My perfect all-around car
I bought a black on black SE with the manual as soon as the MK7 was available. So far I've put 1300 miles on it in 2 weeks, including a trip to NJ and back. I can say that the car is not only very fun to drive, but it's also comfortable on a road trip. Over the hills and mountains of PA I averaged 33 mpg, which is pretty solid if you ask me. Handling is sharp, the seats hug you, and the build quality reminds me of more pricey German cars.
Love my hot hatch!
I have just put the first thousand miles on my 2015 GTI SE and could not be happier. The quality of the car, the performance, the PERFECT driving position all add up to a great car for a driving enthusiast like myself. If I have any gripe it is the car is very harsh over any imperfection in the road such as a pothole (not even a big one). This is undoubtedly down to stiff suspension and low profile tires.

The Ultimate Commuter
I had a 2012 GTI with the DSG. The new 2015 redesign is a huge improvement. Its brings better driving dynamics to the table in almost every category while including some great interior/tech features to polish things off. I wish i could have waited for the performance pack but the timing (my warranty was up) and price on this new model was just too good.
Unbelievable car! But beware...
I know the title of my review will give people pause, but fear not. I've had my GTI for a little over a week. When I first drove it home, the ride was bone-rattling hard and bouncy and the car sat really high in the front. Huge gaps between the front wheels and fenders. Turns out that the dealer forgot to remove the transport blocks from the front struts during the PDI. It takes about 5 minutes to remove them yourself and it's easy. Now I love the car. It rides and drives so nice. Reminds me of my Audi(sniffle). Great power without being too much. Can't say enough about this car. Would've paid 10K more and it STILL would've been a great value for the $$$.
6K miles and completely in love
Update: we made a huge mistake and sold our GTI a couple of years ago when we added a new family member. We’ve since had a Golfwagen, 3 series, Prius, and Jeep GC. The ONLY car we keep reminiscing about is the GTI. We’re actually thinking about getting another one - it was a huge mistake to sell. We now know it really had everything and frankly the most fun we’ve ever had in a 4 door. We went to the auto show in NYC and sat in everything from Mazda 3, CX-5, to a BMW X1 and everything in between (including A3). GTI really has everything you want, nothing you don't - its a bargain. So far at 6K miles, we still take turns driving because we like it so much. It's quiet @ 75MPH, but when you turn it up, that exhaust gives you a really nice purr. Its insanely practical, and we have had little issue fitting a 62" entertainment center in it and a very large ottoman (while the man next to us with a 328i, watched in awe as we drove away). It swallows cargo and people easily (I'm 6'2"). Would repurchase again. Tire pressure gauge is acting up, but its really cold. Not a big deal.

Tunnel Traffic Hatch Back Under $25K, Awesome!
This car is still fantastically fun. Its a roomy powerful hatchback. On the interstate you can pass everybody with ease. Anybody with a sports car challenges this car. Parking is a breeze. Gas mileage for a 220hp car is great 30 mpg at 65mph...any faster or sportier the driving, the lower it goes but the inverse is also true, 55 mph holds a wonderful 35mpg. Its quick, handles great and comfortable, supportive for long trips. I drive 30k+ miles a year from South Carolina to New York and live in Virginia. I don't even have the sports package and its the 2 door S model and its holding up great. Electronics have worked flawless except for fire wire connection to iPhone, seems to lock up ever 6 th dusk but Bluetooth is spot on and works up to 20 feet away. Controls are intuitive and easy to remember. Lighting is all LED. Everything can be reached from the driver seat. Rain, snow and summer heat do nothing to slow this car down. Oil cooler was replaced at 132k miles, $3K but I let dealer do it. The iPhone connection port only bad fault, seems to lock up about every 6 starts! I tested all the hatch back cars on the market and all Golf models and the GTI S model..stock, is all you need. My few comfort after market add-ons are the windows tinted 150$, added a 10"sub 250$, changed out the headlight control unit 80$ to control lights better, pull out the old headlight control and plug in the new. Dont waste money on dealer options...everything is less expensive on the after market products. This car is made to be a plug and play friendly car.... but Keep it simple, maintain your ride and you wont be disappointed. Nobody drives as much as me in a car like this, 140k miles so far and all seems to be very well, still have original brakes and just bought 4 set new tires at 139k miles still in Va...tunnel traffic all day. Casey VW does all my check ups!

