New Suby Forester Sport

This is an update: We now have about 36000 miles on this vehicle, and so far it is performing as expected. The in-town mileage is a bit lower than EPA (~26-27mpg), but it does very well on longer drives (our last trip of about 350 miles returned 34mpg). There are some little issues that we have had to adjust to (for instance, the radio turns ON every time the car is started - all you can do is decrease the volume to zero so you don't hear it, and the cupholders don't seem to have a soft enough bottom so reusable bottles / cups can sometimes rattle), and the storage for small items is not overly useful. There is a small area in the front of the center console that fit a phone, but not when it is plugged in. Also, the port in the console between the seats is power only, and does not connect to the infotainment system, so you have to figure out where to put your phone and try and hide the USB cable. Overall, the car seems very solid and quiet. We did notice more wind noise when we mounted the cross-bars with a ski rack, but now that skiing season is over, we have removed the cross-bars (I suggest doing that if you have any place to store them as they can be very easily removed) and reduced that noise. So, overall, this Suby is more than meeting our expectations. Original review: This is a very limited review as we have only had this car for a week. We have taken it skiing twice, so do have a few miles on it. The ride is pretty smooth for this type of vehicle, and the wind noise is almost non-existent. The road noise does come thru on worn-out pavement, but is quieter than some other like vehicles that we test drove. We have owned a Forester before (a 2001), and expect like reliability and bad weather capability. Compared to the 2001, this is a much larger vehicle, both inside and outside. Washing it is a bit of an effort to get the top. We upgraded the Sport model with Option 24, and are glad we did. We really like all the new safety features - just have to learn them all and them become comfortable with them. The gas mileage for this first tank has been pretty good, reporting a combined mpg of just over 29.

Only get 18.6 mpg city not 26 mph. Subaru states mileage may very. SOA told me adding a 1/3 qt. of oil every 1000 miles is normal. Adding a qt. every 3000 miles for a 2019 Forester is isn't normal. If I knew this I would not have bought my Forester 2 1/2 months age.

The trunk is funky the mileage hasn't exceeded 22 mpg either local or highway, I have had the trunk mechanism repaired and replaced and currently with less than 3000 miles the trunk doesn't work at all. The dealer damaged my car while repairing it requiring body work to the right from side and fender, but I had a hard time getting the paper work to support either of these issues. The car hesitates and jerks after a stop, the car does not always start the first time I attempt to start it. It handles great in the snow and the sound system is fine. The electronics for the safety features also appear to be a bit erratic.

CVT transmission is terrible.

Subaru Forester is good in size, engine is ok for patient driver. CVT transmission is not smooth at all. It jolts and jerks each time starting from 25 ml/hour and than at 35 and 45 and 55 and so on. I scheduled appt w/ dealership to fix this issue. I will never lease any car with CVT transmission in the future especially Subaru’s.

I will never recommend this vehicle to anyone. The eyesight on this vehicle will cause accidents instead of prevent. The anti-collision goes of when the car in front of you goes into the turn lane left or right. Also will go off if your garage door isn’t fully up and you are pulling up to the garage. It doesn’t slightly come on either. It is scary when the bells and whistles and the antilock brakes are activated to maximum ability. Might even cause whiplash someday. Also backs your speed way down way too soon even on the lowest setting. In snow, rain or fog, the eyesight disables itself. The dash is constantly beeping or dinging at you for some reason. If you have to unhook your seatbelt to adjust, your cruise kicks out and the radio is turned off. Also the singer for the seatbelt is ridiculous. If you are moving your vehicle around the yard, the seatbelt dinger goes off and will not stop EVER until you click the seatbelt. If someone unhooks the seatbelt too soon when you drop them off, you either have to turn off the ignition or click their seatbelt back in. Also when using the remote start, the vehicle shuts off when opening the door. The vehicle shuts off any time it stops to “save gas”. I have 10k miles and save .26 gallons saving me a whopping $.65 in gas. The starter has a shelf life and will exceed the gas savings be 100x. Auto play and volume control are an issue with the radio also. Should be adjusted to speed a little better. Settings do not appear to work that well. I would recommend this vehicle without all these features or if they were able to be permanently disabled or adjusted to driving style. Only reason I drive it is because it is the only AWD my work offers and I am in a snow region. Make sure you test drive and check out all these features before you buy. Dealership of course will not tell you how they function.

Good design, poor electronics driving me insane!

