A great SUV
I just purchased the VW and I love it. I was looking at the Volvo XC 90 and I like the Touareg much better. This car feels solid. The pick up is great considering the weight of the Touareg. I am happy with my choice so far.
Worth the Price!
A Volkswagon for this price???? Yup..., and worth every penny. There's nothing "economy" about this vehicle (certainly not price or fuel economy). But it handles like a sports car, and rides like a luxury car.

TOUAREG - ANYWAY YOU SAY IT - WOW
BEST OF THE BEST WHEN IT COMES TO PERFORMANCE SUVS. THIS IS A POWERPACKED GERMAN ENGINEERED TOURING SUV THAT DRIVES LIKE A DREAM.
The new hottness
I've experienced a dream in this baby. It was like the smoothest car I've ever ridden in. It's comfort and hottness majkes it the best car ever at an affordable price.
Superior SUV
Its exterior styling and its towing capacity sealed my purchase, despite concern over Volkswagen's reliability reputation. Now 2 mos. old with 2,000 miles - so far, no major problems. I do believe that there is significant room for improvement - The location of the cd changer is a joke, $850 for the towing package is a steep price, very poor control layout on the steering wheel, navagation system is terrible, climate control doesn't function well. My vehicle was delivered with a front license plate bracket riveted onto the front bumper and I'm still arguing with the dealership on the removal and repair.
Engine, Electrical & Tire Problems
AVOID ALL TOUAREG VEHICLES. Read the internet on how rotten VW support is. My T is driven gently by my wife. We go through a set of tires every year or so, have had many electrical problems including completely replacing the wiring harness. At 43,000 the engine simply froze. A couple months out of warranty for months owned but within the period for mileage. VW is giving us grief about replacing the engine. I guess they think that it is ok for an engine to blow at 40K. Dealers seem great but you have to deal with VW of America. They are simply terrible. I would look at the internet for VW problems and VWA support before buying ANY VW product. Sorry...I have owned 4 VW's but no more.
Highly recommended for $
As someone who has been researching and test driving potential replacements for my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee for years, I am very happy I found the Touareg. With air suspension, V-8, premium sound, navigation and more, this car is everything I had hoped for in an SUV. It handles very nicely on the road, is very responsive when it needs to be, very comfortable, great in corners and extremely capable off road.
perfect for anything
i 've compared this car to MDX, X5, RX 330, GX 470, FX 45 and XC 90. There was one single category where vw was underperforming . As you expected it is 14-18 mpg. In any other aspect Touareg is equal or better than the best of above cars. i,m thankful to folks from vw for eliminatig 99% of reasons not to have an suv
My Touareg
Excellent ride. Very smooth and luxurious. All of the amenities of the luxury SUV's for $10,000 less. I am very impressed with my Touareg.
Outstanding Vehicle
After years of driving domestic clunkers (last car was Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo - typical Chrysler lousy quality and recalls like leaves in fall), finally broke down and bought an import. So far very pleased with all aspects of vehicle.
Mr Toe Rags
I would have chosen another ML 350 but for dealer attitude, they insist on navigation systems and third row seating! Well I know where I live and I dont plan on having kids. My first 1000 plus miles in Mr. Toe Rags tell me its a very nice vehicle. Gas consumption is OK at 17 mpg overall for 1057 miles but it does dip into the sixteens and fifteens around my short country commute to work. Yes its thirstier than the Mercedes. Quiet and refined it does not get buzzy at speed and it goes fast enough to get expensive tickets. It is a smooth riding, fast performing easy to drive super utility vehicle.
The Touareg-fantastic car
This car IS all that it is cracked up to be. The drive is excellent and and so is the luxurious inside. The GPS is great and really comes in handy. It is a a fantastic car due to its versatility. It is a fantastic luxury SUV as well as an excellent offroad car (I've taken it offroad). The car has a very smooth drive and a lot of power. 310 horse! When you shift it into Sport mode (S) it really can fly. I think this car beats the FX's and the RX330 due to its versatility and price. You get a lot more for the money. The major downside of this car is the fuel efficiency.
dissappointed
Not yet set up to service car.Mine was delivered with faulty a/c and still not fixed for sure.Sub par in town handling.sloppy acceleration from stop or low speeds.
Do not buy!
This was hands down the WORST vehicle I have ever owned. I have driven lots of cars and SUVs, and this one took the cake in bad performance. It's beautiful, especially when you are standing beside it waiting on Roadside Assit because it's DEAD! After 5 alignments in 5 months, being completely dead/towed twice, I had enough. Don't get me started on all the electrical failures, warnings, Service calls, recalls and problems I endured in the 12 LONG months I drove this horrible vehicle. And VWoA is the WORST co. on earth, not caring that they are selling a useless vehicle to unsuspecting people. They do not respond to complaints, and have no intentions of standing behind their horrible vehicle.
