1st Subaru and it's great! ISSUES WITH TECHNOLOGY

After owning Hondas, Toyotas and a Nissan, we test drove this vehicle on a whim. We were trying to replace a Nissan Versa that was extremely gas friendly, but not great on the interstate. We test drove the Corolla, Mazda 3, and Impreza back to back. The CVT transmission was surprisingly responsive and didn't cause the engine to produce the horrible whining noise I have heard in other cars. The handling was also fantastic. Between the AWD and the boxer engine, the car just sits on the road. The overall experience was very engaging. I don't know if I will ever be able to go back to Toyota and Honda. From the Subaru dealership to the car itself, I was blown away. We are now six months into our Subaru ownership and agree that we will never buy the first generation of a Subura ever again. We continually experience issues with our speaker system including: * Our back speaker was making a crackling noise and after a few weeks of ordering new parts they found it was actually the amp. * Whenever we ignore a call through the audio system, the interface goes silent and we cannot listen to any phone calls/radio stations/etc. There is no easy way to fix the issue. Even after turning off the car and turning it back on, it is still frozen. * Sometimes we experience an issue where our volume will freeze and you are unable to turn it up or down.

Fun, solid car

My wife and I were both civic owners for 13+ years each. She got a Crosstrek a few years back, which has been really good to us so far. So when my civic started overstaying its welcome I decided to include subaru in my search. Also test drove a honda civic and toyota corolla. While the Subaru does't exactly have the most potent acceleration- slowest of this group - it is the most fun to drive, in my opinion. The sport trim has a differently-tuned suspension and a tighter steering ratio. Combine these features with the all wheel drive and what you get is a car that you just want to drive. Subaru also got their act together with the interior. The visibility on the subaru is great (corolla is good too). However, the civic's rear visibility was lacking because of the car's aggressively sloped rear end. Plus, the subaru just feels way more solidly built than the corolla or civic.

What a difference a year makes

Serious problems with the electronics system. When we bought this car, we loved it, but recurring problems with the electronics system have made it a source of stress. When we bought the car about a year ago, we had no problems for the first three or four months. Then the radio kept cutting in and out, and the presets kept disappearing. In spring 2017 we took the car to the dealer, but they couldn't find the problem. About a month later we took the car in for its six-month service, and told them we were still having problems with the radio. Again, the dealer was unable to diagnose the problem. About a month later, we took the car in for ongoing problems with the Starlink system, Android Auto, and the radio. The dealer said that because this was the third time we'd taken the car in for a recurring problem, they would contact Subaru of America. At that point the Starlink warning light kept coming on. Later that month we took the car back in because of these ongoing electronics problems. The dealer gave us a loaner. Our car was in the shop for three weeks, during which time the dealer replaced the head unit. In late 2017 the electronics problems resumed intermittently. The problems seemed to occur when the temperature got below freezing. In January we took the car in for routine servicing and mentioned the latest electronics problems, and we were told that a new software update should take care of those problems. We're keeping our fingers crossed. To Subaru's credit, the company has given us an extended warranty (seven years or 100,000 miles, $0 deductible Gold Plus Subaru Added Security Plan) because of all the electronics problems we've had with this car. We are considering replacing an 11-year-old car and are in a quandary as to whether to consider a Subaru. One reason we bought the Impreza is because of Subaru's previously good reputation for reliability. But because of our experience with the electronics system and the weak acceleration, we're considering manufacturers other than Subaru.