Great commuter, great value
Had 15 GTI since September 2014. At the time of review I'm closing on 15K miles. Some issues I had so far: 1. After changing to winter tires recalibrated TPMS. In couple of weeks it started complaining on front right tire. Checked pressure - same as was. Other tires were good too. Outside temp didn't change. Recalibrated TPMS, issue didn't return. 2. At -2F engine noise "enhanced" by Soundaktor added a sound of ripped speaker to its tune which went away when temperature went up to +3F. 3. A month ago "Check gas tank cap" message went off at some point. Cap was attached properly and closed. Had to take the car to the dealership where they saw an unexplained error. All good since then.
Great car, super fun to drive
I drove a 2008 Mk5 GTI for about 2 years (closer to 3) before driving and later purchasing the Mk7. Performance is great - I don't feel the car slip, I don't feel any torque steer with the added torque and HP, and I definitely feel the car accelerate quickly when getting on highways etc. I guess my one gripe so far, and I'm not even sure if this is an issue, is that when it gets into second gear and the RPM is around 1000, the engine sounds like it's grinding. It's getting checked out next week and I haven't noticed it affecting performance, but this may be a side effect of the newer engines that the Mk7s have. Also, black paint is subject to spiderwebbing, but that's normal.
DSG Failure at 1692 miles!
We loved our new GTI for about 3 weeks but the the DSG transmission suffered a catustrophic failure at 1692 miles. The car lurched several times and then said reverse gear was not available. We pulled off to examine and found we had only first gear available. We were about80 miles from home at the time so VW roadside assistance had the car taken to the closest dealer (after a 3+ hour wait!). That was two weeks ago and the car is still there, waiting on parts and tools. We were told it is the first DSG replacement of its type and it may take several more weeks. VW of America has been NO help so far and we are monumentally disappointed. Update: This car was replaced by VW of America after an exhaustive process and the replacement car was so bad that we traded it off within the year. I will NEVER buy another Volkswagen and advise others to do the same!

Great Fun
This is my third GTI, my others being a 2003 and 2009, and my fifth Volkswagen. I very much enjoy the GTI's combination of power and efficiency. I purchased the GTI SE with lighting package. This is my first vehicle with automatic transmission. I am typically a die-hard manual person for vehicles like this, but the DSG with paddle-shifters is just as fun and automatic is much more convenient for the more common traffic jams encountered in today's commuter driving. Handling is amazing with the new power- steering system. The DSG engine comes off initially as soft, but throw it into sport mode with a quick down-shift of the transmission stick and the engine quickly switches to high-revs and allows for the aggressive acceleration GTI owners are used to. This is handy for needing to get on to a road with traffic without impeding oncoming traffic, which is a personal pet-peeve of mine. Drivers do not think enough about the other vehicles and only of themselves. The lighting package is a fantastic upgrade. The cornering lights are a great help, especially in neighborhoods you want to avoid running over pets and other animals with or without owners. Standard lighting is excellent and the hi-beams are what you would expect. It is rare, but don't be surprised to see oncoming traffic with sensitive eyes to occasionally flash you when you are using your low-beams, thinking you have hi-beams on. The included tires are good for dry and wet conditions, but are not reliable in ANY kind of snow. Unlike my 2009 GTI which was actually very good in snow, the new GTI comes with low-profile all-weather tires obviously not made for Winter travel. So expect slippage when it snows. I have recently replaced my OEM tires with BG-FORCE COMP-2 A/S. They are fantastic, and have improved what was already a tight turn-hugging vehicle. I am interested to see if there is ANY improvement in snowy conditions compared to the original tires. I am getting around 34 MPG combined with regular gas. I drive a mix of city/highway driving. I have seen all-highway get up to 42 MPG while cruising at 65-70 MPH. If you use premium, you can expect better gas mileage and a slight bump in performance. Cons: - VW installed a smaller gas-tank to decrease the weight, allowing them to increase engine power without compromising the MPG, losing a little over a gallon of space. This keeps the typical stops at the pump the same as my 2009 GTI, around 400 miles to the tank. - Blind spots o'plenty! Thick A-Pillars are good for safety ratings, but also not so great for the driver doing left hand turning. I find myself rocking forward and back when going around slight left hand curves and turns because my view is slightly obstructed by the a-pillar. It is not horrible, but it is something I am aware of each time I drive, especially in my development where I come upon soft left -hand curves around bends. Also the rear blind-spots, while not horrible, are another thing I am aware of, and I force myself to turn and contort to ensure no one is sneaking in my blind-spots on highways and roads even with my mirrors positioned properly. The new blind-spot technology available on the newer models would solve this problem instantly. - My driver's side window's one-touch system will occasionally give me issues and need to be reset, which is a simple matter of holding the button in the up position for an extra few seconds. - The rear wheels are constantly needing realignment. It is basically expected that I need to pay for alignment with every tire rotation.

