The new 8sp Transmission, it has problems!

2017 Sienna, XLE 5,255 miles. I noticed a light whining sound during drive/acceleration about a day or two before the first breakdown. The whining sound comes on and you can hear it faintly with the foot on the gas. You don't need to engage the acceleration, just keep your foot on the pedal lightly and you'll hear the whine, once you let go, the whining goes away. We didn’t have any problem with trips closer to home, the farthest we’ve driven locally was about 40 miles. We took our first of town trip with a travel time of two hours. After we got off the freeway with our exit, at the first stop light, when downshifting from 2nd to first, we heard a “clunk” and a jerked is felt. Then another light, the continued “clunk” and jerked progresses, the intensity has increased. It started to happen more frequent, at every stop light, the downshifting jerks, “clunk”, and pulls, sometimes it felt as if we were rear ended by the car from behind. Then on the acceleration from stop to go, the van started to upshifts too soon, therefore, it didn’t have any momentum. It was also slipping/not engaging in 3rd gear. Over the course of the next 30 minutes, all the skipping, jerking, pulling, clunking, every gear change. They were loud, and felt like we were hit by another car from the rear. We were pretty much rolling on first and second gear, no 3rd gear, vibration on 4th… There were no check engine lights, no warning lights of any kind. Finally, the check engine light came on, then shortly, the anti-slipping light came on, then the failed safely brake came on, then it just wouldn’t go forward or backward anymore. It stopped right at the intersection! It was dangerous, since it's an expressway intersection and cars were coming thru fast. I managed to have it barely roll off and out of the intersection and used Toyota Roadside Assistance and waited an hour and a half for the tow truck to arrive. The van was towed to a nearby Toyota dealer for an overnight drop off. It took the dealer several days figure out and to get repair approvals and instructions from Toyota Corp. They performed two software updates on the Transmission ECU and the throttle body. I picked up the van on the following week and it seems to be doing fine on the short drives in town. However, the problem started again after the 2 hours long drive back home. Again, the same stuff... a ‘clunk’ and jerk from the downshift from 2nd to first gear is heard and felt. This ‘clunk’ and harsh jerk was happening here and there, not as often as it did on the our first breakdown. I didn’t want to take any chances of breaking down on the road again, so I drove the vehicle straight to Maita Toyota dealer in Sacramento, took on another loaner and leave the van with the dealer again. Dealer didn't find anything wrong with the car because they let the transmission get cool overnight, therefore, when they diagnose the next day, it was fine, and it only happens on long drives, at minimum 1.5hrs drive. I kept on driving the van for another 2-3 weeks, then the whining noise came. It starts at about 30mph and last all the way, and gets louder as you drive faster, and up to about 70mph. It doesn't go away...and will continue to be louder and louder as time goes by. I took it into the dealer again and requested for a master mechanic to go on a drive with me so that I can point out the whining noise. Finally, it was a problem in the transmission, and Toyota Corp approved a transmission replacement. It's been several months now, with the replaced transmission. Car drives normal without the noises, but the shifting doesn't feel right. It tends to up-shifts too soon, therefore, lack of power, and when you need some lite acceleration, it won't go, but if you give it more gas, it'll down-shift all over the place and jerks like you're trying to race. It still doesn't perform, it feels like you're driving a car that's built in the 90's. To summarize all this up: - 2017 Sienna 5,255 miles - The bad shifting/clunking/skipping gear/missing gear seems to happen after a long drive 1.5-2hrs, after the transmission gets hot. - First sign of problem is whining noise - Second sign of problem is downshift into first gear, when coming to a stop. - 3rd and continued sign of problem is more downshifts and upshift felt and noise - After a few more lights of the continued sign, get ready to pull to the side and call for tow. - Transmission replaced at 6400 miles - It tends to up-shifts too soon, therefore, lack of power, and when you need some lite acceleration, it won't go, but if you give it more gas, it'll down-shift all over the place and jerks like you're trying to race. It still doesn't perform, it feels like you're driving a car that's built in the 90's. STILL NOT HAPPY! I STILL BELIEVE IT WILL BREAK DOWN AGAIN, hopefully, sooner before the warranty expires.

Very Poor Preformace

1. No acceleration for a second or so then it kicked in. 2. Lift off the throttle approaching a corner, and pressing on the throttle half way through the corner. Feels like the gear slipped (engine whines, but no acceleration) then exerted a big gear kick. 3. Lot of money for a car that drives like a straight drive. 4. I owned a 2014 Sienna and sold it to get this 2017. Except for the money lost i would trade the 2017 for the 2014. 5. i would not recommend this van until Toyota admits the problem and corrects it. 6. By the way my local dealer agrees its a problem but say its nothing they can do about it.

Transmission failure after 10K miles

After 10k miles the car start making a whining noise when accelerating over 30 mph. Searching online reveals that it's a common problem that leads to complete transmission failure, however the dealer refuses to fix the noise until the transmission fails completely. It's not a pleasant experience driving a car with kids inside waiting for transmission to fail. Now I need to talk to lawyers and file for the Lemon Law. The acceleration overall is very bad, the car feels like an under powered big box on wheels. The interior quality is very low, the car squeaks from everywhere. Fuel economy is awful, I get around 10 mpg in the city and the car drives really bad. If you think you buy it because it's a Toyota think again because they are no longer what they used to be.

2017 Sienna TRANSMISSION BEWARE

I bought a brand new 2017 Sienna XLE and the transmission went out at 14,000 miles. The dealership replaced the transmission but we have had more electrical issues with the vehicle. Now it only starts when it wants too. The dealership can’t “duplicate” the issue on demand so to them it’s a “glitch”! Toyota has been absolutely useless. I am terrified this unreliable vehhvle is going to get my family killed! BUYER BEWARE!

