Nice Car
The Touareg is a nice car, Very elegant interior. The rear visibility is better than in the cayenne, as well as having the same engine and transmission for $10,000 less, but was still a tough descision. The Navigation system is nice how it gives voice prompts, but nag screens for 'safety' become annoying to passenger. Park Beepers too sensitive. With all of these good things, there were still setbacks. Phantom sunroof would only go in direction of selector (wouldnt stop) when at target (weird!). Mileage was around 12 for several months the Xenon Lights will occasionally go 'out' and rain sensor faulty.
04 Touareg Review
Dealerships not well prepared at launch with knowledge of vehicle, technical support or parts support and inventory. Vehicle is most pleasing due to interior design, exterior design, overall comfort / ride comfort and extreme capability off-road and in snow. The combination of interior & exterior design and appearance, fit and finish combined with quiet, comfortable ride together with outstanding off-road capability and very respectable street performance put it squarely in direct competetion with the much more expensive Range-Rover.

Drivers Wanted
All VWs are cars for Drivers. Touareg is no exception. One needs a Driving skill and focus to appreciate this car. The V8 is so powerful that a gentle but precise push on gas in needed to roll it from stop (the so- called "hesitation" problem). The ride is so quiet that air is heard flowing off vents. And one needs to buckle up before switching the ignition and fix tire pressure between weather seasons. These pretty much cover for the "lemon" issues. Then just Drive! This Car is amazing to Drive!
04 V8 Touareg
The doors on the car do not always close when shut and remain ajar about 50% of the time, unless slammed really hard. Some of the door handles are also remaining in the open position (or out) when released. This also causes the doors to not shut properly. The automatic shifting doesn't always shift into the 6th gear under all circumstances. It will shift into 6th gear if the shifter is moved ( to the right) into the shiftable transmission mode. Overall if the longterm relaibility is excellent I'd buy another Touareg. Bob Mc Vermont
Looks Good, but Always in the Shop
We bought the Volkswagen Touareg because it was a nice looking, comfortable, and easy driving SUV - without being HUGE in size. From DAY 1, this car has been nothing but trouble! Nothing that has caused it to stop running, but stupid annoyances that cause it to always be in the shop. In 2 years the car still isn't 100% corrected. If they find the problem, they can't get the parts. There is one item I've been waiting 2 years for (yes, since I picked up the car). My advice: Look at something else until they get all the bugs out. Even now, in 2006, VW can not tell me they have all the bugs worked out of the new Touaregs.
Junk!!!
I wish I could rate this thing lower than a 1 on reliability. Tire PSI warning system, updates etc... It drinks gas and it is ALWAYS in the shop. I did'nt even make it home the 1st day before I had to take it back for the Tire Warning System, and it has not gotten any better. Should you be on a first name basis with ALL of the service writers BEFORE THE FIRST OIL CHANGE!! Shame on you VW, shame on you for selling me this junk car and not even making a concerned effort to fix the monster you created! This will be my last VW ever.
sucks
engine light on after 1300 miles, took 8 days to get back. door locks only work sometimes, worst gas mileage ever, not fun to drive, buzzer for lights being on after ignition turned off still beeps sometimes even though lights are off, and little orange light in front still remains on for some stupid reason
VW 4.2L Touareg
Solidly built and fun to drive ith excellent handling. I've not taken it off rode- yet. Fuel consumption is as advertised- a true gas hog. Front seats are on a bit of a platform limiting putting your left foot back which is my only complain about comfort. Gauges are too small and hard to scan while driving. Gadgets are plentiful- reading the manual is a must.
Touareg Troubles
I've been reading about all the Touareg troubles and hope that I don't encounter these problems in the future. I have only 10,000 miles on mine and have only expeirenced trouble with the tire pressure systems false readings and mis-aimed headlights which I had to fix myself. The excessive tire wear is a common problem with all T-regs and Cayennes due to their weight of 5,200+lbs. The same goes for the brakes on both vehicles. The electrical problems are hit and miss. I'll be curious to see if the new Q7 will have any of these same problems? Good luck!
