I swore I'd never buy one. Too expensive, too unreliable. Well, in a pinch, a tornado red SE Jetta jumped out at me at the dealer on an evening I had gone to see a different car. Over the last 3 months and 6,000 miles I've had a mostly positive experience. This is a compact sedan with a solid build quality feel. The interior and trunk room, along with the ride, are more like a midsize sedan, but the parking and handling are more like a compact. VW found a great balance here. It's really the perfect size car. Few cars find this balance, except maybe Dodge Avenger/Chrysler 200, and I wasn't about to buy one of those! If you have a turbo you'll also see why I entitled the review, "The Red Rocket." It drives like a V6 (at minimum) and still returns 40 MPG. Visibility is great. Car is great looking, with classic, timeless VW looks inside and out. Seats are firm but comfortable, and the heated seats rock. The seat bottom and back both heat, not just the bottom like a lot of cars. I'm not without complaints, though. The worst so far is maintenance costs. Even with no true "problems," every ounce of preventative maintenance will cost more on this car because of special oil, filters, etc. - many of which are proprietary and cannot be obtained other than from VW. I do hear some squeaks and rattles from time to time. I also have issues with my stereo, the AUX will randomly shut off and I have to go in and turn it back on. This happens about once a week. Not a huge problem, but an annoyance. Display between the instrument panel gauges is hard to navigate without using the manual. Dashboard and interior door plastic reminds you that it's an economy class car also. It's more like what you'd expect in a low-end Chevrolet than anything with a German nameplate. Overall, this has surprised me and has been a great commuter car with the comfort and fuel economy. The powertrain is also amazing. At this point, longevity and reliability will be the determining factors as to whether this will go down as a great or a lousy car for me. Crossing my fingers for the best, hoping for many happy years, but if it turns into a stereotypical European money pit, it's back to Japanese cars for me!

After a month after I had the car at the dealership for an A/C issue, the engine light came on while driving. The car was towed to dealer and at less then 60K miles I am told the valve spring broke and got sucked into the engine. The engine is CXCA. $17K to fix!!!!!!

Poor A/C System

I purchased a 2015 Jetta SE, new, in October of 2015. As soon as the weather was warm enough for me to need my A/C, I noticed that every time I would travel long distance on the interstate, my A/C would stop blowing cold air. At one point, I pulled over and had someone look under the hood only to see the A/C components were frozen. Once I would let them thaw out, it would blow cold again for a few minutes, until it would freeze up again. I brought it in to the Lafayette LA dealership three times for the same issue only for them to tell me that they....CHECKED AND FOUND COMPRESSOR PRESSURE FLUCTUATING ON LOW SIDE AND COMPRESSOR PUMPED DOWN TO 20 LOW SIDE COMPRESSOR IS ACTUALLY COOLING TO WELL CAUSING FREEZE UP . REPLACED THE AC COMPRESSOR AFTER CONSULTING TECH 20. RECHARGED AND RECHECKED ALL IS OK NOW. It still continues to do the same thing, and now they are telling me that I am not running my A/C correctly and that it "states in the manual" how to properly use the A/C. I can also feel air coming out of the area where my radio and temperature controls are located. I've never needed a manual to know how to use my A/C, Ive always just used it and I have never had this problem in any other vehicle that I have owned. I also have had to add anti freeze to my car twice since I have purchased my Jetta, a year and a half ago. I was told that they checked it and there was no leak, but that it was normal for that to happen sometimes.....!!! Now I am having issues with my seat belt alert going off while I am wearing my seat belt, and since my last scheduled maintenance, my car sometimes acts like it doesn't want to start, and my sunroof doesn't always close the first time that I try to close it. VW has yet to find anything wrong with any issues that I have had with my car, and their service manager was not at all pleasant to deal with.

Overall I love this car. The new 1.8t is very quick and provides outstanding fuel economy. The ride and handling are considerably better than the Kia I traded it in for it. Where it comes up short are the cheap looking and horribly uncomfortable car seats that come standard on the 15 SE. I found a gel pad that pretty much takes care of the problem. I guess it was cost saving reasons that caused VW to go away from the nicer leatherette seats that previously came on the car but it's a real turn off.

I bought this car with 30,000 miles on it and in less then a year I have put a very much appreciated 42,000 miles on it. It's sporty and fun to drive. It handles well in turns at speeds up to 70 and brakes really good. I get 27-30 miles to the gallon on gas with a speedometer of 160 and I have gotten it up to 120, although it gets a little light on the handling at that speed, it will do it. It's great for quick handling in traffic and easy to park, but has a few blind spots making it hard to see when backing out of a car spot or changing lanes, namely, the head rest. It does have quit a bit of road noise but over all, it's a great commuter vehicle. This is my first sports car, I've always been a truck guy but I really like this Jetta. Good investment I think.

