2016 Toyota Prius v Two 4dr Wagon (1.8L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

I love my Prius V! What other wagon would get you 43 mpg with this amount of cargo space. My family of four fit perfectly in it, that we rarely use or Sienna (which we also love). The car is slow, but that it is because I drive it slow. I am more aware of my driving and I would say that I'm a safer driver now. From a stop, I will accelerate quickly to the speed limit and then keep a light foot to keep the speed. I don't race to stop signs or red lights, I coast to them. In traffic, I don't accelerate fast to catch up to the person in front of me, but I slowly accelerate to them. When I put the car in cruise control at 70mph, it shows that I get 40+ mpg. It's like learning how to drive again. I'm a quarter way through my second tank of gas at mile 650. My first tank averaged 42 mpg, my current tank is averaging 46mpg. My brother has a 2006 Prius with 300k+ miles, so I hope this one will go beyond that.

My second Prius......very happy w/car...I knew it didn't have blinding acceleration before I bought it....lots of leg room. Would highly recommend window tint and getting a windshield eyebrow tint installed...sun beats in at eye level....just the right size for around town driving...no problem on freeway going 75-80

CONS: I reduced my rating on climate control. When cold weather came I tried to use heater. There is no switch for just the heater. Just A.C. You have to put on Auto and raise heat by temp control. The seat heater control is under the dash and you have to bend down to use losing sight of road. The seat heater control does not have an automatic turn off. The plug in for phones is next to heater control. Again this is under dash. Very hard to see and access. The car battery (not EV batteries) went bad and would not start. Found out hard way that to replace the battery with new one is very expensive (over $400.00). The battery is expensive as well as labor. Did you know the battery is NOT under the hood but under the back seat thus a lot of labor cost. The controls for safety are on the left side of dash and are too low. You cannot see them to operate them. They should be higher and more easily seen. The gas tank is small. Even though you get excellent mileage the tank is 12 gallons. PROS: Prius V-5 is an outstanding car with exceptions of above. It is too bad that Toyota decided to not build the Prius V anymore. I would have purchase another one. My wife drives a Lexus NX hybrid and likes my Prius more than her Lexus due to space, controls, height, cargo capacity, view of road. I wish Toyota would have kept the model and made it all electric or a pug in hybrid. The Prius V is a stationwagon frame and the cargo and space inside car is nothing less than outstanding. I get 45 mpg and can go 15 miles on battery alone. I wish the EV battery capacity was larger and distance on battery alone higher. You cannot buy this model anymore just the Pruis sedan. If you can find a used one don't think twice about the realiability and features of this well desgined hybrid SUV/Stationwagon. One thing I did not know and not listed as a feature. We have a double sun roof. It is really large and allows a view for both front and back passengers. It does not open though. I discovered if I park the car in the sun with the moon roof open when I return the moon roof shade is closed. I thought I had just forgot and closed it but I intentionally parked in the sun and then returned to find the sun shade closed on it's own. This is an excellent feature to keep car cool when parked in the sun (we live in Florida). Another feature I would like to see is passenger seat controls which are manual changed to electrical and add an up and down control as well as lumbar. Would really help with front seat passenger comfort. I would purchase the car again without hesitation. It has been the best car with best features for the best price. If Toyota would just change the above it would move from an excellent car to an outstanding car. The original tires (Toyo I believe) only lasted 26K. I replaced them with Uniroyal. I now have 42K on car and tread on Uniroyals is still very good. Was told by Toyo that they do not provide warranty original tires on my vehicle. Very troublesome that Toyota would put Toyo tires on Prius if they have no warranty. I am now going on my 8th year of ownership and still feel this is an outstanding car and would definetly recommend it to others. Just have to buy a used one.