New car. Bad phone, difficult (impossible?) to service electronics. The phone reception is appalling and I have had it checked twice by two different garages. Boot lid opens when I am away from the car. Auto and non auto headlights dont work properly and garage cannot check them during the day. Rear windscreen wiper doesnt clean its full sweep. Mirrors fold in when I start the engine. Car battery goes flat when parked. Great physical design, comfortable, lots of road/wind noise. Just awful electronics and country garages dont do electronics. Sydney garage cannot fix phone - they tried stuffing the microphone with tissue paper! The phone is the main bugbear as I work in the car and sometimes have to get out of the car to make calls on Iphone 8.

We have owned the car for five months and have about 9K miles. Although we purchased as a family car, my wife has decided that she loves the car and has been the primary driver. We only had one issue when we received the car, a defective rear window washer sprayer. We took the car into the dealer and they quickly diagnosed the problem and fixed it. Since then, no other issues. We recently took the car in for the first service which the car info system started to advise us about at around 8.5K miles. However, the Subaru Service Dept. suggested that we should service the car about every 5K miles. The service schedule is so buried in the super thick car manual that we could not find it!

So this reviews replaces my earlier reveiw which was titled "disappointed " . Its been over a year now. It runs great no issues there but at the beginning there was a lot of issues like the gate not opening, things not working then working again after car restarted. After several computer updates over many months in combination of me learning this car and really knowing how it works, I Love it! At the beginning even the dealer didn't understand completely how all these safety features and computers worked on this car. So with time i eventually figured it all out. Its kept me from many mishaps. I especially love the backup Camera and the fact it hits the brakes for you if it sees something in your path getting too close. My husband likes to park his truck and or trailer behind where i pull out of the garage. And sometimes being in a hurry i dont look and if it wasnt for the car looking and stopping for me I have no doubt I could of hurt both our vehicles. Its definitely a safer car to drive but i wouldnt recommend it to anyone thats not able or willing to really learn this car. Its not like just getting behind the wheel and going you really need to understand how all these features work , because it can be soooo aggravating at times but when you understand this car IT'S AWESOME! I just wish that when Subaru put out a brand new highly sophisticated car like this one that they would train their technicians exactly how it all works or ar least make easier reader friendly manuals so it doesnt take a year of driving to really understand how your vehicle works!!!! Communication goes a long way! Ill give the techs at my dealership an A for effort but i give the manufacturer an F for not communicating which makes their cars at the beginning not very user friendly at all!!!

This is one great automobile. I also have a 16 outback touring and I did not think Subaru would be able to top that model anytime soon but the 19 Forester is definitely better. Having said that I must say that I HATE the auto stop start feature and would pay almost anything for a way to defeat it. as it is I have to try to remember to shut it off every time I start the car. If I needed a third car ( I don't) I would definitely look for something that would allow me to defeat the auto stop start. After market products OK! Maybe a Jeep. --- After two years I have more thoughts. If I buy another one I would up- grade to the touring model. After driving other folks Forester's I think the extra features are worth the extra price. However factory installed remote start is a must. and any car without it is a no sale. The Stop start is still the only feature I truly hate. Hopefully the Eyesight feature has been fine tuned by now, because like many other Subaru owners I have learned to turn it off going into certain types of high speed multi lane intersections otherwise risking having the car slam on the brakes while in the high speed lane.

Traded a 2013 crosstrek for this thing, horrible mistake. The new forester has that engine shut off feature, "enhanced" cruise control that changes speed in 5 mph increments (DANGEROUS)and SLOWS the car when approaching cars to pass, warning bells that go off all the time(I've driven over 50 years,NO accidents) and the transmission is herky jerky below 40 mph---& a manual explaining it all that's a mere 500 pages( ! ) long.We had recalls on the valve springs & tranny on the 2013. These new high teckkie things on new cars are awful & worth avoiding at all costs and the future looks dim.Keep your old car. My older chevy truck is a real keeper after this forester experience. UPDATE-Finally talked my wife(her car) into getting rid of this forester thing. Traded for a 2021 toyota rav4 hybrid . The rav4 is MUCH easier to use with it's FAR less confusing hi tekkie stuff. The cruise control can be used like the pre-hi tekkie stuff instead of the dangerous cruise we are now forced to endure . HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN ! Bye forever subaru . Make sure the dealer shows you ALL the hi tekkie junk on this car. They don't volunteer ANY info before you buy this thing.Beware.Then get a toyota.

Horrible Electronics!

