The best used car I've ever owned

I had a 2003 Cadillac CTS that was a lemon. After the dealer bought it back I needed a car. I bought this car on ebay for $1200.00. I put in new spark plugs and that was it. It's FWD handled fantastic in the blizzard last year. Very reliable.

last good year for Subaru

This was the last good year for the Subaru engine. It sports the 2.2l 135 hp engine. It is easy to service including TB replacement and was the last year for a non interference motor meaning a loss of the TB wont destroy the engine. It also is not prone to head gasket failure like the notorious 2.5 l versions. Service is easy and these cars are superb in snow. We live in NW Wyoming and rely upon this car in the winter. We purchased her new and have had her for 24 years. The only troublesome repair has been the front wheel bearings which need to be pressed out and are prone to corrosion. Fuel economy is always better than EPA 19/26. We always get 28-29. They are somewhat prone to corrosion and salty roads are best avoided.

The 1.8L with 5 speed manual transmission is by far the slowest car I have ever driven, but, the car is the funnest car I have ever driven during the winter. This car can feel like you are driving a toy car around if you have driven other manual cars this is a bit jerky driving but the gas mileage is good. Not very much for modification out there if you don't know what to look for but if you know Subarus you know what can be done to this car, very cheap to make fast but needs a engine upgrade almost for sure.

I bought as my second car and I using it as my primary car. Is fun to drive, easy handling, and excellent grip. Is save on snow to ride although mine has FWD I preferred it on winter time more that my SUV. It is reliable and so well design and constructed.

This is an example of a well rounded car at its core. Subaru is by far the most underrated car company on the planet, and this car lives up to the Subaru family name. For its price, you are getting safety, reliability, and comfort. Not the fastest car on the block, but if you bought this car, you probably weren't looking for that anyway. I would personally give this car a 9 out of 10 for being what it was supposed to be.
