THINK TWICE
What a beautiful sporty suv that really hauls and is fun to drive. But be very wary, I have this car for almost 2 years and only have a little over 11,000 miles and I have had the suv in the shop more times than any other car I have owned. We have the 19" high performance sport tires, well at 8,000 miles we had to spend over $1,200 on new tires, the wood interior has cracked two times; the rear lights have been replaced twice due to condensation, the air suspension has gone twice leaving me with a $56,000 low rider. All in all I have been very displeased with the mechanical and lack of fuel efficiency. Once our lease is over we will never purchase another VW again. I am tired of loaners.
I'm in love
I bought my Touareg about two years ago after having purchased a flawless Jetta nine years ago (which we still drive and requires very little maintenance.) I love to drive this car- whether down the street to the store out of town for the weekend. The precision handling and comfort have spoiled me, as well as the bells and whistles that come along with a luxury SUV. I have had a few repairs done on the car, but they were all covered by the extended warranty. I would recommend this car to anyone looking for a fun ride for themselves and/or family! We have owned a Toyota 4-Runner and a Ford SUV in the past, and they pale in comparison to this car.
From Audi to VW?
Once I drove this vehicle, all doubts of VW's commitment to style, luxury and power went away. The 310 HP V8 is a welcome difference from most "luxury SUV" V6 or high cost V8 option
The Touareg
Its fast and fun to drive!
Great SUV Great Value
I've had my T-reg for a month and have had zero problems. Premium Plus Pkg. is the way to go. Remote key range is OK 20-30ft, but I don't need it with keyless entry. Handles well for a big (2 1/2 ton) SUV and the V-8 has plenty of power. Ext & Int fit and finish is excellent. More standard features than MDX, LX 470 or Cayenne, for less money. Air Suspension has three different ride settings and three different ride heights. This is an outstanding SUV with a huge bang for the buck.
Best in class...period
This SUV (Premium Plus V8) is the funnest, most comfortable, sporty, luxurious vehicle I have ever driven. The air suspension is worth every penny, not to mention the navigation system that is integrated into the display between the tach and speedo. The upgraded sound system will make you think twice before shutting off the Touareg. The power is incredible and the responsiveness, especially if you put it into "S" (sport mode) is incredible. The sound of the engine and the higher revving shifting (together with placing the damping control on "Sport") make you think you are in a sports car.
Awesome Vehicle
Spent the last week driving my folks' new Touareg V8 and couldn't say enough to really do it justice. I ordered my own today with the V10 TDI scheduled for production early November and delivery for January. Went with the V10 TDI for better fuel economy (24 mpg on the HWY) and increased torque for pulling my boat. Besides, the V10 TDI has won several international awards for its engineering.
it's the small stuff ...
Thoughts after 4500 miles: great initial impression, but as I drove the vehicle daily I found it was the small stuff that bugged me. Wipers chatter & won't effectively interval; in-dash CD occassionally won't eject disk; stereo sounds very poor; always "beeping" to alert you of something; rear entry requires remote electronic release; harsh acceleration; etc ... Traded in a Land Cruiser for this vehicle & it was a mistake.
Worthy of consideration
There is more to this vehicle than it first seems. I have actually taken it offroad on the old Barlow Trail over Mt. Hood! If not for the support by the folks at the dealer, the little niggley things would drive you crazy, things like missing manuals, wrong size wheel center medallions, and a broken carbon canister for the emissions control system. None the less this is the best, the most fun, the most comfortable vehicle I have ever owned.
A Car As it Should Be
I drove many late models and tested a bunch before buying VW T-g. Go with V8. It is a good feeling to drive one of the most powerful and safe cars on the road (counting some of the 18-wheelers too). Like with many others German- designed cars - it is a car "as it should be". Particularly, an SUV as it should be. Poor us, we just didn't know how admirable a real present-day's SUV can be. And poor folks settling for so- called "reliable" Honda/Toyotas "SUVs". Touareg is a car that makes you want to get up in the morning and drive (ironically for some - to work, to earn the monthly payments). Over sudden, I have a new meaning in life
VW Experience
Compared to many others, the appearance caught my eye when shopping for a vehicle. Had planned to buy Toyota, but couldn't deal, and salesman was easy to talk to and arrange a deal when we bought both Touareg and Jetta for cash, no trade. Purchased both and drove home from Saskatoon to BC. Several recalls dealt with at Vernon VW, with staff there just the best! Hard on tires - 4th set at 112000 km! At 114000 both fuel pumps failed - go figure. Vernon VW replaced with goodwill partial warranty. Hope nothing else goes!
Entering 6th year, still love my Touareg
I still love driving my car, and I do drive like the proverbial bat out of hell. I don't know about the "underpowered" reviews, but then again, I upgraded from a Chevy, so it's still a delight to drive. No fit & finish issues. Yes, it costs a lot for an oil change, but they're not JUST changing the oil... there's a whole checklist of things they're doing to ensure your car won't be a rattletrap at the 3 year mark like some other vehicles can be. (My blazer was.) Yes, the headrest obstructed, but they sent a replacement (low-profile) headrest for the middle- free. Recalls, but they always put me in a loaner.