Exceptional
Recently purchased a loaded GTI Autobahn and cannot say enough great things about it. It has just the right amount of power and handling but is still smooth similar to a luxury car. I am averaging around 29 mpg with mix city/hwy driving which is fantastic. The car size is deceiving. It looks relatively small but it is not. We have been able to fill the car up a with a ton of gear and 4 adults and had no issues. The price for everything it offers is a steal. I actually would have paid full sticker price and still been happy with it. I would gladly purchase another one.
Warranty is worthless, services insanely expensive
If I had to do it all over again I would not have purchased my 2015 GTI. The warranty covers nothing. I have had a speaker fail twice. The second one I paid for. The speaker repair was 500.00. I had to replace the cutch due to the salve cilynder failing and polluting the clutch with brake fluid, that was a 2400.00 repair event though the car was still under warranty. Volkswagen considers all clutch components a wear item no matter how low the mileage is on your car. Two wheel sensors failed. 90.00 each. Rear spoiler came lose. Valve cover gasket oil leak. I just completed the 40k service for close to 1000.00. The last repair was replacing a leaking break caliper. Mechanically the car is junk in my opinion. I wouldn't consider another Volkswagen.

Impressions of my 2015 Golf GTI
I've had the car for 3 years and it is incredibly athletic. Cornering is excellent as is the the straight line tracking. Acceleration is very strong with little turbo lag if you keep the rpm's a little above 2000. Jan 2018. STM Tuning of Spokane,WA did a Eurodyne DSG tune for me. It is perfect. The DSG now shifts automatically at the shift points I had been using in the manual mode. The "S" mode is still only for the track but that is OK. I could not be happier. I would recommend this for any GTI with the DSG transmission. Jan 2019--No problems so far.

