did not stop ( I was within 2 feet of the rear bumper when I jumped out of the way) I took the car back to the dealer who checked the car and said that there was nothing wrong. I suggested testing the automatic rear braking system themselves and was told:" it would be too dangerous because someone might get hurt if the car didn't stop." EXACTLY MY POINT I called Volvo Customer Service. The woman to who I spoke told me that she had two Volvos and on at least two occasions when children were behind her car as she backed up-her car stopped! She took down all the information about my car and, said she would turn it over to some quality control section and they would get back to me-that was three weeks ago. Below is a quote that I copied from the Volvo website describing "Cross Traffic Alert with Auto-brake": "Cross Traffic Alert gives you increased awareness of potential road users behind you at the right moment when reversing out of a parking space. It can detect cyclists, pedestrians and vehicles, helping you manoeuvre safely — even when vision to the rear of the car is restricted. Radar units in the car’s rear bumper scan up to 30m to the left and right of the car’s rear for approaching vehicles that are likely to pass behind you. Cyclists and pedestrians are detectable at shorter distances. The driver is alerted by a warning sound from the left or right speakers to correspond with the location of the hazard, and a visual warning in the centre display. . Not only does Cross Traffic Alert help make reversing out of a parking space easier and safer, it also helps to improve safety for other road users, such as cyclists and pedestrians." There are several videos on line demonstrating the Automatic Braking system stopping the car while backing up when a pedestrian is walking in back of the car. I don't think our system works properly and Volvo doesn't give a damn.
