Goldielocks Rocks
I have had my 1998 Corolla for 5 years. Goldielocks is as reliable as the sunrise. I drive her hard daily as an airbag recall specialist here in Miami Florida. I use her to recall defective new cars. Sometimes she stays on for 8 hours a day idling in the 100 degree weather with the AC blasting. The original radio sounds great and I use a cassette adapter for Sirius XM. The goldish pink paint attracts the right people and when I (rarely) valet park her they generally put her up front with the rental Lambos because she is so beautiful! Her velvety seats are comfy after 12 hour long trips and she gets great gas mileage- about 380 miles per 10 gallon tank. I will not sell her ever. I have owned over 50 cars in my life and Goldie is the most dependable vehicle I have ever enjoyed. These 98 Corollas are very special. If you need a strong car then get one. This car performs well in monsoon rain storms, at 85 mph on the highway and dodging rental Lambos on South Beach. Oh what a feeling to have a free no payment no maintenance car!!

Ruby the Road Warrior
I obtained the car with 115K miles. It had been passed around by my ex-laws, and I got it for my step-daughter to use at college. It hadn't been maintained very well, so good thing it is so durable. I have 188K miles on it now. When I got it I had to put front brakes, tires, and battery on it. Both interior door handles have been replaced. Replaced bulb for interior dome light. Step-daughter drove it into ditch and had to replace front struts and alignment. Really didn't do anything except put gas in it and change oil for almost 50K miles. Power steering hose broke and serpentine belt broke and were repaired very cheaply as were all the prior listed repairs. Headliner is coming down and some rust around rear wheel wells. Prior owner had poor maroon paint job on it, so it is fading and chipping badly. Headlights also suffering typical fading. All power items, windows, ac, dash, and radio/casssette work. Great gas mileage, can get almost 40 when not using ac on highway. The 1.8 engine might be the best 4 cylinder ever made. Toyota still uses it

Mine may have been a lemon
My Corolla had the 4 speed automatic transmission. I personally had a bad experience with my Corolla. I had the power steering leak and I had to get a new gas tank all within weeks of buying the car. My gas gauge was floaty, and mpg was lower than what websites listed. It never left me stranded, but having to put all that money into it really made me have a negative outlook on the car. The car was totaled in May of 2015, and I now have an Avalon. My advice is that if you do find one of these for sale, make sure it has been well maintained.

My Corolla is still going strong...
Bought an LE (Touring) in 1998. 30 seconds out of the showroom, it started making this HORRIBLE grinding noise. Dealer fixed it under warranty (a loose lug nut in the front aluminum alloy wheels), but entire new car experience was compromised. Then, for the first 20k miles, the car made a squeaky old mattress noise -- turned out the Goodyear Integrity tires had uneven wear. Goodyear disagreed, so did the Berkeley, CA dealership. Bought tires (Pirellis) out of own pocket. Noise went away for a bit, but came back at 40k. Bought new Yokohamas, and has been perfect since. Back seat had enough barely enough leg room - - it is a total joke. Auto. tansmission pickup is pathetic. Still LOVE IT!!
