Disappointing reliability from a new Toyota

Bought new Limited Rav4 last February thinking in Toyota reliability. Willing to pay extra for this reliability. Disappointed already had to take vehicle to dealer on dash sensors and windows tint bubbles. Definitely not the quality one would expect from a Toyota.

Needs a turbo or better yet bring back the 6 cyl engine option. Love to see the Lexis hybrid engine where its a combo electric/gas, not an either or option.

Avoid The Rav 4 Adventure

TGH1001, 08/21/2019
2019 Toyota RAV4 Adventure 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl 8A)

My story is very similar to many others here. Less than five thousand miles and when the car shifts going between 25 and 30 mph there's a rubber on rubber sound and a jerk. Now its doing the same thing as I brake. Toyota is scheduled to replace the transfer case next week but after reading these reviews I have ZERO confidence this will resolve the issue. Now I'm also concerned about other issues lurking under the hood that haven't presented themselves. I feel sick!

Sputtering and Delayed Response

Lindsey L., 11/06/2019

I've driven Toyota vehicles for 20 years now and this is the first time that I'm not happy with my vehicle. The new engine causing sputtering and delayed reactions. I honestly feel the delayed reactions are dangerous characteristic. It will either not respond or respond to aggressively making you question how to drive your vehicle and putting you in dangerous situations with other drivers. I got the software update and it made a huge improvement for about 30 days and then it slowly started having a lack or response and jerking again.

Toyota 2019 Rav4 AWD, Thumping & bumping

LWG, 06/23/2019
2019 Toyota RAV4 LE 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl 8A)

I have owned 3 Rav4's and one Camry in the last 10 years. Each have been perfectly trouble free vehicles, not this 2019 with just 2,000 miles. By profession I am an automotive instructor and this vehicle would scare me into a repair shop with its rough down shifting 8 speed AT and the loud jolting or bumping within the random driveline connect/disconnect . How did this negative condition get by all the road test experts who drove it with out even a whisper or clues such was present? Issues 8 speed transmission sloppy down shifts at random times and a thumping drive line that feels like it is ready to drop the rear driveshaft just as you pull in to park it when going from Drive range to park on the gear selector. Yes the whole car shakes, in fact, I thought someone one had hit me lightly from the rear, until I discovered no one was behind me! Shame on you Toyota, how could you guys have missed such major Issue?

better gas mileage than expected

I also tested the Forester, Tiguan and CX5 and found the RAV fit me best and checked all the right boxes. I didn't consider the CRV because I don't trust their turbo 1.5 liter motor. I find the RAV styling and ergonomics to be great, and the standard XLE dash has a clear and elegant layout. The interior is more handsome than the Forester and the ergos are better than the CX5. My spouse has a Camry so we may have a bit of Toyota familiarity bias. Everything but the "entune" app works exactly as I would expect, and the placement of the controls falls right where I look for them, the informational displays are logical and appealing. The safety features and things like auto-headlight-dimming, heated steering wheel and seats, radar cruise work great. On paper, the CX5 should be the same size or roomier than the RAV but I'm 5'11" 220# and the RAV seats fit me better than the CX5. Also, the CX5 joystick controls were not intuitive for me at all. I wanted to like the CX5 more, it is the best looking inside and out, but the interior was too tight, it seemed a bit claustrophobic, and the gas mileage and ergonomics were not as good as the RAV. I liked the Forester as my second choice but where the RAV has an elegant black interior, the Forester was beset by shiny or unattractive orange interior trim pieces (on the model-equivalent sport package) and the interior styling looked more like the bargain Impreza trim which, while they drive nice, is not a compliment. The Tiguan rode great and was beautiful and practical but VW reliability and cost of ownership are similar to Audi so it lost out on the long term financial outlook. The Forester was great in most ways but the less-appealing styling and long term cost of maintenance (parts and service) were a deciding factor. All four of these SUVs seemed to handle fine, with the Tiguan making the best noises on the road and the RAV being slightly louder but not far off the others. Reading the reviews, I agree that when the gearbox is set to "eco mode", low speed rolling starts (creeping through stop signs, for example) are sometimes a bit jerky, as if the car may be thinking about trying to start in 2nd gear (8 speed auto trans) to optimize gas mileage. The payback is that I'm getting 29-32mpg in mixed driving and 35-37mpg on rural trips (~55mph). This is better mileage than advertised and I've usually gotten worse than advertised for the same commute. Also, if I put the gearbox in normal or sport mode in the city, it shifts great and that problem does not appear. In the end, the RAV4 won out for me on ergos and styling, interior and out, and predicted reliability and resale value. I think the RAV4 is a great looking vehicle inside and out, understanding that it's a subjective opinion and others may disagree. I kept my last car for 13 years so the long term value and reliability are perhaps more important to me that others who turn cars over more frequently. I'm really happy with my decision to purchase this vehicle. UPDATE: Toyota has resolved the herky-jerky transmission issue via an ECU mapping update. If you have this issue, there is a service bulletin (ECU) update you can get. ref: TOYOTA TSB #T-SB-0107-19