Love AWD but make car slower

We replace 2013 FWD XLE with 2017 XLE Premium AWD. Ride is much much improved . Quality of interior compare to other minivans on the market is outstanding. Only issue/downsize is performance. Not sure if this is because of AWD or new direct injection motor/new transmission but old car was much more punchy. This new one is simply lazy.. you have to step on really hard to get any performance from it

Just an OK van

Armando, 04/22/2019

This van has been just okay. The new 8 speed transmission is horrible.. It acts as if something is wrong with it. I had the software updated, it helped but it's still not great. It often acts confused and jerks. Also with the 2nd row middle seat out, it has an awkward cup holder bump thingy on the floor that everyone trips over... It is a very strange design. The paint on the front bumper is chipping also. Otherwise, it's typical Toyota quality, solid, quiet on the highway with no issues. For the money spent, it's a good value if you can overlook the annoying issues mentioned above.

2017 VERSATILITY, COMFORT, AND STYLE

After 50 years of marriage my wife and I have leased, purchased, or used as a company provided car over 60 vehicles. This includes a top of the line 40' diesel pusher motorhome. At our age we decided to downsize homes, vehicles, and other toys for mini-size STYLE, COMFORT, AND ROOM. The 2017 Sienna met all those needs and more. First, the ride is smooth without feeling every bump in the road. (If you want a stiff ride you can get the sporty version.) Next, is the seating. The second row seats are the same size and quality as the front seats. They don't fold down level and out of the way, but they can be removed if necessary for a full cargo capacity. The third row of seats can fold down and out of the way or provide a nice well for holding groceries. It has all the modern electronics popular today, including an "Easy Speak" feature--a mic with speaker for rear-seat passenger hearing from the front. Although the roof rack cross bars are easily adjustable, they do not have any locking feature that would prevent theft, but there are two rings to which cable locks could be attached to prevent theft. I made two steel bars to bolt to the rings between the cross bars. Our roof top cargo carrier rides great holding four sets of golf clubs. I've read some of the negative reviews (acceleration et. al.) but I have found none of them to be true for us. As I said, we've had the best and the most expensive, but this minivan really meets our needs. But there is a design flaw because you can't open the left side passenger door AND have the gas fill door open at the same time. The door hits the gas fill door and a passenger cannot exit the vehicle.

Run flats are flat

The run flat tires on Sienna 's have a history of problems back to 2006. I had spoken with the San Francisco Toyota dealer who assured me this was resolved. Yes, indeed, by 19,000 I was purchasing a new set so they resolved it, in favor of Toyota and Bridgestone. We took into the snow with 4,000 miles on it and about 5 inches of snow, the AWD performed poorly, as compared to the 2008 Sienna AWD we used to own, both with Bridgestone run flat tires. Further, the brakes warped by 12,000. Toyota did replace those brakes after a lot of complaining. We have had Toyota sienna's before. But paying so much for this limited AWD sienna vehicle and disappointments with safety features of tires and Brakes, have made me question Toyota's claim of listening to the consumer. This will be our last Sienna.

Greatly Improved over 2014 Sienna

2017 Toyota Sienna SE Premium 8-Passenger 4dr Minivan (3.5L 6cyl 8A)

I totaled my Sienna 2014 XLE after 3.5 years of driving it. I hit two deer in a 75 mph zone. Air bags deployed, and I wasn't injured except for ear problems due to the side airbag hitting me in the ear. I now have a 2017 Sienna SE Premium. Technology is much advanced since 2014. The BlueTooth interface is greatly improved (much easier to use with a shorter introduction: "How may I help you" as compared to the long explanation before), though during phone calls people can still tell I am in the car (however, one friend told me it sounded better than the 2014) . By comparison, with my 2010 Kia Sorento BlueTooth, people usually couldn't tell I was driving. The Kia had the microphone on the driver's side windshield pillar; Toyota has kept the microphone in the center above the rear view mirror. iPod interface is greatly improved since 2014. The navigation screen is bigger and better. There is now an information screen in between the speedometer and tachometer. You can customize the screen (mpg, digital speedometer, miles to empty, etc., outside temp is always displayed on the screen) as well as view turn directions, speed limit, and iPod content from the screen. The seats are much more comfortable than those in the 2014. Down hill assist works great: I do a lot of mountain and hill driving. The 2014 had down hill assist, but it didn't work well. Cabin lights are improved: window, door and cup holder lights are brighter and easier to see; they are now blue instead of green. The ride seems quieter than the 2014, even though the SE comes with 19" rims. The handling is better--tighter, more responsive steering. The engine is now 8 speeds for better gas mileage, but I notice that the pick-up isn't as good: it seems to take longer when I step on the gas getting onto the freeway. The 2017 comes with LED daytime running lights, and the tail lights are LED, so that it looks like they are all white until the diodes light up. The SE does not have automatic third row windows--I miss that: they can only be opened manually. The XLE comes with automatic third row windows. The SE Premium comes with 6 speakers instead of four, which is one reasons I went with Premium; however, it also has a rear entertainment system, which I think is a waste. I didn't want it. I would have preferred automatic third row windows or parking assist or adaptive (radar) cruise control, or a subwoofer, or another moon roof, or cooled seats to a drop-down screen that sometimes rattles and will probably never be used. All that wiring for nothing (Blu-ray player to screen, input jacks in the rear (s video?!), headphone jacks, wired into the sound system)! The built-in Blu-ray player takes the place of a storage shelf that I used to use. I almost backed out of the sale because I didn't want the entertainment system. Why oh why, Toyota, did you have to put the entertainment system in? People have iPads and gaming devices with better screens, but I can't buy a stand alone cooled seat, or automatic third row windows, or any of the other useful items I mentioned previously which would have taken much less wiring. What were you thinking? I went for the SE instead of the XLE because I wanted a black interior. I wear a lot of dark clothing and had problems with dye transfer in my 2014 Sienna with its light grey seats. There are still two glove compartments, but the top one no longer has shelves and seems smaller than the one in the 2014. There is a feature that uses the front microphone to project the driver's voice through the speakers so people in the back can hear the driver better. Interesting. We used it just for the fun of testing it out. It works, but is it useful? The dealer threw in rear parking sensors for free as I was waivering.