I have a 2019 Subaru Forester. This is my first Subaru, I will never buy a Subaru again! The only positive thing I can say about the automobile is that it rides nice. The electronics are horrendous. There are a number of "safety feature" electronics on the "Touring" model of the Forester. Many seem to have a mind of there own. I have had to go back to the dealership a couple of times because the tail gate would not open. I was told it was "sensitive". The car has a feature that alerts the driver when the driver's eyes are "supposedly" not looking at the road. I have been driving when this "alert" runs continuously and annoyingly! Again, went back to the dealership. I was told that the direction of the sun (in this case setting) will blind the sensor monitoring the driver's eyes. This results in the alert. Sometimes the "lane change warning" works sometimes it doesn't. There are many indicators on the dash that light up, (or not light up), or beep, or ring on any given day, with my not turning anything on or off. The electronics are incredibly inconsistent. I was told this model forester has the latest Subaru electronics. Apparently the systems were not tested enough in real world, road driving scenarios. Interestingly, the day I signed the papers for the car the finance manager said, "Now don't come back here in a month and try to return the car.", I thought he was making a joke. Now I know he knew something at the time about this car that I didn't. Or, at least it appears that way.

Big V here It has been 13 months and 5,000 miles since I picked up by new (2019) Forester from RaffertySubaru. In case I gave people the wrong impression, I am completely happy with the car and the Dealership. At 74 and someone who cut his teeth on 4 speed (manual) muscle cars, I realized this suv was not the performance machine a WRX or STI is. I just would have liked to have the turbo option available. I don’t know about the other reviewers but my Limited has top quality materials and the fit and finish is first rate. Would I buy another Forester, Yes. Especially if I could get RaffertySubaru to put a turbo on it 😜 Aug 3rd 2021. After almost three years and 8709 miles still really enjoy the car. Best feature in my opinion is the ergonomics. Definitely will buy another

The Subaru Forester is the perfect compromise between looks, performance and value. The car is a delight to drive. The Sport model has many of the features that I wanted without having to go to the more expensive trim lines. The greatest feature to me is the automatic headlights. The auto dimming works very well. IOur local dealer provides excellent customer service. I will continue to buy Subaru Foresters.

I have owned my 19 Subi since oct 2018 with 8700miles and I have loved it there are few issues mainly in design cons 1) the radio glitches out 2) driver seat control panel popping off 3) lack of larger center console 4)start stop always on 5) lane centering more like keeps you between the yellow and the white line but will do like bumper cars side to side 6) seats not ventilated 7) remote Start from your key fob is not factory from factory without additional part installed 8) you can’t leave car running and lock car even though key fob is with you as some other brands you can pros 1) auto braking crash avoidance DOES WORK greatly I have been saved by the car doing its job when some one tried to set trap of stoping with no where to go boxing me in and they had no tail lights or warning at 55 mph it saw the car and stoped me and kept me safe 😀😀😀 2) I have plenty of room in the car as I’m bigger guy with injures 3) the doors open full 90degrees and easy to get into 4) I have done several long trips at 75 at 5 over speed limits and was averaging 37mpg high way and in town avg mid 20’s 5) I feel very safe 6) nice big moon roof that opens easy one button 7) auto reverse braken works great stopped wife from hitting another car 8) I love the way the sport looks and handles and it’s not a extreamly expensive suv when compared to all the other brands 9) you can remote start and control temp from your cell phone 10) all lights on car are led except the only halogen bulbs are the turn signals you can see really well with led head lights and led fog lights Big pros Awd and still mid high 30mpg Room for 4 grown adults with leg room for trips There is more positives about my subi than negatives I love my 2019 Subi Forester sport I have the maxed out sport with power lift gate upgraded audio Harmon and stereo Even with the few faults she has I would by another Subi sport Recently I went looking at all Subi products and found that with my injury’s the sport and the new accent are only ones I would go with and Forester sport still top of the pile for me it’s easier and smaller to get into tight places with the pros of the sport to me weighing higher than the accent I loose options like my dual xmode in center consol loosing my 12v plug a lot of other smaller things So for me sport beats all the other models and I’m in process of getting another Subi for my spouse Thank you for your time and this is my opinion of Subaru Forester sport there is always room to improve no matter the brand or company and I feel Subi is leader of the pack and this is coming from a life time Chevy guy who now will go Subaru Lol just wish they made trucks also

Because the windows are so large and untinted in front, it gets really hot in sunlight. TINT your windows or you won't benefit from air-conditioning. Large windows keep things safer nonetheless. I love the large sunroof at night or when cool....great breeze and view. Spacious for large plants, etc. Awesome to have 24 hr. roadside assistance option! They come to you wherever, whenever! Not for drivers that want to accelerate quickly

We bought 2019 Forester Premium last January and have been very happy since then. It is a third car in our family after a BMW X5, Merc GLC 300. So I have a good comparison available about how it drives. X5 is very powerful, GLC is very luxurious , but the Forester is the most smooth to drive. The CVT is uber respnosive and the car accelerates from zero to 60mph very smoothly and quickly. Passing on freeways is very good. I have recently pushed it to 110mph on the freeway during the lock down due to the virus epidemic and it achieved the target with no sweat. So those claiming that it is under powered is incorrect. Only nit picking is the Apple Play is wired and not over blue tooth, so a little inconvienent. It takes regular gas which is a bonus. All round view from the cockpit is awesome. Storage capacity is as good as a large SUV. You won't regret the purchase as it drives better then any luxury brands !