I traded in a really nice Ford Fusion for the 2019 Adventure model in March 2019. The car made an awful noise and Toyota manufacturing basically has not fix as of September 2019. They are still selling the Adventure model, even though they are totally defective and make a terrible noise. Because my garbage vechile was in the service dept in excess of 37 days, I was able to "return it" and trade for a non-AWD model that has a LOWER STICKER PRICE, for the exact same monthly payments + $800 arbitrarily charged to me as a result of mileage. What a garbage company. I hope anybody who bought one reports how horrible it is to anybody that will listen.

Like the 2016 outgoing model much better

I test drove the 2019 RAV LE AWD at my local dealer since it was end of my lease on the 2016 Rav4. I didn't like the sound of the engine compared to the 2016. The steering in the 2016 is super responsive but no so in the new 2019. Overall, I don't really care for the new design as it looks more like the competition (cross between Rogue and Jeep). The older model drives so much better that I wonder what they did to the winning design? I know the ground clearance is a little higher than outgoing model but it seems to me it would be a down grade. I decided to purchase our 2016 as the new 2019 just doesn't compare and is definitely not worth the higher sticker price. I think Toyota better be careful moving forward as they had a winning design with plenty of sales.

Grinding on the Adventure: Fixed by Dealer

UPDATED AGAIN: Now the radio needs to be replaced because back speakers quit working. Two weeks to get part -- we'll see about that. UPDATED: It took about a week, but the grinding appears to be fixed at cost of about $1,100 to Toyota. The service adviser told me that the mechanic was able to replicate the transmission noise and that this is a "known issue" but not a safety issue subject to recall. The part was on back order, so the dealer had the car a couple of extra days. Drove it all weekend, both on the freeway and in suburban stop-and-go traffic and the noise is gone! I do like the RAV 4 overall now that this issue appears solved. Maybe it was coincidence, but as I was picking up my car -- another brand new Adventure identical to mine was pulling in for service. Disappointing that Toyota would let them be sold before fixing them. Original Post Below: Like many here -- I am experiencing this grinding issue. The dealer has ordered this part and I'll drop back in to let everyone know if this is the fix. Very disappointed that I did not get a call from the dealer or Toyota about this issue, which they must know about with these early 2019 production vehicles. Description: CLUTCH SUB-ASSY, ELE

Love my new rav 4 so far. I think people are confused by what eco mode is? yes its a bit of a dog and shifts allot but it does its job of getting great gas mileage! I'm getting 31mpg average so far. Just run it in sport mode if you need more power. I spend 2 hours a day in rush hour traffic and this thing is perfect for that. The rolling stop issue is for real though and they should address it. very clunky if you slow down to almost a stop and then hit the gas. Engine is a bit noisy, transmission is a bit clunky an it will search for gears more then it should. You just have to learn to drive it and learn it's quirks. I love the new design! I have the xle premeium and I think its a nice trim package. support for android would be nice though. So after writing this honestly it's probably over priced and buying a mazda or jeep would be better... Unless like me you just expect your cars to run forever and get great gas mileage in really bad traffic on 87 pump gas, then my bet is that the Toyota is the best choice.

Look out for Adventure (and Limited) Drivetrain!

Others have reported the "grinding" sound from the RAV4 Adventure driveline disconnect, and it is no joke. You can report it to the dealership and once they hear it too they are instructed to call Toyota. It's a dead-end so far, because they don't have a fix. Think about driving your friends around in your new car while they listen to it sound like it's about to self-destruct at 30 mph. It sounds like someone stabbing a cow - a deep intermittent "Moooooo" once it gets warmed up and you are driving at suburban speeds. I've had it happen so frequently that it's a joke. Not to mention, whatever is going on can't really be good for the car long-term. FIX IT! This plus the jerky shifts, lack of low-end power and clumsy acceleration make this a less than satisfying new car experience. Toyota quality has taken a hit with this model. Beware!