Love our Touareg
Love the Touareg before we went to buy it. There are so many features even the salesperson didn't know them all. We have even watched the video twice and are still learning new things. Charlene at Alexandria VW is the best - go see her!
Great buy
I totally loved this new design. I think it was about time VW made an SUV.
Great SUV!
The Touareg handles exceptionally well - feels very solid and is actually a fun SUV to drive (a close 2nd to the FX35). Although this V6 model/options priced out at $39k (a lot for a VW), the features and build quality make it seem like a bargain.
WOW - WHAT A RIDE
This car is fantastic. Got it for my wife, she loves it and I get it on the weekends. DO NOT BUY BMW, LEXUS, or ACURA -- this car is more stylish and has a better ride (AND CHEAPER) than the others.
My
Saw several last year in Europe just as the model was being launched--love at first sight. I couldn't wait for it to hit these shores. Handsome exterior, flawless interior, outstanding build quality, superb handling, reasonable performance from the V6...this car is brilliantly executed in every way. I enjoy the looks I get from other drivers!
My toureg 2004 V6
The only issue is xenon lights are very expensive. I had changed one recently and it was more than $230 . The car is wonderful to drive and comfortable, also safe.Gas mileage is good.
excellent value
It's been a (happy) month since I got my Touareg. The initial built quality is excellent. It looks much better (inside and out) than X5 and is a real SUV when compared to FX35. No major complaints so far.
Luxury in a VW?
With the touareg, VW has arrived. The touareg is the only suv I've owned that I look forward to driving. For the money, it's superior to the X5, ML430, RX330, GX470. I have the V8 model and it has great performance and sound from the exhaust. It's every bit as luxurious as my Audi A8. The future looks bright for VW.
What a fun vehicle to drive!
This vehicle is practically unbeatable - assuming you have the V8 and air suspension option. The ride is smooth and unbelievably quiet, and the V8 gives you TONS of power to accelerate. And it's a 6 speed automatic so all the power is easily reachable when you hit the pedal. I test drove the Toyota Highlander, Nissan Murano, Buick Rendezvous, Lexus RX300, BMW X5, Mercedes M500, Volvo XC90 T6, Porsche Cayenne S, Range Rover, Cadilac SRX, Acura MDX and Infinty FX45 (as well as a bunch of 30- 50K sedans) and I love the Touareg the most.
Great
Very fun to drive, sporty yet refined and stylish!!!
What a Truck!
This is by far the greatest SUV on the market. Customer service is wonderful too!
Incredible Vehicle
I love my Toureg, it has exceeded all my expectations (and then some). This thing tows over 3 and 1/2 tons (outperforms almost every other SUV in towing). I can't wait for the V10TDI Toureg, I should be able to tow my HOUSE with that thing if need-be. I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone in the market for a luxury SUV.
ss
This car is amazing. I can't say anything further I guess you have to test drive it your self to appreciate the technology and safety feature that is touareg posses .. oh and wait a V10 twin turbo diesel version will come to the us as well ... all I can say is Watch out BMW,Merc,GMC,Ford, and any- other far distant competitor out there which I have not mentioned. Ciao ciao.
Touareg WOW
An inexpensive Porsche. Wow, even the 6 has plenty of power and lots of luxury.
Toureg Disappointment
I saw the Toureg at the auto show and loved the looks. But overall, very disappointing. Mileage has been less than expected. Multiple problems with the electrical system-tire pressure warning light won't go out and sometimes the left side head and tail lights won't go out without turning the car on and off several times. I agree completely with the Edmunds review about the peculiar acceleration of the car and handling. I've always had Toyota products before and I wish I had stuck with them.
Good Egg
The Touareg has been a wonder addition to our family. Given the competition this vehicle does most of everything you can ask for when compared to it's peers. The interior is timeless, it rides better than most luxury cars on the highway, and has been thoughfully designed in almost every way. We've not seen another SUV, foreign or domestic, that compares to the VW in terms of quality and design.
I love it!
This thing is great! I love the interior lay-out as much as the exterior! The engine is strong yet silky smooth. The black leather IS smooth and very comfortable and supportive. No problems so far and i dont expect anything to go wrong! I LOVE IT!
Best of SUVs
The craftmanship and quality of superior engeneering placed on a conservative but savage SUV like the TReg.
Snow bound Touareg
I'm loving my 2004 Touareg. It handles great up here in the Northland's snow and ice. I have no complaints with the V-6 and would recommend it over the V-8 unless you're a speed demon. I traded in my old BMW 525 and Yukon Denali to consolidate into one car--this is the perfect comprimise. I can get around in the snow, do some light to moderate off-roading and still feel the road behind the wheel of a German sedan. It's the best of all the "luxury SUV's" I've driven. Didn't get the nav package. Undertand a better one is coming out in '05. Would have liked the XM Satellite Radio option if it were available.