Pinto Lover Moves On

Okay, so the Prius v reminds me of the new 1979 Pinto wagon my wife and I went on our honeymoon in. But only in the most basic ways. The color. When my friend started driving Priuses in '06 I made every kind of joke possible including one about buying two Corolas, one for Sunday - for the same money. So I coughed it up for a '16 model 2 and have been in hybrid bliss ever since. I traded a Honda Fit in. It was one of the last Japanese '13s available. I put 57,000 miles on it in two years. It was causing me pain. Not from a lack of reliability or the type of pain that sprouts from a hip pocket. It was cheap, very good and cheap. I was beginning to avoid driving because of the neck and shoulder pain it created. And fortunately for me I wasn't going to be driving as much. My new car rides smooth and the seat has allowed me to drive for up to six hours without my neck throbbing. Some critics complain about the lack of exceleration, but I have not felt underpowered even in heavy interstate traffic. The Prius is quite. Really quite, pedestrians are frequently surprised by it in parking lots. Oh, and the mpg, 45.8 in the first 2500 miles with the AC blasting away. Even though I got the lowest trim level, the Bluetooth works perfect, and the back up camera is great. All in all it is a well thought out design. The door openings are very wide making it easy for this senior citizen to access every area. I'm yet to lay the back seats down and actually haul something. The car is so nice I don't want it to be utilitarian. I had the windows tinted. 57 months later and it still feels tight like a much newer car than one that is a couple of hundred miles less than 90,000. I’ve kept the oil changed and replaced the tires twice. A road hazard destroyed two of the second set. I’ve never kept a car so long. I’m saving this one for my grandson, he is 7. Well, I intended to save for the kid, but the Toyota dealer offered me so much I traded it in on a hybrid Camry. We also traded in our Honda van. I was only driving 400 miles a month. Going to one car has allowed us to save a little more than $5,000 in 12 months. This money is going to take us back to France in 24. The Camry gets 56 mpg and doesn’t allow for me to bring more semi antiques home - more $$$. Going to one car has had me bumming a ride three times in a year. I loved my Prius and I love it’s sister the Camry. The Prius drew too much attention from poor whites. I had five instances of political harassment. We live near a community college. The Camry is plain white …. More, More August 5, 2017 On the first anniversary of my car's purchase I had clocked 22,000 miles. My wife and I visited Austin, the big antique shows at Round Top in late March, and Columbus, Ohio about a month later. The Prius is a fine auto to travel in. We can't get over how much space is inside. In my earlier post I mentioned that the I hadn't lowered the seats, well now a little of the new is worn off and it's being treated more like a wagon. I'm a younger retiree and I enjoy raising plants in containers. We also have a booth in an antique mall, so frequently the wagon hauls something besides groceries and grandchildren. My wife drives an Honda mini van and it sits at home as much as possible. I much prefer my Prius to her fine van, before you get to the gas mileage issue. I'm still averaging around 45 even with the iceberg of an air conditioner on full blast. I have breathing issues and the heat really knocks me out, sometimes I let it idle for 15 to 30 minutes and it doesn't seem to wreck the mileage. I've really enjoyed the free 2 year service Toyota provides. I plan on staying faithful to my dealer and even purchasing my tires from them. In the past I have tried to avoid the service department, I'm a terrible skeptic thst sold Lincolns in the early 1980's. I've seen some service departments that make a casino look like a consumer affairs counseling center. Over all I'm very, very, pleased and particular about this wonder wagon. It is my favorite car of a life filled with the new car smell. If I have to replace it, I would try to get the highest trim level so I could get the JBL radio. My only complaint is that the dash shows dust. 12,073 miles ... my wife has retired and I don't get to drive my car every day. She has an Odyssey mini van that gets a little more than half of the mpg I'm getting in the Prius. It's a very nice ride, but it's not a Prius. It feels big and bulky. It's hard to park, but it does seat eight. There have been no problems with my Prius, but I do take it in to the dealership for service. It's free for the first 24,000 miles. They even rotate the tires. I had a bit of a medical emergency that resulted in an ambulance ride. My young GP parked my Prius in a safe place. I was afraid to leave it the main parking lot overnight. I am a bit pocessive concerning the car. He asked me as I was being rolled along on the gurney, "Jack, does your car have a motor in it?" It was a great laugh at his expense. Today I'm going to remove my grandson's car seat and lay the back seats flat. Then the stereo will blast Joshua Bell's new Bach recording via Bluetooth from my phone, very loudly, on my way to pick up a 175 year old Sheraton chest my wife bought yesterday. I guess some of the new has worn away. Here's to old friends in the making. If there has been a failure in my long time relationship with Toyota it would be that I don't drive them long enough. 135,000 miles is the most I've ever put on one, I hope to top that this time. The Prius v continues to be my favorite car I recommend it highly.