We traded our 2014 Toyota Venza for the Rav4 Limited and we are very happy with our purchase. It's not as smooth and quiet as our 2007 La Crosse or our 2011 Impala but this vehicle rides and handles great and gets good gas mileage. The seats are very comfortable and it is easy to get in and out of with my bad back. My wife is on her 4th Toyota Camry so we have owned a total of 6 Toyotas and they all have been very pleasant and comfortable to drive and very reliable. We drove about 3000 miles from Colorado to Indiana & Ohio and the RAV4 performed beautifully. To update this review we took two more road trips with our RAV4 Limited. One to Tucson and one to Yellowstone and once again this vehicle performed beautifully. We live in Denver so it does well in the mountains and on the open road. It has a little more cargo room than the Venza so it is a perfect car for our retirement travel Update july2020. Our RAV4 is still doing a great job for us. No problems. This update is on july 31, 2022. We are still very happy with our RAV4. We recently drove 2600 miles from Denver to Missoula Montana and then to Custer South Dakota. We averaged 28.4 MPG driving a mixture of roads from 40 mph to 80 mph. Had a great vacation with no problems from the RAV.

Nothing Near Smooth

Have you ever had a car that has terrible transmission. This would be the car for you. Whenever we come to a near stop, the stop itself is very rough and jolt like. Then if you want to accelerate quickly the car hurdles you forward before the acceleration even starts. In order for it to not happen you have to be very gradual about it. Since having this car for about 2 weeks our family are constantly having headaches. I would not call a car efficient and the best selling car if the car gives people headaches everywhere. Additionally the engine is very noisy, I get it if it was in sport mode or something, but since we bought it the car has always been in eco mode. You would think it would be quieter, but in reality that is just not the case here. Honestly the car that I had before which was the 2006 Highlander Hybrid was way much better. Even though the reason that we turned it in was because our exhaust system was in terrible shape, the ride itself was always smooth.

The transmission is very poor. Very slow & hesitation for accelerating, not good especially if you are entering the xway and trying to get up to speed, or changing lanes. The card bucks and pitches, when braking, and really hesitates acceleration -like stop & go on the xway; I am NOT happy and this is my 5th Toyota, 3rd Rav4. I do not feel safe

The noise from this car is too much. I just realized that many people that own this model are complaining of the noise. Toyota needs to figure out the problem and fix all of this vehicles by recalls before their good brand name loses its value. The new size and safety features are good but we need them paired with an equally good engine. We shouldn't have to deal with noise from a car this new

Transfer case noise and Entune error message

R David, 08/01/2019

Bought the first redesigned RAV4 Limited from our usually trusted dealer. There was and is an intermittent buzzing/grinding noise from the AWD Transfer Assembly system and they replaced it. That didn't work so they took the car back into service and replaced "clutch" parts etc. and after a week of keeping the car still same problem. Then they backed off and decided to do nothing and stop helping. Also the Entune system, gives a download error message every time the ignition restarts (after a few minutes) and you have to push OK each time. Again, no repair known. The car looks great, handles and rides beautifully but these defects are so troubling. My advice if you want a RAV4, buy the hybrid. The reviews report less noisy engine, more power, and a different AWD system that, hopefully, will have no issues. Otherwise, stay away from a Toyota compact SUV!

Not like the previous generation

My wife and I had a great experience with a 2016 Rav4 rental. Rented in 2018 and drove from portland to sf bay area. Smooth engine and transmission with 40k miles. So last week we rented a 2019 rav4 with 13k and drove from Seattle to Vancouver and back. Both were the LE base models. The new one was so bad my wife even mentioned how she didn't like driving it. First, the transmission shifts abruptly at low speeds. There is a definite jerk from 1st to 2nd gear. If you get back on the gas pedal after slowing down it will then downshift harshly. The engine is loud and rackety. Supposedly it makes over 200hp but I think those horses left the building long ago. It felt slow it most situations. The electronic safety features are intrusive. When I rented it I thought it was strange they were disabled. I turned them on then realized why they were turned off. The lane keep assist is fighting with you all the time. So I turned those safety features off. The apple car play also took 30 seconds to recognize my iphone XR. Tried my wifes iphone, same thing. So you have to sit and wait for the system to recognize your iphone before you can start using your maps, etc. The MPG was about 31 avg. But this is due to the transmission keeping the engine at a very low rpm all the time. At 80mph the engine barely turned 2000rpm. For most freeway use it was closer to 1700 rpm. This is a 4 cylinder, not a V6. When going up a hill at low speeds the transmission doesn't like to downshift so the engine lugs. It will try to go up a hill at 1100 rpm. Naturally there is a vibration. So I think the mpg is achieved primarily by the transmission keeping the engine at a ridiculously low rpm which probably is what makes it feel sluggish. Toyota blew this one.