Run Flat

Dawne, 11/24/2018

This Sienna minivan would be much improved if the Run Flat tires would last long enough for us to get a flat. The cost of being replaced after 35,000 miles with new run flats is to the tune of just over $1,000. There is no spare, there is no jack for the spare available for this vehicle. We are now in the process of purchasing five new tires plus a rim so that we will not have the need to purchase new tires every year and a half. All the Seinna minivans come with these new Run Flat tires which are not worth their price tag. The size of the tires are 17” which is not ordinary for tire companies to carry. But of course they can be ordered. Our run flats will be replaced with a top of the line Toyo tire which will last roughly about 65,000 miles for just a bit more than the run flats. And also come with free flat fixing and replacement Under certain conditions. It does pose one problem, where will I store the spare. But being taken advantage of by managements decision to use these tires on the minivans is not something I can abide by. This is the second Toyota for us and the last. Customer lost due to poor judgment by Toyota management.

We have owned two previous Sienna's, 2004 and 2007. This 2017 is a big improvement in ride, quiteness, and technology. It seems much smother. Although it has an increased HP motor, performance seems about the same, but fuel economy shows a 10% improvement.

I WILL NEVER LEASE OR BUY ANOTHER SIENNA AGAIN

Fernando Sepulveda, 12/03/2018
2017 Toyota Sienna SE 8-Passenger 4dr Minivan (3.5L 6cyl 8A)

So I leased a 2017 Toyota Sienna SE in May of 2017 and ill admit... as 31 year old with only one child it wasn’t a vehicle of choice but was a vehicle of practicality and needs being that I’m a single full time dad and also help my mother take care of my Grandmother who travels everywhere with a wheelchair, walker and canes so it was kind of a no brainer and and it’s a vehicle my mother and I were both comfortable driving with plenty of room for the whole family and lets face it!...it’s the only nice, sporty looking minivan out there. So anyways it seemed like a smart decision at the time and my mother had always wanted one so I surprised her with it. NOW THE NOT SO GOOD...So here I am 19months into my lease and I’m hating life.. just hit 11,000 miles and my check engine and traction control light have come on 4 times now with today being the latest. I’ve taken it to the dealer where I leased it from every time and to be honest they are great! So kudos to you South Coast Toyota in Costa Mesa CA and my service advisor Ray Carrera who has been awesome through this whole nightmare. So here’s a small list and complaints, issues and repairs that’s I’ve had or have problems with. 1) Gas Guzzler: I do a mix of city and freeway driving and this van guzzles more gas than a V8 and doesn’t get anywhere close to what the Toyota rates and it definely doesn’t seem to have a 20gal tank..as the filler light comes on prematurely but when I fill up it only takes about 16-16.5 gallons which falls short of the 20gal the manufacture suggest. However I was told by my advisor that it does have a pretty big reserve of about four gallons which just sucks because it makes you frequent the fill up station more than you should when you actually have plenty of distance left to go ..... 2) ACCELERATION/TRANSMISSION: Like many of you have stated the acceleration is horrible and sluggish and definetly would cause some safety issues/concerns when you need to accelerate into traffic or high tail it out of a MACK TRUCK’S WAY.. When the car is in eco mode which it is all the time..you really have to get on the gas pedal for it to move and go.. so if your making a right hand turn into traffic definitely always be prepared to floor it from the start but really it’s just better to wait until you have plenty of room/time to go. I’ve definitely learned the hard way with plenty of of angry honks and light flashes. So keep yourself and your family safe and just wait before going.. So now for my service repairs /issues..... CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS: The first time this happend I was probably at a smidge over 8,000 miles when they first light up my dash.. So I took it into the dealer right away and after a few hours they couldn’t find anything wrong with it so they reset the the lights and I got it back the same day. After making it about 15-20 miles the very same day they came on again... So I drove right back and they took in. after about three days they finally gave me a loaner and kept it for about a week or so and they ended up replacing I believe an ignition/engine coil. So cool I pick up my car and everything is going great then about a month later BAM! They are on again.. So I take it in once again for the problem now occurring for the 3rd time and after them having it for about two weeks and a master technician/Toyota engineer getting involved they replaced the ECM hoping that fixed the problem as they explained to me there was a connection issue and they hoped that fixed it and they were pretty sure it would... WRONG!.. so again.. I pick up my car it’s now been a few weeks and things seemed to be going well ive been happy as a clam when BAM! Here we are again today...360 miles later with the same issue. So I’m scheduled to take it in again today after work and to say the very least I'm definitely irritated. So we shall see what they can find and I’ll definitely update you all when I hear word of what going on this time... I’m not saying all Toyota’s or Siennas are bad but there are clearly issues with the 17 Sienna’s and I hope that Toyota steps up and addresses these issues and fixes them.. these are our families we want to keep safe and our lively hoods that are messed with when it comes to these issues and we as consumers deserve safe and reliable cars to transport ourselves and families that we expect from Toyota because as it is now I don’t feel that the 17 Sienna’s are safe or reliable and I don’t feel like I’ve gotten what I’m paying for.. So I hope this helps all of you in the market for a Sienna to make your final decision or at the very least helps give all of you out there expiriencing the same issues answers. So please feel free to comment I’m definitely interested in hearing from anyone else out there with the same issues or hearing from anyone with questions about my experience’s. Thank you

Lexus-smooth ride

Dave, 11/27/2017
2017 Toyota Sienna Limited Premium 7-Passenger 4dr Minivan (3.5L 6cyl 8A)
14 of 15 people found this review helpful