Enjoying our new Prius V

We love it. Two notes: (1) Note that this is a station wagon and has a higher and somewhat more bulky profile than the traditional sleek Prius. However, it is quite roomy, and the cargo area will hold a lot of stuff and some big and bulky items. (2) If you have driven earlier small wagons (we have had a 1996 Corolla wagon and a 2000 Saturn LW wagon) you will find much more of a blind spot created on the passenger side by the rear hatch frame. The back panel windows (to the sides of the cargo area) are much smaller than the typical back panel windows on our earlier wagons. We need to compensate by paying greater attention to the passenger side mirror in order to see that blind spot. That said, we are really enjoying our first Prius. We are learning from the instrumentation how to drive more economically. On very short trips, under 2 miles, you do not reach the 40+mpg range. However, if you go 10 miles, whether in suburban traffic with lights or on the open road you get 40 and better. We love the cup and bottle holders. There are a total of 9 places to put your drinks, four molded into the storage pockets on each door, three more in front and two more in back. The price of $26,759 was the dealer price before adding sales tax. Update, August 2017 after a full year: Without actually running the numbers, I have the impression that gas mileage improved overall about 6 months into the car's life. That said, the car seems to fudge the MPG a bit. I reset the trip meter every time I fill it with gas. (Not often, a tank gets 400+ miles.) The meter tells you the miles per gallon as well as the number of miles since it was last reset. When I divide out the mileage by the actual number from the gas pump, the MPG is usually about 2-3 miles less than what the car says it should be. However, no complaints. I regularly get over 40 MPG. One alert: This wagon model (Prius V) does not get the very wonderful mileage of the main Prius model which is rated at about 55 MPG. Therefore it does not qualify for certain low energy vehicle discounts, such as on the George Washington Bridge that the main Prius model gets. Update, August 2018 after two years: We still love this car and we took it for a 2500 mile round trip through the mid-west this summer. We had been complaining to ourselves that there was no dome light over the cargo compartment to light that area when the rear hatch is open. After about 21 months I noticed a clear plastic rectangle on the left wall of the cargo compartment. This rectangle had a switch next to it and when we moved the switch we discovered that this is the cargo light. That was a happy discovery, but a dome light would have been better since this one can be obstructed by cargo on that side. Also the storage compartments under the cargo area floor but above the spare tire are very handy.

The gas mileage is as good as claimed: 44 city 50 highway (as long as you don't go above 65 to 70). Take the Edmunds print out with you to the dealership. We did that and used it to negotiate an extra almost $1,000 off the price of the car.

Of course my preference would have been the Audi but that was 80K. This is my third Prius. Got the V as it is a bit larger than the regular Prius - I see it is referred to as a wagon but I would have never thought to call it that. There is a definite interior redesign - the central console is going which is kind of nice actually and the interior panels are redesigned. Seems much more higher end - whereas the others were not - but also test drove the Lexus Sedan - the i - and I just am a good fit with Prius - I like the way they handle and particularly like the interior of this new one - in fact better than the Lexus I test drove - very space ship looking. The V is much larger inside and I like that but as a family of one, I really didn't need it but it will be a nice plus to have. The pick up is much better in this one and the redesign on the hatchback - for my test - has a much much better rear view mirror. Really love this car but it's day one. Let's see how the next six months go.

Smooth ride. Screens encourage me to drive less aggressively as I see how my old habits were jerky and inefficient (or maybe I'm just getting mellower with age). Incredibly quiet inside and out. Only quibble is the navigation screen is too small. But I love this car.

When I was 18 my favorite car was a new SS 396 Chevelle. Now that I'm 66 THIS is my favorite. Model 5 is pricey but I wanted the safety features and panoramic roof, not so much the Entune App Suite. The Prius V interior is a high step up from the basic Prius and not offensive to my passengers who own a luxury vehicle. During the positive test drive I took a model 3 over well known hazardous streets with stop and go driving. It never occurred to me to turn on the sound system until I was driving my own purchase home a week later, no complaints. I too didn't feel competent with the rear camera until I had a trusting friend stand behind the car. I stopped and parked once the red line was on top of her feet. The owner's manual states the red line is 1.5 ft. but seeing is believing. MPG increases to high 40s with mixed driving using premium grade gas, non-aggressive driving in ECO mode and no AC. The dash indicator for MPG is about 1-2 mi. higher than actual arithmetic at the pump. Comes with several detailed easy to understand manuals. No experience with ice/snow/mud. Got Toyota mud guards and after market floor liners; also dealer door edge guards and rear bumper applique, no complaints. Use padding in the cargo area, hard surfaces like seat backs scratch easily. Would like the telescoping steering wheel to extend further; good for small drivers. Tall passengers make positive comments about height and leg room, especially while using the sliding and reclining back seat. No extra-large passenger yet. Trade in and cash rebate helped; sales tax and admin fees didn't. Update: 9345 miles. Average mixed mileage 37, less than advertised. Dash MPG indicator is consistently 2-3 miles higher than true, which I reported to Service Department on both scheduled visits; no one seemed to care. I stopped using premium gas after reliable publications said to stop wasting money at the pump. Could this be why MPG gas dropped? Instead, I often use top-tier regular fuel. Exterior paint is vulnerable to road debris. No regrets after 14 mo. of ownership. The silver color is still my favorite. Update: 18806 miles. MPG 33-39. I purchased Toyota Care after the original expired. No unplanned service visits. No problems with navigation, audio, or safety features. Body & interior remain in new-condition. Tires wear well and do well in 4-5 inch snow and sleet-ice mix. I haul bagged garden soil & sand, shrubs, pavers, & recently a boxed 36x80 storm door. Toyota USA stopped Prius v with the 2017 model due to sales (4-5K 2015), still sold Internationally. This model is silver with 2-tone gray interior and still receives compliments from random people. I would buy this car again.

