2018 Impreza 5 door Sport: Unbeatable snow monster
The good stuff: I have a bad back and so far have had no issues with seat comfort. So far, the longest trip in the Impreza was about 90 miles each way. I will be driving it to South Carolina soon and that is 1500 miles round trip so we will see how that goes. My normal driving to work and back home is 3.6 miles round trip with zero highway and a total of 12 traffic lights (usually get at least 8 red lights) so my city fuel mileage is poor at around 19.8 mpg. But, that's any car I would own because of the driving I do. My highway mileage however was awesome!!! That last trip which was 180 miles round trip, I got 40.8 mpg doing an average of 70 mph going from central to eastern PA so the highways are not flat. Lots of hills to climb. Cargo area is big for this size car. I can fit 2 sets of golf clubs sideways behind the back seats. Fold the seats down and the cargo space is huge. Handling is great. The Impreza Sport has 18" wheels and always feels stable. Never gets "squirly" on me and I'm an aggressive driver. I also have the EYESIGHT driver assist system so the adaptive cruise is something I will never give up. The car has cloth seats and they are heated as well as the outside mirrors. I can't think of any other car in this class to have those 2 things as standard equipment or even available as an option. I have never sat in the back seat so I can't comment on that (you will have to ask my dog). Snow driving is absolutely unmatched by any other compact car, SUV, or CUV on the market. This Subaru and every other Subaru just cannot be beat by any thing else on the market. They go thru the snow like nothing else....PERIOD!!! Off the line performance is OK. I would love a little more power but with the driving I do it's adequate. I will say, after 1000 miles the power has really come alive ( I only have 1400 miles on it). Off the line is still a bit slow but when you get the engine cranked up it really flies. So if you test drive one, ask to drive one with a few thousand miles on it and you will see what I mean. I only have a few complaints. The infotainment system was a little buggy at first. Subaru came out with an update and almost everything is cured. Once in a blue moon I will get a screen freeze or the back up camera won't turn on. I just shut the car down and wait about 30 seconds and restart the car and it is fine. Just like a smart phone it needs a re-boot once in awhile....no big deal to me. I wish the car had fog lights, a power drivers seat, and auto climate control. Those items are standard on the limited trim. I can't even get the fog lights as an add on...kinda stupid there Subaru! So, if you need cargo space, great handling, highway fuel mileage, and get me thru anything mother nature throws at me kinda car...look no further than this car.

Subaru, the no-brainer choice
I’ve been stalking the compact car segment since 2010. Through and through, Subaru is the best choice. Excellent resale value, cheap to maintain, excellent ownership experience. I finally decided I wanted to take a leap and lease my first new car. I test drove a toyota yaris ia, but I backed out because the subaru was not much more expensive and a much better overall package. I went with the 2.0i premium in white/tan cloth because I’m cheap, couldn’t be happier. The interior space is fantastic, and the hatchback is an improvement over past impreza hatchbacks. I’ve only put 76 miles on the odometer, but after a mix of highway, city, and backroad driving, I can tell I will enjoy this car. It will suit most anyone’s needs. It’s not sporty, but it can be playful, its not a cloud on wheels either but its perfectly tolerable. The steering doesn’t return-to-center very much. Minimal feedback from the front wheels. Brake pedal is top notch. Very smooth and easy to modulate. Gas is very touchy. From a stop, it has a decent punch, but it likes to lock the torque converter early and hold the engine at 1150 rpm if you don’t try to accelerate hard, which makes it feel slow, but when you mash it like you mean it, the cvt is very responsive and it will get up and go. When you let off the throttle, it will hold the rpm at 1250 and engine brake while cutting fuel injection. When slowing down, re-activation of fuel injection is very noticeable and jerky. Manual mode works well. Shifts are near automatic quality, but still on the slow side. Good response time though. Nice turning radius. Nice visibility. I’m not crazy about many of the interior design elements like the dashboard, windshield base, or gauge cluster. I much prefer the gauge cluster of the crosstrek, which looks like it belongs on a luxury car, but these gauges look clunky and dull. There are a bunch of weird shapes and angles going on inside the interior that don’t impress me. Overall I’m very pleased with this car. Looking forward to buying it once my lease is up, unless the 2021s turn out to be 10x cooler. Update: I now have 483 miles on it. My opinion of the car has soured a bit. I really don’t like the throttle pedal. It’s way too sensitive. It is genuinely difficult to sustain slower speeds than 35 mph without gradually building speed. This is an issue because I drive on a military installation with 0 tolerance for speeding and 90% of the speed limits are 25 or slower. This means that my foot is pushing the pedal only a few mm just to go 25mph without slowly increasing in speed. Its exremely irritating because transition from no throttle to some is very jerky thanks to fuel injection cutoff, and I have to reduce my throttle input to very near 0 without actually going to 0, because 1, its jerky, and 2, it will slow down aggressively. The only way to make sure I’m not still gaining speed is to check the speedometer frequently.

