It is a Garbage Car

The manual transmission in my Esteem broke down three time times every year, the first time at 56,000 miles, the second at 60,000, and the third at 70,000. After some research I found a lot of people looking for the same transmission in many dierent websites, now what do you think about this car?

Suzuki Esteem 1999

Car of limited range. Builders had economy in mind with this car but the price commensurates. Car performed admirably to 60k miles when transmission needed to be replaced. Repair cost 1/10th of purchase price.

I bought my Esteem in 2000 used and have had literally no problems with it. Outside of the standard stuff (brakes, tires...etc) my Esteem has been the best. The key I find is to take proper care and do the oil changes regularly. I now have 130,000 miles on it with no sign of it giving up. It is great on gas but a little under powered with the 1.6L engine. A K&N air filter helps slightly with the power. The A/C is still working although I do re-charge it every year to lube the seals. After 6 years I am just starting to see slight signs of rust, which up here in Canada (we use salt on the roads in winter) is remarkable.

Rusted and Busted

This car was bought used. All the CV joints needed replacement three years ago. The outer on the right side exploded and left my wife stranded miles from home. Shortly after this the sub frame just fell apart from rust. The new sub frame just fell apart from rust last week just like the first one did. We also have had to replace the radiator and heater core. I have also had to put six outer door handles on this junk car. Right now brand new brake rotors, and lower control/ball joints are on the way by UPS for it. Parts for this car are expensive. Don't buy one even if its the last car on earth! Next month I will be buying a nice used Honda.

I bought this car new. It is now 14 years old. Nearly 100,000 miles on it. I've had no issues with it. It has been a wonderful car for me. I own the station wagon model 1.8L auto. Only just recently does it need a major new part: a radiator. Literally, this car has been the best car I have ever owned. So many negative reviews on here I see, but let's face it, if you buy a very used car there might be issues with it, ya know. I only wished I had bought it with cruise control. It has everything else. It rides louder than fancier cars that I have ridden in, but it has outlasted those others. I've taken care of my car over the years, and I would not hesitate to buy another Suzuki in the future.

Best little car I ever owned...

After driving (and driving and driving) my Esteem wagon for three years and 125,000 mi., I can say that I am happier with this car than any I have owned. When I bought it, I didn't even know Suzuki made cars, but I liked the styling and the price was right. I am happy to say that in three years (and all those miles), not one thing has gone wrong with it...I am amazed. It has even engendered brand-name loyalty in me: I actually shopped Suzuki first when looking to replace it (I looked at the Aerio, but the styling doesn't have me convinced). I'd recommend this car and think it would make a reliable used car purchase. ENJOY THIS CAR...I DID!!!!

Inexpensive Contemporary Wagon

I am ompletely impressed with this vehicle. I purchased it used for very little money from an owner that took good mechanical care of it. Cosmetically it could have been better but all his records were there. I have never had a major issue with it, just routine maintenance. Take care of your car and it will take care of you. The ride is a little crude, but when it comes to large bumps the suspension soakes it up with surprise. Its handling is sporty. Compared to other wagons that I tested, this thing is fun. Its cargo capacity is great. Its seats fold totally flat, I carried a week's woth of camping gear and was still able to cover the rear contents with the cargo shade. I'll have to continue to carry my 8 foot kayak inside the car untill I get the roofrack adapters that I need.

When I bought the esteem wagon, I was just looking for a beat around town car on that got good gas milage, But what I got was an excellrnt Family car that had room inside, was easy to get in and out of, and drove far better than the large car that i own also. I had heard so many good things about the Suzuki line of cars, but You really have to experience it first hand. I'm sure you will feel like do also. The Suzuki Esteem wagon is the best small car I have ever had the pleasure to drive. The only draw back I have found in the car is that when it is cold it is very sluggish in changing gears, but other than that everything else works great on the auto.

A great car that seems to be undervalued

This is an extremely reliable car that performs well. I remain puzzled as to why it seems so underrated. In my third year with this car, I find it's pick-up to be excellent - as fine as that of my former Honda. I have only had minor repairs to date, and have over 66,000 miles on the car. The new small wagons don't compare in terms of cargo capacity. I travel comfortably with 2 cats and a dog in this car.