2017 Impreza 7 yr update

7yr update 69,000 miles Daughter off in Europe on study abroad so I am back driving this Impreza to work (84 miles roundtrip). Good commuter car, has the upgraded sound system, however seats not as thickly padded as in our 2018 Legacy or 2020 Forester. Averaging 33-35 mpg on commute. Corners really well for a non-sporty car. Very low to the ground makes getting in and out a bit more difficult compared to the other Subarus. Issues-We are on our third windshield (Subaru windshields seem to crack easily); Subaru replaced a rear wheel bearing at the 60k service in 2023 (we had the 7 year 70k extended warranty)-that makes two wheel bearings in 7 years (thankfully both covered). Just regular maintenance. On third set of tires. Paid off and ready for more years of service! 5yr update Due to pandemic and virtual Hijgh school few miles accumulated last year -36000 miles. No issues mechanically although Subaru issued two recalls that were completed-replaced ignition coil packs and updated Subaru STARLINK programming from 3G to 5G Still consider great choice for student although city mileage is poor-averages 22 in city but over 30 on highway 4 yr update Just over 33000 miles. Regular maintenance. Replaced original battery at 4 yrs. no issues. Great car for our HS student who will be taking to college in the fall. 2.5 yr update, Just got the Impreza back from its first major service (30 months, it is at 25000 miles), Dealer replaced under warranty a sticky right side exterior mirror, had a radio update recall done, and had a cracked windshield replaced (also needed the Eyesight recalibrated), The cracked windshield was from one of the many pebbles and random road debris on I-45 in Houston. Overall, the car has served its purpose well serving as a back up commuter car. It is soon to be turned over to a High School student for their daily commute of 2.5 miles to and from school so the mileage will be even less from now on. The car is not common which I like and sticks well to the road in the heavy rainstorms that we have here. It is low to the ground and handles quite well. I had to make an emergency maneuver around a stopped semi on the highway and did great. Mileage does not quite live up to EPA estimates but still averages around 33-34 on highway but only 23 around town. No issues with oil usage-but it was very carefully broken it during the first 1000 miles. 1.5 year update Just hit 15000 miles and third complimentary service No problems at all-32.7 lifetime mpg with 70/30 highway/city mix. Eyesight is great and use even if heavy traffic. 1 Year Update Still enjoying the Impreza hatchback limited. Very quiet on drives. Took it from Houston to Dallas and once to Austin. Handles the interstate and farm highways fine. Keeps up with traffic and plenty of passing power. Highway mileage is around 36 and averages 32-not as good as I had hoped for compared to our bigger 2014 Subaru Forester which averages 28. Had 1 recall that was quickly handled (update to entertainment system/backup camera). 2 year free maintenance is great. I like that it is not super common-the Crosstrek is much more popular in Houston-so it stand out in parking lots. Eyesight system works great-the second edition update is much smoother than in our Forester. Even use it in stop and go traffic. THe lane assist does not really steer the vehicle but nudges you back into your lane if you stray to close to the lines. The blind spot warning is great-supervisible on the inside of the outside mirrors and helps in heavy traffic. The back up reverse will stop if you are about to hit something. Already saved me from hitting a car. We bought this car for a soon to be teenage driver so we have all of the safety features available. Before that happens, it will be our backup commuter car (85 mile round trip commute). It is very nice, comfortable ride, cruises easily in Houston traffic at 80-85 (normal speed for Houston), got 40 mpg on highway today. Around town, 29 mpg. Very spacious and quiet. Test drove Honda Civic which was very loud inside and the adaptive cruise control was not as good as the Subaru Impreza. Infotainment is much improved for Subaru (we also have a 2014 Subaru Forester). I think it has more than adequate acceleration to keep up with traffic but it is not a WRX. THe hatch is the best buy, great space on the inside and very good visibility. Check it out!

I'm reasonably "Impressed" with my Impreza

2017 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Premium 4dr Hatchback AWD (2.0L 4cyl CVT)

I bought this car based on its safety profile. It far outshines any other car on the market as far as safety goes. Unfortunately, if you want the Impreza, you are forced to buy at least the Premium model in order to get the safety features Subaru is known for. So, if price is an issue, you are going to have to pay more than you were planning, if you want those features. The "eyesight" feature is fantastic! The blind side warning has been extremely and surprisingly helpful. The Adaptive Cruise Control feature is awesome....you rarely have to step on the brake. I am concerned, a bit, that it does more engine braking to slow down while in cruise control, than using the actual brakes, so the people behind you don't know you are slowing down, as there are no brake lights with the engine braking. All that being said, the MPG is mediocre at best....it claims combined 31mpg, but that seems a bit high. One would think they could come up with a more fuel efficient car in this day and age. It was a big sacrifice on my part....I would have much preferred a car with at least 35mpg, but, I had no choice. The Toyota safety features just didn't compare. The audio system is horrible! Shame on them! the Apple Play feature works sporadically. Sometimes the car recognizes my phone book and contact list, and sometimes says I have no contacts. Really??? When it works, it's fine, but there really is no excuse for the poor technology. Also, only ONE USB port in a very awkward place that's hard to get to, and lastely, the most ridiculous thing of all, is that when I turn the car on or off, the radio begins blaring. When I spoke to the dealership about it, they told me it was a known problem, and the only thing I can do is turn my volume all the way down. All in all, it is a cute care, so far it runs smoothly, and I do feel safe in it, which is what its all about in the long run. Also, I did quite a bit of shopping, and the Internet price was by far the best price I could get anywhere. Thank you Edmunds!