Love our new 2017 Sienna Ltd Premium - it's nearly perfect: Lexus-smooth ride, extremely comfortable seats (unlike the 2018 Odyssey seats which are hard and very uncomfortable), fairly quiet ride, excellent JBL sound system to complement the Blu-Ray entertainment system, spacious seating, deep well cargo. No issues with the new transmission for 2017 - this likely impacts only those 2017 Siennas built before Feb. 2017 (and Toyota has a firmware update for it) ... my Sienna is a Oct. 2017 date build with 1 mile on the odometer when I purchased it. The backup monitor lacks resolution sharpness but good enough. Generally, I like the latest tech stuff (which was why I initially considered the 2018 Odyssey Elite) ... but in this case, I prefer the older style: knob for transmission gear changes on the Sienna (instead of buttons on the Odyssey) and the round knobs for the A/C on the Sienna. Btw, the Sienna A/C vents are on the ceiling which is where it should be. Most people don't realize that the 2018 Odyssey A/C vents for the 2nd/3rd rows are on the side of the vehicle, not on the ceiling ... this is a design flaw and buyers in hot weather states might not like this (btw, I don't work for Toyota and I like Hondas in general ... I just happen to be very thorough in my shopping research). Previously, I had a 2010 Sienna Limited (Loved everything about it except the dynamic cruise option) and our newly purchased 2017 Sienna Limited Premium is so much of an improvement over the 2010 model. It's likely the next Sienna design change will occur in 2 years but no guarantee to be better. (My 2010 Sienna was actually better than 2011 Sienna in terms of quiet ride ... I believe Toyota made improvements in 2015. And in 2017: new engine and new transmission ... so my new purchase is actually a good value: same body as the 2011 Sienna but vastly improved in the 2017 Sienna). Currently, Toyota has a $3,000 rebate which helps make the purchase a really good deal. My expectations, as with all Toyotas, is long term reliability (I didn't rate reliability since it's a new vehicle). I do wish it had better mpg than 19 in the city, but this is the norm for minivans today (unless you opt for the Chrysler hybrid) and keep in mind that for 2017, Toyota came with a new, bigger engine for the Sienna with a 1 mpg improvement. I also looked at the 2017 Toyota Highlander/Lexus RX which is a top seller for Toyota ... but it lacks the space of a minivan, and I love the convenience of a sliding door. I have 2 kids, and my son likes his private space in the 3rd row while my daughter enjoys her ottoman style 2nd seat. With the new Sienna, we took a road trip and the valet person complimented about how the Sienna Blu-Ray built in video monitor folds down in increments. The 2018 Sienna has cosmetic changes - not a big fan of the gaping front grille, which is another reason I purchased the 2017 model. Overall, excellent family vehicle especially for long drives.

Big Transmission Problem - STAY AWAY (UNSAFE)

Buyer's Regret, 06/17/2017

I bought this car brand new after test driving a couple of times. As the computer learned the driving habits, it's supposed to adjust (fine tune) the transmission over a period of time. Well, this fine-tuning thing didn't improve the drive. I took the car to the dealer 3 times. The dealer said they couldn't find anything wrong during the first two sessions. They offered to reset the computer. Finally, the 3rd session, the service manager finally admitted that this is a know problem, but he couldn't do anything about it. I tested drive another brand new Sienna and it's pretty bad as well. I'm an engineer, and crying and regretting buying this car. FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS BUY A FLAWED SIENNA. PLEASE STAY AWAY. I REGRET NOT BUYING ANOTHER HONDA ODYSSEY. Here are my problems: 1. This occurred five times - When driving on the street at 40-45 mph and slowing down to a stop on a red light at the intersection, the car jerks (stutters like the transmission or drive train gears can’t transition) significant enough for my wife on the front passenger seat to ask what’s wrong with the car. The car had 60 miles on the odometer when the first occurrence happened. The car now has 275 miles on the odometer. 2. I do not feel any acceleration for a second or so then it kicked in with a big gear kick, especially when: a. I go over speed bumps at a slow speed, and press on the throttle after going over the bump. b. I lift off the throttle approaching a corner, and pressing on the throttle half way through the corner. Feels like the gear slipped (engine whines, but no acceleration) then exerted a big gear kick. 3. I noticed that while I turn left on curve road (in the neighborhood) around 15-20 mph, the gear stutters a little bit, enough to feel like the wheel hits loose gravels. 4. In general, it appears the engine whines a lot when accelerating from stop. It feels like there isn’t much torque. 5. Overall the driving experience for the past couple of weeks has been dreadful. Spending a lot of hard earned money for a car that constantly reminds me of problems is not a happy state of mind. I tried my brother-in-law’s 2014 Sienna, and it does not exhibit any of the problems above.

Very Happy With This XLE Minivan

I read the reviews concerning the 8 speed transmission, so I paid attention during the test drive. I also rented an SE for the weekend before purchasing. Being a musician, I always had a minivan since the 1970s. I use it for transporting grandkids instead of musical instruments these days. I bought the XLE because I wanted blind spot monitoring and leather. This is the most comfortable vehicle I've owned. I have not experienced a problem with the transmission. You do have to press the accelerator more than other vehicles or previous Siennas to get a brisk acceleration. I've gotten used to it. If I am in heavy city traffic I sometimes use the PWR mode rather than the ECO mode. I am getting an average of 23 mpg combined driving, with 30 mpg at 65 mph, and 28 mpg at 75 mph. Updated Review 12/2019. I am getting the same mileage now with 22,000 miles on the van. I've had no problems and I plan on keeping it a long while. I have used the nav and it's fine for me, although most times I use my phone for nav. Once when I had to accelerate fast from a stop merging on a freeway I was surprised how much power it had when I floored it. I rented a Pacifica on a trip with the family and noticed the Pacifica was a little more fun to drive, but the adults in the back row were not happy with the space. We returned two days later for a Sienna. When we go on trips together there are 7 or 8 people, including two car seats, and I can say this is the most comfortable way to go, although I haven't tried the Odyssey.

