2018 Hyundai Elantra GT
My wife wanted to replace her Kia Soul with something sportier but still practical. We considered the Civic Hatchback and Mazda 3, but we found a 2018 Elantra GT base (2.0 w/ 6A) with the heated seats/tech package for the end-of-year bargain price of $17.5k after rebates. This was $5-6k less than any similarly equipped Civic or Mazda 3. I also drove an Elantra GT Sport (1.6T w/ 7DCT); it … was quicker, but not remarkably so. Shortly after purchasing we road tripped from Oregon to Nevada for Thanksgiving, with many twisty mountain backroads through the Cascades and Sierras. Handling was excellent, and power was just fine for mountain driving and passing. Most professional reviewers prefer the 1.6T in the N-line, but the 2.0L's 160HP is satisfying for an economy car. The cabin feels expensive, and the heated seats+dual zone climate control are well worth the extra cost on a snowy winter day. Ergos are outstanding for taller drivers (I'm 6'3"), although back seat space is cramped. We're seeing highway fuel economy a little above EPA ratings: 34-36mpg. Styling inside and out is handsome. I can't believe we got such a nice car for this price.
Maintenance: I still do my own. Maintenance access is pretty good like on most modern Hyundais and Kias, and the first two oil changes were easy. The under-engine cover has a nice cutout for oil filter access. We've had zero reliability issues, a year and four months later the car still looks and runs like new.