I love the way this car handles - it holds the road much better than any of my previous cars. All the EyeSight safety features are great to have! In particular, the rear cross-traffic warning tells you when a car is coming when you're backing out of a parking spot, which you'd never see any other way. I just bought the car, and it's summer, so I haven't yet found out how the all-wheel drive works in winter weather. My only complaint is that the car is loaded with loads of silly, useless, or annoying features; e.g. the radio comes on for a second every time you turn on the ignition. But once I learn to ignore all these, I'm left with a great car! UPDATE: After about 6 months, I can add a few more comments about this car. For one, the all-wheel drive seems to make quite a difference when driving in snow! It gripped the road better than I had expected, and I felt much more in control, with hardly any wheel spinning or skidding. Wonderful! One complaint, though: the clearance under the car seems inadequate sometimes. The car bottoms out when entering or exiting some cut curbs, and I have to slow down to a crawl to prevent this. That didn't happen in my Civic; I think Subaru should have increased the clearance an inch or two to prevent this. Other than that, I'm very pleased with this Impreza. UPDATE 1 year later: Some of the electronic components have begun to malfunction. The radio often starts by itself, the beeps you hear when locking or unlocking the car have stopped working twice, and I've had to go through the menu items to reset them. These are more nuisance malfunctions than safety malfunction so far, but I'm beginning to worry that other more important systems will start to malfunction too. Also, the overall mileage since owning the car, while not terrible, is less than we were led to believe it would be. Update 2: After 3 years, I still am pleased with the car, but it has its flaws. As I've mentioned above, the clearance is inadequate to clear many cut curbs, and results in bottoming out several times a year. The electronic gizmos regularly have minor malfunctions, but these are usually just nuisances. The care handles well in rain and snow, that's the part I like best. The mileage has averaged about 29.5 mpg, which is somewhat disappointing, but at least I have a car that handles well in bad weather and has very useful safety features. I'd buy it again.

Full Review you NEED to read. The REAL Subaru

This is the real review of this car and others the same year. To start off, I have the fully loaded premium 2.0. I now have 6,500 miles on my car in a year of ownership. This is because it has been in the shop for months of my ownership (starting with probems at 500 miles). Between my car not starting, the bluetooth not staying connected, the radio having it's own mind, and the Eyesight turning on and off on its own and slamming on the brakes by itself...I am unable to drive this vehicle due to the safety concerns. I contacted Subaru many times, and never got a call back and they kept giving me the cold shoulder, even though I was beyond nice about everything. I eventually had to get a lawyer, which was an easy thing to do since the car was a complete lemon. After everything got settled and I got my money back for that terrible experience, I called Subaru and was willing to give them a second chance, even though their customer service was horrible and their vehicle was garbage. Subaru would not give a loyalty discount, a deal to keep a customer (that was not my first Subaru...I have had many and referred friends and family to them). Their products have declined as well as their customer service. Not worth putting your money into these problem vehicles until they get themselves together and back their customers. Next thing...my sister owns a 2017 Subaru Impreza 2.0 in stick. She has 9k miles on it and it has been into the shop MANY times for similar issues. However, the biggest issue is that her BRAND NEW car burns oil so badly that she needs to fill the oil reserve every month because the low oil light indicator comes on. They keep telling her, "Cars burn oil, its normal." Ummmmm, no Subaru...I have had many cars and have a truck with 180k miles and never need to add oil between changes. Anyways, she is using my lawyer and will as well win against them. Please keep all of this in mind while deciding on a new Subaru.

