Apparently, this rig is my life partner!
I bought my 1999 4Runner in 2007 with just under 100K on the odometer. 12 years later, we're still truckin' with 250K... and those have been some super fun miles! I live in Montana and spend half my life tooling around in the mountains and this rig has never let me down. More of my belongings are probably crammed into it than in my home. Skis, paddleboards, bikes, camping gear... both of us are always ready for adventure. I've slept comfortably in it at least 50 times and would choose it over a cheap hotel any day. (I'm 5'5" and me and my Springer Spaniel don't mind being cozy.) Reliable and easy, I've barely put any work into it other than routine maintenance. I've dabbled with the idea of maybe buying something newer, but honestly, nothing else will ever come close. Truly the best car I ever have, and probably ever will, have the privilege of owning. We're shooting for 400K and I don't doubt that we'll get there.
Watch out for the weather!
I love this car daily but beware in wintery, icy, and wet conditions! If this car is not in 4WD it may be the worst on the road. I have had two accidents one I slid on ice going very slow on the highway and the other a person slid in snow into me (I tell you this one bc ironically it was a 99 4-Runner). In regular conditions and straight snow it is great, but any thing else, it will slide all over!

Roll-over rate
My 4Runner rolled over in two separate accidents in moderate inclement weather; both times sedan-style cars drove through the same conditions right in front of me with no problems. The problem with their AWD is you must disengage it above 60 mph - makes it tedious to constantly be turning it on and off unlike other models that have AWD all-the-time. Be careful with this vehicle - can be a death trap.
Real SUV
It took me a while to see beyond the commercials on TV. Once I did that, I found that consumers reviews on the Internet are the best source of information. If you read them you see that Toyota beats ANY american car in quality and reliability. As for the SUV, almost all of them are now just minivans. Not so with Toyota. My 4Runner has a simple interior but is very comfortable. The engine runs perfectly and I had no problems. The 4X4 runs great and you can choose from 2WD, 4WD High for a rainy day, 4WD Low for serious off-roading and hub locking for special situations. The mileage is just as specified (16/19 mpg) which is good enough for its class.
Poor Performance, Nice Looks
The 4runner is an overall good SUV, but lacks the performance needed for some situations. If you are a car company and want to put an SUV in your line-up, make sure you compensate for the people that use it for highway use...in lain-man's terms, give it more balls.