Why look elsewhere and pay more?
This iteration of the Impreza is far better than the 2006 and 2014 models my wife and son have owned. Strong on-road character in tracking and cornering, very quiet ride even in the base model, and the CVT pulls strong while keeping the engine revs wherever they need to be while delivering between 35 and 40mpg. I have a 98 mile commute each day and I expect my vehicles to always get me through at least a quarter million miles before I start looking for a replacement. And yet I don’t baby them through Maine winters and the logging roads that bring me to my favorite trout waters. So after considering each of its peers, there was no other vehicle that could exceed the Impreza’s features or capabilities. It’s a much better value than what Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, Kia, or even Jeep offer (and I’ve owned five Jeeps over the years). It is quiet and its drivetrain is the best AWD platform available. Sure, I could have spent more for the Crosstrek’s better ground clearance and towing capability but the reality is that I wanted the best value for my money and I needed to maximize my fuel economy. This base Impreza delivers it all and I highly recommend it to everyone who needs a comfortable and capable daily driver.

Why would anyone complain about this vehicle
This is my second Imprezza Hatchback. I bought a 2015, also a limited and drove it for 2 years. Although I really did like that car, the one reason I traded to a 2018 was my own fault which I will address later here. I became aware that the '15 was the last year made in Japan. This vehicle with the new platform is 10 times the car. The quietness of the ride and interior design makes this a no-contest between the two. I have read a ton of research reports complaining about the acceleration problems. I would ask those people just exactly how fast they want to go and how fast the want to accelerate. I have had this car for just over a year and have 18,000 miles on it and have had ZERO issues with that. A good friend lives up a very steep hill. When I hit that hill and punch it, it goes...right now. This is my fourth CVT, the first two being Nissan Altimas and then the 2015 Subby. Although the Nissan's were a bit more smooth, I have no problems with this one. I noticed one of the reviewers here complained about the gas mileage. My question to him would be "Just how fast do you drive". Yes, I am 74 years old and generally drive the speed limit or barely over it on the highway. I have not touched the "A" trip meter and through 18k miles the car says it has averaged just a touch over 28 MPG. That number of course is off. The actual average, using my own numbers is right around 26.5 mpg. That is the AVERAGE from highway and city over 18,000 miles. At highway speeds on multiple trips, while the on-board computer says I have gotten over 43 mpg, I have accurately figured up to 41 MPG at 60 miles per hour and I will verify that at 75 MPH, I can accurately predict an actual 36 MPG with the odometer reading 38 MPG. Ok, now lets get into the one HUGE drawback on Subaru's vehicles....and it is the same on their entire line as far as I can tell. The transmission. Subaru has insisted on installing a sealed, non-serviceable tranny in their cars. You cannot check the transmission fluid level, nor can you add fluid. In addition, there is a major design flaw on the underside of the car. The transmission has what, for all the world, looks like an oil pan and drain plug. On my 2015, I made the mistake of draining my trans fluid. I am told I am not the only one to do this. Professional oil change places have made the same mistake with a resulting blown transmission. Even though I had the problem resolved without issue on the 2015, that was the reason I dumped it and went to the 2018 and will not make the same mistake again. But the design flaw is still there. Overall however, this hatchback gives me all the room in the world, especially with both rear seats down. I have come to the conclusion that it may very well be the last car I ever buy. I average about 15k a year and, at 74 years old, I plan on getting to 200,000 miles with this.
It does what i want it to do
This car corners very well, great in the snow, and hauls everything I have put in it. On one occasion 400lbs.of dirt in bags, a pressure washer and gardening tools. Approaching 20K miles and still great.