I’ve driven a Subaru my entire life, I’ve had a 1997 outback, and a 2002 legacy wagon so my first thought was to look at the dealership that my family has purchased all of these from first. This is where it all started. The five speed manual trans was good to boot but after the first two weeks gears would not catch, the clutch is just a mess, and the absolute lack of power is honestly astonishing. I live in western Pennsylvania, hills are where you live and they’re very steep in some places; having to put your brand new car into second gear, holding everyone up behind you and smelling the burning of the engine is not what you want. The interior is dismal place, I wanted the black interior but even when I first sat in it I knew it was mostly hard plastics. Subaru has never been known for Scandinavianesk interiors full of plush seats and comfort but it was not so much as to write the whole car off. The front seats, I have not sat in the back, are worse than my 1997 outbacks; not lumbar support and you might be able to push it up two pumps but that’s about as useful as a stair case in a nursing home in terms of visiblility. The big issue I’ve had is the electronics, if I could of given them a negative rating I would have. The infotainment system is Dim whitted, you almost have to punch it to get a response sometimes and that’s only when it works properly. The screen cuts out and sometimes just freezes, the Bluetooth is horrendous at best but that’s only if your phone stays connected long enough for it to actually play any music through it; Apple car play which came with the car is not much better either. ACP is the only thing I have ever used that kicks your phone off while it’s still connected. The backup camera- which was a big selling point for me-usually freezes on the screen or makes the whole system reboot and makes the car shake like it’s going to stall out. The electronic gas gauge does what it pleases and when it pleases, I’ve gone 183 miles without loosing a bar and started it up again to find the gas light on. Only to then put 4-6 gallons back in it and it go all the way back to the top. My dealership has tried to move forward in fixing it three times already to only tell me that they “cannot duplicate.” This is all on top of only really getting 16-20(if I’m lucky) miles per gallon, if I was planning on that MPG I would have gotten a hemi Dodge Ram. I have already started talks with Subaru of America and a Lemon law lawyer in my state. Subaru has been in my family since they have moved to western PA and I cannot say if this car is just a flook or something else but before you purchase one of these cars do yourself a favor and wait a couple of years until the bugs are worked out. If you do not you might end up like me and having to spend your limited free time trying to get your lemon replaced with the car you wanted in the first place. **2019 Update** The car was an absolute lemon. I have personally sworn to never own another Subaru, Atleast for a while. There has been two major recalls from Subaru since and I’m happy I chose not to go back. The car itself was repurchased under the lemon law and Subaru corporate was actually very nice. The customer service rep I had for my region is probably the only reason I’d go back. I wish I could say mine was an isolated incident but these reviews tell you the truth from owners and I know mine was just one of many that had major issues. The dealer lied to me the whole time and made me feel like I was making these issues up; I’m just happy I chose to continually push to get my issue taken care of. After all of that, the Honda I own now has been nothing but perfect!

Nice Hatchback

The Impreza has been very reliable. I've done nothing but scheduled maintenance. I wrote earlier that the engine felt sluggish at first, but after about 4000 miles, got peppier and is fine at any speed. For a small car, the Limited has nice features like the steering responsive (turn with steering wheel) LED headlights and the Adaptive cruise (slows down when care in front slows down). I chose that model for the leather/vinyl seats which are easy to clean. Subaru does a good job on the Eyesight features, giving you a message when something is NOT working. When it is stormy, sometimes I'll see the word Eyelsight with a line through it, telling me it's not working because of poor visibility. My previous car had a blind spot monitor and it was shut off without any dashboard warning. I almost had an accident. I found that the on/off switch for it had a light but faced the floor! I may have shut it off getting in or out with snow pants.