Awe-inspiring SUV
It's an absolutely gorgeous SUV inside and out. If you love VWs and desire an SUV like my wife and I, this is it. We lease an XC90 also and this rides better. Can't wait for the snow here in MI.
great vehicle
Hnadles well, love the performance. Girls love this vehicle. i love this vehicle. And the fuel isn't bad for the type of car it is!
Touareg
This is an excellent vehicle. I enjoy driving this ar where ever I go. It has awesome off road capabilities and is yet so comfortable.
Worth way more than the price tag.
I just got my V8 Touareg home. I've opted for the Nav/SSII, conv. pkg, and bi-xenons as well. I'm looking at a price tag of about $42,000 (for a list of about $45,500). I've driven the recently released BMW X3, the Land Rover Discovery and the Acura MDX. I owned a Tahoe and have been the passenger in a friend's RX330. None of these vehicles even compare to the Touareg. I had so much fun driving this thing. It's a smooth, tight, powerful ride and the interior is as beautiful as the exterior. I've never been more sure about a car purchase before in my life.
this beast is really something
simply the best midsize luxury SUV in the market
More fun then my a6 2.7t
Powerful, handles great.. awesome in the snow. Solid build quality. Overall a great car! Best I've ever owned.
Lives up to the hype
Did extensive shopping to replace my 01 MDX. Shopped the XC90, Range Rover, X5 4.4, Cayenne S, FX series, ML500. The Touareg made the most sense to me, was the best value, and was the best looking of the bunch
a new gem
my only disapointment is that they dont make a diesel version.
Great replacement for my van
Wanted to get away from my van but didn't want to go to a hugh SUV. Touareg was the perfect niche. Got the Air suspension system and Naviational set up. Extremly solid in hard turns (no roll or slop)and lots of pickup and go. Very quiet and smooth shifting. Comfort is very good Plenty roomy and no confined feeling Also my "Homelink" system would not work with my garage door opener. My previous van had the "Homelink" also and it worked perfectly.
Awsome
This is a FANTASTIC SUV!!!
Touareg Tuff
This is simply a finely engineered vehicle. The ride and handle of a luxury vehicle, space of an SUV, interiors like that of a custom cabin cruiser. Theres a lot to like here. The exterior could use a better shape, however, the available colors do make for a great looking vehicle. The placement of interior components is well thought out and standard features were generous.
Great V8
I can't wait to play with this in the winter.
Toureg - You Gotta See This!
I've had the Toureg for about a month now. What a great SUV!!! We originally were going to purchase a Land Rover Discovery, but found the Toureg to be packed with great features in one well laid-out package.
CROSS USA/CANADA TEST DRIVE
Through the good graces of my friend, who owns the local VW dealer (free plug: Montesi VW, North Haven, CT), I was able to pick up my new Touareg at the port and proceed to take a cross country adventure with my kids for almost the entire summer. We gave the Touareg a good test, driving 10,600 miles over six weeks, about 200 of those off-road. All I can say is that when I find a woman I like as much as this car, I'll consider a relationship. Thoroughly fun on road and off-smooth at speeds of 100mph, and the Nav system is fantastic. I ran into a Cayenne owner who was dismayed that he didn't wait for the Touareg. Need I say more?
Worthy of consideration
There is more to this vehicle than it first seems. I have actually taken it offroad on the old Barlow Trail over Mt. Hood! If not for the support by the folks at the dealer, the little niggley things would drive you crazy, things like missing manuals, wrong size wheel center medallions, and a broken carbon canister for the emissions control system. None the less this is the best, the most fun, the most comfortable vehicle I have ever owned.
Entering 6th year, still love my Touareg
I still love driving my car, and I do drive like the proverbial bat out of hell. I don't know about the "underpowered" reviews, but then again, I upgraded from a Chevy, so it's still a delight to drive. No fit & finish issues. Yes, it costs a lot for an oil change, but they're not JUST changing the oil... there's a whole checklist of things they're doing to ensure your car won't be a rattletrap at the 3 year mark like some other vehicles can be. (My blazer was.) Yes, the headrest obstructed, but they sent a replacement (low-profile) headrest for the middle- free. Recalls, but they always put me in a loaner.
Watch Out
To start with I love this truck! I tis a great design good to drive. The reason for this review is the total lack of any sort of reliability with the unit. Brakes @ $850.00 per axcel I have replace 7 times. Tires maybe 25000 on a good set. Electrical system is absolutely the worst I have ever dealt with. Drive Train, hads to replace the drive shaft linkage at 34500 and the factory wouldn't cover the cost to repair. I cannot tell you how much this vehicle has cost me to own. Never again... Watch Out!
