Slow & sluggish

I thought 220hp meant a little performance. Honestly, my 150hp Pontiac had better acceleration & performance than this thing. It is slow, sluggish, hesitates with acceleration, downshifts when I don't want it too, and jerks like a kid learning a stick shift (it's an automatic) at slow speeds. The dealership tells me there is nothing they can do about it, that it is the "drive by wire" throttle system. Well, I HATE it. I would like to be able to accelerate into traffic without worrying about getting hit by oncoming traffic because my car didn't respond when I hit the gas. The dealer promised me that I would "LOVE" my Toyota, but I'm ready to trade it in with less than 5k miles on it!

So far there are not too many of these on the road, I see more Lexus SC. I love the styling, ride, and the quite, even with the top down. I had a old Mercedes SL and I am so happy to be rid of it. My ratings #'s aren't as high as most because nothing is perfect, but this is close. First, it is not a high performance car, it just looks like one. I love the shiftable transmission. Mileage is good, handling is good, but not great. I live in the mountains, so I notice that. Same with the accelleration. JBL soundsytem is very good, even with the top down. Cons, have been covered. Poor rear visability, useless rear boot, and rear access.

Car pulls to the left despite rotations and alignment. The 2.4L 4 coupled to 4spd automatic often is unsatisfactory when trying to get to speed from low speed cruising. Engine warning lights go on for no reason and stay on. This does not equate to lengendary Toyota quality. Standard radio and CD are garbage Seat is too high for over 6 foot male. Ride can be a tad harsh. Not a car I'd recommend at the price. Breaks are average and often grab when car is cold.

I would say except for the boot that covers the top when it's down, the 2004 Solara convertible gives you about as much bang for the buck as anything out there. Lots of pep and a great ride. Nice sound system. Not the best but more than adequate. Would we buy it all over again? You bet.

Used to drive the Volvo C70 and love the extra room in the trunk and back seat of the Solara. The few little "extras" you get with Volvo aren't worth the additional $10,000 or the loss of extra space.

Really, what competition is there to the Solara convertible? The Chrysler Sebring is a quality joke, and actually costs more similarly equipped. The Ford Mustang is old technology, at least until the 2005's are available. (Then try to buy one for six months.) The Turbo Beetle costs two thousand dollars less, but it is definitely not in the same class. The Solara offers Toyota quality, 7 second to 60 mph performance and luxurious accomodations. This truly is a great buy.

I gave up a mercedes 500 SL for this car and I am happy I did. I looked at every convertable on the market. I had decided on Lexus sc430 till I test drove it for a day. The Solara has the appearance of the Lexus with twice the room and half the price. This is a fun car that combines the function of a practical car with the the thrill of driving a sporty eye catching car.

1 of 1 people found this review helpful

Great convertible for the money compared to Chrysler or Ford. Much more for your money than $15,000 extra would cost for BMW or others. If interested in the XM satellite radio, negotiate the price up front since it will cost you over $700 to make the factory unit work after the fact in the SLE model. I was told I could take the vehicle to Best Buy to have the necessary equipment installed to make the "XM Ready" stereo work. Not true. You must install Toyota parts to make the head unit work as designed unless you want to add another head unit. Most Toyota dealers do not understand or have experience with XM radio.

I have had a significant number of problems with my Solara (none involving the engine, thankfully), including significant rattling in the dashboard (6 repairs, and counting), rattling/loose passenger window, whistling of the door seals at highway speeds, defective tire pressure indicator, defective rocker (retracting) mechanism in sunroof, defective driving lights, etc. Very shocking, given Toyota's reputation for reliability.

Seems some Solara's have a problem. 1. on some, the tire pressure light won't go off, and the service depts don't know how to fix it. On some, the car pulls to the left, and even after 3 alignments, they can't fix it. And on some, the dashboard rattles after a few hundred miles. I got all 3 problems, and am waiting for arbitration to get my money back! :(

This is my second Solara, and I love it. I bought the first model when it came out in 1999. I got an SLE with a V6. I loved that car, but the SE v4 is just as nice. The look, feel, comfort and the driver are excellent. The pickup is surprisingly quick too; even when I when I was driving up a mountain.