I recently accepted the buyout of my Golf SportsWagon Diesel because a year and a half later I received the price I paid. So, my review will be somewhat of a comparison especially since they are similarly priced. First, the materials used in the VW were far superior. It was a sturdier ride with little to complain about noise wise. This Is not the case with the Impreza. The car is two months old and already has numerous areas that rattle plus depending on road surface, it can be quite loud inside. I will say the front seats of the Impreza are more comfortable than the VW because of it's smaller seat area. The room in front are about equal with the rear seat area of the Impreza having more space. The upgraded stereo of the Impreza only offers decent sound where the fender system of VW was rocking. The Impreza's Apple Play sometimes just does not work. When it is not working, the other media like Bluetooth, Aux and Cd's will not work either only leaving the radio that works. The biggest disappointment is the gas mileage. I went from a 32mpg average to 23.5mpg with both having tanks of just over 13 gallons. There are nice design features and functionality but for the quality offered the Impreza is healthily over priced

Lots of room but terrible Gas Mileage and SLOW

I like Subaru in general. Why? Because I live in New York State and we get lots of snow and this thing handles awesome in bad weather. I always liked Subaru for that reason alone. I don't hate my Impreza. Not at all. I like a lot about this car, especially the hatchback, which has TONS of room. Seriously. I'm leaving this car for an Accord and know I'll miss this one thing. The cons outweigh the pros though. One of the biggest issues I have with this car is how freaking slow it is. 2.0L means absolutely nothing if you don't have turbo. This car is the slowest car I have ever owned besides my S10 pickup. Also, the gas mileage is atrocious. Everything Subaru tells you about the gas mileage on these things is a total lie. I get maybe 26/27MPG on the highway, if I'm lucky and I am only doing highway (long trips). But I do a lot of driving in my personal vehicle for work, which means a lot of "city driving" and I am getting 20-23 MPG. That's horrible for this car. Before I went back to Subaru I was in a Cadillac STS that was AWD and was a 6 cylinder turbo and I was getting better gas mileage than this. I've seen a lot of issues with entertainment problems from other reviewers. I've had a few, not as many as others but a few. If you like Android Auto, get yourself a solid cord because anything but the best connector and you'll lose connection constantly. Overall I didn't hate this car. I had some good trips and good memories in it. But I've had enough and it's time to get into a new, faster car with better MPG.

All would seem fine if my 2017 Impreza Hatchback had in town gas mileage better than the (very) low 20s and highway gas mileage that rarely topped 30. Those are major shortcomings also happen to be costly. (After a full year's ownership, the gas mileage has slight worsened.) Not impressive, especially given the contrast between the EPA figures and real world experience.

It's great on the road! Very comfortable, solid, responsive. The console outlets are awkward to get to. Driver's side door didn't latch properly; had it replaced; still doesn't latch properly. Sadly, two weeks after purchase, got caught in a hailstorm, and the car is in a body shop to repair or replace roof, hood, doors😢

I call it my CarPuter. There are a myriad of menus, commands, controls so that a PhD in computer science would help. The Big Flaw is that every day or so a message pops up that says "Telematics Service in Progress". When this happens you have no radio,CD, etc. And it won't go away until you shut down the car for a while. The salesman said he 'Never heard of that"; I asked two mechanics about it and they also never heard of it. The service manager said if I "bring the car back I'll work on it for an hour to figure this out." I wrote to Subaru HQ in NJ and they never answered my question. I've asked new Subie owners I meet and they all say that doesn't happen on my car. This is insufferably frustrating! I have to carry a portable radio now for when this inane message pops up. Oh, and there is no true mute so you can't mute the radio when a commercial starts. You press the volume dial and it mutes, but when you un-mute it a minute or two later it returns to the start of the commercial! Stupid. My last car, a Mercedes C300 had a mute that worked properly. You could also lock the car which you can't in this thing. Other than that, I love the mileage, AWD, and when you finally figure out the safety features they are great. Is the car a lemon? Well, perhaps a citrus fruit. UPDATE: There is a fix for the Telematics bug and the dealer fixed it. However it keeps telling me it's 2015 and gives an incorrect time. My cheap portable clock I taped to the dash works fine. Even if the dealer fixes the time/date, it goes bad after 2 weeks. And yes, you can lock the car by pressing the door handle. To unlock, you just grip the front door handle, but this doesn't work for the rear so you have to fish the fob out of your pocket to open it. I've been waiting for a replacement fob for the one I lost for 2 months - dealer gave me the price ($167) and said he'd call. He never did. I can get up to 32 MPG now. Update: The dealer fixed the clock and date after ordering a part. Based on past non-performance I still don't trust the electronics. I never "explore" around in the myriad of menus, sub-menus, and sub-sub menus - too many electronic items by half. Met a lady who has a similar 2017 Impreza and she loves it. She asked, "Did you get a lemon?" Electronically, yes - otherwise no. I'm still pleased with the mileage with the super high gas prices I can get 34 MPG frequently.