Touareg
The basic vehicle is well engineered, but the creature conforts and some controls are not user freindly. Auto door locks are not reliable. Chime for seat belt annoying. Comes on as soon as you start car. Chimes when car is in park. Rear hatch will not unlock with door locks, then after you unlock it and the reclose it, it locks again.
Good Looking Manufacturer Buyback
Factory Buyback. Our 2004 Touareg was great looking, great off-road (low-range rocks!) but was a miserable experience until the day VW (was forced) to buy it back: The V6 engine is weak and sucks down fuel. My new BMW X5 4.4i gets much better gas mileage. The Touareg had tire pressure monitoring failures from the day we bought it. We had trim and rattle problems, squealing rotors, remote lock/unlock issues, A/C windshield fogging problems, and a wiper blade that flew off in a rainstorm. 23 shops days in under 10,000 miles. After three repeat repair attempts and filing Lemon law, VW tried lawyering out of it until losing the arbitration. PS - I love my new BMW X5...Are you listening, Zieter?
Great fun but suspect electronics
We love how this car handles and performs. The engine is responsive and the ride is quiet. The nav system is easy to use. Fabulous in the snow. Down sides: The flat tire sensor has been replaced twice because of persistent failures. The battery cable was replaced. Note that this car has a battery that can't be jump started or used to jump others. A stepper motor for the power steering was replaced because it was causing seize ups on tight turns. Overall I'd say this will be a great short term car, but the reliability for this first year model is low and I'm glad we're leasing it just for the length of the warranty.
2004 Touareg
I only drive a few miles to my studio daily, but about 12 times a year I go to the Mojave Desert to do landscape photography. I find the Touareg an excellent ORV for my purposes and consider it a unique vehicle for its combination of highway manners and off-road capability. The low MPG is understandable given the vehicle's weight, but could be better.
I wish!
Amazing SUV, I would love to own several for my whole family!

Best I've Ever Had....
This SUV incredible. Basically, this vehicle is OVER-engineerd and UNDER-priced.
Troubles in Germany?
We have the nav system, air-suspension, premium 2 pkg- essentially every option. PROBLEMS: The nav/CD system went out-we are having the third one installed. 1 of the headlights quit working twice-now fixed. One of the speakers went out-now fixed. The remote has abismal range. There was a whistling in the rear door- fixed after 3 trips to the dealer. Problem with the rear window latch causes the interior lights to remain on- being fixed as well. Our dealer has been very responsive, but in the three months we have had the car, it has been in the shop 7 times. Wondering if we got a lemon.
Poor Quality
Purchased on a Sat. afternoon. Within the 20 mile home I already had problems. First the heated seats didn't work, the CD player broke, the head lights were not aligned correctly, the steering wheel was not top centered. The car had a bad shake at 70 MPH and pulled to the right. After I got home I noticed paint discoloration on the lift gate. I did more research online and found this to be a problematic vehicle. See club touareg.com. It is filled with horror stories of poor quality, numerous breakdowns, and little available parts to fix your vehicle. I brought it back to the dealer I bought mine from on Monday and got my money and trade-in back.
Too Much for too Little
This truck is supposedly built on the Porsche Cayenne platform. It is okay, but it came from the factory with alignment problems that VW knew about, ignored, and refused to pay for. This ate up the crappy tires it came equipped with. It also has crappy brakes with poor stopping power despite ABS - I've had many near misses. Buy a car the manufacturer stays behind. There are better options out there for the money.
Do Not Buy A Touareg - Ever
This is the most poorly build cars I have ever bought. It spends most of it's time in the VW repair shop where most of the mechanics know little about how to make the necessary repairs. It's been towed numerous times due to electrical issues and recently had it's 4th battery installed. I had new front brakes put on at 50K which cost $1,000, replaced the original tires at 30K, have a back seat that locks, have a $700 issue with the tire pressure system, have another fault light on related to the air suspension, have a xenon headlight that is problematic. My list of issue is never ending. Please don't waste your money on a Touareg. I'll never buy another VW. The Touareg is a LEMON.
GREAT
NICE CAR! BETTER FIT AN FINISH THAN OUR JAG XKR. BETTER PERFORMANCE, RIDE, ETC THAN THE ML430 WE TRADED. VERY QUIET AND A GREAT RIDE WITH THE AIR SUSPENSION.