1. It doesn't accelerate well at all. It struggles to get going. 2. Space is tighter than than 2016 model. 3. Less storage. 4. Noisy engine. 5. Navigation doesn't work properly; the apps don't work right. 6. Cost was way too high for what it provides. They took away good features but still raised the cost. I dont recommend this Rav4 at all. The 2016 was way better.

It handled just fine, no real surprise. I was not impressed given the price jump and the overall restyling. I don't like the oversized plastic grill which really stands out and I can't stand the infotainment screen mounted halfway on the dashboard. Yes, I realize some other manufacturers are doing this, too. Otherwise, it feels and handles just like a Toyota. I decided to go with another manufacturer this time.

I bought a new 2019 rav 4. Hesitates at pull off and jecks. Do not buy. I was able to research it. You have to take it to the dealership and have them to calibrate the electronic control module… ECM. It will work ok after that but the dealership will pretend like they don’t know how to fix it so you have to be consistent. It’s all about the money.

I have a 2017 Rav 4 XLE hybrid. I road in a 2019 RAV4 non-hybrid today that a family member had rented. It felt cheaper than my 2017 rav4 hybrid in regards to the interior and the road noise. It made the vehicle feel comparable to a Nissan Versa in regards to engine/road noise. I hope the 2019 rav4 hybrid comes out better.

I bought a new 2019 rav 4 on April of 2019. I didn’t notice it during the test drive, but it jerks and hesitates at pull off from stop signs and red lights. The transmission is faulty. Do not buy. I’m updating this review. About a year later in July of 2020, after I purchased the 2019 RAV4, I called the Toyota dealership again to see if they found a fix for the issue with the transmission. The dealership never acknowledged that the transmission had an issue that they were aware of. I explained to the dealership again that so many people on all of these different websites have put their reviews about the transmission on the RAV4 so how do you not know about it… They still said that they had no known recall on it and for me to call Toyota customer service. While on the phone with them, I had already found an article that was very very reputable and it laid out the issue and the resolution and so I explained to them that the issue has been addressed in this article and the resolution has been addressed and that I wanted them to fix it and so they had no choice but to fix it. When I called Toyota customer service, they too pretended as though they had no clue of the issue or the resolution. Basically the tech had to re-calibrate the electronic control module (ECM). I bought the car in Apr of 2019 but they didn’t fix it until July of 2020. They only fixed it because I forced them too. I sold the car with 22K miles on it. Bottom line is that Toyota didn’t care. Very hurtful experience.

Groaning Noise

I bought my 2019 Toyota Rav4 Adventure last Feb 2019. After driving 3000 miles a grooaning noise occur when running 20 to 40 miles. I went to the dealer and they told me its a transfer case assembly making the noise. Toyota Dealer told me that they cannot fix the car because Toyota Corporation still trying to find the solution. Also told me that its safety to drive and give a TSA number for my complaint. I am not satisfied with the dealer thats why I seek a lemon lawyer. I talked to lemon lawyer and told me that I have a case. So the lemon lawyer file my case and after 3 months toyota buy back the Toyota Rav4 Adventure. Now I am happy and driving a different car. If you guys have any noise to your 2019 Toyota Rav4 Adventure just find a Lemon Lawyer. Don't suffer for long to wait for the recall.

what a nightmare, 50% of the time the rear hatch doesn't close and the car doesn't lock or after starting to drive the red warning light and sound is on. got the car in august and drove 4,000 miles and the cruise control and lane assist has "no signal" and an annoying beeping and red symbols in dash board. after i park the car and turn off the engine a wheezing noise from the "park" feature. steering-lane assist too far to the left. room for improvement at 25K per vehicle.

I had a 2015 Rav 4 and loved it. After just 2 months loud thumping noises when braking. Tech said solution was to not drive in ECCO mode but in Sports Mode. Ridiculous solution since I will be using more gas. Overall car is noisy besides the thumping.

I got my 2019 RAV4 limited in August. It has 2000 miles on it and has been in the shop several time for the SAME interior cabin noise. We filed a complaint with Toyota corporate because of issues with our local dealer and I asked about the lemon law and they turned into complete jerks! The car is insanely noisy inside and the engine as well. It’s very slow and sounds like it might blow up when you have to accelerate! After they finally seemed to have fixed the interior noise for the 4th time, I’m now hearing a strange whistling noise from the engine when my AC is running. I have a feeling this is going to be never ending. This was my first Toyota and I will NEVER buy one again. I already have plans to trade in already and take a loss.

