Great car only if you can get the fuel

I've had the car since Dec 2018. I like the car itself a lot. I enjoy the boost it offers at traffic stops, (not as good as Tesla if you are wondering, but good enough to beat most non-sports Gas cars). I enjoy the features which usually are only offered in premium trim, such as adaptive cruising, heated front AND back seats) I also definitely enjoy the free fuel I'm getting which is clean for the environment. You shouldn't buy the car as it depreciates from the listing price of 50+K to about 11K in 3 years, which I only paid around 15K for. But I didn't have to pay any additional cost for fuel or maintenance. The clean energy rebate covered my down payment. For that kind of monthly repayment, it's hard to get a car with all the nice features offered by this one. Now to the Cons. First of all, Toyota has some weird obsession with their own smartphone integration, they simply won't support Android Auto. I think this is finally fixed in their 2022 models, but their navigation system is on Mirai. I had to use my phone for navigation. That's about the only complaint I have for the car itself. Now the worst part of being a Mirai owner is how much time and effort you waste on getting the fuel. There's a few problems for this. 1. The supply chain of Hydrogen is super unreliable. Early 2019 there was an explosion at local refinery and damaged the hydrogen delivery truck fleet, we had sustained hydrogen shortage for about 3-6 months. And we had another shortage in the Bay area in Aug/Sep 2021. 2. The stations itself is super unreliable. You may see a station has fuel, and by the time it's your turn, the station would shut itself down for a good 10-15 minutes. Every refill takes an hour even if there's only 2-3 cars in front of you. And there's the risk of not getting any. Sometimes, even if the station is working, you may only be able to get half tank. I did some research online and understood that the stations usually have a main tank and an intermediate tank. The hydrogen is pumped into your car from the intermediate one, which also needs time to refill from the main tank. This works fine if there's only one or two cars at a time, but when there are 20 cars lining to get filled, the intermediate tank would lose it's pressure and can't put anything into your car. Refilling the intermediate tank takes 30-40 minutes. This means everyone have to refill more often, which means more traffic at the station, and longer queues each time you go. I've seen multiple Mirai parked at the hydrogen station as they probably don't have enough to make a round trip. Around Aug 2021, most of the stations near my home is offline, the supply chain had another shortage so about one station is getting one to two refills a week. I once went to a station at midnight, and there were still about a dozen Mirai waiting in the queue. For three days in a row, I go to the station, wait for an hour, then the station is shutdown. It was really frustrating. So that's my experience with Mirai. If their supply chain of Hydrogen can be more reliable, if they can fix the station technology so it doesn't have to wait 10 mins between refills and always fill up to full tank, then it's a really nice car to lease. Otherwise you'd be very likely to spend your Friday nights contemplating your life choices at a hydrogen station (wish I could attach a photo here).

High Price for no infrastructure or support

When I bought this car the dealer showed me a bunch of stuff comparing the predicted resale value against other green tech. This car costs $60K, 2.5 years later it is worth less than $10K. Fuel costs have gone up and there is even less of it available. Despite the ridiculously high fuel costs Toyota offers no continued support and you will have no way out because the high price tag and plummeting value mean that you are stuck. Don't buy this car until the infrastructure develops another 5-10 years. Update 2/7/22 - Ended up paying the difference to get out from under the car. Rating is the same.

It is absolutely horrible to keep fuel in this car. If you like 5 to 10 car lines to get fuel, the get one. They advertise 310 miles per tank, but I get more like 210 miles per tank. The stations are often out of fuel or broken. 3 weekends in a row last summer 2/3 to 3/4 of the stations were out of fuel. There were long lines at the few stations with fuel. Up to 10 cars in line to get fuel. The system that tells you which stations have fuel is UNRELIABLE. There have been over a dozen times in the last 6 months where the system said there was fuel and I could not get fuel from the pump. I have called the fuel company and been told that a station was online while I was standing at the pump and could NOT GET FUEL FROM THAT STATION. It keeps getting worse as they add more cars to the road and add only minimal extra capacity. I have asked if I can return the car because it has gotten so bad, but Toyota has refused to do anything. I am VERY UNHAPPY!!!!! Now they are selling the used Mirai's that came off of leases. You get 3 years of free fuel, but after the 3 years, the cost of fuel is outrageous. Current it's $70 for about 210 miles and the fuel price keeps going up.

Great Car and Fun to Drive

I have been driving 2017 Model for a week. It looks great. It is fun to drive and good MPG between 50 to 70 miles per 1KG of hydrogen. On the downside, hydrogen stations are still limited and only available in California. Hydrogen is also expensive though Toyota offers free hydrogen for three years. So, the only option is lease.

The worst mistake that I have ever done. Very stressful. Imagine you are stuck in LA fwys with low hydrogen and all stations around you are RED ! We end up buying a used Ford Fusion since the Mirai been sitting over 10 days with no HYDROGEN Even the Torrance Shell which is a pipeline is off line. Many times we had to wait until the pump BUILDUP PRESSURE watching the timer counts then the joy of refueling to find out the pump stopped at one kilo only. What a bummer