Good solid build just like other Subaru. Relatively, coming from Buick Verano, Subaru Impreza lacks acceleration and the comfy ride, but Impreza makes up on the economical MileaguePlus, good handling (almost-zero turn) and AWD capability.

UPDATE: I'm still extremely frustrated by the lack of a CD player - even after 3 years! Also, my knuckles are skinned from trying to use the charger for a GPS. Very poor design! If one wants a basic car - manual transmission, hatchback - the base model DOES NOT include a CD/MP3 player, even for a few dollars more. The more I spend time in the car the more I miss the lack of a CD player! It affects the driving experience, especially on longer trips. No, I don't have a smart phone (salesman kept telling me how to download music, books, etc.) so this approach is N/A. I have a lot of CDs and get books on CD from the library, giving me a lot of variety (also free). Also there are fewer nooks and crannies to store things than in my 2005 Ford Focus wagon (e.g. a change compartment, CDs, subglasses, etc.). The center arm rest almost blocks one of the beverage holders, making it awkward to use. Mileage is about 30-33 MPG on regular. It has 2 chargers: using one means you must remove stuff from the cubby to get to, the other is in the armrest, also making it awkward. Consumers Reports has removed its high rating due to "electronics." Yes, they are cumbersome to use. It you want to take lots of time, they probably work as designed, even if unfriendly.- but I don't use most of the features - and there's NO CD PLAYER! Mileage on regular gas is good: 33-34 mpg.

A practical choice for driving to work and back, shuttling kids around, and picking up small loads. AWD makes for all-weather capability, but acceleration is anemic and steering meanders. Not a performance car, but comfortable and efficient.

I've been leasing my cars for 30 years, my last 7 have been Hondas and never a problem so I could kick myself for switching over to the Subaru Impreza. I've had it for 10 weeks and the best mileage I've gotten is 220 miles to a tank of gas but average is 180 to 200. The engine is loud and the car feels like it's about to stall until it is warmed up. Does not hold the road well on highway. I usually do a yearly road trip from Florida to NY but will not be doing it with this car. To make matters worse this car is costing me $95 more a month than my last Honda. It's going to be a long 3 years till my lease ends.

I have fallen in love with my Subaru, now having owned it for a little over a year. The gas mileage has improved substantially once I'd added an aftermarket cold air intake (which greatly increased horsepower, too). I'm now averaging about 30 miles to the gallon of gas (combined city and highway driving). I replaced the stock exhaust with a less restrictive, flow through model....and that has increased gas mileage, too. I wouldn't trade this car in for anything!

My first Subaru, had a top of the line Toyota Camry xle, subaru does not compare. First I was taken with the protection "glass coat" and the interior protection. If raindrops get on inside, it automatically leaves marks hard to get off, and sunscreen on your hands or legs is pretty much a cannot do in that car.sap is supposed to come off in the car wash, no way. The biggest problem is startup sound, sounds like an old engine, no remote start for a $32k car. The Entertainment center is seriously messed up and malfunctions big time! I will be taking it in but from what I read Subaru is not supportive. I have a whole list of things unfortunately. 😢

This car is really well rounded, and for me was the closest thing to what I want. Safe, hatchback, low to the ground, comfy for 4 tall people, awd, dependable, fun to drive, nice looking. My only hesitation is the CVT; I don't car for the simulated shift points and at times it seems to stumble as the "brain" tries to figure out the best ratio of fuel, air, and speed. On the whole, it's the best car for me right now, and I'm very satisfied.