Drives like a Buick from the 1970's

Our 2009 Honda van was running great, but lacked many of the newer technology and safety options offered in today's cars. The 2018 Honda van just came out and the dealers were not budging on price. The new Honda vans have a steeply angled windshield that causes you to hit your head when entering the vehicle. Very annoying. So we tried the Siena. Entry/exit is very good. The cabin feels spacious from the drivers/passenger seat. There was also plenty of room in the back of the Siena for our bikes. Now the bad news. The Siena drives like a Buick from the 1970's. A very nice ride, but floats down the road like a boat. The steering is very numb. As others reported, the transmission is terrible. To get the proper downshift for acceleration, you need to lean on the accelerator peddle. Then the engine downshifts too far and the engine screams as you accelerate. Not good. I am also planning a trade.

I've owned our last Sienna for 12+ years. The '17 has many similarities, but feels like it's on steroids! Loving the ride, creature comforts and electronics. If any downside, I'd say while the ECO setting gives better mileage a find myself turning that setting off when driving around town as the minivan is much more responsive around town when its off. Overall, I'm very pleased with our purchase.

Disappointing compared to our 2008

We drove a brand new 2017 (only 27 miles when we drove off the lot) as a loaner while our 2008 Sienna was serviced and I was curious to see what I would think of it given our current van is getting a bit long in the tooth. On the whole it was very disappointing. The engine felt really weak- my wife compared it the 1988 Corolla she drove in college- versus our surprisingly quick 2008 Sienna. Fuel economy was worse as well at less than 19mpg compared to about 21mpg with our current Sienna. The interior felt like a major downgrade with thin, cheap plastic surfaces. We also missed a lot of nooks and crannies- like covered storage in the door armrests. The seats were considerably less supportive and comfortable than what we are used to. On the whole I think we will stay with our 2008 Sienna for a few more years.

Transmission extremely poor. Not shifting on time and kept down shifting while turning, slowing down. So I have to bring it up at least 5k RPM to maintain the speed. Feels like V4/1500cc car. No power at all. Anyone sees this comment don't buy sienna!!!

Not a fan of this van.

I have waited several months to review this vehicle, waiting to have something more positive to say about it. I had low expectations when I decided to shop for a minivan. I bought a fully loaded Sienna thinking that i would be buying the best of several bad options. I probably did, but that reflects poorly on the choices available today. I will lead with the most positive thing I have to say about it. The captains chairs in the back seat are very comfortable as back seats go. There is lots of adjustability fore and aft, allowing for a lot of leeway in the 2nd and 3rd row in terms of leg room. Even the 3rd row has reclining backs. It is the most comfortable I’ve ever encountered and the rest of the passengers don’t have to suffer for it. But they will suffer for other reasons. The Sienna just has many ergonomic issues and just poor implementation of what other manufacturers have been doing right for over a decade. I tend to buy high end German cars, but even my old 2003 FX35 had a more functional Nav/infotainment package. This is my 9th car with a modern nav/infotainment system. I can think of only one that was worse. It relies almost exclusively on voice commands to run all of it. I’ve gone through the voice training exercises but it didn’t help for me. I’ve had cars with voice control for 10 yrs now but this system requires that you use it. Your passenger cannot help you out. I’ve had in car internet/WiFi in several cars since 2012, and my Toyota salesman was convincing in his claim that their cellphone based app would get me a lot of the same features. I drive a lot and use Nav heavily. I was depending on the app to serve as my seamless internet portal to provide an up to date database of POIs. I was disappointed to learn that the app/van require a sign in (username and password) ever time the car is turned on. Bluetooth calls work as you’d expect but the app log in makes it virtually useless. Prepare to use your phone for everything as though you bought a $20K car. My service manager said that he doesn’t use it either and suggested that I just use SIRI and Bluetooth it into the van’s speakers. The console is a horrible deep bin. A bin with no light, USB, or 12V socket. There is one USB slot on the dash but none in either glove box. There is a sizeable gap between the console and the dash. I still don’t know why. A sloppy purse receptacle? So if you are wanting to charge your phone you have to drape the cord across the gap to a cup holder. It’s only a matter of time before my dogs tear the whole thing out, USB slot and all. There is no convenient place to put your phone out of sight. I was disappointed with the DVD and drop down monitor. Supposedly you can do split screen video on that wide screen. I think there is an HDMI input somewhere for it. Maybe I had a setting wrong but the dvd image was not widescreen format even though it was centered on the really wide monitor. The door armrests up front are horrible. 30 yrs later and exactly the same as my dad’s 1987 Camry. 1/4” of foam batting over a fiberboard armrest. Really uncomfortable after an hour of use. Plus, I drove my elbo through that Camry armrest eventually. :-) The leather? on the center armrest is really cheap looking. I don’t use it for fear of destroying it before I resell the thing. The braking is alarmingly worse than my Q7 despite being1000lbs lighter. The acceleration is much worse too despite being lighter and having a much bigger V6. It does get better mileage at 20-22.5 mpg. Speaking of gas, I’m still not used to unlocking the fuel door from the inside. All of our cars since 2007 have used the same keyless entry that the doors use. My van has keyless entry but it is not connected to the fuel door. The transmission feels pretty sloppy when it’s searching for a gear sometimes. I don’t know if it’s wearing or just a poor transmission. The weirdest issue I’ve had with it revolves around cargo. I brought 2X10s home from the hardware store. I was amazed to find that there was no handle or hook to secure the hatch, inside or out. I also transported two sheets of plywood in the van. (It was a selling point for me). My salesman told me plywood would fit and Plywood would fit in my sister’s 2006 Sienna. But I learned that my seat automatically moves all the way back when the car is put in park. I did not know this because I always have the seat all the way back. The seat pressed the plywood against the rear hatch breaking the latch. The mechanics could not get the hatch open. I had to leave the van at the dealership, plywood still inside until they could order a new latch. $750. Toyota would not provide a loaner because they didn’t want my two puppies in their cars. They did not have a shuttle so I had to wait 1 1/2 hrs for the parts cargo van to drive us home. Just a sad lack of customer service.