My mpg is the worst!!

mariam2115, 07/25/2020

Chances are you won’t get a lemon in regard to fuel mileage on a Subaru Forester, but I did. I previously leased a 2017 premium Suburu Forester, and was very pleased with the mileage, but I am past my first year of leasing a new premium Forester 2019, and my mileage is horrible compared to what it should be according to stated EPG. I am consistently getting about 20 miles per gallon every tank fill for the past year since I leased. I wanted to keep this car at the end of the lease but now I will lose my equity, Since I don’t want to keep this one. I asked the dealership to check the mileage for me, and diagnose the system, and they said nothing wrong but I know there’s got to be something wrong. I drive no differently than before, and I consistently got about 25 average city and about 30 average on the highway on the 2019 model, and I am a fanatic about my mpg, I check it every single time I fill my gas tank to the top. I reset the A trip odometer to zero each and every time and just leave it until I fill up again. No improvement in mileage and I am at almost 9000 miles driven for the year. I hope everyone else is faring better than I, as to mileage. Otherwise I am satisfied with the new improvements and re-design of the 2019 model. Great improvement from my previous 2017. In almost every way. The exterior is definitely more streamlined than before and a little more stylish. Inside, better dashboard electronic instrument visibility, easier controls, more streamlined and stylish interior, excellent roominess inside and headroom, smooth ride, great visibility, I only wish they let you pick a different interior color, the ice silver metallic only comes with black. But the most important thing is the mpg, and furthermore the pick up is not good on this one as compared to my previous 2017. That one was much better. I may be one of the few Subaru Forester 2019 owners that has lost the love. I really wanted to stick with Subaru forever but I am so disappointed now, because of my lemon in gas mileage, that I may move on to another brand make of car. I am now afraid of getting another lemon, especially since they had problems in Japan with stated EPG. They got in some trouble with that, I believe, Japan. Suburu, there is something wrong with the mechanics of this specific car mileage wise. It does not live up to it’s usual reputation for mileage per gallon.

I leased a 2019 Fozzy Premium earlier in the year, which is great for city driving. The fuel economy is outstanding considering this is an all-time AWD SUV, and coming from my previous Subaru, an Outback, it's a lot easier to park in the city. It has so much more tech than my 2011 it replaced! CarPlay is outstanding. The Adaptive Cruise has been life-altering to my commute. People tend to be quick to criticize the acceleration. Perhaps if you're primarily a highway driver, you might want to look into the Outback XT line that just game out, but for city driving, where you're constantly stopping and going, this is perfectly adequate. The only time I really notice sluggishness is when I have a car filled with people (figure that adds around 150-200 pounds per extra person) and when I'm going up hill. The only thing that would make this car better would be to have a full EV or at the very least Plug-in Hybrid EV variety of this car so I can get better city fuel economy. I have the Option Pack 15 on my Forester which includes a lot of good tech, strongly recommended. However, keep in mind if you want the fancy LED "C-Lights" called Konoji's for the daytime running lamps, you need to get a Limited or Touring.

Power Failure

We purchased our 2019 Forester in early January 2019 with great expatations. For approximately 2 years this car served us without incident. In Fall of 2020, we began experiencing battery failure. After much testing at the dealership, we were given a new battery. This worked for about 7 months when we again experienced battery failure. Again, after much testing, we were given a new battery. This outcome is very disappointing in that we cannot rely on this car starting every time we need it. Therefore , we need to consider a replacement that is reliable.

if you want a competent safe small SUV this is the one for you. I traded in a 2017 Hyundai Sport 2.0 Ultimate and I am not looking back! Not that I didn't love that vehicle and all the luxury features that you'd expect on high end vehicle, but this Subaru in my opinion has more to offer on the features I think are important. It's quieter, rides better, the AWD is amazing, it costs less, and the EYESIGHT system is incredible. and believe it or not my car insurance dropped by $200 a year. I compared this vehicle with all the competitors and sorry Honda, Mazda, Toyota !! you lose !!!

They eyesight is annoying, applying the brakes for no reason when driving by cars parked on the street, lane assist fought me when I tried to move away from another car that drifted into my lane, and the transmission is very jerky. Nothing about this vehicle is quick, nimble, or sporty. It's an embarassment and I am already looking for a replacement after 4 months of ownership.

