BEFORE YOU PURCHASE ANY TOYOTA....READ THIS
We have been a loyal Toyota customer for 15 years for their superb quality and low annual maintenance cost, however, that all changed today. Apparently Toyota has moved to an annual fee based system for remote start. We spent over $50,000 for our new Highlander Hybrid and found out after we had the car for 2 weeks that remote start was included, only if you pay an $80.00 annual subscription. Ironically, we also have a 2016 Highlander Hybrid and its remote start does not require an annual fee. The only difference is a software change that they now want you to pay a yearly subscription for. Lia Toyota, our dealer, was willing to work with us as much as they could, however, Toyota corporate was very arrogant when I called. The dealership even said that the owner of the dealership called corporate and they were arrogant about this with him as well. Logically, it is cheaper to purchase an outside remote start system than to pay their annual fee if you plan on keeping the car longer than the remote start system cost amortized. Please note: It is not the $80.00 per year, it is the point that Toyota is moving to an annual subscription model to increase their profit margins because they are not making ENOUGH money from their $50,000+ vehicle. Had we known it at the time, we would not have traded in our debt free 2016 RAV4 and purchased this vehicle.
Just a test drive
Test drove this vehicle looking for an option with better mileage than a standard mid size SUV. Current SUV a 2017 Traverse. Acceleration was better than what I expected but the engine noise was very obtrusive. Wind noise from the drivers mirror was terrible. CVT was very smooth and the seats were pretty decent. Acceleration is very loud as the engine really struggles. passing power from 60-80 is impressive for a 4 banger. If mileage is your game this may be a great vehicle but clearly not as refined as gas engines.

Terrible gas mileage
I just purchased a 2021 Highlander AWD Platinum Hybrid. I am very easy on the gas pedal. I purposely bought this vehicle for the MPG rating it had. I just did my first fill up. 20 MPG. Needles to say I will be going back to the dealer service department to see what they say. I hope I didn't just blow $51,000.

Almost as good as it gets
I have a 2021 Highlander AWD platinum , I like everything about it except it does not have automatic folding mirrors, not a deal breaker but has so many other luxuries. I do not know why Edmunds always rates them below Kia, must be on their payroll is all I can think of. I was looking for my last car and wanted something with all the bells and whistles and would easily go 250,000 miles or more pretty much trouble free. I average about 34-36 miles per gallon depending on type of driving and use of air conditioner. I have had for two years and so far it has not disappointed.

Meets/Exceeds advertised MPG
Nice ride. The fuel economy has been great. Exceeding the advertised MPG. Enjoy the features of the Platinum model. Looking to buy a new one.