Peppy SUV with noisy transmission

I purchased the new 2019 RAV4 in March. As others have stated, the transmission is a nightmare, shifts very jerky and its LOUD. Then I started to notice a mooing noise. I called dealer and they replaced the entire clutch system!! Since it was under warranty, I did not have to pay for it, with parts over $1,000! I don't understand why Toyota did not send out a recall to all Toyota Owners for this replacement. I did ask them about it and they said only a few cars were affected so they only replace them if you complain!! I guess my dad was always right when he said, its best to buy a newly designed car a year after they first come out, because they can iron out all the problems in them. Shame on Toyota!!

Had 2 test drives of LE and Adventurer model. Well. driving is good except for louder noise of engine when accelerating. They changed configuration of parts under the hood-possible because the engine belt is so close exposed now. Can compare noise since driving 2009 one. Traction good, suspension works the way better than in older models. Front seats are same-same, even when it looks like the car got wider the middle console "ate" extra space. Exterior is ugly, very ugly. Back of the car is made completely from plastic, sales person jumped around with regular magnetic tag before driving. finally attached on the side of the car(seems I was first and saw this confusion). Did not like the paint-looks not well shiny like last layer of clear coat is missing-don't get me wrong I do worry about it because had and have paint issues with my present RAV4. Review-added features and low quality materials on the body. Will keep old one or look for another make/model. Sorry.

Not what I expected from Toyota

I drive 2019 Rav4 now with 4,000 miles since day one I had noticed a rough shifting 8 speed transmission and clunky drive train. At present both problems exist with no help from dealer or Toyota Motor Company. Before you buy this vehicle, do a thorough road test which incudes slowing down to near stop and re-accelerate. Make more slow downs to near stop as the condition exist at random. When doing so , might feel a sudden clunking in the rear driveline that feels like you been rear ended lightly (bumped) by another vehicle; this happened to me. I looked into my rear view to find such was not the case! It was my New 2019 Rav4? Read my earlier post(s) form more details and others as well. I understand there is a Manufacture bulletin finally out to perhaps fix this condition? I have even had passengers ask me what had happened? Not a pleasant thing to answer regarding a new vehicle, especially a Toyota! See other customers regarding same. How so many professional road test car magazine people, have missed this condition is hard to except? I have made this know to both dealer and Toyota to date no reply, 3 month later?

Inspected 2019 rav4 at local Toyota dealer

I am in the market to replace my 2014 Honda CRV, and when I saw that the local Toyota dealer had received some 2019 Rav4’s, I wanted to compare the competition (I had already test driven the latest CRV a few months ago). At the dealer, I inspected three models: two Limited models and one Adventure model. One of the Limited models was in the showroom, and it had white exterior with a beige leather interior, which was impressive and looked like it could have been on a luxury vehicle. The car exterior looked better in person than in photos online. I wanted to drive the Limited model which was outside (it had a silver exterior), but since another customer was negotiating a purchase of this vehicle, the sales person wouldnt let me drive it until that deal fell thru. Since the dealership only seemed to have 3 vehicles on the lot, they seemed uninterested in allowing me to test drive a vehicle, which I didnt really push back against this (I was going to a nearby Mazda dealer to test drive a cx5 next). I was a little disappointed that I didnt get the test drive in, but the 2019 Rav4 was impressive enough that I will return for a test drive once they get a few more cars on the lot in the new year. Update to original review of 12/31/18: I returned to the same dealer in Irvine to get a test drive in this time. The vehicle I drove was a Limited model with front-wheel drive and fully loaded with technology and safety features. A pretty impressive set of features rivaling my wife’s 2017 Lexus es300h. The sales person let me take an extended test drive two times around their loop which included both street and freeway driving. The main negative was the engine was pretty loud under full throttle when I was on the on-ramp to the freeway. Under normal driving (e.g. not full throttle) the rav4 seemed relatively quiet. I liked the seats and interior, the latter of which could compete with luxury vehicles. The step up into the cabin was a little tricky due to the added vehicle clearance, and I bumped my head a couple of times getting into the passenger seat. I also bumped my head on the rear hatch, which had the automatic open/close feature, but had not been set yet to an appropriate height for adults apparently. When I got home I realized I didnt get a chance to check out the digital rear-view mirror nor the 360 degree panoramic parking assist that was on the feature list. Surprising the sales person did not point these out, as they could be considered some of the more advanced features on the vehicle. In defense there is so much to take in with all the safety features and technology that it’s easy to overlook some items at first glance. I asked about discounts off of MSRP (around $35,600) and the sales person indicated none were available yet due to the newness of the vehicle. This doesnt jibe with reports from other website forums I’ve read recently, but I didnt push on this as I wasnt yet ready to pull the trigger on the purchase. All in all the 2019 Rav4 is an impressive vehicle and one I will be seriously considering over the next few weeks once more discounts off of MSRP become available.