Big fun, small price
This is my third VW golf, I love these cars. I think when you look up the word "car" in the dictionary, there should be a picture of a golf. I have a strategy for buying these cars cheap. The 2 door manual trans cars are less popular and they get dealer traded a lot, so I usually can find a previous model year car still sitting on the lot with like 300 dealer trade transport miles on it at a deep discount. (I understand now that 2016 was the last year of 2 door GTIs, boo, hiss!!) With this GTI I got the car for $6300 off sticker without haggling, so that's a brand new GTI for under $20k. This is my first Mexican built VW. My previous two golfs were built in Wolfsburg Germany, but I see no difference in build quality with the mk7 mexico golfs, they are well built. The PROS: Awesome acceleration, great steering, the best clutch and gear box combination I have ever experienced. The clutch is so user friendly and effortless, and the hill hold feature makes it even better in hilly traffic situations. The brakes are really nice, very responsive and lots of stopping power. Impressive fuel economy, I'm getting pretty much the published EPA numbers. These cars are solid and safe and they feel really stable at high speed. The seats!, I love VW seats because they are actually designed to support a human body correctly. It's cheaper to insure than my previous slow boring subaru crosstrek, how does that work? I like the redesigned storage compartment with the ipod cable inside in front of the gear shift; I leave an old 30gig ipod in there permanently. I like the parking assist display and audible cues. The entertainment system and audio system interface are a good example of VWs continuous improvement of their designs. The system is more intuitive and functional vs my mk6 golf but without feeling drastically different. Finally, nothing beats the practicality of this car, you can get so much stuff into it, its easy to park, and cheap to own. The CONS: Torque steer isn't bad in this car, but if you punch it hard it will sneak up on you sometimes. My diesel golf had about the same torque but much slower acceleration and less horsepower so torque steer was much reduced in that car compared to the GTI. Premium fuel is a bummer but really what is an extra $1.50 per tank? I miss the cruise control buttons on the turn signal stalk on my mk5 and mk6 golfs. That was really a more functional setup than having the buttons on the steering wheel, which are harder to reach quickly. CD player in the glove box is a little weird, but it's not that big a deal. VW seems to be unable to design a door and side window that doesn't either rattle or have an irritating air leak. In the case of the 2015 GTI 2door the window rubber is a little hard and it rattles when driving around town on rough roads. If I roll the window down 1/4 inch it stops rattling. I've learned not to complain to the dealer about stuff like this because they usually fix the wrong thing and they make it worse. For me the biggest drawback to owning a VW is dealing with VW when something goes wrong with the car, and believe me, something will go wrong during the warranty period. VW likes to issue warranty extensions for known defects rather than issuing recalls. That means they wait for the component to fail with the "guarantee" that they will replace it when it fails. That's no big deal, but sometimes "they" can be quite petty and tight lipped about, if, how, and when they will resolve the issue (and by "they" I mean VW corporate dictating to the dealers what is going to happen). For instance when the high pressure fuel pump in my TDI failed on a dark isolated road in the middle of the night at 37k miles and was covered by a warranty extension because of a known defect, they made me wait 9 days with no feedback, no loaner car, and a 50/50 chance of being financially responsible for a $5k repair while they sent a fuel sample for lab analysis to screen my fuel for banned substances (gasoline, fuel treatments, biodiesel, etc.) German companies view customers as an unfortunate byproduct of being in business..... but all of this doesn't stop me from buying Volkswagens because I just can't find a car that I like better, you just need to have a zen attitude about it. (Update - as of 2019 I still love the car. My only gripe is that during cold weather the cable operated gear shift can get a bit notchy during quick shifts) (Update - as of 2020 nothing has changed, I still love the car. At 15k miles the transmission developed an oil leak out of the input shaft seal. It was a bit of an ordeal to get my dealership which is 60 miles from home to find the problem even though their lube technician was the one who found the leak initially. I had to hang out at the dealer and coach them on how to get it to leak. Once they found it they had to keep the car for over a week to take the trans out, but all is fixed and still ok 4K miles later.)

Great performance but some major shortcomings
The fourth year with my GTI (with performance package) was unnecessarily expensive. I don’t drive the car hard but had to replace both front wheel bearings at just over 60,000 miles to the tune of $1,100 at the dealership. Engine light appeared and the culprit was a sensor that cost about $300 to replace. Replaced front brakes and rotors at almost 70,000 but that was to be expected - in fact, that was quite good in terms of longevity. Had to replace two summer Michelin’s, but the dealership slapped on two all-season tires! Obviously, that was unacceptable and the dealership replaced them, but didn’t have them in stock, so it meant yet another hour-long round trip to the dealership - while I was on vacation. From the start, I was unhappy with the entertainment and navigation and it never got any better. The entire system would just quit on occasion and restart, for no reason. Only one USB port and needed a special adapter to connect my iPhone to entertainment system. I got the navigation but wouldn't buy it again. My iPhone nav is much better. On the plus side, the GTI never disappointed in terms of performance and handling. I loved the seats, as well as the design and quality of the interior. All in all a great little performance hatch, with some annoying flaws.

If your going to buy a VW you better buy two.
40K miles: Engine failure - VW assists with payment for blasting the intake valves. 50K miles the headliner falls down. 60K Miles ABS goes out, $2000. 85K complete motor failure.