I have had my new 2019 Subaru for exactly 4 months and am not impressed. From the very beginning I did not like the auto start/stop feature, but had learned to deal with it. Was told it would automatically turn on whenever I started the vehicle. For the first 3 months I had no problem with the feature, driving with it on sometimes and off during other occasions. I was averaging about 27 miles per gallon. Month 4 was a different matter. The auto feature seemed to stop working, turning on and off by itself. I would not even had to push the button. Mileage dropped to 12-18 mpg. My driving conditions (mainly city) had not altered. I took the vehicle in for inspection at the dealer and was told they don't check nor quarantee fuel economy. The service tech decided to "check" my vehicle when I pushed the issue. He drove it on the freeway using cruise control and got mpg up to 40 and took a picture to show me. Once he brought it back the mileage started to drop. I left unsatisfied. Now that my mileage is back to 18 mpg I am thinking of calling the dealership again. Something has to be wrong with the auto/stop feature for such a big drop in mileage without alteration in driving. Anyone else having the same issue?

When cold it doesn't start on 1st try. When it does start it over revs. Hate, hate, hate auto shut off. Arm rests to low, sun visor does not fit around Eye Sight feature. Do not like heat/ AC controls. Miss parking brake lever. Cheap carpet, carpet wearing at gas pedal. Placement of controls and switches.

The horrible "enhanced" cruise control only changes speeds in 5 mph increments !!! The "eyesight" nonsense tells you you're coming up on a semi 200 yards ahead going in your direction as if you didn't know.It slows you down, like it not.Nonsense.It might be of some minimal use in heavy fog but fog TURNS IT OFF !!! Nonsense. Been back to the dealers twice ,the guy who can explain how to turn this stuff off wasn't there & the 500 page manual might be decipherable...to a rocket engineer, not me. I've flown airplanes & driven huge tower fire trucks for years but have never seen such complex nonsense as the high tech baloney on this car. I'm actively looking for a new traditionally driven vehicle. Subaru ? NEVER EVER AGAIN ! Subaru must hate drivers.

I have never regretted a new car purchase more than this one. Calling the engine "adequate" is only true if you don't care about performance at all; this car had the worst acceleration of any car I have ever owned. I put it into sport mode and adjusted the seat so that I could stomp the pedal to get a slight hint of acceleration. I had to plan passing on the freeway far in advance, and forget it if you're going uphill even a little. The weak engine killed any enjoyment I might otherwise have gotten out of driving. I also had constant problems with the tailgate failing to open, and when I brought it in to be fixed I was told "they just do that." Every time it failed to open, I had one of two options: disconnect the battery to reset the computer, or crawl into the trunk over the back seats, pry the cover panel off the inside of the tailgate and manually pull an interior switch which would release the latch. Nothing I tried seemed to prevent this and the dealership wouldn't even try to fix it. The interior was nice and comfortable and I liked most other things about it; if they gave it another 75 horsepower and fixed the obnoxious and defective tailgate, it would have been a nice car. As it is, avoid them like the plague unless you like travelling at a glacial pace and never plan to use the tailgate.

Horrible auto stop/start feature. I was almost rear ended by an inattentive driver at a stop. I drive forest roads to hike a lot. The car reads the tire marks in gravel roads as lane markers and beeps as if I cross lanes. The brakes engage suddenly if the eyesight reads a bird or low hanging branch as an obstacle. I don't feel confident this will be a good thing when it snows. How is the car going to know that there is black ice and slamming on the brakes could be disastrous. I have owned 2 other foresters, and I now feel uncomfortable trusting my car to be safe in hazardous conditions. I'm tired of turning off features I don't want because they came standard and when I turn the car on after stopping they reset to on. Too many features. I'm a minimalist. They placed the cupholders too close to the heated seat switches, AGAIN. Very easy to spill liquid on them. And large cups catch on the cubbyhole lid. The back hatch gate works when it wants to which is about 50% of the time, at most. Now for the positive side. The seats are very comfortable. The ride is great with good stability on cornering and dirt roads. Great cargo space for my 2 large dogs to go with me. The 17in wheels handle well. The climate controls are way better for quick heat/cooling. But I am seriously considering finding another car due to the above problems. Too bad, Forester used to be the perfect ride for my lifestyle. Turned the car in and bought a 2019 Rav4. Same features, can turn most off. But no sudden slamming stops for no reason. Handles snow, mud and dirt roads very well. Seats are comfortable and visibility is good. Will keep the Rav4.