Watch Out
To start with I love this truck! I tis a great design good to drive. The reason for this review is the total lack of any sort of reliability with the unit. Brakes @ $850.00 per axcel I have replace 7 times. Tires maybe 25000 on a good set. Electrical system is absolutely the worst I have ever dealt with. Drive Train, hads to replace the drive shaft linkage at 34500 and the factory wouldn't cover the cost to repair. I cannot tell you how much this vehicle has cost me to own. Never again... Watch Out!
Keeps on Amazing
This is one great SUV. Great on road feel with the air suspension, tons of adjustability and versatility and nice pick up from the v8. the interior is very elegant with nicely appointed leather. Wood trim is not bad and the guages are beautiful. ONly complaint is the stock sound system. I have no problem with the gas mileage as I anticipated it to be bad before I bought. Back seat space isnt great but I mainly keep the seats folded for hauling my dogs.
AWESOME
BEST VEHICLE I HAVE EVER OWNED
Exceeded all expectations
I bought this SUV over the MDX, X5, ML, and XC simply because the VW matches all others in luxury, performance, and quality. Plus it saved me a couple grand.
Stuck in the Sand
Two problems, one do not drive in soft sand, you may have to be towed out and two when folding the back seat down, be sure to move the front seat up. Oops, one more thing, dual air temperature controls should allow for dual air flow not just temperature. Overall,I am very pleased and comfy in my new Toureg.
Great Job VW!
I have not had this Car long But I am Very Impressed with it! It handels Very well and I feel very safe in it.
New Owner
Only having the car a week I can only tell you that it has been A BLAST
Solid Uber Ute for the Money
VW's service is absolutely unacceptable for the quality of their cars. I had a major defect in my 2004 (gas tank) and they treated it like it was a broken sun visor clip. Truly unbelievable, and quite a shame because the Touareg is a heck of a vehicle. Just pray nothing goes wrong with it, which is highly unlikely. The salesman I purchased mine from said 7 out of 10 Touaregs he sells come back to the shop for some reason or another. Most popular problem was with the radio systems.
FUN!!
Great vechicle to drive. I've gotten at least a dozen compliments from people on the road. Powerful V8 and very responive on corners. Can't wait for the snow out here on the Front Range.
TMP's Touareg
I love this SUV. I have had a jeep and a QX4. The Touareg handles like a jeep, rides like a sedan and had no road noise as did the QX4. It is comfortable.
The Best SUV I've Ever Seen
I feel very sorry for the people who grossly overpaid for the Cayenne, X5, and ML 500. The Touareg is an incredible car for an even more incredible value. It features the chassis of Porsche and the engine and interior styling of Audi. Quite simply, it is the best SUV out there. This is just the beginning of great things to come from Volkswagen!
Underrated All The Way.
I've had the Touareg for 7 months now but I still feel in awe walking up to it and getting in. It's a beautiful vehicle. It handles really well. Its cornering, breaking, and acceleration (with the Tiptronic transmission) are great. Two things I'd like to address: 1. its fuel economy isn't that bad on the V6. If you compare it to other SUV's you're getting just about the same if not better MPG than an Explorer or even a 4Runner. 2. It is agile. The reason why it feels sluggish at times is due to the fact that it goes to the 6th gear almost immediately. I see my car in 5th gear entering the freeway; of course it won't have any torque. Learn to downshift. It has awesome features, apples to apples it's the best value ever!
The Best SUV I've Ever Driven
The V8 Touareg is the best SUV I've ever driven. The trip computer is in color!! Everything is right where you need it. I love the NAV and upgraded stereo. My salesman actually took me OFF ROAD and showed me the different features it has (hill descent, locking differential, air suspension) It can do anything a Rover can do for 25000 less!
It's my turn to drive!!!!
We now fight over who gets to drive the best car we've purchased so far. Considered other cars at first and after test driving and considering cost/value, this one wins hands down! This is also our first VW and we love the casual style and attentive service of our dealership.
Worth the Wait
Ordered mine in Oct. 2003 and picked it up on 2-13-04. Have put over 3,000 miles including a trip to the mountains in New Mexico. It is exceptionally comfortable on long trips and handles better than my wife's BMW 325xiT all-wheel drive wagon. It is very stable at high speeds yet performed exceptionally well in the snow, ice, and mud of the mountains. The vehicle has been completely trouble-free from a maintenance standpoint. The V8 performed very well at 9,000'plus elevations.
A new Era for VW.
I stopped in the VW house just after the release of the T-egg just for curiosity. Frankly I did not expect much from a 4x4 VW. I was floored. It was love at first sight. The exterior lines are nicer than the Porsche and with the plush leather seats, real wood inlays and the brushed metal trim, It is on par with Cayanne's interior. This vehicle is loaded with cool features (I'm a gadget guy): This is the most I've enjoyed a new vehicle in many many years. More than my Land- Cruiser, LX470 and Navigator.