Impulse Purchase Gone Wrong
Bought 2015 GTI in June 2015 and traded my 2012 VW GLI (2.0 L turbo/6M) which was a mistake. Pros: With the exception of the rear deck (inside the rear window behind the back seat) the interior is well constructed and the seating is very comfortable for all passengers. The Fender stereo's Bluetooth is very good. Acceleration is good but suffers turbo lag. Cons: Where the GLI was comfortable, fast and averaged 33-35 combined mpg, this car has both rough acceleration and a rough ride. The best highway mileage to date has been about 31 mpg. Biggest problem is a recent (in the past month or so) interior smell/exhaust leak in the car which two dealerships have been able to detect but can not find the source. On two occasions, both I and my passengers have gotten light-headed and almost felt like passing out. The smell is much worse when the car is idling. One dealership said it was "plastic burning off" and the other said the materials used in the interior are giving off fumes. Either way, great... Verdict: Should have kept my old car.

the smile maker
The drivers seat become uncomfortable after 2 hour of driving, not cool. Hey Volkswagen can i get a little padding please. Ive had my GTI for 9 months with 15k miles on it. But if your looking for a car with great handling and gas mileage that will put a smile on your face this is the one. Here's my update in 2017 the GTI will develop an irregular idle between 15 & 25k miles, the solution was Volkswagen replacing the fuel pump under warranty all is well. The car is still a joy to drive at 47k miles , no repairs and no complaints .

Versatile Car with WOW factor- fun to drive
My VW 2015 4 Dr GTI S model 6MT is my second VW I have owned. Bought a new VW Scirocco in 81 and had for 17 years. After 3 children and other cars in between I am glad to be back in a VW. It is really true you have two cars in one with the GTI. I am gentle on my cars and take good care of them but like to get on the throttle from time to time....this is such a fun car. With the versatile back seats one has a ton of storage room. It can hold everything I need...even from the LARGE Costco trips. The acceleration is phenomenal when you punch it which gives it a big WOW factor. I recommend that everyone at least take a test drive...I am so pleased with the versatility of this car ...a sports car, daily driver, great fuel economy (I have averaged over 32+ over 22k miles), very good sound system (even in this base model), tons of cargo space, and in my opinion a great looking car. I look forward to driving every time I get behind the wheel...which is not the case with many other cars I have owned. Until you test drive you will never know what you may be missing.

Astonishing value
I just sold mine after three and a half years and 37000 miles, but only because I needed something bigger. Really, this is a remarkable car for the money. It gives a satisfying and solid feel to drive, like a more expensive German car would, but is inexpensive to buy and operate. I had absolutely no trouble with mine. The engine is very smooth, the controls are fluid, the handling/ride compromise is pretty ideal for the kind of suburban driving that I do. Two relatively small complaints. First, the seat adjustability could be better (note that my car was the S model, and didn't have power seats). Second, the wheels are more prone to cosmetic damage from curbs than is necessary. The face of the wheel is approximately flush with the sidewall of the tire.

Does EVERYTHING Well
Perhaps the best all around car made, especially for the price. It's decently quick. I t handles like an extension of me. It has loads of space in a small envelope. It gets good mileage. Perhaps it can be criticized for needing premium gas for the best performance but you can use regular and really not notice the difference unless you're really pushing it(and then you'' definitely be asking for a ticket).

Great car for someone looking for a fun ride. Clean interior and dashboard leather is very sun resistant. Well designed performance and handles very well in dry condition. With front wheel drive, handling in wet or snowy conditions becomes a little more risky. Stock engine noise is great and turbo whistles out with ease. The double clutch enables super fast gear changes in automatic while the downfall to manual DSG is very sticky at low speeds when using the paddle shifters. Safety of the car is felt when sitting inside due to high side walls and deep b bucket seats which protect you by the door panel itself and not the window glass itself. Overall. German engineering did a terrific job with creating a low cost, performance vehicle that is a joy to drive.

