Engine, Electrical & Tire Problems

AVOID ALL TOUAREG VEHICLES. Read the internet on how rotten VW support is. My T is driven gently by my wife. We go through a set of tires every year or so, have had many electrical problems including completely replacing the wiring harness. At 43,000 the engine simply froze. A couple months out of warranty for months owned but within the period for mileage. VW is giving us grief about replacing the engine. I guess they think that it is ok for an engine to blow at 40K. Dealers seem great but you have to deal with VW of America. They are simply terrible. I would look at the internet for VW problems and VWA support before buying ANY VW product. Sorry...I have owned 4 VW's but no more.

There is a lot of reading and getting used to. The transmission is unbelievable with 6 gears and auto or standard shifting. The car is solid and perfect body work and the motor is powerful. Interior is perfect and the dash lights at night are Blue and Red for easy reading. Headlights are excellent with high intensity the brakes are excellent the best yet. There is some residue on the wheels from brake dust but a good washing will fix that. Im very satisfied and so is the wife.

We test drove a Porsche Cayenne in March 2003. It was a good compromise for my husband's dream car and the practicality of a growing family. However, we knew the Toureg would be released soon. We are glad we did because we virtually have the same car as a Cayenne S for $20,000 less! My husband still has a Porsche on his dream car list -- just now he's back to a car for mom & dad someday. . . .

As someone who has been researching and test driving potential replacements for my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee for years, I am very happy I found the Touareg. With air suspension, V-8, premium sound, navigation and more, this car is everything I had hoped for in an SUV. It handles very nicely on the road, is very responsive when it needs to be, very comfortable, great in corners and extremely capable off road.

Had this SUV for a month. Its been to the shop twice already. Ride is comfortable not enough power. Go with the V8. I was displeased with the sales staff at the location where I purchased the vehicle. I caught the sales staff in a few different lies. Lame, just sell the car.

This is a strong entry into the SUV segment for VW. I have my concerns about the long term quality considering the amount and complexity of the deployed electronics. Very fun to drive. Previously owned BMW X5 and the VW beats it in appeal both on-road and off-road

I bought a Touareg after owning an FX35 for three months. The FX35 never felt "right" too sporty in performance and atitude. Test drove a Touareg V6 and fell in love. Great ride - no attitude. Feels solid. Be sure to get the air suspension - makes a big difference in handling/performance. V6 has enough power.

Haven't had it very long, but it is the best designed SUV that I have seen or driven. I drove a Toyota Landcruiser in Africa on several occasions and loved it, but would have liked to have had this T-Reg. Only question in my mind is reliability. All these behemoths get poor gas mileage. We all should have known this when we purchased these heavyweights! Navigation system could use some software changes to make it more like what I have seen in Toyota/Lexus vehicles. The dealer told me Navigation software upgrades are coming. Not many automobiles make me want to go out into the garage to get one last look before going to bed, but this one does!!

I would have chosen another ML 350 but for dealer attitude, they insist on navigation systems and third row seating! Well I know where I live and I don’t plan on having kids. My first 1000 plus miles in Mr. Toe Rags tell me it’s a very nice vehicle. Gas consumption is OK at 17 mpg overall for 1057 miles but it does dip into the sixteen’s and fifteens around my short country commute to work. Yes it’s thirstier than the Mercedes. Quiet and refined it does not get buzzy at speed and it goes fast enough to get expensive tickets. It is a smooth riding, fast performing easy to drive super utility vehicle.

This car IS all that it is cracked up to be. The drive is excellent and and so is the luxurious inside. The GPS is great and really comes in handy. It is a a fantastic car due to its versatility. It is a fantastic luxury SUV as well as an excellent offroad car (I've taken it offroad). The car has a very smooth drive and a lot of power. 310 horse! When you shift it into Sport mode (S) it really can fly. I think this car beats the FX's and the RX330 due to its versatility and price. You get a lot more for the money. The major downside of this car is the fuel efficiency.

No other SUV can touch the interior styling of the Touareg. The quality of parts and materials makes the Lexus RX 330 look cheap. The outside is stylish without looking like aftermarket parts - the RX 330 chrome tail lights - come on! SO HIGHSCHOOLISH. The Tourag is a bit touchy in low speeds and gets 15 mpg, but, those are the only lows. Beats Mercedes, BMW, Lexus and all others. VW is also cool - who needs those other stuckup brands? My Touareg gets looks from all ages. Get one!

