Used 2006 Toyota Tundra Double Cab Consumer Reviews
2nd Toyota - Expectations Met So Far!
We purchased this vehicle in Amarillo, TX with 149,675 miles on it for $11,900. I still have my 2000 Toyota Tacoma with 173,000+ miles, however, we needed a larger truck that could haul firewood and have a better towing capability. We decided that we did not want a new truck for several reasons: 1. Cost - new vehicles today are crazy expensive. 2. Expensive maintenance. 3. Too many electrical components and gadgets making it more likely that something is going to need to be repaired or replaced at most likely a high cost. 4. New vehicles are basically impossible to work on yourself. That being said, we choose the 2006 Tundra since it was the last year of the 1st generation Tundras and probably had most of the kinks worked out from previous years. Another bonus is that this was the last year that Tundras had non-transponder ignition keys (e.g. regular keys). Tundras built from 2007 on have the transponder chip keys which are expensive to reprogram if you lose your master key (around $500). Again, like I said...newer vehicles are more expensive to maintain and repair. The first thing we did was an oil/filter change, power steering fluid exchange, coolant drain/refill and fuel injection cleaning. Tires still look good. The 2006 Tundra did come with some problems such as having to replace the master cylinder and load sensor valve. Brakes were cleaned and adjusted. The windshield wiper blades do not reset properly. It is either a motor and/or linkage arm issue...we are still researching this since the wipers still work. Our first long trip was from New Mexico to California and back. We put about 2,000 miles on the truck and had no problems at all. The ride was very smooth and comfortable. We keep track of the fuel history and so far, we are getting a combined city/highway 16.4 mpg. Not great but could be worse. This included bringing back a heavy load on I-40. One thing we noticed is that this truck has a terrible turning radius. That being said, we are happy with this truck so far and we will update this review as we put more miles on it.

Not one single repair issue in 10 yrs
I purchased this truck when dealers were phasing out the 1st generation to make room for incoming 2007s. This is the best vehicle I have owned by far. All I have done is scheduled maintenance put fuel in it and go. No repairs. No issues. Rides smooth. Have pulled 6000# travel trailer for 22000+ miles and 16' utility trailer with tractor or whatever is loaded on it another 5 or 6000 mi. Pulls like a champ, has tow package with 3.92 rear differential. Installed air bags on rear, truck hauls everything I put in it dependably. Still in great condition. This could be the last truck I own.

It's a Toyota, what do ya expect?
I'm approaching 190k miles on my '06 Tundra. I drove it off of the lot with 9 miles on the odometer. The truck is great and have had no major issues with this truck. I have replaced the front brakes twice, the rear once. I have replaced the serpentine belt and spark plugs only one time. It seems the older the truck gets, the better the mileage is. Currently, I'm getting 17 mpg running regular unleaded fuel. I've had no leaks on any of the seals on the engine, transfer case, or differential. The truck rides as if it was new, with little road noise, vibration, or any unusual sounds that would raise concerns. If you are in the market and can find this truck with low mileage, I highly recommend this truck. My only complaint is that it only has the 4.7L 271hp engine, which is weak, but it will pull your trailer if you find the right gear.

I'm happy I looked and waited...
Great Truck! Down sides: Needs better lumbar support, Big turning radius (I'm used to my old pathfinder), windshield scratches easily. I love this truck more every time I drive it. Plenty of power, I don't even know my 19' bass boat is back there. Highway passing is effortless. Gets the same mileage whether I'm towing or not (18 mpg). Plenty of room for me and my family (I'm 6'1 and my kids are huge). Hands down the best I looked at and drove, period.
Solid Value for the Money
Bought this truck new, drove 15,000 miles and waited almost a year to do this review. Have also read other reviews. Yes, the transmission shift points and brakes took time to get used to, but now that I am used to them, I better appreciate the way they are designed and operate - and I like them. Tows my 6,000 lb boat and trailer adequately. Highway ride is great - I prefer over my wife's Lexus GX 470. Gas mileage has met my expectations at 17-18 mpg around town and on the road (reason I do not trade up for a 07 big engine). What I especially like is the value for the price: leather, stability control, side curtain air bags and all the practical accessories I needed.