The worst car I have ever owned
I've had this car for 5K miles. At 4K miles the oil light comes on. I find out the Audi 2.0L turbo is a known oil burner. The sunroof creaks loudly been in for a repair once now the sound is back. The MPG are at the low end of the city/highway rating (around 24mpg) even though I drive a mix city/highway with no traffic. It's not very fast and rides very roughly. No point in putting a powerful engine in FWD car because it can't get any power to the pavement. I really hate this car but because of the VW scandal the resale value has dropped like a rock. Please do yourself a favor and pass on this horrible car.

Miss my Autobahn
Had my GTI 4dr Autobahn for just over 2 years and 2 months and put almost 32,000 miles on it. "Repaired" a few times for a suspension creaking noise that couldn't be diagnosed/fixed. However, the car was awesome. Great stereo, great gas mileage (Austin commute 45 miles daily; mostly hwy avg 28 mpg), great pick up, comfortable seats. The DSG can be jerky when driving in slow stop and go traffic, but you learn to minimize it after some time. Similarly, you learn how to manipulate the slow acceleration response in stop and go traffic. Typically, these are non-issues. The Pirelli tires did become very noisy around 25,000 miles even though I had around 1/2 the tread left. I traded it in for a different vehicle because the vehicle can be pricey to maintain. My 20K miles service was around $200, and the 30k service was over $200. The next service at 40K miles is outrageous due to the DSG flush. Hindsight, I should have bought a new GTI and got rid of it before 40K miles. Live and learn.

Great commuter
I love this car, it is my daily driver and the interior is extremely comfortable. For the price point, I really have no complains. It is a hatchback, FWD, so don't expect it to be as fast as a Ferrari. realistically, it is a very good car.

Best driving car I ever owned; not the best car...
Super fun to drive, held two adults and two kids easily but close quarters for long trips. Great acceleration, awesome handling, stiff ride but it's a sports car, tight steering, nice interior, 8/10 for audio, but 6/10 for storage and roominess. Mine was in the shop three times in the second year (under warranty!) for mysterious fuel system problems. They replaced the fuel pump three times and i guess got it right the third time - no more problems! No other repairs during the three years I had it. The only built-in problem was it's a torque-y little car with low profile, summer tires. Great when it's sunny and dry but not when roads are slick and don't bother in the snow. I got separate rims with snow tires and they helped a little. Bottom line - great car if you enjoy a spirited ride AND don't need to transport a family AND don't need to drive in snow. If I could have a second car for sunny weekend, wife-and-me-only getaways, this would be it.

GTI - excellent daily driver
Very happy with the GTI. Excellent blend of performance, comfort and economy. Makes commuting enjoyable. Next purchase would be an R if available in 2 door. Consider the performance package. The larger brakes and front differential are worth the price difference. The rear seats are useable, but don’t warrant 4 doors for a single driver / commuter.

Loved the car. Modded mildly with an engine tune and suspension upgrades-- made this a fun car for everyday. Hatch back made for ample room with rear seats folded forward. I'm 86 years old and this GTI with stuck shift is.
The good: My low mileage red GTI gets frequent compliments by people six decades younger than me. The cargo capacity works well in combination for hauling outsider objects. Just the right horse power unless you are drag racing. The 2015 styling and trim has outlasted all subsequent years. I would like a “G” but the styling is too conventional. I can imagine driving this car without a stick shift. The bad: Ac went out after 22,000 miles (2023). My Santa Monica, CA dealer ship is bear bones for service and lackluster at preparing a new vehicle. Still, I'll probably die with Th this car in my garage. If I bought another cat it sold be a GTI or an “R.”
Porsche without the price tag
Extremely fun to drive, power when you need it, great handling when you desperately need it, and a solid safe feel.

Engine quits when oil is low
My daughter has a 2015 GTI that seems to have a slow oil leak--enough that she can't make it to the next oil change without adding oil at least once. When the oil is low, she can be driving along and, after making a turn, the engine quits. So far she's been lucky and could pull over out of traffic but is worried she won't always be so fortunate. Dealership can't find a cause--no oil on driveway or cloudy exhaust. Has anyone else had this problem--and a solution (other than checking the oil weekly)? Otherwise, she loves the car.
