Turbo engine class action suit for safety
We purchased the 23 highlander in February. It was our first Toyota and our last. The turbo 4 cyclinder is full of issues. The car randomly can’t generate power to take off or turn into traffic. It also looses power on acceleration and bucks and surges like the engine is missing. The no power on take off issue has caused several near misses while trying to turn across traffic. There are tons of complaints in NHTSA and other Toyota based sites about this issue. I have had car in 6 times and can’t fix it. I have lost money, time and value in this car as I can’t even trade it in due to dealers telling me they don’t want it. Aside from that the car is cheaply made. The doors are thin and have no sound insulation. The seats are stiff and uncomfortable. It works for about 30 minutes but then you want out. The third row is useless. You can’t get into or out of it and everyone from front to back has to have their legs squashed to just make it usable. The remote start that you pay for in the package comes with a hefty $8 a month subscription price. So once your trial is over it will cost you to use the equipment you purchased even with your key fob. The plastic inerriror is cheap and thin and scratches easily leaving white plastic scratch marks just from glancing it with a ring or keys. It reminds me of an 80s Chevy cavaliers plastic that was soft and weak. I have desperately tried to find something in this car I liked but nothing comes to mind. It’s cheap unreliable junk. Shame on you Toyota.

Bad car
I always thought that Toyotas are good cars. Not anymore. 1. Rattles everywhere. From dash, from door, from the back. 2. Very noisy, on any road worse than perfect, noise from the road. On speed over 60 constant wind noise ( this I could not catch during test drive, as in traffic couldn’t drive more than 50). 3. On sunny days digital panel washes out- when i was testing car was cloudy:( One year update: all negatives remained of course, however, roomy car, pretty economical- 27-28 mpg on freeway, made couple long trips, basically for 50 grand it is worth it. No reason to pay more for fancy cars

Bye-Bye
Where do I start. We owned an older Toyota Highlander Hybrid 2013 and loved it so we purchased a new 2023. Big mistake. Toyota has gotten cheap in their builds insofar as the interior is stiff and uncomfortable. SoftTex material used on seats slippery and cheap, plastic plastic everywhere, acres of dash and monitor Apple Car Play that obstruct your view if you are shorter in stature, I am female and 5'5" so traveling as a passenger is the worst as I cannot even see the hood with seat raised to the max, the third row seat is worthless and a safety hazard if you were to rear ended no way could you get out, would not recommend putting a child in the third row seating. Toyota for whatever reason did away with a pretty decent infotainment with GPS Nav system in 2020, 2019 was the last year, now they have given us an Apple Car Play which essentially a 8" monitor for your Iphone with no Nav...If you do not have a Smart Phone, you have an Am/FM manual radio..But here is the reason I do not like Apple Car Play...It drains my Iphone battery and shuts off and no more Apple Car Play so I am regulated to use the USB connection and charging cable, it does have wireless charging pad, Rav 4 does not, however my Iphone is not a newer phone so that doesn't work..Too many secrets to learn and operate system..If you have music saved on a thumb drive, it puts in separate folders that you need to look for while stopped as well as puts the music in order by dates..MPG is ok if you are satisfied with combined 26-27...Basically, the Toyota Highlander is not worth the money as the frustration level is too high and as soon as we get title it is going bye-bye at a loss.....
Great ride but problems are causing issues.
Love Toyota, was excited to get this at a decent price, but something told me to lease, glad I did instead of buying. Black on black with red interior and 12 inch screen. Rides great, room and has some power. The electronics are less then to be desired. I constantly get disconnected from the car, I get a loud sharp sound coming from the speakers that actually hurt my ears. Had to shut off car for it to stop. The other day I tried to start the car and it went haywire. Left me stranded. Not happy because of this, not sure if the software is junk but it really takes away from what the Highlander could be.

Get the hybrid powertrain
This SUV is very good in terms of room, comfort and features for the price. But the 2.4T engine is a real letdown. It is very noisy and buzzy even under moderate acceleration. And the car feels slower than with the previous V6 model, which I have driven as a rental. Worst of all, the turbo four runs terribly with regular gas (87), even though the manual says that's all it needs. There is a 1-second turbo lag off the line and then it surges forward. In traffic, the car hesitates and bucks, making it very fatiguing to drive. Switching to premium gas (91+) makes it run A LOT better, but it also costs a lot more to fill up. Even with premium gas, mileage is not any better than that of the previous V6. And the tank is the size of a sedan's (like 15g), so you will be filling up all the time. The new infotainment system has a large screen and the wireless Apple CarPlay works well. But the built-in navigation's graphics are too muted in color to be useful in daytime. The individual driver profiles are supposed to load based on the driver's phone, but it has never loaded correctly and requires manual intervention every time. They are more hassle than their worth. I just stick with Apple CarPlay all the time. The wireless charger doesn't work consistently, unless your phone has no case on. If you want this SUV, buy the hybrid version. It comes with an annoying CVT, but at least it will drive more smoothly in traffic.