My wife was in need of a car, and we had 7 days to car shop. She insisted on a manual transmission. We looked at the Accord Sport (excellent car, a bit to big for her taste), Mazda 3 with the base engine (anemic/cheap) and a Subaru WRX (amazing). We already have a BRZ, so we decided the extra expense of the WRX was unnecessary. There were only two 1.8TSI 5 speed cars in Houston at the time, and the first one I test drove was already purchased when I came back a second time to buy. The second test drive sold me on the car. The engine has a beefy flat torque curve, and it's probably underrated. It can produce "neck snapping" torque that can move the car to where you want it. The car does not come with a TC off button. Surprisingly, with aggressive driving in low speed sharp turns, the traction control allows for an appropriate amount of wheel spin to get you around quickly, and the corrections don't slow you down too much. Its rare that you find 15" wheels on a new car, and I greatly appreciate them. They do well on rough roads, and overall comfort. The 15" wheels also fit more than adequate brakes. Up there with the brilliant engine is a phenomenal suspension. There is very little slop in the suspension, and it is tuned well. It's extremely comfortable and can handle rough terrain like a champ. Another thing it does well is maintain stability through high speed corners. It hunkers down and there is a good amount of grip, and it can be driven smoothly at a nice pace. Compared to Japanese/Korean luxury cars I have recently driven, I prefer the Jetta's suspension, and for that matter, the over all comfort. The cabin is vault like. The only thing lacking in this base model is the front seats. I find there is not enough lumbar support, and sometimes when I'm moving about, the construction of the seats feels cheap. On the positive side, the fabric is durable and the heaters work well. The clutch on this car is pretty light, and I'm not sure if its a VW thing, but it feels weak. It doesn't grab as well as the sports cars I have driven. It has hill start assist which is helpful, but on a big hill, I find myself using twice as much clutch as I need to use in my BRZ. The gear shift has a vague feeling to it, but once you hit gear, there is a bit of a satisfying engagement. I have probably shifted into 3rd instead of 1st about 5 times over the past two years, and stalled, easy to do with the "light" clutch. The overall value is questionable. I think the trade in value is around $12,000, and I paid $18,000 OTD interest free. Still, at that price, I don't think the power, and overall quality feel of this car can be matched. Not considering the new Civic, which was not available at the time of purchase. But with max torque across the board, this sleeper is a blast to drive, and you can surprise some big bad wolves for a 1/2 a second. This is a sub 7 second 0-60 vehicle. I'm hoping to keep this for 100,000 miles or more, but I will probably tire of the manual transmission in traffic. We have achieved 43 mpg on a tank of gas on the highways traveling 75 mph+ (wife was driving). In town I believe it gets somewhere above 30 mpg. With just me city driving on a tank, I returned 27 mpg, but I stay in the boost. It's addicting.

The interior room of the Jetta is pushing the size of a mid-size car, especially the rear seats. I'm 6'4" and my 5'11 son can sit behind me comfortably without nagging me to move the seat up. The car handles confidently at high speeds; I can tell this was built for the Autobahn. It seems to be more sure-footed the faster you go. The acceleration of the 1.8 turbo is exceptional. Granted, a good-sized V6 would be able to pull away, but I've gotten out of some tight spots because my car had the yank to put me ahead of cars and trucks whose drivers were probably playing Bubble Witch on their phones. To be honest, I am a bit concerned about the long-term reliability though. Compared to a Honda or Toyota, I have a feeling it might be more costly in the long run. Time will tell. Some people seem to have really good experiences; others, not so much. For now, it seems to be very solid. No rattles or squeaks. It's more fun to drive than a Corolla or a Civic, and it's much roomier, so I'm happy for now. I'm going to take the advice of other VW owners--stay on top of maintenance. German cars don't seem to handle neglect well.

I recently bought a 2015 Jetta S 2.0 5 speed manual. My previous cars have been 2002 Z-28 M6, 04 GTO M6, and 06 GTOM6. I am used to performance, but I was looking for an economical car. After reading the reviews, I was expecting a slow as molasses car. I was surprised. This 4 cylinder is sprity. It revs effortless through the gears. This engine lives over 2000 RPM and it does have some acceleration power 2000-3000 RPM. I havent done any ful throttle runs though. Below 2000 RPM, the engine has no power. But run this engine as it should with RPM, and it is peppy. I have actually found myself very much enjoying driving this car and running through the gears.