I've owned my Solara for 4+ years now and I have nothing but positive words for this car. I currently have around 165K on the car, primarily highway miles and it still runs as soft, smooth and quietly as it did the first day I purchased it. I'm amazed at what Toyota has done with this machine. I've only had minor repair issues in the past mainly due to my excessive driving. Only had to replace driver side window regulator because it was broken into and regulator was damaged. And I have an AC leak which I hope won't be too much of a repair before this summer hits.

The car has been to the shop 23 times in the last 4 years. There was a short in the electrical system in the first month that Toyota didn't find that caused many other problems. Worst Dealer ever, worst car ever. The car understeers heavily, too little grip for fun handling, I average 23 mpg. I bought this because I thought the Passat was unreliable. I will be trading this piece of crap in for a Saab this week. VW and Toyota need to be taught what customer service is.

I purchased one in the artic frost pearl white, very nice looking car. I took it home 80 miles from the dealership. There was excessive wind noise from the drivers side top and about half way home the check engine light came on. The car had 5 miles on it when I took it. I called the dealership and the following day I had to bring it back. They ran the diagnostic and discovered a problem with the engine, transmission and two other things. The noise from the top was because of a defect in the top designed that Toyota was already aware of but decided to put it out anywa

This is absolutely the worse car mfr. It hesitates like crazy at low speeds and mis-shifts. It has been doing it from day one. After many times back to the dealer for this problem all they have to say is that the computer has no codes. We can't fix a problem without a code registering. I was told call Toyota directly and register a complaint with area rep. Which also turns out to be a complete waste of time.

1.NO TAPE DECK! Tape deck removed and replaced with useless map guide. 2. Passenger front seat is not electric. 3. Neither trunk nor passenger door can be opened with a KEY. Can only be opened from INSIDE the car. 4. Huge pillowed blocks bar rear-view visibility. Even with cushions removed, rear bar hinders visibility. 5. Only one electronic key given at purchase. 6. Coffee holders not firm and secure. Coffee always spills over. 7. Clock not brightly back-lit and poorly placed. You can't read the time from the driver's seat. 8. Virtually no room between front and back seats, which make the back seat useless. 9. CD only plays one CD at a time.

Just came out of a Lexus IS300. I was thinking of getting the Honda Accord coupe until I saw a picture of the Solara in a car magazine. When I saw it in person, I just had to get one, especially in the amazing red color! It looks like the SC430 from the back but is much more roomy and a lot less expensive. I think that it is the most comfortable car I've ever had. I love it!

Learning that the new Solara was a new model and built in America kind of worried me.I said to myself what could go wrong? It's a Toyota and it's new. I bought mine at Toyota North Hollywood and after 400 miles on it, there was a problem with the car's allignment.I took it back to the dealer and it took them the whole day to find out that it's "toe" went out.Whatever that means.I had to take it back next day early in the morning to have them disassembled the car and fix whatever the problem they stated. The service manager even stated that it's a first year model and one should expect problems.

This is a true drivers car, the second you sit down, you feel right at home, everything is where it should be and the seats are comfortable. The car handles smoothly and there is a bit of understeer, which is a good thing in a front wheel drive car. A interesting character of the car is the size, it is considerd a midsize coupe, and feels just like one. I give the car almost a 10/10 in every catagory, please do yourself a favor and seriosly suggest getting one. P.S. Please E-Mail me if you have any questoins.

I've been researching a new car for about 6 months now, and finally decided it was time to migrate out of my 2000 Toyota Celica GT-S to something a bit more easy on the bones for long distance trips. I thought I was going to have to compromise my love of coupes and go to 4dr sedan to get this, but fortunately the restyled Solara caught my attention while waiting at the dealership for an oilchange. If your looking for a comfortable coupe that plays to your desires for luxury appointments at a reasonable price, the Solara might be for you. I enjoy the ride quality better than my mom's 2003 Honda Accord EX.