Amazing amount of safety technology, including adaptive cruise control, rear traffic alert, auto-dimming headlights blind spot warnings, lane-keeping assist, etc., etc. A little overwhelming, but the safety features are on by default so you really don’t have to understand them. It feels much bigger, higher, and roomier than our old (2001) Forester. Apple car play and SiriusXM are great (latter with a free 4 month trial); don’t really need a separate navigation system. Can’t comment yet on reliability, but the brand has a good record. The site won’t let me enter the purchase year, but it was December 2018. Addendum January 2020: low mileage about 3400/year), but no problems. Very roomy! Addendum July 2021. Little to add - no reliability problems (though only ~9400 miles). Safety features fantastic. Adaptive cruise control will bring you to a complete stop (requires a little courage not to step on the brake yourself). ABS has worked flawlessly in a couple of emergency stops. Feels much roomier than its classification would suggest.

First and Last Subaru Purchase

We purchased our first Subaru a 2019 Subaru Forester Touring. The exterior color is Dark Gray Metallic. The main reason I'm giving the Forester 2 Stars is that the exterior paint job has 7 flaws in it. The Forester has 2 flaws on the hood and 5 on the roof. The 7 areas are missing paint and it's a lighter color. We can't believe that our Quality Standards are higher than Subaru and a Subaru Dealer. How did it leave the factory with these paint flaws? Why didn't the Dealer mention this when trying to clean and inspect the vehicle upon delivery? We picked the Forester up when it was dark outside and couldn't see the paint flaws - this was our mistake. We've purchased new Honda CR-V's and Toyota RAV4's in the past and never had a problem with the exterior paint job. The Forester's CVT is noisy when accelerating. The road noise is above average over 55 mph. The Forester's auto stop/start is rather rough and you must disengage it every time you start the Forester. We're very disappointed with our first Subaru purchase and it will definitely be our last. We're stuck with this Forester until we get past the early depreciation and then will sell or trade on another brand. The poor paint job will hurt us on the resale value. We traded in our last Subaru in May of 2020. The on/off start has to be manually turned off every time you start the Forester. It can't be turned off permanently. The Driver Focus monitoring is a joke. It goes off when still looking at the road but move your head. At least 3 times it went on and off for 20 -30 minutes while driving for no reason. A bad idea to release technology if it doesn't work. Good Bye Subaru

Read, drove, stopped owners of cars I was interested in....I never owned a Subaru before but have seen a lot 20 plus years old....doesn’t happen with many unless they are collectors. These were everyday driving vehicles. Tells me the value of Outbacks and Foresters. I toggled between this and any SUV that helped me with back and hip issues. Getting in a car failed pretty much every make. Doors don’t open wide enough. If I got in the backrest was too hard and adding to a high price for some padding was insane. $40,000 starting price to worry about back issues on all other SUVs. All. Heated seats for therapy not really a heated seat for weather kind of person. I use in the summer too 😢. Easy in. Easy out with no struggle. The ride is smooth and get a kick out of the exhaust “I have serious horse power” 😂 but the pressing gas pedal to merge is not an issue. Downside and may require getting used to....Autobraking. My thoughts it does it when not necessarily needed. I see a car and slowing down because I know they will pull out of a parking lot...because people are a Me first. Little too much. That scares me much worse then the car coming out. All the other features are amazing and love...although I didn’t know lane assist actually steers the car to an extent. I love my seats even if I am sitting in it for many hours. No issues coming in and out. Knee room. 8” Screen. Radio and Apple/Android is awesome. CarPlay love it. Now if we could get some snow......Long Island

The car is nice inside and so far is doing okay mechanically. Little things don't work like the rear lift gate wont respond to key fob until after I've opened it manually. Android Auto has been a huge disappointment. It won't stay connected rendering the Google maps useless, meanwhile the onboard navigation system is clunky. Every now and again the radio becomes non-responsive. Sometimes just the volume doesn't work, other times it is the whole radio. The large displays are nice and I love the auto vehicle hold feature which allows you to rest at a light without keeping your foot on the break. Biggest up-side is that it is very comfortable. The sight lines are great.