Our previous vehicle was a 2014 Honda Odyssey EX-L that we had leased and we were going to wait until the 2018 came out to lease another one. But no one could tell us when that was going to happen. Rather than extend the lease, we decided to give Toyota a chance. We found an SE and drove it compared to an XLE, the SE is as "sporting" as a minivan is going to be. The XLE was too soft in it's responses and we liked the styling on the SE better. Our is an SE Premium and since it's an SE Premium, it has everything you could want but oddly not things found in an XLE or Limited van. Our initial impressions were good. It was quieter over the road than our Odyssey ( road, tire and suspension noise has been a Honda "problem" for years, I've owned plenty of Hondas/Acuras) the ride was a bit better. The 3.5 V6 in the Toyota is strong and it's nice to have full manual control of the gears when you need it, which Honda doesn't allow. The seats are OK, I think the Honda has better seats. But after 8 months of ownership, I wish we'd waited for the new Odyssey. The V6 in the Sienna has great power, but only at high RPM's. The "Eco" mode is extremely intrusive and makes the vehicle feel sluggish, especially where I live with plenty of hills. You can change this by putting it in "Power" mode, but you have to change it every time you start the car. The eight-speed is slow and clunky sometimes and there's been a few "WTF" downshifts at slow speed that were horribly rough. Toyota's Maintenance Minder system is obnoxious, especially if you are following their maintenance plan as provided with a new vehicle. At 5000 miles, the system displays "Maintenance Required" but if you are following ToyotaCare (which you must for the warranty), it's only a tire rotation. But you HAVE to take it to the dealer to reset the system! In terms of storage and seat configuration, our old Odyssey wins over this Sienna. The third row seat isn't leather, but some awful vinyl that reminds me of my Dad's '78 Toyota truck and it doesn't acknowledge the higher quality vinyl out there like VW's V-Tex. That's inexcusable in a 40k vehicle. The rear vent windows do open, a plus over the Honda. But in the SE, they aren't powered, they just pop open. In the XLE and Limited, they're powered. Even an 87 Plymouth Voyager one of my friends had growing up had mechanical knobs in the ceiling to open the rear vent windows! And finally, the Entune entertainment system is clunky and infuriating to use at times. It doesn't sync easily to either my iPhone 6 or my wifes 6s, you have to used the stupid Entune app to make it work. To conclude, this will probably be the only Toyota we ever own and we'll be going back to Honda as soon as we can. Lots of minor annoyances here and that detracts from the enjoyment of the vehicle. *Update*- We are nearing the end of our lease with our 2017 Sienna SE. My original gripes about the powertrain hold true and I find the Entune system awful compared to nearly anything else out there. I've owned multiple cars from different manufacturers and Entune is by far the worst in-car entertainment I've dealt with. In short, we shopped a 2019 Odyssey EX-L and the Honda seems like an overall better package period. Since Toyota only feels like mildly updating the Sienna since this body style debuted in 2010, the Sienna is only for Toyota faithful at this point. I won't be said to see our Sienna go, though I do think it's a handsome van in SE trim for 2017. Not a fan of the 2018+ "triangle snout" on the new vans. The only way Toyota might get us back is with a Sienna hybrid, but even that's doubtful at this point. Not a bad vehicle, it's been reliable for 3 years. But we won't get another one. Update: Nearly a year into an 2020 Honda Odyssey EXL lease. The Honda is down on a bit of room compared to the 2017 Sienna we had, but I won’t be going back to Toyota for a minivan or any vehicle anytime soon. My hope is that Honda does a hybrid Odyssey to compete with the new Sienna which is all hybrid and the Chrysler Pacifica. But even if they don’t, I prefer Honda’s over Toyota anyway.

We have been very disappointed with the quality of 2017 Toyota Sienna Van Powertrain and its workmanship. Van has just 1000 miles on it and it runs like piece of junk. There is no power and sometimes it becomes very risky on the road when it start losing its power. Transmission sucks and it's really hazard for life sometimes when you drive on speedy road. We raised the concern with Round Rock Toyota and service the van three time since bought within two months. They have no answer to the problem though they accepted that car has some major problem. Service dept. shared Toyota Customer service number and after 4 weeks of communication on paper Toyota Customer service said they can't help CAUTION: I SUGGEST ALL THE NEW BUYERS OF TOYOTA CARs TO BE CAREFUL AS IT'S A HAZARD TO YOUR LIFE AND WASTE OF MONEY TO BUY TOYOTA.