CVT and other issues
Buyer Beware. I have had multiple issues with this vehicle and cannot recommend it or the brand based on my experience. 1.)Infotaintment system was chipped and vent was cracked upon delivery. I didn't notice until I took it home. - vent replaced. Pictures taken of chip but not replaced until I kept having other infotaintment issues. 2.) Infotaintment issues: Back up camera did not always come on, GPS did not always work or froze, display would freeze and not allow to change volume etc. - Reprogrammed then eventually replaced. Bluetooth sometimes cuts out on long drives but cannot verify if my phone or infotaintment system. 3.) Blower fan chirped loudly - replaced after multiple visits 4.) CVT lurches or has a dip in decceleration at about 18-19 mph. This requires that you push on the brake harder so not to get too close to the stopped car in front of you or when there is a dip in acceleration/momentum you end up stopped shorter than you were expecting and there is a whole bunch of space between you and the car in front of you. - Control unit reprogrammed which reduced roughness of 18/19 mph issue and caused issue number five. 5.) Hesitation/stuttering upon initial acceleration. - brought it back in and vehicle was tested and considered to be operating as designed. Brought car in for slow speed stall recall.... and it brought back issue 4 (really it never fully went away). It seems like issue 4 is similar to the review on 09/14/2018. I contacted Subaru and they told me to take it back to the dealer. The thing is the CVT issues are intermittent. They drive it for a mile or two and aren't going to call it an issues unless it is at its most severe form (which I consider a safety issue when it presents severely). I've driven several other Subarus so I have a good comparison and they do no have this issue.
Love my Subaru!!
This is my first Subaru and I LOVE IT!! I've owned other vehicles with no problems, well, except a Chevy. This Subaru made me feel very, very safe during a snow storm this past winter with only all season tires!!!! I usually have no issues in winter and always get home without problems, but I've always worried the entire time. Not sure why, but I did. With this car, it was the first time I've ever driven in a Snowstorm without worrying. It cut through the snow and had great traction!! I get an amazing 34mpg with my AWD Subaru!! I anticipated 30, but not 34!! Highest mpg was 36 and lowest was 31. Very impressive!! I'm a part time real estate agent and also work full-time elsewhere. My minium drive per day to my regular job is 58 miles. I put 300 miles per week on for real estate and this is much better than anticipated!! It goes up the hills without any problems!! The cargo size is quite large as well!! My 2 labs fit in the back with no issues!! It handles curves great!! The comfort is comparable with other vehicles. I'm sure a higher priced car would be more comfortable. I have no issues with this cars comfort!! It's also very roomy in back seat and front!! I also put my kayaks on top. I bought a very inexpensive roof rack for the side rails from Amazon for only $100 and are equivalent to a Thule. I'm EXTREMELY happy with my Subaru! I think Subaru is going to be the car I stick with from now on!!

Never Again
The CVT Transmission in the Impreza is the worst operating system I've ever driven. During and coming to a stop the CVT lunges forward and quite honest a beginner/new driver could have an issue...its the jerkiest and also non tracking vehicle...wow. I've sold!

Love my Soob
Drove 02 outback for last 4 years, got this 18 Impreza 6 weeks ago and loved it every drive. Awesome handling, smooth transition, great braking, feels heavy and safe.
Toss this one back
This is my third Impreza. After reluctantly returning a much-liked 2015 and asking for a Crosstrek, I was instead put into this thing by the dealership. While the interior is slightly more plush-looking and slightly roomier and the car overall will do until I can get into something else, it's just....a poor remake, fixing what wasn't broken, LOWERING the ground clearance rather than raising it (the one thing I did not like about my last Impreza) and adding annoying OCD features like constant, constant alarm-sounding and screen-flashing input from the unfortunately-not-optional driver safety system. An aggravation rather than a help for those who already know how to drive...like having Sheldon Cooper in your front seat, shrilly instructing you and distracting you at all times. When doing anything from turning on lights to activating the windshield wipers to trying to shut off the audio, there is a noticeable delay in response time. Sluggish. The exterior paint seems to be some sort of crayon compound; I put a miniscule scratch in the finish when my canvass work bag (no metal findings, just cloth) brushed against it as I tried to make the electronic key fob open the door. With good snow tires, it handles reasonably ok in snow, which is why it got three stars rather than two.The radio has NEVER shut off --read the manual, doesn't work. The vehicle is not environmentally friendly--spews flumes of exhaust whenever it's started, smells oily. I do like the backup camera and obstruction detector--that actually helps--but other than a used Forester which needed 19 repairs in two years, this is my least-favorite car..and that includes an old Neon which caught on fire as I was driving it.