What noisy engine?

After reading so many reviews about the engine noise, I test drove a few RAV4 to experience it myself. The engine sound is more pronounce than you would expect but after test driving a few, it probably grown into me that I don't notice the sound when I accelerate. I have my RAV4 for almost a month now and I barely notice the engine sound. I chose the word sound and not noise because it doesn't sound unpleasant to me. Mix gas mileage average at 34 mpg and 38 on highway. I took it for a ride up on a mountain winding road and I don't see any issues accelerating and down shifting going down the winding road. One issue that I've notice is sometimes on a rolling stop, if I step on the gas a little bit harder than I should, the engine will jerk. 23,000 miles after and I don't see any issues with my RAV4. The noise people complain about when accelerating is distance sound for me now. I've learned to drive and timed my acceleration as well on a rolling stop that will avoid the jerk movement. Buying another RAV in the near future for the wife. 65000 miles later and I still don't have any issues with my RAV 4.

So I bought my New Raf4 the car was nice in and out how ever I noticed the car not shifting gears properly with high RPM 6000 almost close to red lineing really scary ,I was driving like Grandma but it's a new car sometimes it needs time to break I thought, however 5 months in its seem to be getting worst doesn't matter what mode , frustrated with the car ! , I decided to go back to the dealership in Englewood Cliffs NJ ,to my surprise they they seem to understand this was a problem with that car these guys were the best they made a quick programming adjustment to the transmission a test drive and I was on my way happy as can be 😊 yes yes yes, lots of power and I'm driving like a champ love this car no more hisitations , wonder 🤔 why they never made adjustment in the factory, someone sleeping at the switch ! Great car ! Great out come .

Just bought one a few weeks ago and love it. The hybrid delivers on gas mileage, the interior is very comfortable, the ride is silky smooth and it is very quiet. I am reading the other reviews and questioning why the difference. We bought this car as a back up to a Prius with about 200,000 miles and no problems, just time to have a new car. I don't know about the gas models, but the XSE Hybrid is a real winner based on our experience.

Have a brand new Rav4 that has a definite hesitation when turning and merging into traffic from a side street. It doesn't do it all the time but when it does it seems dangerous. Only 250 miles on the vehicle and if it doesn't 'correct itself' it needs to go back to the dealer. Update: 6 month checkup at dealer. I was riding the brake pedal with left foot causing the hesitation. Also they put in a software update for the tranny and she drives alot better now!

2019 RAV4 XLE Premium: “Meh” and disappointing.

What can I say about my RAV4. Interior rattles started within weeks of ownership. Brakes started squeaking at 2000 mile mark, which dealer said was normal. Engine started making clicking noise around 5000 mile mark. After tearing the engine apart and driving a rental for two weeks, metal pieces were found in cylinders and in oil. Dealer replaced engine under warranty. And oh yeah the jerky transmission. Not very confidence inspiring. Just passed the 15000 mile mark and I’ve come to terms with the fact that the squeaks and rattles are just part of its character and charm. (If I don’t look at it that way it would drive me crazy.) I have had great luck with Toyotas in the past so I felt very confident in selecting them again. Maybe I just lucked out and got a defective unit but I’m a little soured on Toyota lately. Maybe my expectations of quality were too high. Don’t get me wrong I don’t hate it, just not super impressed with it. Here are some positives: It’s comfortable. Looks nice. Has a lot of good safety features. Heater and air conditioner work great. Lots of cargo space. Power rear hatch is nice. And now for a little more nitpicking. Controls for fan and vent positions for climate system are small and can be distracting to try to adjust while driving. Steering is really light and vague. Entune is a joke. Dated infotainment screen graphics. Android auto was not available for model year 2019 which is not a problem for me as I have IPhone but something to be aware of. Not deal breakers just personal dislikes. Oh and no remote start available. The dealer keeps telling me Toyota is going to make that available any day now but I’ll believe that when it actually happens. And did I mention the horribly jerky, transmission? It never knows what gear it wants to be in especially at lower speeds where it will surge and lag unexpectedly. At higher speeds it’s pretty smooth but in stop and go traffic it’s like driving a manual transmission with someone who doesn’t know how to smoothly use a clutch. So all in all would I recommend it? Probably not. At least not the 2019 model year. People say you should never buy a car the first year of a major revamp as there are a lot of kinks to work out. After reading reviews of 2020 model year I’m seeing much more favorable comments. So that’s all on me since I should have known better. Oh well live and learn I guess.