I bought this new in 2004. It's reliable and I've never had any major problems with it, except cosmetically. The paint scratches very easily and the interior plastic panels came loose multiple times and I had to take it to several dealers before they fixed it for good. I wish for the money the car had a more quality interior. Mileage is excellent. The tire pressure monitor is way too sensitive and I wish it told you the pressure- sometimes it goes off it there is too much air in the tire, but you have to check the tires BEFORE adding air for this reason. The snow guard or whatever under the car came loose a few times when other people drove my car and the driver seat can come loose.

The relationship between the Camry and the Solara is a lot like the whole Clark Kent/Superman setup. For example, no one would suspect that the mild-mannered Camry sedan (a splendid example of automotive perfection in its own right) and the Solara, with its slick styling, beefy V6, and road-hugging 17 inchers, are one and the same. The truth is that this is about as close to a Lexus as you can get without actually getting one. Interior materials are of the highest quality, and for a Toyota, that's REALLY saying something.

I bought my 2004 Solara SE Sport in Septemeber, right after they went on sale. It is the only version offered with its unique suspension, 17" wheels, and body kit. It has been an enjoyable car thus far. Many people have commented on how nice it looks. It is a lot different than the previous model, as I have a family mamber that has a 2002 model. So far with the V6 engine, I have consistently gotten 25 mpg, which is excellent for a car like this. I strongly recommend it to others, as it is well-built, and a pleasuable car to own.

No granted, I have only had this car for three days, but I just love it. Many areas of this car have the quality look and feel of the more expensive Lexus SC cars. The interior design well thought out and built, but it was the handling on the test drive that sold me on this baby. We took this car out on a slightly pitted back road and let it open. The suspension was fantastic and when taking tight turns at high speeds we experienced very little roll. This car hugs the road very well and the automanual shifting makes it very fun to drive. It is by no means a sport coupe, but is far more sporty than the Camry or old Solaras.

I optioned out for the SLE V-6 to get my full money's worth and boy did I get it. You get the triptronic gear box and this makes the car even more exciting. When I was test driving the car, I turned off the radio and the air conditioner just so I could hear if there was any noise coming from the engine, road, wind, etc. and I could barely hear any noise! Visibility is outstanding at night and in the day (having fog lights standard on a car are a must!). All-in-all this car delivers dependable quality along with the luxury of a Lexus all for the price of a Toyota (cheaper than a Honda Accord coupe with same features).

The Solara was a compromise between the V6 Accord, the Passat and the V6 Camry SE. The Solara seats (leather with lumbar support) were some of the most comfortable seats I have ever sat in. The engine feels pretty strong and is very smooth. The interior is very elegant, except for the cheesy fake wood accents. Otherwise, great ride, good power, distinctive styling (though from some angles it looks bulbous), 2.9 % financing for 60 months. There is a slight pull to the left. I have heard from message boards that this is common with this car.

I had the '02. It's a joke in comparison to the '04. Totally different cars. This time I got the whole package,(nav sys, leather, etc.). Glad I did. The outside looks good and the inside is FANTABULAS! When considering the price, comfort, power, etc, Toyota hit a home run this time. The factory tires are very pricy,( 17" low profile) and hard to find. I found out the hard way. It's a long story! Bottom line, Great car!

I traded in my Saturn for this brand new Solara. I never really was intrested in Toyota but in a new Honda Accord which was way over priced! Being 20 I wanted a sporty car that also looked more "grown up". Then I saw the new Solara and I fell in love. I test drove one and then ordered mine. I cannot find one flaw in the car. And the best part everyone thinks it's the Lexus Coupe!

I originally wanted an Acura TSX. I test drove the Solara with the hope that I wouldn’t like it and be forced to get the Ac. Much to my surprise, I absolutely fell in love with it. A 2.4L-4cyl. manual with a kick. The interior is rather spacious, especially in the back, and the materials and layout are on point. I’ve put 1860 miles on it in only 2.5 weeks with never an uncomfortable moment. The sport edition’s aggressive stance looks like nothing else on the road. It fits my lifestyle…young, fun, and corporate. People can’t help but stop, stare, and compliment…and I just love driving it.