Very fun car to drive it does not do so well on mileage when you have the A/C on and get on it but still has good power even with the air on. Handles terrific for the size of the car and very comfortable inside.

I know... cheesey title. But, the car has been great. We bought it off Carvana in March of this year and have been quite happy with it. Driving Impressions: This sucker is quick. It wants to go and it wants to do so as quickly as possible. Touch the gas pedal and it takes off with a confident whooosh! That can be a bad thing sometimes - cops, necks of passengers, etc. The 6A is a great automatic especially in manual mode. I wouldn't say the shifts are quick but they are smooth and that's more important for me. It's a family sedan, not a Porsche. This is also extremely economical. I use the Fuelly app to track service costs (of which there have been none) and gas mileage. In 3,134 miles of use, we are averaging 32 mpg. Most of the time, we are driving around town. This is the 1.8L turbo gas engine here not the TDI. No need for the diesel with this car. It's bloody frugal. Interior Comfort: The seats are typical VW firm but the cloth on them is soft. The driver's seat could use a bit more lumbar for me but, my wife is the one that drives this most often as I have a Subaru Outback for my daily driving. She loves the seat and has no complaints. Even with cloth, VW fitted them with 3 position seat heaters. The 3 levels are equivalent to warm, hot, and boil on the butt of the sun. I usually just use warm or hot. My wife likes the "boil of the sun" setting. Too hot for me. It feels like I'm sitting in lava. The car has the basic radio but is wired for Sirius XM which we have had in every one of our family cars since 2006. It also has a single disc CD player and an AUX port. In the center console, it has an adapter for the old 12 pin iPod of which I have. But, the iPod died last year. I still have it though. I'll replaced its battery and see if that brings it back. The trunk is huge as is the back seat. I have long legs on my 6'2" frame and I fit back there quite nicely. Nitpicks: The trip meter and the clock cannot be reset. The button near the gauge cluster doesn't work. The clock being wrong (2 hours and 45 minutes fast) is the biggest issue we have. Overall Rating: I really like this car. We'll have it for as long as we can and then, my wife has said numerous times, she wants a new Jetta afterwards. Maybe an SEL or GLI. The only other car we have bought back to back is a Tiguan, and those were both new. This Jetta is pretty freaking Super Excellent. Update Dec 2024 Coming up on almost 3 years of ownership, the car is still as reliable as the Sun. I still drive it daily on my "massive" commute, 1.6 miles each way. It still gets incredible mileage. The check engine light came on a couple of weeks ago. A circuit is getting too much current.. Car still runs great. It runs best on gas from Costco. It gets near 40 mpg on the highway and feels peppier off the line from a light. I am still only filling up once a month making it very economical to own. I just have to get the CEL fixed. One major drawback: The resale value of the car is garbage. The Jetta is the only gas-powered sedan left in the VW lineup. They sell a ton of these cars because they are so cheap. While there are no weird rattles and excessive wind noise, the car just feels cheap. The rear torsion beam is uninspiring but I do have a sizable cargo area as a result. The dash is hard plastic. It doesn't crack in the sun and it don't have any weird gaps in the seams, it just feels like a cost-cutting measure. It lacks refinement. I have owned a 2001 Jetta Wagon, a 2005 Jetta GLS sedan, and a 2006 Jetta 2.5 S. All of these cars felt and drove so much better than this one. They were more engaging and fun to drive. The materials inside with high quality with soft, yet supportive seats. The MK4 Jettas had so many more features. 5-position heated seats compare to 3-position seat heaters now. I had more control over how warm I could make my seat on cold mornings/days. In my current car, I can choose between #2 where it's tepid or #3 where it's lava. The MK4 had an ingenious visor above the rear view mirror, it had far better suspension design, allowing it to soak up little bumps in the road while staying pretty neutral in the corners. That wagon is still one of the best cars I've owned in terms of blending absolute practicality and being really fun to drive in canyon roads. If I were to re-rate this car, after nearly 3 years of ownership, the interior would get 3 stars while the rest are still 5 stars, for the most part.

Purchased a 2015 Jetta SE with 26k miles , at 28k need a new engine. Used as a commuter car, no heavy handling, just broke. Initial interest was because I had two prior Jetta’s and found them reliable. Not anymore!!

