I have been very happy with the reliability of my car. Excellent paint & tires all the way to the handling, and performance. Will definitely buy VW again.

My dashboard was put in crooked at the factory, something I did not notice for several months. I had all the usual problems with the oxygen and mass airflow sensors, replaced 3 or 4 times (I forget which), cupholders, green ooze in the doors, poor key, 2 second delay when getting into gear on the automatic transmission. etc. Also an "endearing" noise in the front dash that occurs each year at through the cold weather season. Probably some metal parts contracting and vibrating in the cold. I contacted the president of VW in Germany, got a letter back from Germany saying that some one in the US would come out and look at my car. No one ever showed.

Love this car! it is fun to drive and has many little features that make your driving experience enjoyable and comfortable.

Bought it new, changed the oil regularly, had trouble with windows and AM antenna (both fixed by dealer under warrantee), yellow goop cleaned at each oil change by dealer for a few years, just changed the battery and tires. I could not expect more from a first year of a new style.

I bought my 1999 Jetta new with a 100,000 mile warranty. The starter went out at 38,000 miles (not covered). The window motor went out at 42,000 miles (not covered). The side molding came off at 50,000 miles (not covered). Now the stereo volume doesn't work properly and the big one, I need a new tranny and the clutch went out at 65,000 miles (probably covered but forgot to take it to the dealer). Oh yeah, my second starter went out at 55,000 miles and my second and third window motors are gone.