Overall, the best minivan on the market for comfort, reliability, and value. Do yourself a favor and DON'T buy the AWD, there is no spare tire and the run-flats are $400+/ea to replace. I drove from MA to MD to buy a limited premium FWD because they do not carry the FWD in New England. My favorite parts of the car are the advanced technology package with radar cruise control, the visibility, the dual moonroofs, Ottoman seats with leg rests, entertainment system, and comfortable seats. I will say for a $50K car, the interior body panels seem very cheap, especially the compartments in the rear. The front cabin is very nice and seems upscale. The transmission, fortunately or unfortunately, is the transmission of the future it has 8 speeds and it searches for the best gear which is not a problem and not a safety issue, it just is what it is. If you want to accelerate in this minivan, you need to apply your foot to the pedal purposefully and comit, or put it in ECT/PWR mode, otherwise, it will show hesitation because it's looking for the driver to make up its mind. When the van is in ECT/PWR mode it is FAST, similar to my 300hp Lexus GS, so check that button out on the steering wheel it's great for merging, passing, etc. What surprised me most about the van was how comfy the back seat is, even for an adult. Not only is it roomy, but it reclines! Very comfy for long drives! Update: We still have the sienna and absolutely love it. We bought a Lexus GX460 too which is huge, but is so tiny inside compared to the sienna. Would buy the sienna all over again. zero problems. ***Update: 40,000 on the odo and zero problems just scheduled maintenance. This is what owning a new car should be like. **update, 55,000 miles and it drives like new. Only issue was a door hinge issue that Toyota paid for 100% through a customer support program. I would absolutely buy this car all over again. SO much room! ***70,000 miles and still problem-free. Just did brakes and tires. I looked at the new sienna but they got rid of the rear sunroof so we are sticking with the 2017 as the kids love the rear sunroof!

Mine is the "L" trim so no one should expect any luxuries, and I did not. But there are some no-brainers Toyota designers should have included or re-designed: 1. Privacy glass, 2. Roof rack stretching entire length of the roof, 3. Better sounding audio, 4. Hide the USB port from view!!! 5. Power-operated quarter windows, 6. Removable front passenger seat. Overall I'm satisfied with this vehicle for it has what I need (with the exceptions listed) and does not have any of the expensive, fancy "options". One important design flaw: dark speedometer. The digits are not white and in certain lighting conditions impossible to see even during the day. Regarding the roof rack: not only the factory-designed one (which is not even available on L trim) is bad, the roof itself cannot support any mountable ones from any vendor, e.g. Thule, Yakima. These vendors respond with "there are no safe mounting points on this roof". This is a major screw-up, Toyota! After 1.5 years of use I can add that overall I'm happy with this vehicle, with one exception: AC being very slow to start. Takes a long time to cool the interior on a hot day. Update: After 2.5 years of use I'm glad I have this make/model, with all the above shortcomings still bothering me to some degree. One more to report though: looks like after 2 years of use the gas mileage started to get worse. My driving patterns and style has not changed dramatically to justify 13% decrease in miles per gallon. Overall, I like this 2017 Sienna even more after I saw what Toyota did to the 2021 model! Update: After 5 years of use I'm satisfied with this vehicle, with all the above shortcomings still bothering me to some degree. One more disappointing event was the battery died after 4 years, which I consider way too early.

This Mini Van gas mileage is no where near the listed amount on the sticker. We drove the Mini Van on a 3,900 mile trip which was 99% open road and averaged just over 22 miles per gallon. The Navigation system is terrible and we had to us the Garmin on the trip. Zero dealer support. I have owned two Avalon's and one Sienna in the past and this current Sienna is not up to past standards. I will never purchase another Toyota in my life.

We have owned 3 Toyotas in the past, all with Excellent experiences (great quality components, very few repairs, reasonable maintenance costs, all driven into the 150K-200K mile range). We bought our 2017 Toyota Sienna brand new. At around 15K miles wheel bearing needed replaced. At 33K miles we had to replace the tires. At 40K the automatic window switch went bad. At 43K a Strut went bad and had to be replaced. From about 20K miles one there has been a clunking sound when we go over a bump, come to a stop, or accelerate, and the dealer has not been able to find out where the noise is coming from. Engine noise and the Air Conditioning vent noise are significantly louder than our prior 2008 sienna. We are so disappointed and dissatisfied with our 2017 Toyota Sienna and now are not confident in purchasing another Toyota again.

I traded in my 2011 Sienna LE for this 2017 XLE. While the exterior is the same (it's time for a redesign), the cars are very different. The guts of the car, the engine and transmission (8 speed) are all new. While the transmission can be a little hesitant, if you keep your foot on the gas, it quickly figures out what you want. The biggest change from my previous Sienna is the steering being lighter. It's kind of like driving a luxury limo. This car came with the XLE Navigation Package which takes some getting use to, but, overall I enjoy the new technology features. I am happy I moved up to the 2017.

BUY A TOYOTA WITHOUT A 8 SPEED AUTO WHILE YOU CAN

This is a great van the only problem is the eight speed transmission that not many reviews I read befor I bought metioned. The transmission in this van gear hunts not in town or accellerating but at cruise even at 80 mph on fairly level terrain it will change gears constantly. I'm not saying all new vehicles don't do this its a problem across the board. I was initially going to but a 2016 for this very reason then there was a safety recall and they told me I couldn't but one till 8/1/17. I resorted to buying a 2017. Now with less than 1000 miles on it I already have figures to trade as soon as they can sell me a 2016. I am not totally blaming Toyota here I think this a e.p.a. B.S. problem about gas mileage test. So like I said but a 2011-2016 while you still can.

"A Golf Car Dressed As A Minivan"

I've been driving a minivan for quite a few years now & tried them all out, I was really looking forward for this new 2017 Sienna XLE until I actually got it... For starters, Its engine is as noisy as a sports car but drives like a Golf Car, the pickup is terrible & I mean "TERRIBLE", I've owned a Toyota Camry & was very impressed so going into this Sienna I wouldn't think twice, But this was a terrible mistake... But of course there's no backing out once you sign the dotted line.. I would rather drive a 99 Town & Country, Toyota should really be ashamed of themselves for releasing such a vehicle & should recall all of there 2017 Sienna's until they figure things out.. Do yourself a favor & stay away from this minivan for now!!!

Pacifica is better.......

I upgraded from the 2012 Sienna to the 2017. The 2017 Sienna was fine/slightly disappointing, until I rented the new Pacifica for a week on vacation and realized how much better it was. The new Sienna transmission makes acceleration noisy and delayed. Which makes the engine seem under-powered, and not as easy/responsive as the 2012. The electronics stack in the 2017 is better than the 2012, but still feels dated compared to other new cars. Everything else is the same as what they introduced 7 years ago. Now just disappointed.