DO NOT PURCHASE 2019 Rav 4. I review all the comments before I purchased. In the beginning, they sounded great. SHORTLY AFTER purchasing transmission slips, jerks, jumps, etc. Almost in two accidents. Dealers just comments, it meets the regulations...then quickly said, we know there is something wrong, they will 'eventually" will find a 'fix' for it. How many people have to die before Toyota admits they have major issues. All sales should stop until this major flaw is correctly 100%! Lemon Law ??? Again, do not purchase this vehicle. Write letters to state and local representative, Toyota Headquarters and ALL local television station. This is that serious. PLEASE INVESTIGATION THOROUGHLY BEFORE EVEN CONSIDERING PURCHASE THIS VEHICLE.

I just purchased a used 2019 Rav4 LE. I needed a bigger car (was driving an accord coupe) and while I never thought I would want an SUV, I found myself wanting a car I could put my bike in and wanting to sit up higher. I really liked the new design of the Rav4, and having had a dependable toyota in the past, I decided I wanted to buy one. I did a lot of research on the car before doing so, so I knew what to expect. I think some of the common complaints I’ve seen (except the battery and gas tank issues) depend on the driver to some extent. There have been a lot of complaints about the transmission not being as smooth— I don’t have any trouble with this, but the car does jerk when my husband drives it. He has a heavier foot than I do. I’ve also had a Toyota in the past that behaved that way and I think it’s less of an issue on the Rav than it was on my old corolla. One of the other complaints was that it’s a bit cramped in the front—some people have felt like they’re right up in the dash. I am a smaller person so I actually like that feeling when I drive. For my husband, who is 6’3”, it’s a little tight but doable. He is more comfortable in the CRV. The car is a bit louder than my husband’s CRV but not enough to bother me personally. I like the way the car handles though I do find it’s ride a little less smooth than our CRV. Again, not enough to be an annoyance to me personally. If you’re looking for a more luxurious feel and the smoothest possible ride, the Rav4 might not be for you. I can admit the CRV is a nicer car, but I personally really like the my Rav. I love the new design and the interior is comfortable for me. The car drives just fine when I’m behind the wheel. Do your research, test drive well or even rent one first if you’re concerned. The car is not perfect and Toyota could definitely improve a few things if they wanted. But as for me, I like the car a lot. It suits my needs and wants well at this time.

Great car! I have for a week now. I love the exterior design with its rugged looks. I never liked any of the previous RAV 4 because I thought the designs were poor and dorky. But this 2019 RAV4 got my attention. I generally drive my XLE on eco mode but I switch to sport mode to get more power and speed up right away. The 203 HP are noticeable so be careful. My only complaint is that there is a lot of plastic inside, including floor mat. I guess Toyota recycled a lot of plastic for this. Also, I am annoyed that the radio does not have a scan mode; one must preset stations to enjoy the beautiful sounds. Overall, a great cra and I cannot wait until I play it around in the snow on SNOW MODE of course.

I only did research and test drive, I am not an owner. First, I was impressed with the brave redesign. It is a unique and clean layout. The interior and exterior of the Adventure model look great. It feels very comfortable. And it does not drive bad, it's just rugged and you can feel the road, the bumps, etc and the acceleration has more growl and less power than some people may be looking for. The problem is that the above comes at such a huge price tag. There are a ridiculous number of models and versions and options, and each item adds to the price. They even charge $400 if you want red, not joking. And of course, certain options are only available on certain models. For example, the panoramic sunroof and ventilated seats are only available as options on the top model period. Many configurations end up near the $40K mark, which is crazy for this SUV. If you fully load this RAV4, it is worth $30K max. The hybrid is a very nice option and the gas savings for the increased MPG will save roughly $4K-$5K over a typical 10 year ownership. But even with this, the price is far too high. The infotainment is a letdown as well. Rather than put maps and other things in the system, it mates with your phone with the installation of an app. This means that you need to use your data, have your phone programmed and available, and assumes there are no bugs and you are within cellular coverage. This is the opposite of well designed, high tech, and luxurous. The car screams clean slate, adventure, rugged, Forester style, etc which is nice...but it comes at the price of a luxury SUV which this just is not.

Don’t consider all those negative reviews!