SMOOOOOTH........
Just purchaced Touareg after much research, and I am happy to say that It exceeded my expectations. The V6 has plenty of pep (even with 5 passengers) and the transmission shifts smoothly. The car handles smooth and has a great turning radius..The dash looks like an airplane at night..Just came out of an Infinity QX4 and there is no comparison in room and luxury.. Upgraded stereo is awesome..Good job VW.....
Happy, but some concerns
The Toureg is a great auto for VW to enter the SUV market. I can't wait to get the Phaeton!! The quality of the interior is superb. However I am having a lot of problems driving after snowfall, or driving thru deep snow. Snow gets stuck to the undercariage causing a lot of vibration and discomfort. This has happend 3 times this winter and have to go to a spray wash to melt off the snow. Furthermore, had to once take it in to the dealer to remove pact mud/sand from a rear well that caused significant imbalance. My other SUV's never have these problems. Our Tahoe has no problems with high snow, mud etc.
best riding vehicle I have ever owned
Best riding vehicle I have ever owned. Out rides the lexus suv.
fun to drive
the gas mileage sucks but if what you're looking for is a brilliantly constructed luxury car with a big trunk, room for 4 and a convincing sport- ute visage,vw has done it........
My First and Last VW Product.
This is my family's first VW and it will be our last! VW Dealerships will promise you quality customer service and leave you hanging with VW of America. (VWOA) PLEASE READ ALL THE WARNING FROM THE PEOPLE WHO OWN THIS CAR visit all the Touareg problem web sites
toureg v6
This car is great for the money but after driving it for about 6,000 miles we began to notice a vibration we asked vw what it was and they could'nt fix the problem finally after so many people complained about the problem with the v6 they figured out what the problem was it was the drive shaft was off balance and had to be replaced with a v8 drive shaft instead. outher than that we love the car.
It's better than I thought it would be
I've just had it for a couple weeks, and love it.
1st weekend
I had an x5 before this but touareg blows it away, at a much cheaper price!
top thanks to the new Diese engine
with a V10 Diesel enginge this SUV is fantastic.
Fun to drive
This is a strong entry into the SUV segment for VW. I have my concerns about the long term quality considering the amount and complexity of the deployed electronics. Very fun to drive. Previously owned BMW X5 and the VW beats it in appeal both on-road and off-road
Go for it.
This car has grown on me everyday that I've had it for the first week. Even with just the base model v6, it's more vehicle than you could ask for. Quite the nice ride... inside and out! VW has put its mark on this one.
toureg v-8
i like the color combination- off-road gray and the teak interior,i have over 21000 miles now with zero problems, the 4.2 liter v-8 has more than adequate power for this suv. my previous car was an mb 430 and this suv is much better in every respect.
A Super SUV
This is an excellent SUV. I highly recommend it. Glad I bought the V8. Found the V8 to have lots of "extra little features" that the V6 does not offer, or only offers as an option. I really like having the air suspension as well.
new breed vw
AWESOME-SMOOTH RIDE-BEST VEHICLE I HAVE OWNED
Nice, but doesn't pull 7,700 pds.!!!!!!!
It is truley a german made and crafted, you feel so safe. The ride is priceless and handles like a sports car. The price you cant beat with all you get. The porshe is based on the toureg and it is 14 grand more! It was awarded 2004 suv off the year my Motor Trend! I have wattage trouble with powering my trailor!
Hell Yea!
very sexy car...my chicas love it! but the acceleration is poor for a V8
Best Value for Money
I shopped them all FX35 and 45 ,ML500 too old a design, BMW 4.4 doesn't compare, the only one in the same league was the Land Rover Range Rover at 75 large. For 33k less I've got an equally good on and off road car. Gas mileage is about as I expected am averaging 16 mpg. but I wanted the grunt of the big V8 and I loveit. By the way it runs well on regular. Its a great car and my hats oiff to VW for creating it. It fills a huge void in the SUV fdield, fit finish and build quality are as good as it gets. It drives and handles great as well, and off road its in a league of its own. Can't say enough good things about it.
Audi/Porsche luxury SUV for a bargain!
Buy one before the word gets out! Audi 4.2L 305HP engine (same as A8), Porsche 6 speed, Audi-grade interior, 10 air bags with safety cage, etc... This car with the same configuration in Germany sells for 68k Euro, which translates to $75-80k! You can pick one up for about $40k in the US! This SUV drives like a dream. The V8 with 6-speed is silky smooth and throws you back in your seat when you push it. If you want a super luxury SUV that should sell for $75k at the bargain price of the century, act now!!! And by the way, purchase a 100k warranty for around $1500, and have no reservations!
great SUV
nothing comes close to this SUV for the price.
Big Truck, Small Feel. Drinks Gas
I have had my new V8 Touraeg for about 2 weeks now an love it! Lots and lots of power. Good looking interior with attention to detail. Quiet and smooth ride (my old truck was a Ford Explorer). This truck is a lot larger than it looks.
