Used 2016 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab Consumer Reviews
An Honest Review From A New Tacoma Owner
Let me start off this review by saying that I have never owned a Tacoma before or a truck. Also I have had my Tacoma for about 10 weeks now. I felt it was necessary to write a review to defend this truck. This is a great truck and I would recommend it, but lease it till they work out the bugs. First off, I'll start off with one of probably the most important questions, the mpg. I average around 20 mpg, doing about 60% city, 40% highway. If you do a lot of highway driving, my mpg meter has gone as high as 26mpg, as long as you don't drive like a jerk, you should get decent mileage. But when you buy a truck you're not buying it for the mpg, you buy it for versatility, otherwise go buy a Prius. Moving onto performance and ride quality. In terms of performance, I will admit acceleration can be a bit sluggish, especially when you need it. However, I find that if you turn the ect pwr button on or put it in sport mode, that does seem to loosen up the transmission a bit for better acceleration. It's no race car, but it still has ample passing power. In terms of ride quality, it's relatively smooth, but when going over bumps it gets pretty rough, so ride quality is so-so. And to add to that steering is pretty responsive. In terms of the interior, I love it, it's very simplistic but very nice and clean layout. I have cloth seats and they're very comfy, and the infotainment center's touchscreen is very responsive and user friendly. In terms of sound system, I had heard Toyota speakers were garbage, but to be honest they're actually pretty decent. Certain genres of music can be on the quieter side and require you to really crank it up. But overall, for the non-jbl's they still have pretty decent bass. Last but not least, I'd just like to add that, the backup camera makes parking the Tacoma even easier, as it's nimble size makes it easier to get through tight spaces. The design is definitely a big improvement in my opinion. Overall I give it 4 stars, it's a great truck, but still has its short comings, hopefully when my lease is up they'll make more improvements on the little things. Hope this review helped any future buyers!

Underpowered motor, terrible transmission, issues
Have had many issues with leaf springs squeaking toyota says they can't fix it. Three times been to dealer for this. Rear differential was making a howling noise on freeway between 55 and 65 mph when feathering the accelerator pedal and ended up being replaced under warranty but now the replacement rear diff is making the same noise. Spent many hours at dealer and toyota tech flew out to look now they claim it's normal. Driveline vibrations noticed at 1800 to 2200rpms. Toyota claims this is normal too but never had this on any other vehicle I've owned. Toyota quality control going down the crapper. The fuel economy is no better than my old 2009 Tacoma yet they put a smaller motor and it performs terribly...it lacks low-end torque. Dealer applied software update to "fix" transmission shifting constantly but after about 1000 miles the tranny shifts like poorly again. I thought it would get better with mileage but it has only gotten worse. Would not buy again

Vibration Nation
The engine is weak compared to the 2nd Generation Tacoma. The transmission shifts erratically, even after the electronic transmission "learns" your driving behaviors. I'm averaging 17 MPG gas mileage, despite the 18-20 MPG advertisement. Worst, the 2016 is plagued by several vibration problems. First, a driveline vibration/shudder on acceleration. This was a vexing problem with the the Tacoma since 2005. And Toyota's Chief Engineer Mike Sweers claims they completely eliminated this problem in the 2016. Nope. It's still there. Now add to the 2016 a strong buzzing vibration that transmits through the steering wheel and gas pedal on acceleration. This wasn't there on previous Tacomas I've owned before 2016. The buzzing traverses through your skin and clothes (not hyperbole). It's annoying on street driving; but it's downright ridiculous and dangerous on highway driving, when you're exposed to it for long periods. Toyota's response to all of this has officially been "these are normal and characteristic; we're sorry you don't like it." So, they intentionally designed vibrations into the truck. Don't be fooled by the "it's a truck" excuse. I've owned many trucks, including Tacomas, and a normal truck doesn't do this. Period. Overall, very disappointing.

2016 Tacoma - poor quality
Beware of buying this first generation Tacoma. I have a serious buzzing sound coming from the dash that the dealer can't fix after 2 attempts and not having my truck for several days. Also, the transmission shifting is horrible. It's like driving a 4 cylinder, no power to pass, etc. Had high expectations for this truck and am very disappointed. Dealership (Nalley in Roswell, Ga) has been concerned at all. No offer of a loaner, nothing other than "yeah, we'll fix it, no idea what it is...".

I Walked Away from This Thing - Fast
I’ve owned several Tacoma trucks, including my current 2010, which I love. I discovered the new 2016 during a dealer for service department. I wasn’t too interested in upgrading before, but I took a very quick test drive and thought I was sold. I liked the interior and exterior re-design. So I ordered a Limited and waited several months for it. But I began doing my homework and reading reviews, which raised a few flags. Regardless, the truck came in at the end of January and I was excited. I asked the dealer to let me take it on an extended test drive before I took delivery. I had it for over an hour on city and highway speeds. That test drive changed everything and confirmed many of the reviews. The engine was very under-powered. It worked too hard on the highway, the transmission shifting was awful, and the engine was very coarse and loud. The brakes pulsated, like the ABS was engaging, with normal light braking. And there was this strong, high-frequency buzz that transmitted through the steering wheel, pedals, and seats at highway speeds and certain acceleration points on side roads. I could even hear the buzzing vibration rattle the interior components. That was the killer for me. I thought perhaps these were isolated problems on that truck. So the dealership let me take another Limited out for a spin. Same problems on that one! The dealership’s explanation? “Sounds like they all do it, so it must be a normal. Plus, we’re selling them like hotcakes so it must not bother everyone.” Very well, but they bother me. I walked away from the deal and got my deposit back. I was very disappointed but glad I didn’t spend the $38K on that. My 2010’s engine is more refined and owns the highway with its power. No issues with shifting, excessive engine noise, or uncomfortable vibrations. I will hang on to my 2010 for another year or so and hope Toyota gets it right in a few years.