90 mph on 2 lane roads feels like 120 mph
The steering ratio on the new Impreza global platform requires a heavy hand on the steering wheel to keep it on the road. Our other new 2018 Hyundai Ioniq has the perfect steering ratio and you can drive it with the little finger of one hand. But the Impreza requires constant 2 handed heavy hands to keep it on the highway At one point I was passing 2 semi's on a 2 lane road and ended up having to pass them at over 90mph to avoid other traffic and at that speed it felt like it was going to go airborne and fly off the road. It was that unstable at 90mph and felt like going 120mph --and it was a safety issue. So I dont recommend driving it over 70 mph under any condition. Replacing the Continental low end tires with high performance Michelin highway tires might help stabilize it. Apparently they changed the steering ratio from 16 to 1 down to 13 to 1 with the new global platform and thats why you have to drive it with such a heavy hand.. and I consider it a serious safety issue. For instance, if you just touch the steering wheel a tiny fraction, you will be off the road in an instant. Thats what I mean about driving it with a heavy hand. None of our other 5 cars have that issue with such critical heavy handed steering. I'm going to contact Subaru about the new Impreza steering issue. Also, the air conditioning with the outside air temp over 90 degs cant keep up with it. I asked the dealer to verify the A/C was working properly and they said it was. Temp less than 80 degs F range allows the A/C to handle it. But anything higher up into the 90 deg F range is marginal A/C performance compared to our other 5 cars. Update after 6 months: Unfortunately, after only 1 month of use, one of the low quality Continental tires developed a crack in the sidewall which is not repairable. So I had all the tires replaced with high quality Michelin all season tires. The Impreza drives a little better with higher quality tires but still requires a heavy hand on the steering wheel at all times. I should have purchased the Outback Subaru rather than the Impreza but the Impreza does seem to handle well on snow and ice without loosing traction. Its just that the low ground clearance of the Impreza dosnt lend itself to driving in heavy snow. The big drawback of the new Impreza is always having to have such a heavy hand on the steering wheel at all times. Then the first day of snow this fall some tiny bits of road sanding broke the windshield so now the the windshield needs replacement. So in the first 3000 miles both the tires and the windshield have failed.

Harman Kardan Head unit is a horrible piece of eq
don't buy one unless you don't want to use the radio or map systems, if you don't use these then i would recommend you drive along in silence peacefully. The dealers are being very quite about the horrible system that Harman Kardan has co opted with Subaru USA it has enormoous issues and if you google or go on line asking for the head system reviews you will see there are a lot of pissed off people expressing their anger of these units. My wife has taken her car in over 6 times to try and get Subaru to make this work and to no avail, the dealers tell you all that it needs is an update of which they have done three time, replaced the head unit once and still does not work. the unites are non functional.

What did Subaru do to the Impreza?
I had a 2018 Subaru Impreza. It ran so bad in traffic surging then almost stalling. I took it to the dealer 2 times but they could not recreate the problem so too bad even though it was still under warranty. . I am so disappointed . Prior to this car I I had a 2011 Impreza and loved it for 180,000 miles . The 2018 is gone now traded in and not for another Subaru.

A car I want to love...
wife and I saw this on the road, love the look. went straight to the dealership to test drive. We agree most of the Edmunds review. Except we found noise is a major issue. Wind, road and powertrain. the fasted was 68 mph or I85. didn't get a chance to take it up to 80 (which is most common speed I drive on highway). Have to say the car handles well, steering feels tight.