After years of driving a Toyota Land Cruiser I opted for something different. Given the generally glowing reviews of this vehicle, I decided to try my first VW. Bad decision. The LC performed above expectations while this vehicle typically disappointed. I've sold this vehicle after four months & bought a new LC (actually a Lexus LX470).

I shopped them all FX35 and 45 ,ML500 too old a design, BMW 4.4 doesn't compare, the only one in the same league was the Land Rover Range Rover at 75 large. For 33k less I've got an equally good on and off road car. Gas mileage is about as I expected am averaging 16 mpg. but I wanted the grunt of the big V8 and I loveit. By the way it runs well on regular. Its a great car and my hats oiff to VW for creating it. It fills a huge void in the SUV fdield, fit finish and build quality are as good as it gets. It drives and handles great as well, and off road its in a league of its own. Can't say enough good things about it.

Buy one before the word gets out! Audi 4.2L 305HP engine (same as A8), Porsche 6 speed, Audi-grade interior, 10 air bags with safety cage, etc... This car with the same configuration in Germany sells for 68k Euro, which translates to $75-80k! You can pick one up for about $40k in the US! This SUV drives like a dream. The V8 with 6-speed is silky smooth and throws you back in your seat when you push it. If you want a super luxury SUV that should sell for $75k at the bargain price of the century, act now!!! And by the way, purchase a 100k warranty for around $1500, and have no reservations!

I tested the X-5, Cayenne V6, MDX, Honda Pilot, Lexus 330 and decided the the Touareg was the overall best V6 suv out there. The interiors are Jaguar/Bentley quality. Great attention to detail and comfort. The v- 6 has enough power for the daily routine. The color selection is better than any other suv out there. The ride and handling are superior. I considered the X5 but thought the ride was too rough and the suv too small inside. The pricing is ridiculous. The Cayenne v-6 is a joke. Go for the V8 if you have to have the Porsche logo. As for the japanese cars, I just dont like the feel and interiors.

Overall a fantastic car. I love driving it and catching other drivers taking quick glances at it. Spectacular fit and finish. the AT is a little frustrating as it's not more aggressive in "normal" mode and the gas mileage is horrendous in sport. I would definately buy it again, and if I had the $5000 extra the V8.

This VW definately puts the "SPORT" in SUV. It handles like no other on the market, is luxurious, fast, and outright fun. Not many SUV's can claim that. This SUV does not seem to suffer the dreaded "soccer mom" curse that most of the competition does, thanks for not putting in a 3rd row seat! The build quality, and fit/finish are on par with the best of anything on the road today. Absolutely no regret in getting this vehicle. I have other VW's, and will continue to buy them. No other manufacturer makes anything that does all things so well. Great job VW!!

The Touareg has been a wonder addition to our family. Given the competition this vehicle does most of everything you can ask for when compared to it's peers. The interior is timeless, it rides better than most luxury cars on the highway, and has been thoughfully designed in almost every way. We've not seen another SUV, foreign or domestic, that compares to the VW in terms of quality and design.

I'm loving my 2004 Touareg. It handles great up here in the Northland's snow and ice. I have no complaints with the V-6 and would recommend it over the V-8 unless you're a speed demon. I traded in my old BMW 525 and Yukon Denali to consolidate into one car--this is the perfect comprimise. I can get around in the snow, do some light to moderate off-roading and still feel the road behind the wheel of a German sedan. It's the best of all the "luxury SUV's" I've driven. Didn't get the nav package. Undertand a better one is coming out in '05. Would have liked the XM Satellite Radio option if it were available.

Volkswagon has really designed a winner. I compared with the Volvo XC90, Lexus RX 330, MB ML430 and the VW knocked them out. Great on-road manners and a demon in the sand and mud. Excellent fit and finish. One major complain...the air conditioner went out twice. First time within the first 100 miles and again two weeks later, both times on road trips. VERY HOT AND VERY FRUSTRATING!

I bought the Touareg for my wife after the birth of our first child. We were looking for a safe car which was stylish and fun to drive. We looked at the BMW X5 and the Acura MDX. The Touareg by far was the most economical, stylish and quality vehicle that we evaluated. It also was not a mammoth vehicke like the X5. The vehicle came with several standard features which were only expensive options on the BMW. Even with Navigation, the vehicle price was about 4K lower than the Acura and about 12K lower than the BMW.

I was one of the first buyers of this Touareg and I love this car. The drive has a totally smooth feel to it. This includes smooth suspension and smooth acceleration. This car has power! (310 horse to be exact) You can take this car up an almost vertical hill with loose dirt easily and then drive on a smooth road...SMOOTHLY. probably the only car that is this all around. The inside is totally comfortable and spacious.
