Diesels are notorious for being hard to start, but
my Golf has been flawless in -20ºF temps. Sure, it
lets you know that it's a diesel when it starts in cold
weather, but it has never refused to start. The car is
fun to drive for the most part and I've seen up to 52
mpg. For those looking for an economy car with a
manual transmission, don't pass up a test drive of
the Golf!

Best Features

The favorite has to be the motor. As quiet or ever more so at highway speeds than other economy cars - extremely reliable. Heated seats are a must, as the diesel will take 5 or 10 minutes driving to warm up in cold weather. Letting it idle for 20 minutes does nothing.

Worst Features

Since the cold has set in, have noticed a few squeaks and rattles in the cabin. I sometimes bump radio buttons when I'm trying to change HVAC settings. Needs better headlights and VW should offer a stock coolant heater for those of us in cold climates.