I think the car is a good value. This is our sixth Subaru. Comfort is fine, as is the smoothness of drivetrain. Panoramic sunroof is a nice addition. I, surprisingly, do not mind the CVT. Mileage is very good, for the size of the vehicle. Traction with the standard all-season tires, was fine during the first winter, but I would opt for a change to snows after a year. The only complaint I have involves the electronics, coupled with the owner's manual. I have spent far too much time trying to adjust the liftgate (or just getting it to open!), squinting at the photos and terribly-organized manual, and even (I still can't believe this) trying to adjust the clock. I've even sought help from Youtube, where the presence of dealers' help videos indicates that I'm not the only one to have a problem interpreting the lights on the dash, locating relevant parts of the owners' manual, and getting various lights and glitches fixed. That, my friends, is the only problem I've had with our new Forester Premium. I suggest Subaru provide a cheat sheet (laminated) with the common settings and adjustment problems highlighted, after the cheat sheet has been user tested on someone other than a very patient techie. Maybe make this cheat sheet a video, handed out with car purchase. The manual is borderline useless, penalizing the user with endless fumbling, interpreting, and a series of customer failures. UPDATE a year later: Smooth car, tracks well, stock tires are Eco (high mpg). Car gets good mileage, yet has adequate power. Roomy and comfortable. We've had tailgate opening problems. Interestingly, the Ascent has had some problems there that sound very similar, which has caused a CR downrating--unusual for Subaru. Note that we just received a recall notice for something in the tailgate assembly. "I told you so." Additionally, the dash illuminates with a puzzling light now and then. We have looked up said light in the manual, and looked on-line also, to no avail. It is impossible to figure out logically and intuitively. Our last resort is a call to the Subaru service dept., and the tech will help us out. Usually, the light is "no problem," and telling us the vehicle is functioning normally. On the tires: I've given up on using the eco tires in snow. I've ordered dedicated snow tires (Altimax Arctic). Getting them put on this weekend. Bottom line: Car is still a good value, rattle-free, etc., with a few frustrations.

Annoying, but Practical and Reliable

Overall, I like my Forester more than I dislike it. There are four important things I really like about it. I'm a big guy, but I fit in it well. It is very reliable. It gets decent gas mileage. I have a good view of the road. I feel neutral about the engine as I expected it to be underpowered. I do not like the transmission and had trouble with it in the Rockies. The X-mode doesn't work well. I hate its "Nanny Car" features. I find the safety features annoying; they bing and bong unnecessarily. The engine cut-off is unpredictable. The doors can't be unlocked while driving. I have to press and hold the radio power button for 5 seconds to get it to turn off. Why Subaru? Is it that unthinkable someone might want to turn off the radio? Granted, I am an outlier. I don't want my phone to connect to my car, but 5 seconds? I don't like the adaptive cruise control. Overall, I knew I was choosing a boring, but reliable and practical car. The problem is that it is not boring, it is annoying.

I've owned cars and trucks for 60 years and this 2019 Subaru Forester Touring is close to the best I've ever owned. Power is more than adequate; don't know what people are complaining about. Visibility is best ever. All the bells and whistles, which I still haven't mastered completely, are mostly intuitive and seem to work as intended. Gas mileage is above 30 on highway and just below 30 around town. Comfortable driving. Tons of space. Beeps at me when I'm looking at cows and about to drive off the road--better than a wife. The tail gate module is being replaced because the button on the dash doesn't always work and that's been the only fail after one year. Back in the day, you'd buy a new car and come back in with a long check list of stuff that was wrong.

I bought a 2019 Forester Touring. I wish I had my 2002 Honda Odyssey back!!!! I am looking at other vehicles now as I did not find this vehicle comfortable on a two hour drive. My hands went to sleep. It just let me down is several ways, here are some of the things I don't like: 1. The Facial Recognition does not work. It never recognizes me, wonder how well it even works. 2. The Navigation/Map was terrible. On my two hour drive it told me I was at my destination which was out in the middle of the highway. It could not even take me to the address I had entered into the system. Luckily I had my phone so I could find the actual location. Also it cannot find locations entered by name. You have to have an exact address or it says they don't exist. This system is worthless. 3. Stop/Start feature. When you stop at a light the engine cuts off. When you lift up on the break a little it starts up again. The miniscule amount of gas it says it is saving is in the hundredths of a gallon.....virtually no savings at all. How much extra wear this feature puts on the starter. Replacing it will cost way more than the gas savings. 4. The air conditioner vent blows air right on your hands while on the intended locations on the wheel. The A/C really makes your hands cold. The placement is bad. 5. You cannot reach the arm rests even with your elbow. It is too far back and low, opening to a very very small storage compartment. 6. The seats are very narrow if you are person who is not small. The edges come up quite a bit and are uncomfortable on your thighs/hips. 7. The door sill is high for getting your feet in. I have a bad knee and I have to lift my leg with my hands to get my foot in the door. 8. Cup holders are difficult to see and back really far (in the console) 9. When the engine is cold (initial start) it up it revs up really high. It seems like it could be unnecessarily hard on the engine. 10. The carpet is cheap and showing wear where your heel sits at the gas pedal. And my car is only 5 months old. 11. Cruise Control does not adjust in very small increments. Seems like it speeds up or drops down in more extreme increments rather than than a more reasonable 2 mph increments. 12. Computer Screen can be difficult to find information on some things. They tend to be buried down through several levels and not always to get to the right location. 13. The Rear Hatch does not always open when you push the button inside the car. 14. Steering is sloppy, mine is not tight controlled. The touring is an expensive vehicle. These are items I find to be negative and bothersome and quite a few things for a top of the line vehicle. I will be trading this vehicle in as soon as reasonably possible!!!