Bought the wrong Vehicle
I picked the VW over the Acura MDX and Lexus. I thought it was cooler and more sporty. Had I known how unreliable it would be I never would have leased it. The automatic climate control would stop functioning after about two hours of driving. On long road trips, I freeze when it is cold and roast when it is hot. Just what I wanted from a $38,000 vehicle. VW can't find the problem. The front tires are showing excessive wear on the inside edge. VW service admits to seing the problem on other Touaregs, but doesn't know the cause. The "check headlight range control" warning light required three trips to the dealer to get fixed.
monster fun
Handles like a sedan, precise steering, and great power. Drives better than an X5 - love the 4-wheel drive and diff locks; most luxurious interior for the buck. Too much steering wheel real estate taken up by 4 cruise control buttons that are rarely used. Owner's manual is poor: some things are at odds with reality and the index is about as useful as LA freeway signs. Few accessories available yet.
awsome ride
best luxury suv on the market.period
Poor Performance for 310HP v-8
Very poor performance off the line for a v-8, Seems to spend most of its energy shifting through the gears (six speed). Leave plenty of room before you pulling out in front of on going traffic!!! Or it can get scary. My Toyota V-6 will run circles around it. No way to open the hatch with a manual key. Hatch locks evertime you close it. If I want it locked, I'd like to be the one to do it!! Lose the rear head rest - driver can't see over them. Funky key - should detach the FOB from the key.
2004 Touareg
Really enjoy the handling, the sound system and the performance of the vehicle. I had to relearn how to drive because it is not very hard to average 7 miles per gallon if you accelerate quickly often.
My nicest VW to date
Purchased the Volkswagen Touareg V8, as I already drive a Jetta TDI. Its fuel economy has been around 16+ mpg, as advertised. For a 5,300 pound vehicle, I cannot complain. It has massive power, sticky cornering on all its season tires, a great 6 speed tiptronic transmission, and all of the creature comforts that I have never known in a Volkswagen. The best ownership factor is not seeing one every mile on the road, like the Ford Explorer, BMW X5, etc. Always get the "high five" from other VW drivers. I just easily handled 10+ inches of fresh snowfall on back roads of the Eastern Shore of VA. I was the last vehicle into my community before the roads were deemed impassable.
Missed the mark
Nice fit and finish. Porsche is going to hold value WAY better. VW is better looking. 1: No passenger airbag shutoff 2: No reclining rear seats. That was dumb.
never again
superb handling and performance is easily forgotten considering the problems its had. 15 months and 18k miles later it has been in the shop at least 8 times for more than 30 days. Service department was friendly but inept at fixing any of the electric malfunctions that plague this vehicle. I bought early and should have expected problems with the new model, but now 15 months later there is no excuse for not being able to fix the same issues I brought it in for within days of driving it off the lot. Do not buy one of these unless you have a satisfaction or money back guarantee from the dealer and at least 30 days to drive it before you pay.
THE BEST EVER
I bought this SUV because of all the good things I have heard. I will buy another because if what it is. THE BEST
watch out BMW, Infiniti, Lexus.. TOUAREG
Well, i was in the market for a new SUV and i looked at the following... BMW X5, Infiniti FX45, Lexus RX330 and VW Touareg V8. Oh my God, there is no comparisson.... After driving a V8 Touareg, that was it.. Sign the paper and purchased the car. X5, FX45 and RX330 watch out, there is new cat in town. Jeff V8, Nav, Xenon, Convinence Package
LOVE IT
Have Had It For About a week Now.....Just So Much Fun To Drive. About 20 people already have came up to me and asked what is that after i tell them they say that it is one hot lookin SUV!!!
Definetly a good Purchase
I had a vw passat, but changing to the touareg it has kept my face smiling since the day i got it. is an amazing vehicle.
Great and smooth ride on &off the road
Have the car for 2 weeks, great ...
Best German SUV on the market
Just purchased a Touareg and I love it. Also checked out the BMW X5, and the Mercedes M class. The Touareg was hands down my favorite. This is my 3rd VW. I also had a Jetta and a GTI.
I Love this SUV!!!