I just bought my 2015 Jetta on September 7th, 2018, from a dealership in Glen Burnie, MD. I have already put $191.47 into this vehicle for an alignment. I will also have to put $757.09 toward fixing the broken Bluetooth module! I am beyond irate. I love this vehicle, but I upgraded to a new vehicle to AVOID putting loads of money into something! Especially something I JUST purchased! As a single mom, I dont have the luxury of dropping damn near $1000 toward a vehicle that I already pay on monthly.

Poor acceleration in the city: heavy car with auto transmission which is "jerky": in 2017 you still get non-CVT type of transmission (that this is why gas mileage is so poor for such small 1.4 L engine. Very under-powered for heavy car like this). High maintenance costs (oil changes are $80 and up and if you do it yourself, VW voids the Warranty). Few mechanical issues were with the car but VW did not fix it right away (like my ex-Toyota dealer). Car is still on warranty but a dealer wanted me to pay "for diagnostics". I am not doing this because it's lease and I am driving it to the ground so to speak.

Shopped around and looked at many different models both import and domestics. This one by far is the best bang for the buck. Very quiet and handles like a dream! Very impressed!

We needed a low cost vehicle to replace my used 2007 Toyota Camry that had been totaled in an accident. I had established a budget of $16,000. I bought the Volkswagen based on its established reliability, and it has not disappointed me. I opted for the 5 speed manual to keep within budget. I received a small solid, reliable vehicle, that's actually classy looking. My only option on the base model were the 16 inch alloy wheels. The vehicle has been absolutely trouble free and cost effective.

Great car for long trips, very comfortable and quiet ride, put it into Sport mode and zip around town, this car has a lot of power you can tap into. Comfortable seats and well laid out and classy looking interior. A good all round car, I like it.

Comparing this car to my 2009 Volkswagen Jetta S 2.5. Not many changes in between then and the 2015. The A/C is just as good, the design is pretty much the same. One thing they did better in the 2015 model, is putting the auxiliary port in front of the car, instead of in the center console. Compared to my car, this one lacks so much power! I seem to have to press the pedal to the metal just to accelerate at a rate that makes me seem like I'm not an old grandmother driving. Even then, it lacks power. I don't think I'd get a new Jetta. Maybe look at the new Passat or Golf.

My parents gave this car to my daughter, I’ve always been a vw fan but always bought Honda in the past but I really like the jetta. The only problem has been the weak air conditioning. Of course the dealer can’t duplicate the problem. I’ll replace the compressor on the spring, hate my daughter and friends are uncomfortable when they ride in it, but the love the ac of my MB E350.

I leased this car for my mom who needed a new car quick - I gravitated towards the Jetta since VW offered its "sign and drive" event. What enticed me to this car was the bluetooth and backup camera. Not to mention, the stylish exterior lines and LED type lighting under the licence plate made this car a great modern option for around $250 a month and no money down. 1 year later, she doesn't need the car anymore, and I'm now in possession of it. This car drives awful. It has awful cheap suspension, cheap tires, and literally jerks during shifting as if I'm in a manual transmission car. I get car sick from driving. This is a great car for a teen driver, or someone that just needs a quick cheap car - but for someone that is used to luxury cars and trying to compromise by saving money - no way. Awful. I'm hoping to test drive a Passat and Toureg and trade it in on a new lease at the 1 year mark in December. Great gas milage, decent visibility. Decent looks - drives like a car in or below it's price range. I've also noticed paint chips and peeling - less than 1 year of ownership. Lease this car - don't purchase it! ****Update*****4/13/16: Edmunds emails me asking me to "update my review". Well, I still HATE this car. It's a cheap piece of metal. Drives terrible, the backup camera sometimes doesn't work, and I CAN'T WAIT till the lease ends. IT's a super cheap car, but I would never lease this again. I have a friend that pays over $300/mo (no down) on the Jetta GLI and loves it, however I'm not spending over $300 on a JETTA, even if it has leather, turbo engine, ect. No thanks. For that, I'd rather have a luxury car. I can't believe people actually LIKE this car. It drives horrible and feels so cheap. I don't drive it much (try not to) however every other week or so I take it on longer (2-3 hour) drive to San Diego from LA. It's not that great on gas. The only thing I like about it is the SIRUS radio.

Update: at 3300 miles on the car my wife was at a stop light. She stepped on gas to leave the stop light, the motor raced to 6,000 rpm's and engine roared but the speed stayed the same. This scared the hell out of her, she pulled into a parking lot and turned off the motor and waited a few minutes and drove home. I drove it for 30 minutes trying to replicate the problem. This has not happened since. Driver's seat: I needed to buy a cushion to make the driver's seat comfortable. It did not provide good back support prior to using the cushion.