Prius Cabin Noise

Bought a 2016 Prius V to travel around the US after I retire this year. Have been very satisfied with the fuel economy, but very disappointed in the road/wind noise in the vehicle at highway speeds. I find this annoying, loud noise, unacceptable, to try to drive 20 k miles around the country. As it is, I would need ear protection to drive this 4, 5 or 6 hours a day on the highways. Not a good idea when traveling with your wife. I will attempt to install sound deadening mats or fabric to see if this will help to reduce cabin noise, but, the noise seems to come from the windows. Not sure if mats will help. Also looking at other hybrids to trade up to. Too bad. Excellent mileage, but wicked bad cabin noise. Toyota should have put more effort in sound control in this cab when they retooled the model in 2016. Traded for a 2020 Camry Hybrid. Much better.

I love this car! It is so comfortable and has almost everything going for it. I love the general comfort, the feel of the car when driving, the super adjustments of the front seat and the technology. The adaptive cruise control was definitely worth the extra money for the top model. I wish there was back vents for the air conditioning. I have had my car for almost three years now and I still love it. I feel like my body fits into it comfortably and gets me to an appropriate height to see out the front well. The front drivers seat adjusts up and down which is great. The visibility out the sides is much better than my old standard Prius. I have not had any problems with it and besides general maintenance I have only needed to replace tires this year.

After 3 years it's safe to say I will not buy a Toyota again. Paint chips and scratches with as little as a fingernail -(confimed paint defect) random loud clacking noise upon starting ("nothing wrong" according to dealership) trim coming off after first year- cheap flimsy exterior and I'm now questioning the safety and reliability. Will buy a Subaru when they go electric for next car

in 3 months went to fix 2 times, don't start, the towing guy show me receipts for 7 prius daily, very bad sign, never go to west kendall toyota, very bad customer service, got my new plate after 7 days the temporary expire, fast service department but don't know what happen with my prius v 4,they only have 1 master technician for prius to resolve starting problems and reset software and he is on vacations, keep driving but scare about reliability, good on gas, smooth ride but paying $37.560 for a prius???? its ridiculous, same price that any lexus,no government incentives, just for all electric cars or plug-in,after my last visit now my car don't recognize the key, need to press to open doors and use the key just in front of the start bottom to start the car, even doing that, some times don't start,is amazing, don't recommend to buy a prius, price to high,if you use your car for daily commute you will get your money back on saving gas in 10 years, time to change the car,I driving with Uber and Lyft and only one thing is great ""45 mpg" combined, that's it. still very angry with west Kendall Toyota, horrible customer service,I already trade in my Prius for a Honda pilot,I waited for a GAP,Service contract and Tire hazard cancellation refund for more than 6 month, never go with that dealer again. the Prius V was always broke,my opinion is the same, best thing is 45 mpg, that's it,to much electronic and computers failing. the resale value is horrible, still having 12,000 dollars upside down, the unique toyota that loose value daily. years after I had my prius v 5,my opinion still the same about dealer customer service but the quality of prius v is better now,the future is electric cars but the mile range is to low if you drive uber or lyft,so the hybrid cars will be the best option for ever.

I really wanted a sunroof. To get one you had to buy the 5 with the advanced tech package putting the price in a range I found ridiculous. Thus I am still shopping. I do wish Toyota would make it easier to select the options you want because I did like the test drive and in many ways the Prius V would be a good car for me.

I love my Prius. At almost 90k miles, I had to do minimal maintenance. Roomy trunk for Costco runs and back seats fold down for extra space. Getting about 44MPG average, which is great. The only thing I would change are the seats as I wish they say lower to the ground.