It has been a wonderful ride! This car is very comforable, very economy and very luxurious. I enjoy the handling and especially the off-road capability it has. Helps a lot especially during flooding.
Best Vehicle ever Conceived
I have had my Touareg for 2 week and put app 2,000 miles on including a vaction trip. I am simply speechless. It's an SUV when you want it be. It's a performance sportscar when you want it to be. It's a highway cruiser when you want it to be. And all of this without compromising. I have had several dozen people wave at me (or the car) and even more stangers begging me for a test- drive. This car beats my three previous Jeep Gr. Ch. and my wife's Audi Allroad
Triumph Of Human Ingenuity...
That mankind is capable of producing such a technologically advanced automotive machine must be recognized at the highest levels of human achievement. Safety, Performance, Style, Function, and Luxury was refined with such careful thought and precision. After test-driving an ML500, BMW X5, Lexus GX, and R.Rover, this is the vehicle of choice for my new family, at any price. The Touareg feels like the best of my Porsche and my wife's Mercedes plus more. Marlboro man waved us down today, for a look. He grinned and asked "How many horses?" '310', I said. In a puff of smoke, he replied "Man, that is a beautiful machine!"
SIMPLY AWESOME! BEST SUV EVER!
I get more compliments on this car than any other car I ever owned. Everyone who sees it says they hadn't realize it looked that good. I have never had this much fun driving a car! And I thought my Passat was awesome. BRAVO VW, BRAVO!
Freaky
We were adjusting the height of the car so my grandma could get in and the darn air suspension would not work! After attempting to fix it for 15 min. or so we gave up and went inside and all of a sudden the car went down after we were inside. Talk about safety here, what if something had suddenly come under the car, like my kid. And I feel like a soccer mom driving the thing, it looks like a mini-van.
The Best Don't Settle For The Rest
Just purchased my Touareg today and I have put 120 miles on it. Cant stop driving it. The way it hold the road is like my 01 Lincoln Ls that I traded in. If you are looking for the best Suv out STOP YOU HAVE FOUND IT!!!!
Drive one, you'll be hooked!
I just purchased this car on Oct 11, 2003 and I couldn't be happier. My husband and I literally looked and drove 20 different SUV's. It came down to the MDX or the Touareg. And based on price and standard options the Touareg won hands down! Definetly go drive one!
BEST VEHICLE EVER
I love this truck....Nothing better...Revolution in vehicle design
best car in the world
This is an amzing car. It has everything i need. Even though it has a bad fuel economy,, the 26 gallon tank makes up for it. My kids and wife love it. It's Amazing.
BEST TRUCK IVE EVER OWNED
THIS TRUCKS FIT AND FINISH IS THE FINEST IVE SEEN. THE HANDLING AND RELIABILITY IS THE BEST IVE EVER EXPERIENCED IN ANY VEHICLE I HAVE OWNED
Excellent SUV!
We've had our V6 Touareg for about a month now and absolutely love it! It's our first VW vehicle and selected after carefully looking at the Lexus GX470. For $10K less and a better rating by Car and Driver it was an easy decision. Actually like the exterior better than the sister car the Cayenne. Excellent experience with the Sales and Service Team at Duke Gold's Speedway VW in Indy!
what next?
allready broken and towed on carrier truck ,got stuck on "park" position.Hope yours is stiil drivinng well.
very nice suv
Best riding and quitest suv I have driven
Helluva Car
After 2,000 miles, car is just great. Have Audi A8 with similar engine. Both awsome. However, shifting from D3,D2,D1 or back up again, car goes into "no where land". Punch the gas, nothing. Also, nobody can figure out how to install XM Satellite Radio.
My Touareg
I bought this car on vacation, not knowing much about it, I drove over 1000 mile home and was wounderfully surprised at the ride and handling on the mountain roads of West Virginia. The gas milage is about what I expected for a 4 wheel drive. I used to driving a Ford Expedition and am very satisified with the overall performance and it was $20,OOO less than the Cheyann which I was looking at.
Wonderful SUV
After seeing the Toureg I tried to not to fall in love with it. But once I test drove it I was a gonner! I am still being amazed by some of the thoughtful features I continue to discover each time I drive it. This is the SUV Mercedes should have built.