All this car needs is a turbo and a good 6 speed
Ive been leasing this car for 6 months, 4500 miles and been on a 900 mile trip, highway driving and city driving. I feel this has prepared me to say that this is one of the worst cars Ive leased. My previous car was a 2012 VW GTI 4 door and i just wanted to have AWD and a larger boot to haul more of my tools and things. First off, Subaru claims 27 city and 37 hwy. I hope they have changed that. its more like 20 city and 33 hwy. Combined fuel economy has been in the 25-26 range. The power is... there IS NO POWER. 152hp??? With a CVT trans? You have to really think about and plan your travels home if you take busy roads, need to change lanes, and sit in traffic at all. There is no get up and go. Add a turbo and a 6 speed auto trans and this will solve both of these issues. The lack of horsepower makes you mash the gas just to merge. And you still go nowhere. its so frustrating. If you make a right hand turn out of a stop sign and you think you can make it, you can not. Not without angering the person youre pulling out in front of. ARGH! This car is so frustrating. Its a good car. There isnt a lot of competition in this price bracket and with AWD and a hatchback. The interior is nice and comfortable. Android Auto has never worked for me and I have a Samsung S8+. the exterior looks good if you get the sport package. I do think this car looks kind of plain from the front. I also hate not having HID headlights. The boot of the hatchback is really spacious. The ride is a bit rough but I bought the sport package so I kind of expected it. But the Engine. it really sucks. The transmission makes it even worse. Subaru needs to make a WRX hatchback again. NEEDS. And it cannot cost $30K+. I bought this car for AWD and space and fuel economy and the nameplate. I will not buy another Subaru. Too much money compared to the nearest competitors.

Biggest Beef: Slow acceleration and speed. CVT
For an economical, safe car it is good as only car with AWD drive in its price range. IIHS rollover protection and crashworthiness along with the AWD is what made me buy this and not really knowing the slowness of it. Safety? Lots of gizmos, but if acceleration is so poor that you have to have advanced planning to change lanes in highways or merging, makes it on the unsafe side. I did not get the Optional Eyesight, but am thinking of adding Blind Spot Monitoring, with rear traffic sensors for 1400 dollars from the dealership. Just because its slow inn accelerating. The CVT rolls on and you can accelerate once it rolls but from a slow mode to accelerate once traffic in front clears takes time. The steering is responsive enough once on the road but it feels like the steering of modern Japanese cars; only a tad better and you have to be mindful doing it. Floaty as I call it. Car rides well, grips well on 2 day rainy weathered back roads of NC, corners well (that was the reason I bought it over the Legacy and the price), and in that aspect it keeps reasonably ok with the car. The air conditioning didn't seem very efficient, although the heating was. Car is roomier for my 6.4 ish partner and bigger than his Prius Eco. I find the ground clearance adequate as it is half an inch higher than my AWD BMW 3 series which i traded in for this. (I do not go off roading) Snow handling in the Triangle area of NC should be fine with the AWD as it is during the constant rainy weather. I am not getting great gas mileage doing city driving about approx 23, (almost as much as my AWD BMW, which is 6 cylinders and a larger 3 litre engine) but it is regular gas and not premium. Controls and tech gizmos don't matter to me as much as I like the plain-ish dashboard like the European cars. Wish the premium had back climate control and USB ports for passengers to access, but only has one in the front. No place for coins and keys (mailbox and others) to keep so bought a small case to velcro it in the space under the screen on the dash, although there is an arm rest under which you can place things. All in all it is a decent car for everybody's needs but the acceleration and CVT is BIGGEST negative point and is the only reason I am already thinking of other cars (front wheel drives) in it's range. Coming out of a BMW I don't compare, but the Honda Civic (also a front wheel drive) with the turbo is peppierr and would make me happier driving it. I think I made a mistake as a front wheel drive is more than enough where I live. But for everyone else who do need an AWD and not the speed (high, snowy places) this is unbeatable short of an SUV. I bought this car CPO (2017) from Subaru Dealership Southpointe mall, Durham, NC

Shake, RATTLE and Roll
I have never had a day in this car without a noise from some part of the poorly put together interior. My previous car, a Honda Civic, ran quietly for 15 years. This is the I kea of cars made in Indiana. I get a new noise every day. The "infotainment" system is pretty average with the current song on the radio displaying one word at a time so It takes about 2 minutes to read the title of a song. The time of day is supposed to update from my phone but never has so I vote to get rid of daylight savings time. I came to Subaru because of its great reputation but this is a terribly low average car which I regret buying. A really bad driving experience.