This is a pleasant car to own and operate. The digital systems are extremely complex, to the point that I would discourage anyone to purchase the vehicle. It is unpleasant and discouraging, destroys the joy of a new car. The manuals are excessive but too complicated to understand. Particularly, the different models are all mixed up, and one does not know which features are in or not in the particular vehicle purchased (new, from dealer) including initial dealer demonstrations. All too complicated and as mentioned manuals are equally complicated. There should be a separate manual for each vehicle type: for instance the Starlink quick guide includes on its cover: Crosstrek, Impreza, Legacy, and Outback. The Starlink Owners Manual includes all 3 options: 6.5 inch, 8 inch multimedia plus and 8 inch multimedia navigation. I believe that weak color coding for what applies to which, but it is not at all clear. All is disgusting. I read too late that the 2017 models were downrated for this sort of complication, but mine is a 2018 and experience indicates that the situation has not been improved.

Let me start with the good. The sound system is great. I listen to Michael Jackson songs and hear sounds I never heard before. The car handles so well- like a sports car. The manual transmission is how I like it- very responsive and somewhat unforgiving- it does what I want. The seats are comfortable. Apple CarPlay is awesome. Back seat is rooming. The layout of the interior is superior to other cars. Now for the issues. The touchscreen sometimes needs to be tapped 2 times to do something. About 1x per month or so, the Apps don't work. A simple restart of the car fixes the issue. My engine burned oil at the rate of 1 quart every 2K miles or so after I bought it. It took 6 months to get Subaru to replace the short block, which they eventually did after I emailed all the executives at the local dealership about how the service employees had been lying to me about ordering the new short block. Also, I had this noise when I went over bumps or turned the steering wheel. I took it in and found out I needed new front shocks and struts- they were rusted out at 18K miles and 18 months!!! Under warranty, so mostly just a pain. The repair issues caused me to lose confidence in the reliability of the car and I sold it. This is my second Subaru and my first one ran forever- still going in fact. Anyway, not sure when, if ever, I will go back to Subaru. I liked the car a lot- so much value for the money, except for the issues.

I bought this car after years of never having a vehicle with under 100k on it, and having always wanted a Subaru, so this was supposed to be a step up. But this vehicle is TERRIBLE. The android auto has NEVER worked, despite multiple useless and expensive trips to the dealer. Theres a recall every other day, the gas mileage is awful, its very slow, and one of the back door locks has never worked properly. I had the car break down on me twice in two days, and I was just told it needs a new alternator, at 38,000 miles. I cannot believe I have a $700 repair bill at 38,000 miles. I will never ever ever purchase another Subaru.

The '17 Impreza redo was really promising, after a few months it quickly became an enormous disappoint with big time buyer remorse. Five separate repairs had me considering an immediate trade in but who in their right mind takes an immediate "depreciation" cash bath. Subaru's supposed reliability and owner satisfaction reputation is truly hard to believe after nagging suspension issues, fuel lid and power door lock issues, a backup camera reinstall and an oil cap replacement. Aside from the dealer repairs (needing to brace yourself for dealer surprises, what terribly awesome waiting room anticipation, worse than ERs) to be fair the hatch is definitely versatile for those needing AWD in avoiding SUVs and the optional safety spend option is a must. The transmission is unnecessarily underpowered even with light driving, merging on highways, difficult. The weight of the car with a weak engine won't bode well for long term ownership. What else, to see a cd player, HD radio and more USB ports recently added to the Premium trim is another new kick to the groin but you can't exactly ask the manufacturer for a do over. The point is you seriously need to consider legitimate, unbiased, unbought reviews (manufacturers and dealers alike) factoring real cost, real reliability, brand along with what you truly need to make as much as an educated decision as possible. Edmunds had it right from the outset but I regretfully passed on their commentary for other favorable reviews of what I wanted to believe in. Big mistake. Oh and TrueCar for comparison pricing? Useless. You're simply at the mercy of the dealer and your tolerance for bs each and every time. Good luck and happy, safe driving.

I have owned my Impreza a little over 4 years. This is the first car I have owned with so many recalls. Seemed like one after another. Made me wonder about the quality of the car. Well I am at 49,500 miles and had to replace my starter. Total bill $621.34. I have NEVER had such a large repair like this on a car with so few of miles. A friend of mine bought the same car as mine a week later. At 38,000 miles she had issues with the transmission. Her repair cost $900. This was my first and last Subaru that I will own....