2019 Toyota RAV4 Adventure 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl 8A)

To start with, I must admit that I’m dumbstruck by all the negative reviews on here. A lot of people seem to inadequately research and test their vehicles before buying. Minor niggles turn into 1-star reviews on here and “I’ll never buy Toyota again” threats. Isolated warranty claims yield bad reviews, also. I’ll start by saying that the transmission lurching problem has had a fix since August 2019. Since, my transmission has been near-flawless. It seems to be, along with the Adventure’s transfer case, the only widespread problem. For the latter, Toyota has gotten around to replacing them (they had exceptional delays for parts, in early-to-mid-2019). My Toyota dealership and Toyota at the corporate level have been fantastic. For those who are looking for a new RAV4, this means 2020 models don’t have these problems. The engine is a bit unrefined, granted, but it isn’t a deal-breaker (I had noticed before purchasing the vehicle that it was very loud while accelerating, but it’s one of the only foibles this car has, IMO). It also isn’t turbocharged like some rivals, so it’ll be more durable and less pricey to maintain. It’s more powerful than most, but if it’s too slow for some, there’s the Hybrid and Prime, although I’ve never yearned for more power and our other vehicle is quicker and more powerful. I must say that I’m impressed with Toyota’s new vehicle designs. The RAV4 Adventure is handsome, and my car’s two-tone Blue Flame on Ice Edge (white) roof turns heads. I thought I’d talk about the supposedly cheap-looking and feeling cabin. In the LE, it’s the case, but as you go up the ladder, material quality is better. It’s a solid, well-assembled cabin. I also like its “tough” look, and the orange elements in the Adventure trim. Adaptive Cruise Control and the other active safety features are amongst the best I’ve experienced. Sure, you can’t turn ACC into regular cruise control, but it’s the same with most car manufacturers. I only know of Volvo that gives the option. Lane-keeping and centering, when the lane marking are visible, works very well, too. I’ve only had to use automatic emergency braking once (thankfully), but it really works! I haven’t had problems with the infotainment system. It’s large and within easy reach. It works well, although it’s slightly slow. I’ve never had a problem connecting to Apple CarPlay (that I use most of the time). Overall, I love my RAV4 Adventure. It’s handsome and pleasant to drive, while being very spacious and comfortable, and has a well-laid-out interior. Fuel economy is competitive. It also should have an exceptional resale value and has respectable maintenance costs. Update (December 2020) : My opinion of this vehicle, that I’ve had nearly 2 years and 20 000 miles, hasn’t changed. I still appreciate it, and I haven’t had any other problems. 3 friends and family members now have a RAV4 in their driveway. It is still, in my opinion, one of the best vehicles in its segment, for the above reasons. For those that may be discouraged by all these reviews, keep in mind that this is the best-selling non-pickup in the country. Reliability-wise, the current-generation CR-V has fared far worse. It is currently subject to 2 lawsuits over serious defects. If, however, you don’t want a RAV4, I’d recommend the Kia Sportage. The current generation model is quieter inside the cabin, is well-built and has so far proven reliable. My mother and sister, that have a 2018 (with 40 000 miles) and a 2020 model (with 8 000 miles), respectively, have had no problems whatsoever. They’ve only had to go to the dealer for scheduled maintenance. I hope this will help you make a better-informed choice.

I have a high freq. hearing lost due to being around jet engines while in the AF. I bought the high end vehicle for the safety features. After I got home and checked out the parking aids and rear cross traffic, I found that I could not hear the chimes alerting me to a problem. Contacted toyota headquarters to ask if they could reprogram the computer so I could use these features. They answered no, no, what about helping us hard of hearing? I can hear the seat belt sounds and the lady in the nav. Unit my last vehicle I was able to hear these chimes. It seems that Toyota does not care made no attempt to help with this problem. I guess back to Kia where I can hear these safety features.

Toyota should be embarrassed. Edmunds.com should reconsider their review. I purchased the Rav4 without driving it on the highway. 1) It is so noisy you cannot communicate with others in this car. Motor noise during acceleration (as you enter the freeway) is excessive. It would be acceptable if this was diminished at freeway speeds but, this is not the case. It is really noisy on the road. 2) The lane center feature is unusable. It seems to be overly sensitive. And, the “lane keep” feature is unavailable unless the “lane center” feature is selected. I plan to trade this off, as soon as I am financially able. Update: I’ve had the car just over a year and have 10,000 miles on it. It is now a love / hate relationship. I still very much dislike the noise on the road. However, I really like the gas mileage on the highway. I am able to get 33 mpg on the highway. City driving is lower at approximately 22 mpg. Still looking for that perfect car ? ? So am I.

It's hard to believe it's been a year and a half since we've owned our 2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE and just as predicted it's been a great car. No issues, no warning lights, no funny noises, it's just Toyota reliable. I did mention about the jerky transmission a while ago that plagues the new gen RAV4s along with the current gen Camrys. However, I was able to schedule an appointment for a software update that's available for vehicles affected. It was well worth the hour and a half wait for it! It did wonders to our car! Now it shifts like it's supposed to. I got this done in July 2020 and hasn't let us down since. For anyone that hasn't gotten this done yet, do so soon!