Poor Handling & Acceleration
Poor maneuverability and very poor acceleration. Awkward body shape of front end leads to lots of little dings when driving in tight parking lots, city, etc.. Transmission extremely loud when at max r/m and engine leaves a lot to be desired when driving up inclines. Yet, gas pedal is extremely touchy. Least favorite car I’ve ever driven
Slow and jerky
It stalls during acceleration. Horrible!!!

Very pleased with my buy
For reader's reference, I traded-in my 2007 Honda Fit Sport to get my new-to-me 2018 Subaru Impreza Touring/Premium (purchased Feb 2021) with 37,000kms on it. In regards to its CVT, I have no issues with it. Early CVT years (2013-2016) I drove Nissans and Toyotas and their CVTs were absolutely horrid. I believe Subaru's CVT in this generation is great. It makes the vehicle good on gas, it does not lag unless you floor it from a stop. I do not mind it. Is it the faster car? No. Will you find it lagging on the highway? Also no. It is great for both in-city and high speed driving. Personally, I will drive it at 140kms/hr on the highway with ease and the car handles fantastic at that high speed. The interior is thoughtfully laid out and looks very good for its price point in my opinion. I have not experienced any infotainment/electrical issues. Apple CarPlay is fantastic and responsive. Pretty good sound system as well. The AWD makes this vehicle perfect in winter months. Good handling. Room for improvement: brighter headlights. I love my car so far.

2018 Subaru Impreza Hatchback Limited Trim
This car has a nice interior with overall high quality materials and good leather. The infotainment system is lackluster compared to other systems of the time, and sometimes is difficult to use Android auto easily. The exterior is boring and outdated, with a low quality front bumper, which is easily damaged by road debris or undercarriage impacts. The powertrain is the most disappointing part of this car, as the driving experience is boring and lackluster as after 100 mph, the engine just gives up and will have a difficult time accelerating properly. It has a hard time accelerating from standstill for a car of it's size, with a noticeable delay from the CVT, which feels sluggish and unrefined. The car has had several issues with the suspension in both the front and back, and for a 2 year old car, i have had to have the struts replaced as they failed. I have driven this car on Mexican roads with many potholes, and the suspension system just does not hold up. Overall, the vehicle has an OK design and gets the job done, but for the money, I could have gotten something of a lot higher quality. The build quality is average overall, as this car has many creaks and noises which are very obvious. I take it for regular maintenance and checkups often, and the technicians have not been able to find the cause of the loud creaks and have determined that it is just in the vehicle's design and i will just have to deal with the noise. The climate where i live is quite humid and hot for 95% of the year, and the car has shut down randomly about 3 times in the past two years after being on for over an hour. These issues could be from the electrical systems rebooting, however the cause has never been determined and the car will turn on and run perfectly fine after this happens.

I love this car
Bought it certified used from the dealer, this car rules. I've had it for 4 years now and have 0 complaints. Love the eyesight system, love the interior, and it's a decent looking car too. Has enough power, and the AWD is great. PLUS 34mpg combined is pretty amazing.

Absolute trash
I bought this car new. It's one of the noisiest interior cars I've owned, and that's with used ones in the mix. It's had 5 recalls (two of those because of class-action lawsuits, including one lawsuit because of bad fuel pumps.) I have the stick and it still has the acceleration of a dead cow. The car sits so low and the front fascia is even lower, so it's not if you hit something, it's when. The auto-dim mirrors are useless with modern LED headlamps, they simply don't filter out the correct light spectrum. The radio has a dorito for it's processor, and it may connect to your phone or it may require yet another factory reset. At 70,000 miles - literally just as the warranty expired - the rear brakes and wheel bearings were bad. The wheel bearing/hub assemblies are terrible designs, and are going to go bad. Again, and again, they will go bad, front and rear. At $267 a bearing you're going to be paying a lot. Parts of this assembly are covered under bulletins they are so bad. I've never had a car suffer a catastrophic failure at this low of a mileage, even a Hyundai will give you 110k before it dies. The only thing I'll give this car is it has an excellent heater, and even in negative temperatures it keeps the cabin so warm you sweat.