Nothing but trouble with the Impreza and dealership. Similar to other negative reviews regarding the recalls but worse. The armrest top material is wrinkled and damaged from the sun, numerous unresolved electrical problems in addition to the display recall which also has not been resolved, door window not working, key lock not functioning, acceleration issues with gas pedal delay. Should have walked out when the sales petson could not do some simple math and then wanted to accuse me of trying to cheat him over his mistake. Bought the car for my fiance so she would have a reliable vehicle especially in the winter. The dealership has given her run-around numerous times. Avoid the west side dealership in Madison WI. Will be taking this to the next level if not resolved. Definitely NEVER buying another Subaru.

I have been driving this car to work for almost two years. My drive is only 2-3 miles one way so I get to work just after the engine warms up. The mileage is therefore not very impressive 23 mpg in the city. I like the interior and exterior styles. They are elegant and straightforward. The car is comfortable and fun to drive. The power is adequate and handling is good. The steering can be a bit vague. I like the moon roof and the Harmon Kardon system because they add to the find of driving this car. Interior and cargo volume is also great. Parts of the entertainment system are buggy but the controls are intuitively laid out. The eyesight system works very well. Would I buy the car again? I would get something more exciting like the Hyundai Veloster turbo or an electric car.

Bought our first Subaru last fall. It took some time to get used to CVTransmission but worth the good gas mileage. What we can’t get used to is the “wobble of death” ride we have to endure each time we drive over grooved pavement at highway speed! Deeper grooves cause the vehicle to shift side to side making it difficult to stay in the driving lane. My wife reported it to the dealer who said when the tires wore in it would go away??? Well, at second oil change about 10,000miles I told service manager car would feel like it was out of control on grooved pavement—he said the “the wobble of death” like when you go over a steel grating with your motorcycle and I said exactly! He said they could try to realign tires. I asked I if it could be a problem with ABS or AWD traction control. He said no cause there were no warning light on. So every time we go over this particular stretch of highway I grip the steering wheel, pray and listen to my wife complain that she is getting car sick!

Mine was a 5 speed manual sport trim. Biggest waste of money. 3 months of driving clean and then the problems cascaded. Either the ECU was cutting fuel or the pump was overheating under no load after 30 minutes driving. Either case significant lugging at 2600 RPM up to 3500. It got so bad it felt unsafe on the highway. Other problems were technology connectivity glitches, and rough idling. It was brand new. Dealer and service at it we're kind and tried to find a solution or what was wrong but couldn't. Sold it for a massive hit because I couldn't sell it without warning it was junk and possibly dangerous, didn't last me a year. This was the third Subaru I've owned, not the first with issues, but the first with such significant ones. No more Subarus ever again. You lost a customer for life because of your terrible car and lack of support for your service staff.

Would I buy this car again?

I finally bought the Subaru I always thought I wanted but it has proven to be a disappointment in some fixable ways. 1. The stereo has a standard setting to be ON whenever the car starts, this makes it tough to conduct business on the go. 2. It is too low to the ground, often scraping on elevated driveways. I do love the way it drives and hugs the road. 3. not integrated with Google Maps

Other than the a/c "o" ring in 2021 the car has been very reliable. Comfortable and confident in our Toronto weather also.

How long should OE tires last?

After 2 years and 30311 miles, the tires needed replacement. This was in spite of regular tire rotation. Subaru customer service recites that tire life is recommended at 24000. General tire wear is 40,000 according to several reputable web sites. Subaru customer service told me I needed to contact the tire company to register a complaint. My feeling is I didn't buy tires, I bought a car with tires on it, and I expect the manufacturer that purchased the original equipment to stand behind the product

Worst car ownership experience in 28 years!

Some time in 2019 the microphone and SOS system had a failure that started causing a power draw that killed 3 batteries in 18 months. The dealership techs could not figure it out. I took it to a small shop and they found the issue in an hour. Then the transmission failed at 51917 miles. Subaru is still deciding on the warranty claim. I guess they only take your money in an hour or less. If you buy this car, I hope you are lucky and get a good one. Mine is trash.