Living the minivan life

If you like minivans, this is the car for you. It is comfortable, drives beautifully and has all the bells and whistles: blind spot signal, dvd player, automatic rear seat buttons that lower or raise the seats, etc. Fuel economy is very good for a minivan. We really like it.

Great Product

Toyota makes a great product and they did not fall short on the 2017 Sienna. I'm renting the LE fwd model and I'm surprised how easy this vehicle is to drive, park and how comfortable it feels on long and short distance drives. The shifts throw it's 8spd automatic transmission are smooth and quick under ECO mode. If you turn ECO mode off, the shift a ferm, but not harsh. The engine delivers good power(296hp on all trim levels...highest in its class with great fuel economy) but can be a bit loud under heavy load (fully acceleration with ECO mode on or off). The exterior of the Sienna is pleasing to the eye for most people. In higher trim levels, you can get fog lamps, lower body treatment and Altezza rear tail lights. The interior is an accommodating please to be. Comfortable seat front, middle and 3rd row. Driver gets a power adjustable seat with lumbar, while the others get manual siders. This model has the stoll-a-way second row middle seat which gives this Sienna the capability to seat 8 passangers. Great if you are an Uber driver. Super easy to see out of. This makes this van a little more affordable because, you don't really need the blind spot monitoring system, which I believe, it's offered on higher trim levels. In the LE trim and higher, you can get the Sienna equipped with AWD. I'm only giving this vehicle for stars simply because I've noticed a few things that could be better or improve. I've noticed when I'm by myself in the vehicle, the 2nd row and third roll seats vibrate. I did not get any complaints from my other customers however that is concerning. I believe if they stiffen the chassis just a little more that was all the problem. I do wish that the fuel door release mechanism was located in a different area . It is very easy to mistaken it for the hood release and for those who are not familiar with the location of the fuel door release , it could make it difficult in the dark to find the fuel door release . Also, unless you get a really good night's sleep and/or you have passengers with you the interior can tend to be a little bit boring. This can cause some drivers to feel tired and/or sleepy while driving. I strongly encourage Toyota does a little more treatment to their interior. Had a similar issue with a 2015 Camry.

Acceleration is a bit sluggish compared to other minivans and cars. Gas mileage at this time is lower then expected but we still have under 1000 miles on it so it is not broken in yet. Winter driving in city condition is getting about 16.5 mpg

When you have 5 grandsons all uner 7 you need a Toyota Sienna. It's great at seating 8 so I can take all the boys and three adults to take care of them all. AWESOME Vehicle but it does take some time learning how to maneuver it for an old bird like me. Once that was accomplished it was a breeze to drive and I really love it. Hope it outlives me!! I still love this van. It’s roomy, rides smooth and easy to get my grand sons in and out of. Now they are 11,10,9, 7 and 5 and they all still love that we can all be together on our trips to playgrounds, skyzone and amusement centers PLus lunch and dinner outings!

We had been looking at an Odyssey, but ended up with the Sienna instead. The only thing that would make me happier would be an additional USB port or two. The ride is comfortable, and it continues to surprise me with how much I can put into this car - both people and cargo wise. I love that I can remotely open the doors and my girls can climb in, as well as the rear button to close the door. Comfort, quality - highly, highly recommend a Sienna!

As I read these reviews, I see some are having trouble with performance and transmission. I am not experiencing any of those problems. I have about 1200 miles on the van. It has better pickup than my 2006 Sienna. I do drive easy and get great gas milage. I bought another Sienna because of the reliability track record. I put 168k on my 06 without any breakdowns!

Update? Well, it's still running, lol. Hard to find decent service, the dealer didn't even check the tire pressure when I had the tires rotated. Tire pressure light on when I went in and on when I went to leave. Now wondering if they did ANY of the service work as it runs much better now that I'm taking it to a local shop for all service. Only likes Sunoco gas, hates Costco gas. The grill is peeling, the paint scratches from my nails, the carpets won't get clean - not the same quality as the 2004 Camry which is finally going to make it's last journey to scrap. Original review: I bought a 2004 Camry in December 2003 - it’s still on the road with 200k plus miles. My 2017 Sienna was new off the lot in April 2017. New tires and alignment at 30,000. Saturday night at 11:30 pm, it won’t start. Had to put a new battery in on Sunday when no dealers are open and of course at 36,275 miles. The transmission issues and lack of power are really a driving nightmare. So bad that a friend asked if I needed to add oil when driving the hills of Pittsburgh last November. My fourthToyota might be my last. I am SO disappointed and will no longer refer friends and family.

If you are expecting a go kart, you're looking in the wrong place. This is a family mover that does that job wonderfully. We own an old truck, a Mini, a Lexus SUV, and a Porsche. This is a family vehicle that does that wonderfully. Plenty of power. Heads up the mountain to ski with great grip and poise. Hauls kids with ease and comfort. My mom has a Honda Odyssey, and they perform similarly, but I love the power and all wheel drive of the Sienna. Great van!

There is very little I can say that I like about this car. We have 4 kids and need a car this size. It is practical for our family. However, it's unreliable, poorly designed, and I've had safety issues with it. When it was only a year old, the tailgate tried to auto-close onto an overfill trunk. In the process, it bent the frame of the car and the tailgate. Even after getting an entirely new tailgate, it has never been the same. We've had issues starting it and with servicing it as well. I will NEVER buy another Toyota. Poorly designed garbage!

This 2017 Sienna Limited was a replacement for my 2004 Toyota Sienna LE. Safty of my family was one of my main reason for selecting it in 2004 and 2017. The comfort of a long trip in it is always appreciated by family and we take family trips very often in it. Smooth driving is also an advantage of this minivan.