Slightly bigger this year, bigger engine yet better gas mileages. Smoother ride and much quieter than previous years. Automatic engine cut off feature at full stop at traffic lights is saving me a small fortune in gasoline consumption. I didn’t think I’d like this feature which you can turn off, but when I saw the gas savings I am now a convert, I love it! Lots of other good stuff. Well worth taking a test ride for sure!!

We still have our '03 Outback & '14 Hybrid Crosstrek- and wanted something in the middle. One year in w/ 17K miles on our Sport- but so far very satisfied, just like with all of our Subarus. Really like the Orange/Red accents & black wheels- more stylish than the doudy reputation they have for styling/design. EyeSight & Harmon/Kardon sound system are nice tech features. We're also averaging suprisingly good mileage- as good or better than the Hybrid with more size & functionality.

I am owner of 3 Subaru cars in past. I was about to trade in my RAV4 to a new 19 Subaru Forester. I did a good research online. The first 19 Foresters arrived. Stopped by my local dealer for a test drive. The car look great except Sport trim have weird orange trim that do not make sense. It makes fake rugged trim. Anything orange is actually hard plastic. This was the first shock. Instead of adding cool sport accent it adds feeling of fake. During the test drive the engine died. Even the deal got shocked. Then we realized there was Auto Start Stop system. We pulled over and tried to figure out how to disable it. There was a temporary button to disable the S/S feature, but it resets next engine start. There is no permanent disable! That stopped me from buying it. Later I checked other trims and got disappointed with the piano black or dust magnet accent. The interior look dusty right away you clean it. Then the back of the car has the second exhaust pipe outline with orange accent, but there was no exhaust pipe! The overall feel is like there were several teams designed the card, but they did not communicate each other. The whole design inside out look like aftermarket trims installed. Too many black shades, too many gray shades, piano black, chrome, silver, metal. Who ever approved the design? Apparently the 19 Forester uses the same Harman Kardon radios as Ascent and Crosstrek and there are many issues you can google like the radio forgets the AM/FM radio presets. This is a significant glitch that makes the owner unhappy. Subaru is trying to resolve the issue, but fails. The radio replacement are backordered up to to 6 months and Subaru will replace it to exact same radio with exact same issues. Navigation is lagging. Android Auto won't work with many phone. I did try several Android phone and found one that works. There were complains about Apple Car play. Do not simply assume it will work if it has it. Subaru will blame you phone and you may end up getting a compatible phone. CVT transmission now is mimicing the automatic transmission and add another fake to the car. I would buy the 19 Forester, but the Automatic Start Stop feature and I cannot disable it permanently ruined the whole picture. Will wait till next year model.

I'm baffled by the negatives. Two weeks since I turned in my 2017 leaser for a 2019, so I cannot speak for durability or winter handling. But in every other way, they kept all the good stuff and added more. If only they hadn't screwed up the center console, I would have given five stars. Turning off the auto-stop is a trivial habit to develop. The powered tailgate memory is a simple matter of following the instructions. (until it breaks, I suppose). The user interface, including safety, is outstanding and the steering is rock-solider than the 2017. I drove a CX-5, a RAV4 and a Cherokee in attempts to second guess myself and totally failed. Besides, this is the ONLY one that will fit a 52" wingspan RC airplane without taking the wings off - which saves me a half-hour on every flying session. Give her a break!

2019 Forrester . Driving with that awkward shaped hood is distracting . The steering is so loose and has no road feel . Stopped engine is very annoying . Radio control knobs small and hard to use . I have a 2011 outback but would not recommend the new Forrester .

Two big issues with this car. 1. Awful transmission. It sounds like it’s skipping. When it was new it was very annoying. I was told it would’get used to my driving’ in about 6 to 8 thousand miles (really?). Now at 12,500 it is minimal, but at very low speeds it feels like it’s clunking. 2: Problem number two, this car has lousy acceleration, way too unresponsive. Invest in a different car. Subaru needs to fix these problems. I’m selling my Forester Touring.

I chose to get fewer options in order to bring my base price way down. Got a 2019 Forester with 15,000 miles for $19,400 using Edmunds as a guide. Thank you for offering the tools I used.
